In Brazil and various regions globally, the initiation of landslides is frequently associated with rainfall;yet the spatial arrangement of geological structures and stratification considerably influences landslide occurrences. The multifaceted nature of these influences makes the surveillance of mass movements a highly intricate task, requiring an understanding of numerous interdependent variables. Recent years have seen an emergence in scholarly research aimed at integrating geophysical and geotechnical methodologies. The conjoint examination of geophysical and geotechnical data offers an enhanced perspective into subsurface structures. Within this work, a methodology is proposed for the synchronous analysis of electrical resistivity geophysical data and geotechnical data, specifically those extracted from the Light Dynamic Penetrometer (DPL) and Standard Penetration Test (SPT). This study involved a linear fitting process to correlate resistivity with N10/SPT N-values from DPL/SPT soundings, culminating in a 2D profile of N10/SPT N-values predicated on electrical profiles. The findings of this research furnish invaluable insights into slope stability by allowing for a two-dimensional representation of penetration resistance properties. Through the synthesis of geophysical and geotechnical data, this project aims to augment the comprehension of subsurface conditions, with potential implications for refining landslide risk evaluations. This endeavor offers insight into the formulation of more effective and precise slope management protocols and disaster prevention strategies.

The effect of non-pharmaceutical interventions on COVID-19 outcomes:A heterogeneous age-related generalisation of the SEIR model

Successive generalisations of the basic SEIR model have been proposed to accommodate the different needs of the organisations handling the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic and the assessment of the public health measures adopted and named under the common um-brella of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions(NPIs).So far,these generalisations have not been able to assess the ability of these measures to avoid infection by the SARS-CoV-2 and thus their contribution to contain the spread of the *** work proposes a new generalisation of SEIR model and includes a heterogeneous and age-related generation of infections that depends both on a probability that a contact generates the transmission of the disease and a contact *** results show(1)thanks to the universal wearing of facial coverings,the probability that a contact provokes the transmission of the disease was reduced by at least 50%and(2)the impact of the other NPI is so significant that otherwise Portugal would have gone into a non-sustainable situation of having 80%of its population infected in the first 300 days of the *** situation would have led to a number of deaths almost twenty times higher than the number that was actually recorded by December 26th,***,the results suggest that even if the requirement of universal wearing of facial coverings was adopted sooner jointly with closing workplaces and resorting to teleworking would have postponed the peak of the incidence,altought the epidemic path would have result in a number of infections hardly managed by the National Health ***,results confirm that(3)the health authorities adopted a conservative approach on the criteria to consider an infected individual not infective any longer;and(4)the most effective NPIs and stringency levels either impacting on self-protection against infection or reducing the contacts that would eventually result in infection are,in decreasing order of importance,the use of Facial coverings,Workplace clos

Brazil annually faces significant challenges with mass movements, particularly in areas with poorly constructed housing, inadequate engineering, and lacking sanitation infrastructure. Campos do Jordão, in São Paulo state, is a city currently grappling with these issues. This paper details a study conducted within a pilot area in Campos do Jordão, where geophysical surveys and geotechnical borehole data were integrated. The geophysical surveys provided 2D profiles, and samples were collected to analyse soil moisture and plasticity. These datasets were combined using a Cokriging-based model to produce an accurate representation of the subsurface conditions. The enhanced modelling of subsurface variability facilitates a deeper understanding of soil behavior, which can be used to improve landslide risk assessments. This approach is innovative, particularly within the international context where similar studies often do not address the complexities associated with urban planning deficits such as those observed in some areas of Brazil. These conditions, including the lack of proper sanitation and irregular housing, significantly influence the geological stability of the region, adding layers of complexity to subsurface assessments. Adapting geotechnical evaluation methods to local challenges offers the potential to increase the efficacy and relevance of geological risk management in regions with similar socio-economic and urban characteristics.

Bayesian estimation in Dam Monitoring Networks

A Bayesian estimator with informative prior distributions （a multi-normal and an inverted gamma distribution）, adequate to displacement estimation at dam displacement monitoring networks, is presented. The hyper-parameters of the prior distributions are obtained by Bayesian empirical methods with non-informative meta-priors. The performances of the Bayes estimator and the classical generalized lest squares estimator are compared using two measurements of the horizontal monitoring network of a concrete gravity dam： the Penha Garcia dam （Portugal）. In order to test the robustness of the two estimators, a gross error is added to one of the measured horizontal directions： the Bayes estimator proves to be significantly more robust than the classic maximum likelihood estimator.

The perceptions of fishers towards the Arrábida marine Park,a marine protected area(MPA)in the west coast of Portugal,were studied through face-to-face interviews in two different moments of the MPA life ***'perceptions about the MPA and the impact it had on the fishing activity over time were identified just before the full implementation of the zoning and regulations of the management plan and 10 years *** study aimed to investigate fishers'knowledge,acceptance and perceptions about the MPA changed with time,if support for the MPA was linked to the impact of the MPA on the fishing activity,and if fishers'perceptions about the impact of the MPA on the fishing activity match with local landings *** show that although knowledge about the marine park significantly improved over time,fishers'acceptance did not.A decrease on fishers'support was not substantial but *** such as the disagreement with regulations reinforced concerns raised during the implementation of the marine park,particularly in relation to the top-down decision-making,which commonly confers minor participation,recognition and legitimacy to ***,fisheries benefits were still not perceived by local fishers,though they are central for fishers'***,the perceived negative impacts of the park seemed to be more related to social aspects and individual interests than to impacts on *** adequate management,enforcement and participation of local fishers is still possible and are advocated here as to contribute to the expected socioecological outcomes and respective support,leading to the future successful performance of the Arrábida marine *** fishers’perceptions towards an MPA over time is central and should be included on periodical socioecological monitoring and inform an effective adaptive management.

Activin plays an important role in numerous physiological processes such as cell differentiation and remodeling, regeneration and repair of tissues from various organs, angiogenesis, morphogenesis of glandular organs, pluripotency and differentiation of stem cells, cell adhesion and apoptosis. It participates in reproductive processes like embryogenesis, in the expression of Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinizing Hormone and maturation of ovarian follicles and therefore has application in the area of reproduction of vertebrates. Given the economic importance of activin, we develop an efficient and economical method for the production of recombinant human activin A (rACT), using as expression system the yeast Pichia pastoris. rACT showed biological activity as it induced, on submicromolar dose, the increase of ovarian mass and the ovulation process in a mammal model.

The prevalence of pediatric obesity continues to increase worldwide,bringing with it various metabolic,functional,social,and psychological complications.1 Both the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity must be based on multidisciplinary approaches combining nutrition,physical activity(PA),and psychological support.2 As an essential element of these multicomponent strategies,regular physical activity has been acknowledged as having beneficial effects on children's and adolescents,body composition,physical fitness,and metabolic profile,as well as on their health-related quality of life,social and psychological health,and academic achievement.3,4 Given that only a relatively small proportion of children and adolescents meet the public health recommendations for PA,5 and given that weight loss exercise-based interventions suffer from a high attrition rate,there is a clear need for appropriate PAs.

From localized to propagating surface plasmon resonances in Au nanoparticle-coated optical fiber sensors and its implications in biosensing

Nanoparticle-based plasmonic optical fiber sensors can exhibit high sensing performance,in terms of refractive index sensitivities(RISs).However,a comprehensive understanding of the factors governing the RIS in this type of sensor remains limited,with existing reports often overlooking the presence of surface plasmon resonance(SPR)phenomena in nanoparticle(NP)assemblies and attributing high RIS to plasmonic coupling or waveguiding ***,using plasmonic optical fiber sensors based on spherical Au nanoparticles,we investigate the basis of their enhanced RIS,both experimentally and *** bulk behavior of assembled Au NPs on the optical fiber was investigated using an effective medium approximation(Ema),specifically the gradient effective medium approximation(GEma).Our findings demonstrate that the Au-coated optical fibers can support the localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR)as well as SPR in particular ***,we found that the nanoparticle sizes and surface coverage dictate which effect takes precedence in determining the RIS of the *** data,in line with numerical simulations,revealed that increasing the Au NP diameter from 20 to 90 nm(15%surface coverage)led to an RIS increase from 135 to 6998 nm/RIU due to a transition from LSPR to SPR ***,increasing the surface coverage of the fiber from 9%to 15%with 90 nm Au nanoparticles resulted in anincrease in RIS from 1297(LSPR)to 6998 nm/RIU(SPR).Hence,we ascribe the exceptional performance of these plasmonic optical fibers primary to SPR effects,as evidenced by the nonlinear RIS *** outstanding RIS of these plasmonic optical fibers was further demonstrated in the detection of thrombin protein,achieving very low limits of *** findings support broader applications of high-performance NP-based plasmonic optical fiber sensors in areas such as biomedical diagnostics,environmental monitoring,and chemical analysis.
