Stem cell therapy in the management of shoulder rotator cuff disorders

Rotator cuff tears are frequent shoulder problems that are usually dealt with surgical repair. Despite improved surgical techniques, the tendon-to-bone healing rate is unsatisfactory due to difficulties in restoring the delicate transitional tissue between bone and tendon. It is essential to understand the molecular mechanisms that determine this failure. The study of the molecular environment during embryogenesis and during normal healing after injury is key in devising strategies to get a successful repair. Mesenchymal stem cells(MSC) can differentiate into different mesodermal tissues and have a strong paracrine, anti-inflammatory, immunoregulatory and angiogenic potential. Stem cell therapy is thus a potentially effective therapy to enhance rotator cuff healing. Promising results have been reported with the use of autologous MSC of different origins in animal studies: they have shown to have better healing properties, increasing the amount of fibrocartilage formation and improving the orientation of fibrocartilage fibers with less immunologic response and reduced lymphocyte infiltration. All these changes lead to an increase in biomechanical strength. However, animal research is still inconclusive and more experimental studies are needed before human application. Future directions include expanded stem cell therapy in combination with growth factors or different scaffolds as well as new stem cell types and gene therapy.

Identification of ISSR markers linked to flowering traits in a representative sample of Eucalyptus cladocalyx

Early flowering and flower abundance have long been considered desirable traits in eucalypt breeding programs. In particular, flowers of Eucalyptus cladocalyx provide a nectar source for the production of honey in arid ecosystems. To identify inter-simple sequence repeat （ISSR） markers that are associated with early flowering and flower abundance in the southern Atacama Desert, we used a sample of 47 trees, representing five Australian prove- nances of E. cladocalyx. A unified mixed linear model （which considered the effect of genetic structure and the kinship relationship among trees） revealed that three loci were significantly associated with early flowering, which accounted for 10-16 % of the phenotypic variation, while two loci accounted for 11-13 % in flowering intensity. Locus ISO1-500 bp was associated with both flowering traits. This result is consistent with our previous findings indicating that marker-assisted selection on early flowering should have significant and positive impact on flowering intensity. The application of marker-assisted selection to identify trees that flower early and intensively may increase honey production, a resource that generates additional income for the local farmers of the southern Atacama Desert.

Fe-doped olivine and char for in-bed elimination of gasification tars in an air-blown fluidised bed reactor coupled with oxidative hot gas filtration

Gasification experiments were carried out in a pilot scale fluid bed reactor operated under allothermal mode and low fluidisation regime with iron-doped olivine and char as catalyst for in-situ tar *** catalyst combination resulted in a reduction of 50%in the overall tar yield with respect to the reference ***,the integration of an oxidative Hot Gas Filtration unit downstream the gasification reactor led to a further reduction in overall tar yield and relatively clean gas was obtained(approx.1 g/nm3,benzene-free).The tar dew point of the resulting producer gas was estimated to 80℃,only 40℃ above the threshold value recommended for its valorisation in standard internal combustion ***,catalyst elutriation and char hold-up took place to a large extent inside the *** analysis of catalyst samples at different Time-On-Stream(TOS)revealed:(i)a considerable loss of iron oxides during the first hour of test because of the interparticle mechanical attrition(mostly surface abrasion)and partial reduction of hematite to magnetite and wustite but,stable composition at higher TOS,(ii)the loss of the iron oxide coverage of Fe/olivine particles and the formation of agglomerates with increasing TOS and,(iii)the amount of carbon deposited in the surface of the Fe/olivine particles increased with TOS,but in any case,these carbon deposits can be completely oxidized above 650℃.

Population structure and range expansion:the case of the invasive gastropod Cyclope neritea in northwest iberian Peninsula

Biotic invasions have a reputation for unpredictable ***,we report how slight changes in human activity responsible for the introduction and range expansion of a non-native mollusk have led to detectable differences in the genetics of the *** neritea is a non-predatory gastropod introduced to 2 areas of the European Atlantic:the northwest iberian Peninsula(nWIP)and the French Atlantic coast(FAC).Shellfish seabed farming is intense in both areas but focuses on different commercial *** mitochondrial gene sequences,the lower genetic diversity recorded along the nWIP suggests a more homogeneous range of source populations than in the *** FAC,genetic diversity and haplotype composition in the nWIP correlate with the date of first occurrence of *** at each site rather than with geographical *** this pattern evokes the genetic signature expected under a serial-founder colonization model from a single initial enclave,a comparison with samples from potential source populations suggests that the nWIP probably experienced several independent *** jump dispersal pattern of *** in the nWIP,together with the observation that populations established in the same year are genetically undifferentiated,point to human transport as the most plausible explanation for the current range *** evidence for human-mediated dispersal,*** managed to develop a seemingly non-random genetic pattern in the *** is suggested that caution must be exerted when interpreting genetic patterns in invaders.

Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry(CDOTDR)is a well-established technique that provides spatiotemporal measurements of an environmental variable in real *** unique capability is being leveraged in an everincreasing number of applications,from energy transportation or civil security to *** date,a wide number of different approaches have been implemented,providing a plethora of options in terms of performance(resolution,acquisition bandwidth,sensitivity or range).However,to achieve high spatial resolutions,detection bandwidths in the GHz range are typically required,substantially increasing the system cost and ***,we present a novel OOTDR approach that allows a customized time expansion of the received optical ***,the presented technique reaches cm-scale spatial resolutions over t km while requiring a remarkably low detection bandwidth in the MHz *** approach relies on the use of dual-comb spectrometry to interrogate the fibre and sample the backscattered *** phase-spectral coding is applied to the employed combs to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio of the sensing scheme.A comparison of the proposed method with alternative approaches aimed at similar operation features is provided,along with a thorough analysis of the new *** results demonstrate a radically novel high-resolution OOTDR scheme,which could promote new applications in metrology,borehole monitoring or aerospace.

The visions of Industry 4.0 and 5.0 have reinforced the industrial *** have also made artificial intelligence incorporated as a major *** machine faults has become a solid foundation for automatically recognizing machine failure,and thus timely maintenance can ensure safe *** learning is a promising solution that can enhance the machine fault diagnosis model by borrowing pre-trained knowledge from the source model and applying it to the target model,which typically involves two *** response to the availability of multiple datasets,this paper proposes using selective and adaptive incremental transfer learning(SA-ITL),which fuses three algorithms,namely,the hybrid selective algorithm,the transferability enhancement algorithm,and the incremental transfer learning *** is a selective algorithm that enables selecting and ordering appropriate datasets for transfer learning and selecting useful knowledge to avoid negative *** algorithm also adaptively adjusts the portion of training data to balance the learning rate and training *** proposed algorithm is evaluated and analyzed using ten benchmark *** with other algorithms from existing works,SA-ITL improves the accuracy of all *** studies present the accuracy enhancements of the SA-ITL,including the hybrid selective algorithm(1.22%-3.82%),transferability enhancement algorithm(1.91%-4.15%),and incremental transfer learning algorithm(0.605%-2.68%).These also show the benefits of enhancing the target model with heterogeneous image datasets that widen the range of domain selection between source and target domains.

Feeding behavior, life history, and virus transmission ability of Bemisia tabaci Mediterranean species (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) under elevated CO2

The continuous rise of CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere is reducing plant nutritional quality for herbivores and indirectly affects their *** whitefly(Bemisia tabaci,Gennadius)is a major worldwide pest of agricultural crops causing significant yield *** study investigated the plant‐mediated indirect effects of elevated CO2 on the feeding behavior and life history of *** Mediterranean *** were grown under elevated and ambient CO2 concentrations for 3 weeks after which plants were either used to monitor the feeding behavior of whiteflies using the Electrical Penetration Graph technique or to examine fecundity and fertility of *** leaf carbon,nitrogen,phenols and protein contents were also analyzed for each *** tabaci feeding on plants exposed to elevated CO2 showed a longer phloem ingestion and greater fertility compared to those exposed to ambient CO2 suggesting that *** is capable of compensating for the plant nutritional ***,this study looked at the transmission of the virus Tomato yellow leaf curl virus(Begomovirus)by *** exposing source and receptor tomato plants to ambient or elevated CO2 levels before or after virus transmission *** indicate that *** transmitted the virus at the same rate independent of the CO2 levels and plant ***,we conclude that *** Mediterranean species prevails over the difficulties that changes in CO2 concentrations may cause and it is predicted that under future climate change conditions,*** would continue to be considered a serious threat for agriculture worldwide.

Arecaceae fruits are regarded as raw sources of valuable *** this work,several Arecaceae fruits belonging to eleven taxa were screened for fatty acids(FA)by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector and checked for their in vitro antitumor activity against the HT-29 colorectal cancer cells line through the MTT *** parallel use of two chromatography systems,HPLC-DAD and LC-MS,allowed the precise characterization of all phenolic compounds contained in the *** belmoreana had the highest FA amounts(11.7 g/100 g on dry weight);Syagrus romanzoffiana had a relatively high PUFA content(26.3%of total FA);and Butia capitata contains high amounts of medium-chain saturated FA(51.2%).Total phenolics reached 201.8 mg/100 g on dry weight in Phoenix dactylifera *** phenolics,occurred benzoic acids,phenylpropanoic acid,and cinnamic acid *** highlights the great diversity of flavonoids detected as(−)-catechin,quercetin,and kaempferol,as well as phenolic glycosides,such as *** methanol:water(60:40,v/v)extracts of fruits induced dose-and time-dependent inhibitory effects on HT-29 cancer ***,the fruits of Arecaceae taxa evaluated here constitute suitable candidates to be used as functional foods.
