Nitridergic Modulation of the Antinociceptive Activity of Rosuvastatin in Mice

Statins, 3-hydroxy-3 methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase enzyme inhibitors, are lipid-lowering drugs, often used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases (hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis). It has been shown that statins have antiinflammatory effects independent of their lipid-lowering effects and these anti-inflammatory effects inhibit the inflammation and pain process. This study evaluated the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of rosuvastatin using the acetic acid writhing, the formalin hind paw, the orofacial formalin and the hot plate tests. The following experimental group were used: control, acute (1 day) and chronic (3 days) after oral gavage with rosuvastatin (3, 10, 30, 100 and 300 mg/kg). Rosuvastatin produced a dose-dependent antinociception, with different potency, in all the tests. Additionally, nitric oxide synthase inhibitors (Abbreviationsand aminoguanidine) were used to assess the nitric oxide participation on this induced rosuvastatin antinociception. The data demonstrated the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity of rosuvastatin in algesiometer models of tonic or phasic pain. These activities seem to be induced by modulation of iNOS expression, a result that may be relevant in the pharmacological treatment of human pain where rosuvastatin and nitric oxide synthase inhibitors must be used.

Argentinean Commercial malbec Wines： Regional Sensory Profiles

Sensory evaluation was performed on 32 commercial malbec wines （2008 and 2009 vintages） produced in five provinces of Argentina. Wines from different areas in Mendoza （the most important producer of malbec） were also included to test possible differences within this province. Ten key attributes were first recognized by descriptive analyses and then carefully evaluated by a trained sensory panel composed of 10 judges. Among the aroma and flavour attributes the analyses focused on plum, red fruits, white pepper, bell pepper, and floral. Three attributes of taste （acidity, astringency, and bitterness） and two attributes of color （red and blue-purple hues） were also analyzed. Statistical differences and similarities in sensory data were tested using analysis of variance （ANOVA）, multiple means comparisons by least significant difference test （Fisher LSD）, and principal component analysis （PCA）. ANOVA and Fisher LSD tests of sensory data showed significant differences （P 〈 0.05） for 6 out of 10 wine attributes： plum, floral, red fruits, astringency, red and blue- purple hues.

Angina bullosa hemorrhagica an enigmatic oral disease

Angina bullosa hemorrhagica(ABH) is an enigmatic oral disorder described for the first time by Badham in 1967 to define blisters with a hematic content in the oralcavity and oropharynx unrelated to any hematological, dermatological or systemic disease. The ABH is an uncommon disease of the oral cavity distinctively affecting adults, with the highest incidence over the 5th decade of life. This process is considered nowadays to have a multifactorial etiopathogenesis, where mild oral traumatisms can trigger the blisters in susceptible individuals. Certain association on the onset of the lesion with the chronic use of inhaled steroids and, more controversially, with triggering systemic disorders, such as, diabetes or hypertension has been described. Characteristically, the ABH blisters are acute and are located on the lining mucosa, more frequently on the soft palate. Usually, the lesions are solitary and rupture easily, resulting in a superficial ulceration that heals quickly without scarring. The histopathological analysis shows a subepithelial blister containing blood and direct immunofluorescence on the epithelium is negative. The differential diagnosis should consider all oral vesiculobullous disorders with hematic content, including mucocutaneos, hematological or cystic pathology. The diagnosis of ABH is clearly clinical, although the biopsy might be helpful on atypical or abnormally recurrent cases. The general prognosis of ABH is good and the treatment is symptomatic.

Prior to the availability of whole-genome sequences,our understanding of the structural and functional aspects of Prunus tree genomes was limited mostly to molecular genetic mapping of important traits and development of EST *** public release of the peach genome and others that followed,significant advances in our knowledge of Prunus genomes and the genetic underpinnings of important traits *** this review,we highlight key achievements in Prunus genetics and breeding driven by the availability of these whole-genome *** the structural and evolutionary contexts,we summarize:(1)the current status of Prunus whole-genome sequences;(2)preliminary and ongoing work on the sequence structure and diversity of the genomes;(3)the analyses of Prunus genome evolution driven by natural and man-made selection;and(4)provide insight into haploblocking genomes as a means to define genome-scale patterns of evolution that can be leveraged for trait selection in pedigree-based Prunus tree breeding programs ***,we summarize recent and ongoing work that leverages whole-genome sequences to identify and characterize genes controlling 22 agronomically important Prunus *** include phenology,fruit quality,allergens,disease resistance,tree architecture,and ***,we explore the application of sequence-based marker-assisted breeding technologies and other sequence-guided biotechnological approaches for Prunus crop ***,we present the current status of publically available Prunus genomics and genetics data housed mainly in the Genome Database for Rosaceae(GDR)and its updated functionalities for future bioinformatics-based Prunus genetics and genomics inquiry.

Oxygen Therapy in Critical Care: A Double Edged Sword

The oxygen therapy is a universal treatment in the hospital setting, especially in the critical care units. The purpose of this therapy is to avoid hypoxemia and to ensure an adequate supply of oxygen to the tissues. But often we overlook the potential adverse effects of oxygen therapy. Oxygen produces lung damage and induces apoptosis and cell death creating an imbalance between the production of reactive species of oxygen and the antioxidant mechanisms. The oxygen therapy inhibits systemic adaptive changes induced by hypoxia, disrupting compensatory mechanisms and causing deleterious effects. We are faced with a challenge in order to treat patients with respiratory failure, counterbalancing hypoxia with hyperoxia-induced damage and introducing therapy lines that are innovative but not risk-free as permissive hypoxemia. Currently many questions remain unresolved and there are not enough clinical studies that validate the therapeutic optimal oxygenation ranges. These ranges may differ depending on each patient and the underlying disease.

Overlap of reflux and eosinophilic esophagitis in two patients requiring different therapies:A review of the literature

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) have overlapping clinical, manometric, endoscopic and histopathologic features. The diagnosis of EE is nowadays based upon the presence of 15 or more eosinophils per high power field (eo/HPF) in esophageal biopsies. We report the cases of two young males suffering from dysphagia and recurrent food impaction with reflux esophagitis and more than 20 eo/HPF in upper-mid esophagus biopsies, both of which became asymptomatic on proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy. The first patient also achieved a histologic response, while EE remained in the other patient after effective PPI treatment, as shown by 24-h esophageal pH monitoring. Topical steroid therapy combined with PPI led to complete remission in this latter patient. GERD and EE may be undistinguishable, even by histology, so diagnosis of EE should only be established after a careful correlation of clinical, endoscopic and pathologic data obtained under vigorous acid suppression. These diagnostic difficulties are maximal when both diseases overlap. Limited data are available about this topic, and the interaction between EE and GERD is a matter of debate. In this setting, upper-mid esophagus step biopsies and esophageal pH monitoring of patients on PPI therapy are pivotal to evaluate the role of each disease. A PPI trial is mandatory in patients with a histopathologic diagnosis of EE; in those unresponsive to PPI treatment, EE should be suggested. However, a clinical response to PPI may not rule out quiescent EE, as shown in this report.

Electroencephalographic coherences during emotion identification task

Coherence, a measure of spectral similarity, may estimate cortical coupling between two EEG signals as a function of frequency. The coherence between EEG signals from different brain areas depends on the structural connection and functional coupling between two regions. The theory of hemispheric specialization proposes left hemisphere activation to positive emotions and right one to negative emotions. Other proposal is that right hemisphere activation occurs with emotional stimuli. In the present study EEG coherences were calculated during the presentation of the International Affective Pictures to 36 healthy male university students. The subjects’ task was to determine the valence of the stimuli. Base line recording were done with subjects observing the blank monitor. Our results showed higher coherences during the emotional condition. No differences between negative and positive emotions were obtained. Neutral pictures evoked the highest coherence values. These data suggest that coherences between functionally coupled brain areas do not reflect emotional recognition of the valence of stimuli, but they are internal indicators of different mental processes such as memory, mental effort and arousal. Our findings do not support the theory of hemispheric specialization, neither the theory of right hemisphere;rather they suggest a complex activation pattern that involves mostly frontal areas in connection with the entire cortex.
