Side effects of cisplatin,especially dose-dependent nephrotoxicity,are major factors limiting its use in ***((S)-2,9-dihydroxy-1,10-dimethoxy-aporphine)is a natural alkaloid known for its strong antioxidant activity present in leaves/bark of boldo tree(Peumus boldus Molina),a native tree in ***,we aimed to investigate the nephroprotective effect of boldine and its underlying mechanisms on cisplatin-induced rat renal *** Wistar albino rats divided into 5 groups(Control,Cis,Bold.40,Cis+Bold.20,Cis+Bold.40 groups)were *** received boldine(20 or 40 mg/kg/day),or vehicle(saline)intraperitoneal for 14 days and a single dose cisplatin(7 mg/kg,ip)was applied on the 10th day to induce *** and kidney tissue were weighed to determine kidney *** urea nitrojen(BUN)and creatinine levels,the amount of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS,an index of lipid peroxidation),superoxide dismutase(SOD),glutathione peroxidase(GPx)enzyme activities and tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-α)levels were measured and histopathologic examination was *** nitric oxide synthase(iNOS)and caspase-3 expressions were detected *** induced by cisplatin was apparent by elevated levels of BUN,creatinine,kidney index,TBARS and TNF-α,and decreased body weight,SOD and GPx enzyme *** with boldine protected the renal function at both boldine doses by fixing the renal damage markers,oxidative stress,caspase-3 and iNOS *** findings supported biochemical *** together these findings indicate that boldine has promising protective effect against cisplatin nephrotoxicity by improving oxidative stress,inflammation,histopathological alterations and by alleviating caspase 3 expression.

BACKGROUND： Spleen deficiency in traditional Chinese medicine refers to the functional disorder of spleen, pancreas, intestines, and nervous system in modern medicine. OBJECTIVE; To test whether electro-acupuncture could alter basic fibroblast growth factor （bFGF） protein and mRNA expression in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of spleen deficiency rats. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： The randomized, controlled, in vivo animal experiment was performed at the National LeveI-B Laboratory of Clinical Cell Molecule and Biology in Shenzhen Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, between March and November in 2008. MATERIALS： Reserpine injection was produced by Guangdong Bangmin Pharmaceutical Co. Rhubarb extract granule preparation was produced by Guangdong Yifang Pharmaceutical. Huanqiu Brand sterile acupuncture pin was provided by Suzhou Acupuncture Supplies, China. Huatuo Brand electroacupuncture instrument （type SDZ-II） was purchased from Suzhou Medical Appliance Factory, China. METHODS： A total of 96 male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to control （n = 32） and induction （n = 64） groups. Spleen deficiency was induced via intraperitoneal injection of reserpine and intragastric administration of rhubarb. The successful models were randomized into two groups： model and electro-acupuncture, with 32 rats in each group. Electro-acupuncture was administered at Zusanfi （ST 36） and Sanyinjiao （SP 6） acupoints using a condensation wave and rarefaction （condensation wave 15 Hz） at a strength of 6-15 V for 20 minutes, once per day. The appearance of a slight shiver in the corresponding locus was taken as the standard. According to electro- acupuncture time points, each group was assigned to four subgroups at 7, 14, 28, and 49 days, respectively, with eight rats in each subgroup. The hydro-abrasive erosion wear behavior of duplex-treated surfaces of AISI H13 tool steel

The influence of duplex surface treatments consisting of a DC-pulsed plasma nitriding process and subsequent coatings of CrN and TiAlN deposited by physical vapor deposition(PVD)on AISI H13 tool steel was studied in this *** treated samples were characterized using metallographic techniques,SEM,EDS,and microhardness ***-abrasive erosion wear tests were performed in a specifically designed wear tester in which the samples were rotated in a wear tank containing a mixture of distilled water and ceramic abrasive chips with a fixed rotational *** wear rates caused by the abrasive particle impacts were assessed based on accumulated weight loss *** worn surfaces were also characterized using optical microscopy,SEM,and *** measurements indicated a significant increase in the surface hardness of the duplex-treated *** surfaces of the samples with the TiAlN coating were approximately 15 times harder than that of the untreated samples and 3 times that of the plasma nitrided ***-abrasive erosion wear results showed that the duplex surface treatments,especially the CrN coating,displayed the highest erosion wear resistance.

Tailoring polymer acceptors by electron linkers for achieving efficient and stable all-polymer solar cells

The trade-off between efficiency and stability is a bit vague,and it can be tricky to precisely control the bulk morphology to simultaneously improve device efficiency and ***,three fused-ring conducted polymer acceptors containing fur an,thiophene and selenophene as the electron linkers in their conjugated backbones,namely PY-O,PY-S and PY-S e,were designed and *** electron linker engineering affects the intermolecular interactions of relative polymer acceptors and their charge transport ***,excellent material compatibility was achieved when PY-Se was blended with polymer donor PBDB-T,resulting in nanoscale domains with favorable phase *** optimized PBDB-T:PY-Se blend not only exhibits maximum performance with a power conversion efficiency of 15.48%,which is much higher than those of PBDB-T:PY-O(9.80%) and PBDB-T:PY-S(14.16%) devices,but also shows better storage and operational stabilities,and mechanical *** work demonstrates that precise modification of electron linkers can be a practical way to simultaneously actualize molecular crystallinity and phase mis cibility for improving the performance of all-polymer solar cells,showing practical significance.

Response of fungal communities to afforestation and its indication for forest restoration

Soil fungi in forest ecosystems have great potential to enhance host plant growth and systemic ecological functions and *** at Saihanba Mechanized Forest Farm,the world's largest artificial plantation,has been integral to global forest ecosystem preservation since the *** better assess the ecological effects of soil microbiology after afforestation,fungal diversity and community structure(using Illumina sequencing)from forests dominated by Larix gmelinii ***-rupprechtii,Pinus sylvestris *** and Picea asperata,and from grassland were *** total,4,540 operational taxonomic units(OTUs)were identified,with Mortierella and Solicoccozyma being the dominant genera of grassland soil and Inocybe,Cortinarius,Piloderma,Tomentella,Sebacina,Hygrophorus and Saitozyma dominating the plantation *** coordinate analysis(PCoA)and co-occurrence networks revealed differences in fungal structure after ***,more symbiotroph guilds were dominated by ectomycorrhizal fungi in plantations under the prediction of *** community composition and diversity of soil fungi were significantly influenced by pH via redundancy analysis(RDA)and the Mantel test(p<0.01).This finding emphasizes that soil pH has a strong effect on the transition of fungal communities and functional taxa from grassland to plantation,providing a novel indicator for forest restoration.

New Reverse Conversion for Four-Moduli Set and Five-Moduli Set

Most reverse conversions in Residue Number Systems (RNS) are based on the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT) and the Mixed Radix Conversion (MRC). The complexity of the circuitry of the CRT is high due to the large modulo-M operation. The MRC has a simple circuitry but it’s a sequential process in nature. The purpose of this research is to obtain an efficient reverse conversion method to reduce the computational overhead found in the conventional reverse conversion algorithms. In this paper, new algorithms for reverse conversion in RNS for four-moduli set and five-moduli set have been proposed and their correctness evaluated. Numerical evaluations to ascertain the correctness and simplicity of the algorithm have been presented. These algorithms have fewer multiplicative index operations than those in the conventional CRT and MRC. The large modulo-M operation has been eliminated which reduces the computational overhead.

Integration for coexistence？ Implementation of intercultural health care policy in Ghana from the perspective of service users and providers

OBJECTIVE： In spite of the World Health Organization＇s recommendations over the past decades, Ghana features pluralistic rather than truly integrated medical system. Policies about the integration of complementary medicine into the national health care delivery system need to account for individuallevel involvement and cultural acceptability of care rendered by health care providers. Studies in Ghana, however, have glossed over the standpoint of the persons of the illness episode about the intercultural health care policy framework. This paper explores the health care users, and providers＇ experiences and attitudes towards the implementation of intercultural health care policy in Ghana. METHODS： In-depth interviews, augmented with informal conversations, were conducted with 16 health service users, 7 traditional healers and 6 health professionals in the Sekyere South District and Kumasi Metropolis in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Data were thematically analysed and presented based on the a posteriori inductive reduction approach. RESULTS： Findings reveal a widespread positive attitude to, and support for integrative medical care in Ghana. However, inter-provider communication in a form of cross-referrals and collaborative mechanisms between healers and health professionals seldom occurs and remains unofficially sanctioned. Traditional healers and health care professionals are skeptical about intercultural health care policy mainly due to inadequate political commitment for provider education. The medical practitioners have limited opportunity to undergo training for integrative medical practice. We also find a serious mistrust between the practitioners due to the ＂diversity of healing approaches and techniques.＂ Weak institutional support, lack of training to meet standards of practice, poor registration and regulatory measures as well as negative perception of the integrative medical policy inhibit its implementation in Ghana. Corneal properties in children with congenital isolated growth hormone deficiency

AIM:To compare the corneal parameters of children with congenital isolated growth hormone deficiency and healthy ***:In this cross-sectional,prospective study,50 cases with growth hormone(GH)deficiency treated with recombinant GH and 71 healthy children underwent a complete ophthalmic *** corneal hysteresis(CH),corneal resistance factor(CRF),Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure(IOPg)and corneal-compensated intraocular pressure(IOPcc)were measured with the Ocular Response Analyzer(ORA).Central corneal thickness(CCT)was measured by a ultrasonic ***:The mean age was 13.0±3.0 years in the GH deficiency group consisting of 21 females and 29 males and 13.4±2.4 years in the healthy children group consisting of 41 females and 30 *** was no statistically significant difference between the groups for gender or age(Chi-square test,P=0.09;independent ttest,P=0.28,respectively).The mean duration of recombinant GH therapy was 3.8±2.4y in the study *** mean CH,CRF,IOPg and IOPcc values were 11.0±2.0,10.9±1.9,15.1±3.3,and 15.1±3.2 mm Hg respectively in the study *** same values were 10.7±1.7,10.5±1.7,15.2±3.3,and 15.3±3.4 mm Hg respectively in the control *** mean CCT values were 555.7±40.6,545.1±32.5μm in the study and control groups *** was no statistically significant difference between the two groups for CH,CRF,IOPg,IOPcc measurements or CCT values(independent t-test,P=0.315,0.286,0.145,0.747,0.13 respectively).CONCLUSION:Our study suggests that GH deficiency does not have an effect on the corneal parameters and CCT *** observation could be because of the duration between the beginning of disease and the diagnosis and beginning of GH therapy.
