Fluoride is a key ingredient of many psychiatric drugs like fluoxetine(Prozac■Fluoxetine■).Pregnant women frequently use this drug as they suffer from depression and anxiety disorders during this *** is able to reach the fetus through the placenta and passes to the newborn through *** the present study,female Wistar rats were treated with 5,10,and 20 mg/L fluoxetine(containing 94% fluorides)from pregnancy day 10 to day *** delivery,the levels of the enzymatic antioxidants in the brain of their offspring at postnatal day 2 were *** results showed that,in all fluoxetine exposed groups compared with the control group,there was a significant decrease(P0.05)in the activity of malondialdehyde and creatine *** results suggest that fluoxetine may be a developmental neurotoxicant due to presence of fluoride hence must be used carefully during pregnancy.

AIM: To assess the effect of photoactivated chromophore for keratitis crosslinking(PACK-CXL) in case of severe keratitis with melting on the electrophysiological function of the retina and the optic ***: The study included 32 eyes of 32 patients with smear positive severe infectious keratitis with corneal melting. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. Group I(control group) included 16 eyes received systemic and topical antimicrobial drugs guarded by culture and sensitivity test. Group II underwent CXL and then continued their antimicrobial treatment. Full field electroretinogram(ERG) and flash visual evoked potential(VEP) were done for each patient in both groups basically and then 1 wk, 1 and 3 mo post-treatment to assess the changes in the electrophysiological function of the retina and optic ***: Healing of 10 eyes in group I in comparison to 14 eyes in group II was recorded. The mean duration of healing was 36.56±5.21 d in group I vs 20.2±4.4 d in group II(P<0.005). In group II, ERG showed an insignificant reduction of all parameters of ERG and VEP after CXL. The amplitude of scotopic rod response, oscillatory potential amplitude, flicker amplitude and photopic cone response were insignificantly decreased(P=0.4, 0.8, 0.1, and 0.3 respectively). There were insignificant prolongation of latencies of scotopic rod, oscillatory potential, flicker and photopic cone response(P=0.2, 0.7, 0.5 and 0.1). There was slight delay in latency of VEP without a significant reduction in ***: CXL is an effective technique in treatment of severe infectious keratitis with melting as it halts the melting process with acceptable safety on the retinal and optic nerve function.

Background: FT3 levels in plasma may provide a marker for liver status in cirrhosis. Aim: The aim is to correlate thyroid functions with hepatic status in compensated and decompensated cirrhosis, and to study their effect on development of HCC. Settings and Design: Prospective controlled cohort study. A total of 58 patients with liver cirrhosis were recruited from Kasr AlAiny ER and outpatient clinics. Patients were categorised into compensated (11), decompensated (39) and patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (8). The study also included 12 healthy controls. Methods and Material: Liver function tests, TSH, FT4 and FT3 and abdominal ultrasound and triphasic computed tomography abdominal scans were done. Statistical Analysis Used: Chi-square and unpaired t-tests were used for comparison. One way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis tests were used to compare more than two groups. Spearman Correlation followed by logistic regression analysis of significant variables was used to find predictors of dependent variables. Results: The frequency of patients with low FT3 was significantly higher in patients with liver cirrhosis (48%), and HCC (50%) than control subjects (12%) (p-value < 0.001). Mean serum FT3 was lowest among decompensated patients (2 pg/ml ± 0.7), followed by patients with HCC (2.5 pg/ml ± 0.7) and highest among compensated patients (3.7 pg/ml ± 0.4), p-value < 0.001. Logistic regression analysis showed that low FT3, male gender, ulcer bleeding and encephalopathy were independently associated with the development of HCC (OR, 95% CI: 1.1, 0.3 - 8). Conclusions: Low FT3 is common among patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis and HCC. FT3 shows a significant negative correlation with severity of liver disease and deterioration of liver function. Low FT3 shows a significant independent association with HCC.

Soil salinity is one of the major yield-limiting factors for crop production in many agricultural regions all over the world. Besides following efficient management practices at the field scale to reduce accumulation of salts in the effective root-zone, the effective use of treatments to alleviate the effects of salinity stress and improve crop salt tolerance is a promising solution to ensure crop production in such adverse conditions. A field experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of foliar spray with plant-based biostimulant (i.e. with and/or without 3% yeast extract), three levels of proline (0, 25, and 50 mM), and combined with potassium fertilizers, as potassium sulfate, 48% K2O (0, 50, and 100 kg/fed.) on growth promotion, chemical composition of garlic leaves, bulb quality parameters as well as yield and its components of garlic plant grown under moderate saline soil. Results revealed that the interaction between foliar spray with yeast extract at 3% and proline at 50 mM combined with proper K level at 100 kg/fed., was the best interaction treatment for increasing vegetative growth parameters, i.e. plant height, number of leaves per plant, and mineral contents (N, P, K, S, Ca and Mg in leaves), and proline content of garlic leaves after 135 days from planting time, total yield/fed., and garlic yield quality parameters at harvesting time. In conclusion, the detrimental effects of salinity stress can be alleviated by stress tolerance-inducing compounds, such as yeast extract and proline with proper application rate of K fertilization during the growing season of garlic crop.

Introduction: We report an eight-case series of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Methods: Children who tested positive for COVID-19, met the MIS-C criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO), and were hospitalized at a tertiary hospital in Riyadh from September to December 2021 were identified and their clinical data reviewed. Results: The age at diagnosis is between 4 to 13 years old. Fever, decreased oral intake, gastroenteritis, and abdominal pain were the most common symptoms. All cases showed hyperinflammation with high C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, ferritin levels, and deranged coagulation profiles. Most of the cases had elevated B-type natriuretic peptide (75%) and troponin (100%) levels. However, two cases had cardiovascular involvement. Two patients presented with acute respiratory distress syndrome and required mechanical ventilation. The mean hospital stay was 13.1 days, with seven patients initially requiring intensive care management for ionotropic support. Most cases required broad-spectrum antibiotics, intravenous steroids, intravenous immunoglobulin, and aspirin. All patients recovered and were discharged from the hospital in good clinical condition. Conclusion: Children with COVID-19 are at risk of developing MIS-C. Practitioners must have a high index of suspicion for its diagnosis and should start treatment as soon as possible to prevent unfavorable outcomes.

<i>Leishmania donovani</i>-Induced Immune Dysregulation among Sudanese Patients with Visceral and Post Kala-Azar Dermal Leishmaniases: Possible Roles in Pathogenesis

L. donovani infections (visceral and post kala-azar dermal leishmaniases) are characterized by infection-induced reversible immune suppression. Autoimmunity is a well-documented phenomenon among patients with primary immune deficiencies. This study aimed to study auto-immune phenomena accompanying L. donovani infections. In a prospective case-controlled study and following informed consent, 155 individuals with visceral leishmaniasis (VL;n = 62), post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL;n = 31) and apparently healthy volunteers (n = 62) were recruited. Sera antinuclear (ANA), anti-dsDNA, anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO), anti-smooth muscles (ASMA) and F-actin auto-antibodies were measured using ELISA and indirect immune-fluorescence assay. The mean ages of VL, PDKL patients and apparently healthy volunteers were: 17.5 ± 12.5, 15.0 ± 7.0 and 17.5 ± 9.5 years with Male:Female ratios of 2:0, 1:2 and 1:5 respectively. Significantly high frequencies of F-actin (74.2%;46/62) and ASMA (50%;31/62) auto-antibodies were seen among VL patients (p = 0.003, p = 0.001) compared to apparently healthy volunteers. Likewise, significantly high frequencies of F-actin (64.5%;20/31;p = 0.001), ASMA (42%;13/31;p = 0.003), ANA (36%;11/31;p = 0.001) and anti-dsDNA (16%;5/31;p = 0.01) auto-antibodies were seen among PKDL patients. Development of tissue-based autoantibodies in L. donovani infections probably indicates loss of peripheral tolerance with activation of circulating auto-reactive T and B cells probably contributing to disease pathogenesis (increased bilirubin/liver enzymes, prolonged QT interval/arrythmias and blood cytopenias). Epidemiology of extra pulmonary tuberculosis in Eastern Sudan

Objective: To investigate the epidemiological factors associated with extra pulmonary tuberculosis(EPTB) in Kassala, Eastern ***: Patients infected with TB(pulmonary and extra-pulmonary) documented at the hospital were interviewed with a structured questionnaire used to gather socio-demographic information. The diagnosis of EPTB cases was based on presence of tuberculous granulomas in the histological samples, positive PCR to DNA of mycobacterium tuberculosis, radiological i ndings and l uid analysis suggestive of EPTB and clinical diagnosis with adequate response to anti-tuberculous ***: A total of 985 patients with TB were enrolled in the study, including 761(77.3%) with PTB and 224(22.7%) with EPTB. The mean age(SD) of patients with PTB and EPTB was 33.2(15.4) and 34.7(14.6) years respectively. The prevalence of EPTB was at(22.7%), with TB lymphadenitis 79(35.3%), marking the frequent form of EPTB followed by peritoneal TB 27(12.05%). While residence and occupation were not associated with EPTB, those with lower level of education(OR = 0.3; coni dence intervals(CI) = 0.2-0.5; P < 0.001), female(OR = 8.7, CI = 4.9-15.1, P < 0.001), non vaccination(OR=70.3, CI = 34.2-144.3, P < 0.001), and non smoker(OR = 0.1; CI = 0.06-0.20; P < 0.001), were associated with high prevalence of EPTB. Conclusions: Around one quarter of patients with TB in this study were more likely to have EPTB. Therefore, ef ective strategic plans regarding diagnostic procedures and control measures are needed to reduce the burden of the disease in Sudan.

The Golden Jackal (Canis aureus Linnaeus, 1758), which belongs to the Canidae family, is an opportunist carnivore in the Gaza Strip (365 square kilometers). The current study aims at giving notes on the occurrence and some ecological aspects of the species in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. The study, which lasted 14 years (2007-2020), is descriptive and cumulative in its style. It was based on frequent field visits, direct observations and meetings and discussions with wildlife hunters, farmers and other stakeholders. The findings of the study show that Gazans are familiar with the Golden Jackal to the extent that a Gazan family holds the Arabic name of the animal, which is “Wawi”. The Golden Jackal was sometimes encountered and hunted in the eastern parts of the Gaza Strip, which are characterized by the presence of wilderness areas, intensive agriculture, poultry pens and solid waste landfills. Like other a few mammalian faunas, the adult Golden Jackals enter the Gaza Strip through gaps in or burrows beneath the metal borders separating the Gaza Strip from the rest of the Palestinian Territories and Egypt. Gaza zoos were found to harbor tens of Golden Jackals trapped or hunted by clever wildlife hunters using different means such as wire cages known locally as “maltash” and foothold traps with metal jaws that may cause lesions to the trapped animals. Poisoning and shooting were also common methods used to control the jackals and other carnivores causing harm to agriculture and livestock. The animal was known among the Gazans as an omnivore, feeding on wild and domestic animals in addition to plant materials, garbage and carrions. In conclusion, the study recommends the need to raise ecological awareness to preserve the Golden jackal and to adopt safe control measures for jackals and other carnivores, including the construction of protective fences for agricultural fields and animal pens.
