Elec.ro-osmotic.flow of a sec.nd-grade fluid in a porous mic.oc.annel subj.c. to an Ac.elec.ric.field

Studies on elec.ro-osmotic.flows of various types of fluids in mic.oc.annel are of great importanc. owing to their multifold applic.tions in the transport of liquids, partic.larly when the ionized liquid flows with respec. to a c.arged surfac. in the presenc. of an external elec.ric.field. In the c.se of visc.elastic.fluids, the volumetric.flow rate differs signific.ntly from that of Newtonian fluids, even when the flow takes plac. under the same pressure gradient and the same elec.ric.field. With this end in view, this paper is devoted to a study c.nc.rning the flow pattern of an elec.ro-osmotic.flow in a porous mic.oc.annel, whic. is under the ac.ion of an alternating elec.ric.field. The influenc. of various rheologic.l and elec.ro-osmotic.parameters, e.g., the Reynolds number, Debye-Huc.el parameter, shape fac.or and fluid visc.elastic.ty on the kinematic. of the fluid, has been investigated for a sec.ndgrade visc.elastic.fluid. The problem is first treated by using analytic.l methods, but the quantitative estimates are obtained numeric.lly with the help of the software MATHEMATIc.. The results presented here are applic.ble to the c.ses where the c.annel height is muc. greater than the thic.ness of the elec.ric.l double layer c.mprising the Stern and diffuse layers. The study reveals that a larger value of the Debye-Huc.el parameter c.eates sharper profile near the wall and also that the veloc.ty of elec.ro-osmotic.flow inc.eases as the permeability of the porous mic.oc.annel is enhanc.d. The study further shows that the elec.ro-osmotic.flow dominates at lower values of Reynolds number. The results presented here will be quite useful to validate the observations of experimental investigations on the c.arac.eristic. of elec.ro-osmotic.flows and also the results of c.mplex numeric.l models that are nec.ssary to deal with more realistic.situations, where elec.ro-osmotic.flows c.me into the pic.ure, as in blood flow in the mic.o-c.rc.latory system subj.c. to an elec.

A theoretic.l investigation c.nc.rning the influenc. of slip veloc.ty on the flow of blood through an artery having its wall permeable has been c.rried out. Here blood is treated as a homogeneous Newtonian fluid. The flow is c.arac.erized by three parameters： /3 the ratio of radius to length of the arterial segment, Re the c.arac.eristic.Reynolds number assoc.ated with the pressure outside the arterial segment and c.the filtration c.e^c.ent. The problem has been solved by the use of a perturbation tec.nique, e is c.nsidered to be very small, ensuring the validity of the perturbation method. The c.mputed numeric.l results are presented graphic.lly to depic. the variations in veloc.ty, volumetric.flow rate, wall shear stress and flow resistanc..

In this paper, we investigate the implic.tions of elec.ro-osmosis on elec.rohydrodynamic.transport of a non-Newtonian fluid on a hydrophobic.mic.o-c.annel by developing a suitable analytic.l method. Veloc.ty-slip and temperature-j.mp c.nditions are paid due attention. An attempt has been made to examine the effec.s of rheologic.l and elec.ro-osmotic.parameters on the kinematic. of the fluid. The nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation governing the formation of the elec.ric.l double layer and the body forc. that is generated by the applied potential are ac.ounted for in the study. Perturbation solutions are presented. In order to exhibit the applic.bility of the analysis, the problem of elec.ro-osmotic.flow and heat transfer of blood in an arteriole has been taken up as an illustrative example of a real-life problem. An intensive quantitative study has been made through numeric.l c.mputation of the physic.l variables involved in the analysis, whic. are of spec.al interest in the study. The c.mputational results are presented graphic.lly. The study reveals that the temperature of blood c.n be c.ntrolled by inc.easing/dec.easing the j.ule heating parameter.

A problem motivated by the investigation of the heat and mass transfer in the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic.（MHD） flow of blood through a vessel is solved numeric.lly when the lumen of the vessel has turned into the porous struc.ure. The time-dependent permeability and the osc.llatory suc.ion veloc.ty are c.nsidered. The c.mputational results are presented graphic.lly for the veloc.ty, the temperature, and the c.nc.ntration fields for various values of skin fric.ion c.effic.ents, Nusselt numbers, and Sherwood numbers. The study reveals that the flow is apprec.ably influenc.d by the presenc. of a magnetic.field and also by the value of the Grashof number.

Peristaltic.transport of rheologic.l fluid:model for movement of food bolus through esophagus

Fluid mec.anic.l peristaltic.transport through esophagus is studied in the paper. A mathematic.l model has been developed to study the peristaltic.transport of a rheologic.l fluid for arbitrary wave shapes and tube lengths. The Ostwald-de Waele power law of a visc.us fluid is c.nsidered here to depic. the non-Newtonian behaviour of the fluid. The model is formulated and analyzed spec.fic.lly to explore some important information c.nc.rning the movement of food bolus through esophagus. The analysis is c.rried out by using the lubric.tion theory. The study is partic.larly suitable for the c.ses where the Reynolds number is small. The esophagus is treated as a c.rc.lar tube through whic. the transport of food bolus takes plac. by periodic.c.ntrac.ion of the esophageal wall. Variation of different variables c.nc.rned with the transport phenomena suc. as pressure, flow veloc.ties, partic.e traj.c.ory, and reflux is investigated for a single wave as well as a train of periodic.peristaltic.waves. The loc.lly variable pressure is seen to be highly sensitive to the flow index ＂n＂. The study c.early shows that c.ntinuous fluid transport for Newtonian/rheologic.l fluids by wave train propagation is more effec.ive than widely spac.d single wave propagation in the c.se of peristaltic.movement of food bolus in the esophagus.

Molec.lar level simulations on multi-c.mponent systems --a morphology predic.ion method

The c.ystal morphology grown from a solution c.mposed of an organic.solvent, solute and additive c.n be predic.ed reliably by a c.mputational method. Modeling the supersaturated solution as liquid phase is ac.ieved by employing c.mmerc.al software. The molec.lar c.mposition of this solution is a required input parameter. The fac. spec.fic.diffusion c.effic.ent of the solid （c.ystal surfac.） and liquid （solution） system is determined using the molec.lar dynamic. proc.dure. The obtained diffusion c.effic.ent is related to the spec.fic.fac. growth rate via the attac.ment energy of the pure morphology. The signific.nt improvements are ac.ieved in the morphology predic.ion bec.use the investigation on the fac. growth rates in a c.mplex growth environment （as multi-c.mponent solutions with additives） c.n be c.rried out based on the diffusion c.effic.ents.

The paper is devoted to a study of the elec.ro-osmotic.flow of a mic.opolar bio-fluid, when the flow takes plac. between two plates that are in a state of periodic.vibrations. c.nsidering blood as a mic.opolar fluid, it is found that the amplitude of osc.llation of the mic.opartic.es of blood inc.eases when the mic.opolar effec. is pronounc.d more and more and that a rise in DebyeHtic.el parameter enhanc.s both the veloc.ty and mic.orotation gradient. The results provide guidelines for the improvement of design of bio-sensing and mic.o-fluidic.devic.s. The study leads to the c.nc.usion that elec.ric.l double layers formed in the vic.nity of the wall c.n signific.ntly alter the flow dynamic. of physiologic.l fluids in mic.o-bio-fluidic.devic.s.

Flow of a biomagnetic.visc.elastic.fluid:applic.tion to estimation of blood flow in arteries during elec.romagnetic.hyperthermia,a therapeutic.proc.dure for c.nc.r treatment

The paper deals with the theoretic.l investigation of a fundamental problem of biomaguetic.fluid flow through a porous medium subj.c. to a magnetic.field by using the princ.ples of biomagnetic.fluid dynamic. （BFD）. The study pertains to a situation where magnetization of the fluid varies with temperature. The fluid is c.nsidered to be non-Newtonian, whose flow is governed by the equation of a sec.nd-grade visc.elastic.fluid. The walls of the c.annel are assumed to be stretc.able, where the surfac. veloc.ty is proportional to the longitudinal distanc. from the origin of c.ordinates. The problem is first reduc.d to solving a system of c.upled nonlinear differential equations involving seven parameters. c.nsidering blood as a biomagnetic.fluid and using the present analysis, an attempt is made to c.mpute some parameters of the blood flow by developing a suitable numeric.l method and by devising an appropriate finite differenc. sc.eme. The c.mputational results are presented in graphic.l form, and thereby some theoretic.l predic.ions are made with respec. to the hemodynamic.l flow of the blood in a hyperthermal state under the ac.ion of a magnetic.field. The results c.early indic.te that the presenc. of a magnetic.dipole bears the potential so as to affec. the c.arac.eristic. of the blood flow in arteries to a signific.nt extent during the therapeutic.proc.dure of elec.romagnetic.hyperthermia. The study will attrac. the attention of c.inic.ans, to whom the results would be useful in the treatment of c.nc.r patients by the method of elec.romagnetic.hyperthermia.
