AIM:To investigate matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors(TIMPs) in pouch mucosa of pediatric onset ulcerative colitis(UC).METHODS:In this cross-sectional study,28 patients with pediatric onset UC underwent ileal pouch biopsy 13 years(median) after *** of MMPs-3,-7,-8,-9,-12 and-26 and TIMPs-1,-2 and-3 in samples was examined using immunohistochemichal methods,and another biopsy was used to evaluate the grade of histological *** investigators independently graded the immunohistochemical specimens in a semiquantitative fashion,using a scale marking staining intensity as follows:0 = less than 20 positive cells;1 = 20-50 positive cells;2 = 50-200 positive cells;3 = over 20 positive *** calprotectin and blood inflammatory markers [serum C-reactive protein(CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate] were determined during a follow-up visit to examine correlations between these markers and the expression of MMPs and ***:Of the 28 patients with pediatric onset UC,nine had not experienced pouchitis,whereas thirteen reported a single episode,and six had recurrent pouchitis(≥ 4 episodes).At the time of the study,six patients required *** all of the others,the most recent episode of pouchitis had occurred over one month earlier,and none were on *** four samples depicted no sign of inflammation,and these were all from patients who had not had *** samples were too small to determine the grade of inflammation,but both had suffered pouchitis,the other *** sample depicted signs of colonic *** pouch samples showed expression of epithelial(e) and stromal(s) MMP-3(e,n = 22;s,n = 20),MMP-7(e,n = 28;s,n = 27),MMP-12(e,n = 20;s,n =24),TIMP-2(e,n = 23;s,n = 23) and MMP-3(e,n = 23;s,n = 28) but MMP-8(e,n = 0;s,n = 1),MMP-9(e,n = 0;s,n = 9) and MMP-26(e,n = 0;s,n = 3) and TIMP-1(n = 0,both) were *** samples with low grade of inflammatory activity,the epithe

Prospects of Deliberative Global Governance

Global governance is often equated with international institutions such as the United Nations and the World Bank that were established after World War II to address problems transcending national borders. While these institutions incorporate norms of representative democracy that evolved in national societies, their legitimacy is often questioned on grounds of limited effectiveness and remoteness from the citizens they purportedly serve. The arguments of many democratic theorists that deliberation among ordinary citizens can legitimize policies that heed these views thus bear important implications for global governance. In this paper, the possibility and different ways that civil society enhancing public participation, transparency and accountability in global governance are addressed. The empirical focus will be on the world＇s first global deliberation--WWViews （world wide views on global warming） that was held in 38 countries with all inhabited continents in 2009. The social drivers that encourage innovation in global democratic governance are analysed, as the main successes and challenges of WWViews and sketch three scenarios of the future of deliberative global governance are based on the experiences and plans around global citizen participation. The authors argue that despite some challenges, such as ensuring high quality of deliberation in highly variant policy cultural contexts and building policy pathways conducive to political impact, the prospects of deliberation in helping solve global environmental and policy problems are high, and likely to see cumulative progress in the near future.

由于船体结构受到的外部载荷及载荷承受能力决定了船体结构的损伤程度,因此船舶在冰区海域航行的安全性与其受到的冰载荷直接相关。本文根据极地科考补给船S.A. Agulhas II的原型测量数据,给出了两种艉肩部冰载荷的反演确定方法:一种为根据试验建立的影响系数矩阵法来确定肋骨处受到的冰载荷,另一种为利用Tikhonov正则化建立的三种离散方式来确定外板区域受到的冰载荷。计算结果表明,这两种方法均能克服数据处理过程中的病态性并得到船体结构的冰载荷。

Enzyme Aided Low Temperature Evaporation for Concentration of Active Proteins from Potato Fruit Juice

Extraction of starch from potato leads to formation of potato fruit juice (PFJ), which consists of proteins, fibers, starch and water. PFJ contains 1% - 3% [w/w] of proteins, including protease inhibitors that are potentially valuable for various applications, and could thus bring added value to the potato industry. The use of proteins of PFJ in bioactive form is limited by lack of benign and cost-efficient concentration technologies. The present approach combines a previously introduced low-temperature mechanical vapor compression evaporation technology with option to enzymatic viscosity management in case of high-viscosity fluids. In pilot-scale evaporation, an increase of solid content from 10% to 40% was achieved without major technical challenges. The proposed method offers a low-energy means for the concentration potato industry wastewater and reclamation of valuable proteins in active form.

Modeling the Force-Velocity Relationship in Arm Movement

Modeling the force-velocity dependence of a muscle-tendon unit has been one of the most interesting objectives in the field of muscle mechanics. The so-called Hill’s equation [1,2] is widely used to describe the force-velocity relationship of muscle fibers. Hill’s equation was based on the laboratory measurements of muscle fibers and its application to the practical measurements in muscle mechanics has been problematic. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a new explicit calculation method to determine the force-velocity relationship, and test its function in experimental measurements. The model was based on the motion analysis of arm movements. Experiments on forearm rotations and whole arm rotations were performed downwards and upwards at maximum velocity. According to the present theory the movement proceeds as follows: start of motion, movement proceeds at constant maximum rotational moment (Hypothesis 1), movement proceeds at constant maximum power (Hypothesis 2), and stopping of motion. Theoretically derived equation, in which the motion proceeds at constant maximum power, fitted well the experimentally measured results. The constant maximum rotational moment hypothesis did not seem to fit the measured results and therefore a new equation which would better fit the measured results is needed for this hypothesis.

Comparison of T-2 Toxin and HT-2 Toxin Distributed in the Skeletal System with That in Other Tissues of Rats by Acute Toxicity Test

Twelve healthy rats were divided into the T-2 toxin group receiving gavage of 1 mg/kg T-2 toxin and the control group receiving gavage of normal saline. Total relative concentrations of T-2 toxin and HT-2 toxin in the skeletal system（thighbone, knee joints, and costal cartilage） were significantly higher than those in the heart, liver, and kidneys（P 〈 0.05）. The relative concentrations of T-2 toxin and HT-2 toxin in the skeletal system（thighbone and costal cartilage） were also significantly higher than those in the heart, liver, and kidneys. The rats administered T-2 toxin showed rapid metabolism compared with that in rats administered HT-2 toxin, and the metabolic conversion rates in the different tissues were 68.20%-90.70%.

Irritable bowel syndrome symptom severity improves equally with probiotic and placebo

AIM To determine the effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM on irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) symptoms and quality of life(Qo L).METHODS In this randomized triple-blind trial, adult IBS volunteerswho were recruited according to Rome Ⅲ criteria received 109 or 1010 colony-forming units of NCFM or placebo daily for 12 wk. IBS Symptom Severity Score(IBS-SSS), which constituted the primary outcome, and secondary outcomes, including individual IBS symptoms, IBS-related QoL questionnaire, anxiety and depression, defecation frequency, and stool consistency, were assessed at baseline at the end of the 8-wk runin period, after 4 and 12 wk of intervention, and after a 4-wk *** A total of 340 of 391 randomized volunteers completed the trial. IBS-SSS improved over 12 wk of treatment in all treatment groups, decreasing by a mean ± SD of 44.0 ± 80.2, 50.8 ± 82.4, and 48.3 ± 72.2 in the placebo, active low-dose, and active high-dose groups, respectively. Similarly, secondary outcomes did not differ between treatment groups. However, in a post hoc analysis of volunteers with moderate to severe abdominal pain at baseline(VAS > 35/100), the treatment significantly reduced the sensation of abdominal pain. Pain scores fell by 20.8 ± 22.8, 29.4 ± 17.9, and 31.2 ± 21.9 in the placebo, active low-dose, and active high-dose groups, respectively(P value for placebo vs combined active doses = 0.0460).CONCLUSION NCFM alleviates moderate to severe abdominal pain, consistent with earlier observations of this strain mitigating visceral pain through increased analgesic receptor expression.
