Developing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly process for the production of valuable chemicals from abundant herbal biomass receives great attentions in recent ***,taking advantage of the“lignin first”strategy,corn straw is converted to valuable chemicals including lignin monomers,furfural and 5-methoxymethylfurfural via a two steps *** key of this research lies in the development of a green and low-cost catalytic process utilizing magnetic Raney Ni catalyst and high boiling point ethylene *** utilization of neat ethylene glycol as the sole slovent under atmospheric conditions obviates the need for additional additives,thereby facilitating the entire process to be conducted in glass flasks and rendering it highly convenient for scaling *** the initial step,depolymerization of corn straw lignin resulted in a monomer yield of 18.1 wt%.Subsequently,in a dimethyl carbonate system,the carbohydrate component underwent complete conversion in a one-pot process,yielding furfural and 5-methoxymethylfurfural as the primary products with an impressive yield of 47.7%.

Increasing carbon（C） sequestration and stability in agricultural soils is a key strategy to mitigate climate change towards C neutrality. Crop diversification is an initiative to increase C sequestration in fields, but it is unclear how legume-based crop diversification impacts the functional components of soil organic carbon（SOC） in dryland, including the formation and transformation of particulate organic carbon（POC） and mineral-associated organic carbon（MAOC）. We investigated the decomposition of straw residues, the fate of photosynthesized C,as well as the formation of MAOC and POC fractions using an in situ13C labeling technique in the soybean-wheat intercropping, soybeanmaize intercropping and their respective monocropping systems, with and without cover crops. After 4-year treatments, the total SOC content in bulk soil remained unchanged, while MAOC content increased significantly by 5.6% with intercropping. Moreover, the in situ13C labeling results confirmed that more photosynthesized C was transferred to MAOC, and less was retained in the POC fraction. Intercropping significantly increased total soil N and mineral N content by 15.3% and 13.4%, respectively, and decreased soil and microbial C/N ratio by11.3% and 17.4%, respectively. This outcome, therefore, relieved microbial N limitation and accelerated straw residue ***, the potential of MAOC formation was strengthened for better SOC persistence. Our study suggests that legume-based crop diversification can effectively enrich N and support POC transformation to MAOC, accordingly contributing to the persistent SOC pool and thus potentially achieving C neutrality under climate change in dryland agroecosystems.

为进一步优化调整水库调度方式,以黑泉水库为例,通过计算确定河道适宜生态流量,构建了综合考虑供水、生态及发电目标的水库优化调度模型,并对所得最优解集进一步分析,寻求协调供水、生态及发电效益的水库均衡调度方案。结果表明,黑泉水库的供水目标与生态目标及发电目标间存在明显的竞争关系,均衡方案(以平水年为例)可在河道适宜生态流量保证率达91.7%的同时,使灌溉供水保证率达86.5%,实现了较好的综合效益。研究结果可为黑泉水库科学高效决策提供技术支撑。

Maianthemum is a genus with more than 35 species from the tribe Polygonateae(Asparagaceae),widely distributed between North to Central Americas and eastern Asia with high diversity in the easternHimalayas to the Hengduan Mountains of SW *** most species from SW China form a well-supported clade,phylogenetic relationships within this clade remain *** a broad level of taxon sampling and an extensive character sampling fromeight DNA regions,this study intends to revisit the phylogeny and biogeography of the genus to better understand the divergence patterns of species from SW *** results suggested the monophyly of Maianthemum with recognition of nine strongly supported clades,but backbone relationships among these clades remained largely *** the SWChina clade,individuals from the same species are grouped into different *** results revealed that the fast radiation of the SWChina cladewas occurred in the eastern Himalayas,followed by subsequent radiation in the Hengduan Mountains in the *** disjunctions of Maianthemum in the Northern Hemisphere appear to have occurred multiple times during the late Miocene to the Pliocene,likely resulted by a combination of both vicariance and long-distance dispersal events.

In many astrophysical black hole systems, episodic jets of plasma blobs have been observed, which are much faster and more powerful than continuous jets. A magnetohydrodynamical model was proposed by Yuan et al. to study the formation of episodic jets in Sgr A＊. By taking Sgr A＊ and a stellar mass black hole as examples, we modify the model of Yuan et al. by including the effects of relativity, and further study the relativistic motion and expansion of episodic jets of plasma blobs. Then we study the collision between two consecutive ejections in the modified model, and calculate the magnetic energy released in the collision. Our results show two consecutive blobs can collide with each other, and the released magnetic energy is more than 1050 erg, which supports the idea that a gamma-ray burst is powered by the collision of episodic jets, as suggested by Yuan ＆ Zhang.

Exploring Challenges in Developing a Smart and Effective Assistive System for Improving the Experience of the Elderly Drivers

As the overall population ages, driving-related accidents and injuries, associated with elderly drivers, have risen. Existing research about elderly drivers mainly focuses on factual data collection and analysis, indicating the elderly＇s growing fatal accident rates and their different behaviours compared to younger drivers. However, few research has focused on design-led practical solutions to mitigate the elderly＇s growing fatal accidents, by consid- ering their usability and body conditions, afflicting the elderly, such as decreased vision, hearing, and reaction times. In this paper, first, current worldwide situations on growing fatal accident rates for elderly drivers is reviewed and the key impact factors are identified and discussed with regarding to usability and design trend in the automotive technology for elderly. Second, existing smart vehicle technology-based solutions to promote safe driving are explored and their pros and cons are discussed and anal- ysed. Most of solutions are not created by people with driving difficulties, which are caused by health problems most commonly afflicting the elderly. Thirdly, diverse design-led research activities are taken, such as a survey, observation, and interviews to gain new understanding of what kinds of driving problems elderly drivers have and demonstrate how new system concepts could be developed for the elderly＇s benefits. Finally, it is found that the elderly＇s low vision and late reaction are main factors causing their driving difficulties. Based on this finding, usable vehicle system design ideas have been proposed, by utilising facial expression sensing technology as a solution. The proposed solutions would ensure reducing both the elderly＇s driving problems and high fatal accident rates and provide a more enjoyable driving environment for the elderly population.

The phosphorylation of oligonucleotides and peptides plays a critical role in regulating virtually all cellular *** fully understand these complex and fundamental regulatory pathways,the cellular phosphorylate changes of both oligonucleotides and peptides should be simultaneously identified and ***,we demonstrated a single-molecule,highthroughput,label-free,general,and one-step aerolysin nanopore method to comprehensively evaluate the phosphorylation of both oligonucleotide and peptide *** virtue of electrochemically confined effects in aerolysin,our results show that the phosphorylation accelerates the traversing speed of a negatively charged substrate for about hundreds of time while significantly enhances the translocation frequency of a positively charged ***,the kinase/phosphatase activity could be directly measured with the aerolysin nanopore from the characteristically dose-dependent event frequency of the *** using this straightforward approach,a model T4 oligonucleotide kinase(PNK)further achieved the nanopore evaluation of its phosphatase activity and real-time monitoring of its phosphatase-catalyzed dephosphorylation at a singlemolecule *** study provides a step forward to nanopore enzymology for analyzing the phosphorylation of both oligonucleotides and peptides with significant feasibility in fundamental biochemical researches,clinical diagnosis,and kinase/phosphatase-targeted drug discovery.
