With the exception of the European Union（EU）,the Association of Southeast Asian Nations（ASEAN）is certainly the most successful example of a regional grouping in the *** of ten states in a region that is typified by an extensive difference of ethnicities with different norms,values,religions and languages,ASEAN has successfully attained economic success and peace in a region that has a rich history of *** its initial establishment and potential role and influence were undermined by external observers,ASEAN has definitely proven its doubters wrong throughout its 50-year existence,with the Association managing to adjust to the varying circumstances in geopolitics and economics,becoming a calming force in advocating peace and security,as well as helping to boost the economic growth of its *** addition to this,ASEAN,as a regional organization,also saw a milestone in its integration process,with the establishment of the ASEAN Community in 2015,which is based on three pillars pertaining to economy,political-security,and ***,in spite of these successes,the integration process in ASEAN still goes through much debate by external observers and scholars alike,and rightfully *** is because the integration process in ASEAN has been mainly steered by the self-interests of states,such as sovereignty,security,and regime survival,instead of a shared goal of regional *** forms of integration in the region,such as the establishment of the AFT A and the ASEAN Community,although showing the steps ASEAN has taken to integrate its members,have been considerably limited with the Association still upholding the same principles that guided it through the 20th to the 21st *** example,in terms of the principle of conflict avoidance,although ensuring stability in the short term,these unresolved conflicts have the potential to destabilize integration in the future,thus weakening ASEAN in the ***,the

Downregulation of the DST Transcription Factor Using artificial microRNA to Increase Yield, Salt and Drought Tolerance in Rice

Abiotic stresses like salinity and drought directly affect plant growth and water availability, resulting in lower yield in rice. So, a combination of stress tolerance along with enhanced grain yield is a major focus of rice breeding. It was reported earlier that loss in function of the drought and salt tolerance (DST) gene results in increase in grain production through downregulating Gn1a/OsCKX2 expression. Moreover, dst mutants also showed enhanced drought and salt tolerance in rice by regulating genes involved in ROS homeostasis. In the present study, we proceeded to test these reports by downregulating DST using artificial microRNA technology in the commercial but salt sensitive, high-yielding, BRRIdhan 28 (BR28). This cultivar was transformed with DST_artificial microRNA (DST_amiRNA) driven by the constitutive CaMV35S promoter using tissue culture independent Agrobacterium mediated in planta transformation. DST_amiRNA transgenic plants were confirmed by artificial microRNA specific PCR. Transformed plants at T0 generation showed vigorous growth with significantly longer panicle length and higher primary branching resulting in higher yield, compared to the wild type (WT) BR28. Semi-quantitative RT PCR confirmed the decrease in DST expression in the BR28 transgenic plants compared to WT. T1 transgenic plants also showed improvement in a number of physiological parameters and greater growth compared to WT after 14 days of 120 mM salt (NaCl) stress at seedling stage. Therefore, DST downregulated transgenic plants showed both higher stress tolerance as well as better yields. Furthermore, stable inheritance of the improved phenotype of the DST_amiRNA transgenics will be tested in advanced generations.

Distribution of Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) in polluted rivers of the Juru River Basin, Penang, Malaysia

The influence of physical and chemical parameters on the abundance and diversity of chironomids was studied in six rivers with moderate to highly polluted water in the Juru River Basin. The rivers: Ceruk Tok Kun (CTKR) as reference site, and polluted rivers of Pasir (PR), Juru (JR), Permatang Rawa (PRR), ara (ar) and Kilang Ubi (KUR) were sampled over a period of five months (November 2007-March 2008). Nine chirnomid species: Chironimus kiiensis, C. javanus, Polypedilum trigonus, Microchironomus sp., Dicrotendipes sp., Tanytarsus formosanus, Clinotanypus sp., Tanypus punctipennis and Fittkauimyia sp. were identified. Assessment of their relationships with several environmental parameters was performed using the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Tanytarsus formosanus was the most dominant in the relatively clean CTKR and moderately polluted JR with mean densities of 19.66 and 25.32 m 2 , respectively while C. kiiensis was abundant in more polluted rivers. Tanytarsus formosanus, Dicrotendipes sp. and Microchironomus sp. were grouped under moderate to high water temperature, total organic matter (TOM), total suspended solids (TSS), velocity, pH, phosphates and sulphates. However, Tanypus punctipennis, Fittkauimyia sp., and Clinotanypus sp. were associated with high contents of river sediment such as TOM, Zn and Mn and water ammonium-N and nitrate-N and they were associated with higher dissolved oxygen (DO) content in the water. Chironomus kiiensis, C. javanus and P. trigonus showed positive relationships with TOM, ammonium-N and nitrate-N as well as trace metals of Zn, Cu and Mn. These three species could be considered as tolerant species since they have the ability to survive in extreme environmental conditions with low DO and high concentrations of pollutants. Based on the water parameter scores in all rivers, the highest diversity of chironomid larvae was reported in CTKR. Standard treatment for advanced Prostate Cancer(PCa)consists of androgen deprivation therapy(ADT),but ultimately fails,resulting in the incurable phase of the disease:metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer(mCRPC).Targeting PCa cells before their progression to mCRPC would greatly improve the outcome,if strategies could be devised selectively targeting androgen receptor(ar)-dependent and/or independent compensatory pathways which promote mCRPC *** therapy by targeting the DNA damage response(DDR)along with ADT has been limited by general toxicity,and a goal of clinical trials is how to target the DDR more *** recent years,our lab has identified a key role for the DDR kinase,TLK1,in mediating key aspects of adaptation to ADT,first by promoting a cell cycle arrest(through the TLK1>NEK1>ATR>Chk1 kinase cascade)under the unfavorable growth conditions(androgen deprivation),and then by reprogramming the PCa cells to adapt to androgen-independent growth via the NEK1>YAP/ar>CRPC *** addition,TLK1 plays a key anti-apoptotic role via the NEK1>VDAC1 regulation on the intrinsic mitochondrial apoptotic pathway when the DDR is ***,TLK1 was recently identified as having an important role in motility and metastasis via regulation of the kinases MK5/PRAK and AKT(indirectly via AKTIP).

Incidence, Risk Factors and Short Term Outcome of Acute Kidney Injury among Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome

Background: Cardio-renal syndrome is the leading cause of death globally. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major complication among patients admitted in Coronary Care Unit (CCU) with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). AKI in ACS patients is associated with higher morbidity, mortality and prolong hospital stay. Objective: To determine the incidence, risk factors and short term outcome of acute kidney injury (AKI) among the patients admitted in CCU with ACS. Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted at Department of Nephrology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2013 to December 2013. Following selection criteria a total of two hundred (200) patients with ACS were studied. AKI was defined according to the KDIGO guideline and further categorized by RIFLE criteria. Data of patients with AKI and those without AKI were analyzed and compared by statistical tests. Results: Majority of the study patients were male (79.5%). AKI was developed in 40 of the 200 study patients (20.0%). The mean (±SD) age of the study patients was 60.1 ± 11.1 years in patients with AKI and 55.9 ± 10.1 years in patients without AKI. Our data analysis showed that older age (>65 years), diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and smoking were significantly correlated to the development of AKI. Mortality was significantly high in AKI group (7.15%) compared to no AKI group (1.25%). Out of 27 patients who achieved renal recovery most (80.8%) belonged to risk class. Severity of AKI showed significant effect on renal recovery and final outcome. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that, incidence of AKI among patients with ACS was 20%. Elderly patients, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and exposure to smoking were significantly associated with development of AKI in ACS.

A Trend Analysis of Temperature and Rainfall to Predict Climate Change for Northwestern Region of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one in all the foremost climate vulnerable countries of the world. In recent years, climate change studies over the country get plenty of attention by the researchers and policy makers. A substantial quantity of global climate change studies over the country use climate models to estimate future projections and uncertainties. Maximum temperature, precipitation and their potential future changes are evaluated in an ensemble of the 5th Phase Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project (CMIP5) within the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) diagnostic exercise for the Fifth Assessment Report (ar5) and the available historical data collected by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (Bmd) during the period 1981-2008 in the north-western region of Bangladesh and also the comparison between these two values. It has been found that average maximum temperature shows a positive trend of increase at a rate of 0.29°C and 5.3°C per century respectively, for Bmd data and MPI-ESM-LR (CMIP5) model data. But the rainfall is decreasing at a rate of 8.8 mm and 40.1 mm per century respectively for Bmd data and MPI-ESM-LR (CMIP5) model data. It is seen that July was the maximum monsoon rainfall month and January was the lowest rainfall month. The peak frequency is slightly smaller than 12 months, which indicates that the major events are occurring before ending a year compared to the previous year. According to MPI-ESM-LR (CMIP5) model data, future normal temperature on north-western region will be increased at a rate of 1.62°C during the period 2040-2100.

Chemical and Morphological Characteristics of Particulate Matter Suspended in the Air of the Dhaka University area of Bangladesh

Total suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the urban atmosphere of Dhaka city was collected using a high volume sampling technique for a period of one month (August 2017-September 2017). Chemical characterization of particulate matter (PM) was investigated, and characterized concerning the size distribution, morphological features such as count, total area, average size, perimeter, circularity, aspect ratio (ar), roundness;equivalent spherical diameter (ESD), surface area and volume of PM. The results of elemental analysis showed that the presence of heavy metal in PM was ten to hundred times higher than the standard value prescribed by WHO and USEPA. Several morphological analysis indicated that particles varying in shape from nearly spherical to various irregular shape, had higher surface energy, higher content of Cl and S bearing particles and had a large surface area which can cause greater damage to lungs. The presence of various organic compounds containing functional groups like alcohols, ketones aldehydes, carboxylic acids as well as unsaturated and saturated carbon bonds was observed by FT-IR analysis. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the morphology of the PM. Agglomerates and shoots type particles were mostly seen in SPM.

Optimizing the Global Digital Elevation Models(GDEMs) and accuracy of derived DEMs from GPS points for Iraq’s mountainous areas

Optimizing the combined horizontal and vertical accuracy of the well-known Global Digital Elevation Models(GDEMs) of various resolutions for each country and region especially in Iraq’s mountainous areas is still questionable. All the three GDEMs, approximately, have the same vertical accuracy with the Root Mean Square(RMSE) of ±7.3 m, ±7.6 m and ±6.5 m via 12 fixed Ground Control Points(GCPs) for the Advanced Land Observation Satellite Phased array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar(ALOS PALSar 12.5 m), the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission(SRTM 30 m) and the TerraSar-X(the name of twin satellites) add-on for Digital Elevation Measurement(TanDEM-X 90 m) GDEMs respectively. Moreover, the percentage of outliers that are greater or smaller than ±10 m detection of the height extraction from both the ALOS PALSar and SRTM Digital Elevation Models(DEMs) contains 16.7% and for TanDEM-X was 25%. In this paper,the special DEM is derived using 2123 handheld GPS points for Sulaymaniyah Governorate, Kurdistan region, Iraq. The height extraction by discarding the outliers of 58% gives the RMSE of ±8.0 m in the case of adding geoid heights(N) to the ellipsoidal heights(h) via the Earth Gravitational Model 2008(EGM2008)and ±5.6 m without adding N. It is expected that the derived DEMs will give more accurate results both horizontally and vertically in the mountainous areas when GPS observations are intensified. The horizontal accuracy is validated through extracting hierarchy stream types of the watershed map from the DEMs for higher than 100 pixels length. The ALOS PALSar DEM extracted more numbers of stream orders than ***, based on the criteria of RMSE, outlier detection, and the number of extracted stream orders, the ALOS PALSER DEM is regarded as the optimal GDEM in comparison with the close accuracy of both the TanDEM-X and SRTM DEM.

目的:使用光学相干断层扫描(SD-OCT)比较早期帕金森病(pd)和原发性开角型青光眼(POAG)患者黄斑和视网膜神经纤维层(RNFL)厚度参数。方法:回顾性分析。选取48例早期POAG患者、34例早期pd患者和37例年龄及性别相匹配的健康志愿者(对照组),使用SD-OCT分别测量RNFL和9个象限的黄斑厚度(ETDRS分区)。本研究纳入的早期POAG患者视野检测mdpd组患者采用Hoehn和Yahr(H&Y)及统一帕金森病分级量表(UpdRS)评估pd的严重程度,纳入H&Y I-III期患者。结果:除颞侧RNFL外,三组间RNFL厚度均有显著差异(Ppd组患者黄斑内侧象限厚度无显著差异(P>0.05)。pd组患者病程、UpdRS评分与黄斑厚度和RNFL厚度均呈负相关。结论:通过SD-OCT对早期POAG和pd患者黄斑和RNFL厚度参数进行检测,发现两者出现相似的变薄现象,而在早期POAG组这种现象更为明显,推测青光眼引起的黄斑神经退行性变比pd更具破坏性,但pd患者黄斑中央凹区变薄更为显著。
