How small could a pup sound？ The physical bases of signaling body size in harbor seals

Vocal communication is a crucial aspect of animal behavior. The mechanism which most mammals use to vocalize relies on three anatomical components. First, air overpressure is generated inside the lower vocal tract. Second, as the airstream goes through the glottis, sound is produced via vocal fold vibration. Third, this sound is further filtered by the geometry and length of the upper vocal tract. Evidence from mammalian anatomy and bioacoustics suggests that some of these three components may covary with an animal's body size. The framework provided by acoustic allometry suggests that, because vocal tract length (VTL) is more strongly constrained by the growth of the body than vocal fold length (VFL), VTL generates more reliable acoustic cues to an animal's size. This hypothesis is often tested acoustically but rarely anatomically, especially in pinnipeds. Here, we test the anatomical bases of the acoustic allometry hypothesis in harbor seal pups . We dissected and measured vocal tract, vocal folds, and other anatomical features of 15 harbor seals post-mortem. We found that, while VTL correlates with body size, VFL does not. This suggests that, while body growth puts anatomical constraints on how vocalizations are filtered by harbor seals' vocal tract, no such constraints appear to exist on vocal folds, at least during puppyhood. It is particularly interesting to find anatomical constraints on harbor seals' vocal tracts, the same anatomical region partially enabling pups to produce individually distinctive vocalizations.

Predicting sandy soil moisture content with hyperspectral imaging

In this study,a rapid and non-invasive technology for predicting soil moisture content(SMC)was presented based on hyperspectral imaging(HSI).Firstly,a set of HSI system was developed to collect both spectral(400-1000 nm)and spatial(1620×841 pixels)information from sandy soil samples with variable SMC levels in the *** component analysis(PCA)transformation,K-means clustering,and several other image processing methods were performed to obtain a region of interest(ROI)of soil sample from the original HSI ***,256 optimal spectral wavelengths were selected from the average reflectance of the ROI,and 28 textural features were extracted using a gray-level co-occurrence matrix(GLCM).Data dimensionality reduction was conducted on both the spectral information and textural information by using a partial least square *** latent variables(LVs)extracted from the spectral information,four LVs extracted from the textural information and fused data were used to build regression models with a three-layer BPNN,*** results showed that all of the three calibration models achieved high prediction accuracy,particularly when using spectral information with R^(2)_(C)=0.9532 and RMSEC=***,validation models demonstrate that predicting SMC using fused data is more effective than using spectral reflectance and textural features separately,with a R^(2)_(P)=0.9350 and RMSEP=0.0141,thus proving that the HSI technique is capable of detecting SMC.

Compliance with Medical Treatment in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG) at the Centre for the Application of the Diploma of Specialized Studies in Ophthalmology (CADES/O)

Introduction: Primary open-angle glaucoma, a chronic, potentially blinding disease, requires lifelong medical treatment that demands full patient compliance. The objective was to determine the rate of compliance and to study the determinants of compliance in glaucoma patients followed at CADES/O. Patients and Methods: This was an observational study, which included old and new glaucoma patients. Compliance was assessed on the availability of medication, regularity of dosing schedules, compliance with prescribed doses, and regularity at check-ups. Compliance was judged to be good when at least four (4) of these criteria were met, fair when only three (3) of these criteria were met and poor when only two (2) of these criteria were met. results: Compliance was considered good in 38.4% of cases, fair in 48.2% of cases and poor in 13.4% of cases with an overall compliance rate of 86.6%. The correlation was not statistically significant for age, sex, origin, length of illness, route of administration, instiller, or therapeutic regime. On the other hand, profession, level of education, presence of systemic arterial hypertension, compliance with instillation schedules, prescribed dosage, regularity of treatment, compliance with control visits and the climate of trust between patient and treating physician were the determining factors with the greatest statistical influence on compliance with treatment. Conclusion: Compliance with glaucoma treatment is linked to the patient factor but especially to the doctor factor. Doctors should take their time to explain to patients their disease, its evolution with or without treatment and above all the necessity of a good therapeutic compliance.

tuning the properties of confined water in standard and lybrid nanotubes： An infrared spectroscopic study

Imogolite is a natural nanotubular aluminum silicate clay mineral found in volcanic soils. Its well-defined, tunable structure makes it a good candidate for studying water confinement in a one-dimensional （1D） structure. Water confinement in self-sustaining imogolite thin films was studied using infrared spectroscopy. Two types of synthetic imogolites were investigated： pristine imogolite （IMO-OH） with a hydrophilic inner surface covered with Si-OH groups and hybrid imogolite （IMO-CH3） with a hydrophobic inner surface covered with Si-CH3 groups. Both imogolites have an outer surface that is covered with Al-OH groups. Infrared spectra were recorded in the 20-4,000 cm^-1 spectral range as a function of relative humidity. Analysis of the O-H stretching band provides information on the H bonding of confined water molecules inside and outside the IMO-OH tubes. The scenario for water filling as a function of relative humidity is determined for both systems. Adsorption begins in the IMO-OH tubes at the lowest relative humidity （〈 10%）. The inner surface of the tubes is first covered with water molecules; then, the central part of the tubes is filled, leading to very strong H bonds and a structured spectrum. In contrast, the H bonds of water adsorbed on the outer surfaces of these tubes are weaker. A different scenario is observed for water inside IMO-CH3： Weakly H-bonded water molecules are present, similar to that observed in carbon nanotubes. Water confinement in imogolites is governed by the hydrophilicity of the inner walls. At similar partial pressures, the degree of H bonding depends on the interactions between water and the nanotube wall.

粉末冶金工艺适用于从混溶间隙合金制备形态稳定的固−液相变材料。采用粉末冶金工艺能够获得低熔点活性相颗粒在高熔点惰性基体中分散良好的复合金属材料,防止相变过程中颗粒的离析,从而增加材料热稳定性。组合传统的粉末混合技术(简单混合和球磨)以改善Al−Sn合金的活性相离析和力学性能。事实上,球磨Sn粉可以减少其与Al粉的硬度差异,利用球磨将两种粉末混合会得到细小的显微组织,从而提高力学性能。此外,采用不同的组合方式混粉,热响应取决于显微组织,尤其是活性相颗粒的尺寸。更详细地说,粗大的活性相颗粒可提供快速放热与小的过冷,而小颗粒在大温度范围内凝固更慢。另一方面,活性相颗粒尺寸不会影响熔化和储热。因此,可以通过调控合金的显微组织来调控其热稳定性。

Evaluating Fecal Sieving Tool as an Indicator of Feed Valorization and the Impact of Feeding Strategy on Dairy Cow Performance under Farm Conditions

The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of a faeces sieving tool “Digescan” as an indicator of feed valorization, and to test the influence of feeding strategy on fecal particle size (PS) distribution and weight, milk performance and the possible association between them. Data from 95 trials were used. During each trial, two periods were identified: before and during live yeast probiotic (LYP) supplementation. The LYP used at 5 g/d/cow was Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CNCM I-4407, 1010 CFU/g, Actisaf® Sc47;Phileo by Lesaffre, France). Milk yield and composition were recorded. Fecal samples were taken at the end of each period and sieved with a set of two wire-mesh screens with pore sizes of 5 mm and 2 mm under running tap water. Yeast probiotic supplementation significantly reduced (P 5 mm was accompanied by 1.2 and 0.65 kg/d decrease in MY, 2.5 and 2 kg/d decrease in ECM and 3.2 and 2.6 kg/d in FCM before and during LYP supplementation, respectively. Fecal particle distribution appears to be a practicable tool to predict influences of feeding systems on feed valorization and performance in dairy cows. Live yeast increases dairy performance and decreases the quantity of fecal particles remaining in the two sieves after rinsing.

Ocular Surgical Pathologies in Children Aged 0 to 15 Years in the Bartimée Ophthalmological Clinic in Conakry, Guinea

Context: Childhood eye health is a real public health problem in our context, the consequences of which go beyond vision, affecting education, social participation and future economic productivity. The aim was to study the frequency of ocular surgical pathologies in children aged 0 to 15 years. Patients and Methodius: This study covered a 4 years period from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2020. It was a retrospective study of a descriptive and analytical nature. It concerned all children aged 0 to 15 who had undergone surgery for ocular pathology during the study period and who were included in the operating room register. results: Out of 4974 patients of all ages operated for ocular surgical pathology, 124 were children aged 0 to 15 years or 2.49%. The 9 - 12 age group was the most represented with 29.03%;the mean age was 7.3 years ± 4.6 with extremes of 3 months and 15 years. A male predominance was observed at 62.90%. Pathologies of the lens, cataract and eyelids, traumatic edema represented the most frequent eye conditions in our patients with respectively 51 cases or 41.13% in the right eye (OD), 54 cases or 53.55% in the left eye (OG) and 14 cases or 11.29% in OD and OG followed by endemic limboconjunctivitis of the tropics (LCET), 10 cases or 3.23%, in OD and hemorrhage under conjunctival 13 cases or 10.48% in OG. Cataract surgery with the Technique Manuel Small Incision Cataract Surgery + Implantation in the posterior chamber (MSICS + ICP) was the most used in 74% of cases. General anesthesia was the most widely used anesthetic method in 100% of cases. The clinical course was favorable at 45.97%. Conclusion: We note a relatively low hospital frequency of ocular surgical pathologies in children, with a male predominance. The early consultation period and the improvement of the technical platform could improve their management.
