Meningococcal disease is the acute infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis, which has humans as the only natural host. The disease is widespread around the globe and is known for its epidemical potential and high rates of lethality and morbidity. The highest number of cases of the disease is registered in the semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa. In Brazil, it is endemic with occasional outbreaks, epidemics and sporadic cases occurring throughout the year, especially in the winter. The major epidemics of the disease occurred in Brazil in the 70's caused by serogroups A and C. Serogroups B, C and Y represent the majority of cases in Europe, the Americas and Australia. However, there has been a growing increase in serogroup W in some areas. The pathogen transmission happens for respiratory route(droplets) and clinically can lead to meningitis and sepsis(meningococcemia). The treatment is made with antimicrobial and supportive care. For successful prevention, we have some measures like vaccination, chemoprophylaxis and droplets' precautions. In this review, we have described and clarify clinical features of the disease caused by N. meningitidis regarding its relevance for healthcare professionals.

This paper analyzes the implementation of an algorithm into a FPGA embedded and distributed target location method using the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). The objective is to show a method in which an embedded feedforward Artificial Neural Network (ANN) can estimate target location in a distributed fashion against anchor failure. We discuss the lack of FPGA implementation of equivalent methods and the benefits of using a robust platform. We introduce the description of the implementation and we explain the operation of the proposed method, followed by the calculated errors due to inherent Elliott function approximation and the discretization of decimal values used as free parameters in ANN. Furthermore, we show some target location estimation points in function of different numbers of anchor failures. Our contribution is to show that an FPGA embedded ANN implementation, with a few layers, can rapidly estimate target location in a distributed fashion and in presence of failures of anchor nodes considering accuracy, precision and execution time.

Low energy gamma radiation （0.2-10.0） MeV near the Earth＇s surface has several origins. Primary and secondary cosmic radiations with interactions of very high energy protons （〉 1 GeV） in terrestrial atmosphere are the main sources. The second most important source near the surface of the Earth and in the tropical and equatorial regions is the radon gas （Rn-222） that decays in alpha particles and gamma rays in this energy range. Also the telluric radionuclides 238U, 235U, 40K and 232Th in decays produce gamma radiation with different intensities at different locations on the surface of the Earth. Other sources less present are electrical discharges （lightning strikes） and man-made radioactive sources for medical, dental and industrial applications. In this work, it is shown that measurements of these components during all year 2016 are carried out at the ITA （Technological Institute of Aeronautics） campus in Sao Jose dos Campos, SP, Brazil and their possible correlations with atmospheric phenomena.

In a recent article the authors described a possible process of generating electromagnetic waves in the range of 1-12 Hz caused by diamagnetic currents originated by heat in ionosphere by high frequency waves （HF）. The origin of the HF waves that reach the ionosphere can be sent from the Earth＇s surface （HAARP- High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program） or even solar. Through a SpectranNF-5035 detector, developed by German Aaronia with high sensitivity （1 μV） in a range of 1-12 Hz and low sampling time （5 ms）, it was possible to measure these waves. During the months of July and August of 2016, very dry and away from electrical discharges in the region of S~ Jos~ dos Campos, SP, Brazil were made several series of measurements to detect these waves. The positive results of these experimental observations as well as discussions and suggestions are presented in this paper.

Measurements of gamma radiation （200 keV to 10 MeV） were performed between May 25 to September 30 2016 at ITA （Technological Institute of Aeronautics） in Sao Jose dos Campos, SP, Brazil. Detector and associated electronics were previously calibrated in the laboratory of ITA using radioactive sources Cs-137, Po-210 and Sr-90. These sources provide gamma-ray energies in 0.662 keV alpha particles of 5.4 MeV and 0.90 keV electrons, respectively. Detector is a scintillator Sodium Iodide activated with Thallium [NaI（Tl）] associated to a photomultiplier and electronic devices which gather, store, distribute and structure data so users can analyze them. During the period of May-September, the experimental set was installed in an open room on a tower 25 meters above the ground. Measurements indicated variations of ionizing radiation in function of dry weather, rain, cold fronts passes and presence of fog in the area; the sample time interval was minute by minute. This study discusses the analysis and the dynamics of how to measure meteorological parameters using an ionizing radiation system.

Introduction: The standard treatment for complex wound care is autografting. The advent of dermal substitutes has provided a novel tool for the preparation of the bed to be grafted. However, most types of dermal matrices require the application of a skin graft a second time. Currently, other strategies have been developed to improve the vascularization process, such as negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), which has been reported to reduce the time required for vascular growth and dermal matrix integration and thus achieve a shorter waiting period for autologous graft application. The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of dermal matrix management associated with NPWT in the treatment of complex wounds. Methods: Seven patients with a diagnosis of complex wounds were enrolled in this study between July 1, 2015, and June 31, 2016. After debridement and having an adequate wound bed, patients who met the criteria for the application of combined therapy were treated with dermal substitutes and a negative pressure system. The percentage of graft integration into the wound bed, complications, length of hospital stay, and duration of therapy were analyzed. Results: The mean age was 42.5 ± 16 (39 - 54) years old;three women and four men were included in the study. The approximate size of skin loss was 120.7 ± 75 cm2 (25 - 250 cm2). The combined therapy of dermal matrix plus NPWT was instituted in all cases for a period of 14 days. There were no complications, with 100% graft integration in 6 of 7 cases. Patients were discharged after a mean hospital stay of 5.4 days. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the utilization of combined dermal matrix plus NPWT therapy can be performed safely and effectively in patients with complex wounds with low complication rates and a short hospital stay.

WSN (wireless sensors networks) is a promising research area which has been in center of attention in many applications on telecommunications. Despite of many existing applications, a bunch of algorithms have been created or applied to solve different issues surrounding WSN. An attractive subtopic on research area is Localization Algorithms. Due to the countless applications, it is almost impossible to list all the algorithms applicable to solve sensor"s location problem in WSN over distinguished parameters associated to diverse environments. This paper evaluates a geometrical algorithm, an instance based algorithm and a function approximator algorithm, having the RSSI (received signal strength indicator) as metric to estimate planar coordinates in an indoor and outdoor environment using a WSN based on IRIS mote. The analysis of the WSN is constructed over statistical data obtained from empirical experiments and the observed characteristics of the algorithms. We also estimate the performance for different parameters configurations applied to the algorithms for both indoor and outdoor environment. Also, some comments about the tradeoff between the accuracy and the performance of the algorithms are made objecting to. Also, some objections about the tradeoff between the accuracy and the performance of the algorithms are made when relevant.
