Objective： To evaluate the effect of chitosan （CH） and hydrogen peroxide （H2O） seed coatings and seedling sprinklings on two different maize varieties by measuring their phenology, the H202 presence, the catalase （CAT） activity, and the protein quantity. Methods： Seven groups of ten seeds for each maize variety were treated with CH （2% （20 g/l） and 0.2% （2 g/l）） or H2O2 （8 mmol/l） by coating, sprinkling, or both. Germination and seedling growth were measured. One month after germination, the presence of H202 in seedlings in the coated seed treatments was evaluated. Protein content and CAT activity were determined under all treatments. Results： H2O2 seed coating en- hanced the germination rate and increased seedling and stem length in the quality protein maize （QPM） variety. Seedlings had a higher emergence velocity under this treatment in both varieties. CH and H2O2 sprinklings did not have an effect on seedling phenology. Exogenous application of H2O2 promoted an increase of endogenousH2O2. OH and H2O2seedling sprinkling increased the protein content in both maize varieties, while there was no significant effect on the CAT activity of treated seeds and seedlings. Conclusions： CH and H2O2 enhance some phenological and biochemical features of maize depending on their method of application.

Background: The alteration and loss of habitats are two of the main threats that biodiversity conservation is cur?rently facing up to. The present study describes the effects of a perturbation and restoration in a reedbed habitat on a bird assemblage. We studied the bird community of a wetland of central Spain between 1995 and 2009, during which time an anthropic perturbation altered the original structure of the habitat;subsequently, as a result of restoration works, the habitat returned to its original ***: We evaluated the effects on six population and physical parameters of the birds at three different phases of their life cycles(breeding, wintering and post?breeding migration seasons) before, during and after the habitat alteration. GlM was used to analyze the influence of three independent variables(year, perturbation phase and temperature).Results: The relative abundance and the species richness values decreased when habitat was altered, but then recovered as a result of the regeneration works. This pattern was the clearest amongst specialist species. Breeding success also declined during the perturbation phase and then increased;likewise, the sex ratio changed given that the proportion of male birds increased when habitat was altered. These results are discussed in relation to changes on availability of resources in altered habitats, to the adaptive mechanisms in the exploitation of ecological requirements and to the selection of optimum and sub?optimum habitats by generalist and specialist ***: Ecosystem restoration can favour the recovery of population indexes of specialist passerines, although it depends on the efficiency of the type of restoration activity performed and on the complexity of the habitat.

This paper puts forward a new practical voltage source converter(VSC)based AC-DC converter model suitable for conducting power flow assessment of multi-terminal VSCbased high-voltage direct current(VSC-MTDC)*** model uses an advanced method to handle the operational limits and control modes of VSCs into the power flow *** new model is incorporated into a unified framework encompassing AC and DC power grids and is solved by using the newton-raphson method to enable quadratically convergent iterative *** use of complementarity constraints,together with the Fischer-Burmeister function,is proposed to enable the seamless incorporation of operational control modes of VSC and automatic enforcement of any converter’s operational limits that become violated during the iterative solution ***,a dedicated process for checking limits is no longer ***,all existing relationships between the VSC control laws and their operational limits are considered directly during the solution of the power flow *** applicability of the new model is demonstrated with numerical examples using various multi-terminal AC-DC transmission networks,one of which is a utility-sized power system.

Environmental change is a consequence of many interrelated *** vegetation responds to natural and human activity still needs to be well establishe d,quantified and *** cent satellite missions providing hydrologic and ecological indicators enable better monitoring of Earth system changes,yet there is no automatic way to address this issue directly from ***,we develop an observation-based methodology to capture evidence of changes in global terrestrial ecosystems and attribute these changes to natural or anthropogenic *** use the longest time record of global microwave l-band soil moisture and vegetation optical depth as satellite data and build spatially explicit maps of change in soil and vegetation water content and biomass reflecting large ecosystem changes during the last decade,*** of prominent trends(from-8% to 9% per year) are observed,especially in humid and semi-arid *** further combine such trends with land cover change maps,vegetation greenness and precipitation variability to assess their relationship with major documented ecosystem *** regions emerge from our *** cluster changes according to human activity drivers,including deforestation(Amazon,Central Africa) and wildfires(East Australia),artificial reforestation(South-East China),abandonment of farm fields(Central Russia) and climate shifts related to changes in precipitation variability(East Africa,north America and Central Argentina).Using the high sensitivity of soil and vegetation water content to ecosystem changes,microwave satellite observations enable us to quantify and attribute global vegetation responses to climate or anthropogenic activities as a direct measure of environmental changes and the mechanisms driving them.

Most anemia is related to the digestive system by dietary deficiency, malabsorption, or chronic bleeding. We review the World Health Organization definition of anemia, its morphological classifi cation (microcytic, macrocytic and normocytic) and pathogenic classi-fication (regenerative and hypo regenerative), and integration of these classifications. Interpretation of laboratory tests is included, from the simplest (blood count, routine biochemistry) to the more specific (iron metabolism, vitamin B12, folic acid, reticulocytes, erythropoietin, bone marrow examination and Schilling test). In the text and various algorithms, we propose a hierarchical and logical way to reach a diagnosis as quickly as possible, by properly managing the medical interview, physical examination, appropriate laboratory tests, bone marrow examination, and other comple-mentary tests. The prevalence is emphasized in all sections so that the gastroenterologist can direct the diagnosis to the most common diseases, although the tables also include rare diseases. Digestive diseases potentially causing anemia have been studied in preference, but other causes of anemia have been included in the text and tables. Primitive hematological diseases that cause anemia are only listed, but are not discussed in depth. The last section is dedicated to simplifying all items discussed above, using practical rules to guide diagnosis and medical care with the greatest economy of resources and time.

AIM To evaluate the efficacy of peripheral blood concentrations of angiopoietins(Ang) as cirrhosis biomarkers of chronic hepatitis C(CHC).METHODS Ang1 and Ang2 serum levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays(ElISA) in samples from 179 cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic CHC patients, classified according to the METAVIR *** were compared by non-parametric MannWhitney U test. Subsequently, the association of peripheral concentrations of angiopoietins with the stage of fibrosis was analyzed using Spearman correlation test. Finally, the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of circulating angiopoietins for cirrhosis diagnosis were determined by the study of the respective area under the curve of receiver operator characteristics(AUC-ROC).RESUlTS Peripheral blood concentrations of Ang1 and Ang2 in CHC patients were significantly related to fibrosis. While Ang1 was decreased in cirrhotic subjects compared to non-cirrhotic(P ng2 was significantly increased as CHC progressed to the end stage of liver disease(P nsequently, Ang2/Ang1 ratio was notably amplified and significantly correlated with fibrosis(P nterestingly, the individual performance of each angiopoietin for the diagnosis of cirrhosis reached notable AUC-ROC values(above 0.7, both), but the Ang2/Ang1 ratio was much better(AUC-ROC = 0.810) and displayed outstanding values of sensitivity(71%), specificity(84%) and accuracy(82.1%) at the optimal cut-off(10.33). Furthermore, Ang2/Ang1 ratio improved the performance of many other previously described biomarkers or scores of liver cirrhosis in *** Ang2/Ang1 ratio might constitute a useful tool for monitoring the progression of chronic liver disease towards cirrhosis and play an important role as therapeutic target.

Background The association between parental perception of child's weight and their attitudes towards his/her dietary habits has not been reported *** study aimed to assess the association between parental underestimation of child's weight and parental attitudes towards child's dietary *** We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of SEnDO cohort participants recruited between January 2015 and June *** information was collected through online questionnaires completed by *** calculated crude and multivariable-adjusted odds ratio(OR)and 95%confidence intervals(CI)for unhealthy attitudes towards child's dietary habits associated with parental underestimation of child's *** Sixteen percent of children in the SEnDO project had parents who underestimated their *** who under-estimated their child's weight status were more likely to have unhealthy attitudes toward his/her dietary habits[OR 3.35;95%CI(1.71-6.53)].Conclusions Parental underestimation of child's weight was associated with unhealthy attitudes towards child's dietary *** and public health practitioners should pay attention to the parental perception of child's weight to identify parents who underestimate it as an at-risk group in which to inquire about lifestyle and dietary habits.
