Fatty acids in microalgae and cyanobacteria in a changing world:Contrasting temperate and cold environments

Under the present changing climate conditions and the observed temperature increase,it is of high importance to understand its effects on aquatic microbial life,and organisms’adaptations at the biochemical *** adjust to temperature or salinity stress and avoid cell damage,organisms alter their degree of fatty acids(FAs)***,temperature is expected to have strong effects on both the quantity and quality of FAs in aquatic *** we review some recent findings about FAs sensitivity to climate change in contrasting ***,heat waves may induce changes in the relative abundance of polyunsaturated FAs(pUFA).However,the impact of the exposure to warming waters is different in temperate and polar *** cold marine waters,high concentration of omega-3(ω3)FAs such as eicosapentaenoic acid(EpA)is promoted due to the activation of the desaturase *** this way,cells have enough energy to produce or activate antioxidant protection mechanisms and avoid oxidative stress due to heat ***,under high irradiance and heat wave conditions in temperate environments,photosystems’protection is achieved by decreasing EpA concentration due to desaturase *** FAs are transferred in aquatic food ***,any alteration in the production of essential FAs by phytoplankton(the main source ofω3)due to climate warming can be transferred to higher trophic levels,with cascading effects for the entire aquatic ecosystem.

Mapping the metabolic responses to oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy with in vivo spatiotemporal metabolomics

Adjuvant chemotherapy improves the survival outlook for patients undergoing operations for lung metastases caused by colorectal cancer (CRC). However, a multidisciplinary approach that evaluates several factors related to patient and tumor characteristics is necessary for managing chemotherapy treatment in metastatic CRC patients with lung disease, as such factors dictate the timing and drug regimen, which may affect treatment response and prognosis. In this study, we explore the potential of spatial metabolomics for evaluating metabolic phenotypes and therapy outcomes during the local delivery of the anticancer drug, oxaliplatin, to the lung. 12 male Yorkshire pigs underwent a 3 h left lung in vivo lung perfusion (IVLp) with various doses of oxaliplatin (7.5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg/L), which were administered to the perfusion circuit reservoir as a bolus. Biocompatible solid-phase microextraction (SpME) microprobes were combined with global metabolite profiling to obtain spatiotemporal information about the activity of the drug, determine toxic doses that exceed therapeutic efficacy, and conduct a mechanistic exploration of associated lung injury. Mild and subclinical lung injury was observed at 40 mg/L of oxaliplatin, and significant compromise of the hemodynamic lung function was found at 80 mg/L. This result was associated with massive alterations in metabolic patterns of lung tissue and perfusate, resulting in a total of 139 discriminant compounds. Uncontrolled inflammatory response, abnormalities in energy metabolism, and mitochondrial dysfunction next to accelerated kynurenine and aldosterone production were recognized as distinct features of dysregulated metabolipidome. Spatial pharmacometabolomics may be a promising tool for identifying pathological responses to chemotherapy.

Cyanobacteria are phototrophic organisms with great ecological and economical *** of the genus Microcystis are known for their potential ability to synthesize toxins,notably *** is a growing interest in the evaluation of oxidative stress in relation to the impact of global climate change on natural ecosystems in different trophic *** studies have focused on the analysis of organismal responses to mitigate the damage by controlling the generation of reactive oxygen *** in environ-mental factors caused by climate change generate a situation of oxidative damage in Microcystis aeruginosa as a direct or indirect *** this study we evaluate the effects of ultraviolet radiation and temperature on physiological and biochemical responses of a native ***(strain CAAT 2005-3).The results from the exposure to ultraviolet radiation doses and temperature changes suggest a high ability of *** to detect a potential stress situation as a consequence of reactive species production and to rapidly initiate antioxidant *** catalase activity is an antioxidant protection mechanism in *** for short and long term exposure to different changes in environmental ***,we found a ultraviolet-B radiation threshold dose above which oxidative stress exceeds the antioxidant protection and damage *** addition our results are in agreement with recent findings suggesting that microcystins may act as protein-modulating metabolites and protection against reactive oxygen *** is concluded that cyanobacteria have adaptative mechanisms that could lead to the replacement of species highly susceptible to oxidative stress by others with a higher system of antioxidant protection.

Colombia aims to boost the utilization of mass transportation systems in its major cities while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20%,in alignment with the commitments of the COp21 *** 2020,the transport sector in Colombia accounted for 34.4%of the country’s energy demand and was responsible for~49%of its total CO_(2) *** article presents an assessment of energy consumption,environmental effects and the fuel costs of Bogotá’s bus rapid transit system based on the Activity,Share,Intensity,Fuel methodology.A long-term analysis spanning from 2021 to 2040 was developed using the long-range energy alternatives planning *** conduct this assessment,the tool was calibrated using data from 2019 and *** distinct scenarios based on energy policies implemented in Bogotáwere examined:Business as Usual,Fast Transition,High Growth and Low *** energy consumption and environmental effects,the results underscore the pivotal role of diversifying energy sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels such as ***,the analysis emphasizes the urgent need to accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources such as natural gas and electricity.

Resampling in neural networks with application to spatial analysis

In developing Artificial Neural Networks(ANNs),the available dataset is split into three categories:training,validation and ***,an important problem arises:How to trust the predic-tion provided by a particular ANN?Due to the randomness related to the network itself(architecture,initialization and learning procedure),there is usually no best *** this issue,we provide a framework,which captures the randomness related to the network *** idea is to perform several training and test trials based on the Jackknife resampling *** consists of iteratively deleting a single observation each time from the sample and recomputing the ANN on the rest of the sample ***,interval prediction is available instead of point *** proposed method was applied and tested using pH,Ca and p data obtained by analyzing 118 georeferenced soil *** results,based on the dataset size simulation,showed that 60%reduction in available dataset offers compatible accuracy in relation to full dataset,and therefore a higher cost of sampling in the field would not be *** re-sampling method spatially characterizes the points of greater or lesser accuracy and *** re-sampling method increased the success rate by using interval prediction instead of using the mean as the most probable *** we restrict it to the regression neural network model,the resampling method proposed can also be extended to other modern statistical tools,such as Kriging,Least Squares Collocation(LSC),Convolutional Neural Network(CNN),and so on.

Mirizzi syndrome:History,current knowledge and proposal of a simplified classification

Chronic complications of symptomatic gallstone disease, such as Mirizzi syndrome, are rare in Western developed countries with an incidence of less than 1% a year. The importance and implications of this condition are related to their associated and potentially serious surgical complications such as bile duct injury, and to its modern management when encountered during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The pathophysiological process leading to the subtypes of Mirizzi syndrome has been explained by means of a pressure ulcer caused by an impacted gallstone at the gallbladder infundibulum, leading to an inflammatory response causing first external obstruction of the bile duct, and eventually eroding into the bile duct and evolving to a cholecystocholedochal or cholecystohepatic fistula. This article reviews the life of pablo Luis Mirizzi, describes the earlier and later descriptions of Mirizzi syndrome, discusses the pathophysiological process leading to the development of these uncommon fistulas, reviews the current diagnostic modalities and surgical approaches and finally proposes a simplified classification for Mirizzi syndrome intended to standardize the reports on this condition and to eventually develop a consensual surgical approach to this unexpected and seriously dangerous condition.

Optimization for performance-based design under seismic demands, including social costs

performance-based design in earthquake engineering is a structural optimization problem that has, as the objective, the determination of design parameters for the minimization of total costs, while at the same time satisfying minimum reliability levels for the specifi ed performance criteria. Total costs include those for construction and structural damage repairs, those associated with non-structural components and the social costs of economic losses, injuries and fatalities. This paper presents a general framework to approach this problem, using a numerical optimization strategy and incorporating the use of neural networks for the evaluation of dynamic responses and the reliability levels achieved for a given set of design parameters. The strategy is applied to an example of a three-story offi ce building. The results show the importance of considering the social costs, and the optimum failure probabilities when minimum reliability constraints are not taken into account.
