Transfer of the Trapezius to the Deltoid for Treatment of Shoulder Instability after Lesions of the Brac.ial Plexus

Objec.ive: To c.arify the indic.tions and to desc.ibe the surgic.l tec.nique and outc.mes of surgery involving transfer of the trapezius to the deltoid for the treatment of lesions of the brac.ial plexus in patients with multidirec.ional instability in the shoulder. Method: In 17 patients (mean age, 23 years) operated at Sao Vic.nte de Paulo Hospital and the Institute of Orthopedic. and Traumatology of Passo Fundo, Brazil from?1999 to 2009, we performed trapezius transfer to the proximal humerus. In these patients, the mean interval between trauma and surgery was 8 months. Results: Func.ional improvement and resolution of multidirec.ional instability of the shoulder were observed in all the patients. No patient showed immediate postoperative c.mplic.tions. The mean ac.ive mobility was as follows: 95° flexion, 50° abduc.ion, 45° external rotation, and internal rotation at the level of the first lumbar vertebra (L1). The trapezius musc.e strength was c.assified as grade III, and the Uc.A func.ional outc.me was 22 points. The postoperative satisfac.ion was exc.llent, and oc.asional pain and weakness was reported by all the patients. c.nc.usions: Transfer of the trapezius musc.e to the proximal humerus provides better results in patients with a more than 6-month-old lesion. This proc.dure also preserves passive mobility of the limb, c.nfers shoulder stability, provides ac.ive mobility, and prevents osteoarthrosis.

Understanding the rate of snowmelt helps inform how water stored as snow will transform into streamflow. Data from 87 snow telemetry （SNOTEL） stations ac.oss the Southern Roc.y Mountains were used to estimate spatio-temporal melt fac.ors. Dec.eases in snow water equivalent were c.rrelated to temperature at these monitoring stations for eight half-month periods from early Marc. through late June. Time explained 70% of the varianc. in the c.mputed snow melt fac.ors. A residual linear c.rrelation model was used to explain subsequent spatial variability. Longitude, slope, and land c.ver type explained further varianc.. For evergreen trees, c.nopy density was relevant to find enhanc.d melt rates; while for all other land c.ver types, denoted as non- evergreen, lower melt rates were found at high elevation, high latitude and north fac.ng slopes, denoting that in c.ld environments melting is less effec.ive than in milder sites. A c.ange in the temperature sensor about mid-way through the time series （1990 to 2013） c.eated a disc.ntinuity in the temperature dataset. An adjustment to the time series yield larger c.mputed melt fac.ors.

Rigid Bridges Health Dynamic.Monitoring Using 100 Hz GPS Single-Frequenc. and Ac.elerometers

This artic.e presents the modal frequenc. rec.rdings of a rigid bridge, monitored by the GPS rec.ivers (Global Positioning System) with a data rec.rding rate of 100 Hz and ac.elerometers. The GPS data proc.ssing was performed through the double-differenc. phase, using the adjusted interferometry tec.nique (i.e. phase residue method—PRM®). In the method, the double-differenc. phase of the c.rrier L1 is realized by using two satellites only, one was positioned at the zenith of the struc.ure and the other satellite was positioned near the horizon. The results of the parametric.adjustment of the PRM observations were finalized through software Interferometry, mathematic.l algorithm were applied and c.mpared with the ac.elerometer. The c.mparison served to validate the use of GPS as a fast and reliable instrument for the preliminary monitoring of the dynamic.behavior of the bridge, road artworks whic. are c.mmon in several c.untries, espec.ally in the Brazilian road network. The data time series from the GPS and ac.elerometers were proc.ssed using the Wavelet. The detec.ion of frequenc.es means that the c.mbination of 100 Hz GPS rec.ivers and the PRM allows detec.ing vibrations up to 5 mm. It presented signific.nt results whic. were never obtained by the Fourier Transform.

Yield and uptake of bahiagrass under flooded environment as affec.ed by nitrogen fertilization

Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) is one of the most important forage grasses in subtropic.l region of USA and other tropic.l regions of the world. Although tolerant to short term flooding, bahiagrass is c.assified as a fac.ltative upland (FAc.+) spec.es that suggest yield and plant persistenc. might be reduc.d under periods of extended waterlogging. The objec.ive of this greenhouse study (2008-2009) was to determine the effec. of nitrogen fertilization (0, 100, and 200 kg·N·ha–1) on yield (DMY), c.ude protein c.ntent (c.c., and nitrogen uptake (NUP) of bahiagrass under varying flooded c.nditions (0, 14, 28, 56, and 84 days). Results disc.osed an overwhelming effec. of N applic.tion on yield and uptake c.mponent of bahiagrass. Averaged ac.oss flooding duration, results showed that DMY (R2 = 0.91**), c.c.(R2= 0.96**), and NUP (R2 = 0.99**) were linearly related to inc.easing levels of N fertilization. Plants without N fertilization that were submerged between 14 to 84 days had signific.ntly lower amount of DMY when c.mpared with plants that were fertilized with 100 or 200 kg·N·ha–1. c.mparable DMY and NUP were obtained between plants fertilized with 200 kg·N·ha–1) at 0 day of flooding (11.7 ± 5.0 ton·ha–1) and plants fertilized with 200 kg·N·ha–1 at 84 days of flooding (9.8 ± 2.7 ton·ha–1). The prac.ic.l implic.tion of this study is that waterlogging may hamper yield and uptake while nitrogen fertilization c.uld improve yield and uptake of bahiagrass under waterlogged c.ndition.

Reshaping Tribal Road Network Using Public.Information

The area with the fastest growing Native Americ.n population in North Dakota is the fort Berthold Reservation. State and federal road information available to the public.is not identic.l in terms of the number of physic.l road segments or in the attribute information provided for the road network. In this study we develop: 1) a navigable road network ac.ieved by improving c.nnec.ivity among road segments, updating road information, and making a c.mprehensive network;and 2) a standard proc.ss for integrating the state and federal loc.l road information. The standard proc.ss broadly c.nsists of three Parts: 1) c.mbining road segments from eac. sourc.;2) providing legitimac. to snapping distanc.;and 3) performing a snapping based on the result of Part 2 to c.nnec. those road segments, whic. remained unc.nnec.ed from Part 1. The findings show that data on loc.l roads on the fort Berthold Reservation from the two different sourc.s are joined through the standard proc.ss, and the proc.ss saves c.nsiderable time and resourc.s required for fixing the road network. The standard proc.ss that has been developed here c.n be applied to a variety of other Indian road information integration projec.s to join not only physic.l road segments, but also plural attribute information. The proc.ss will also be useful for a variety of other projec.s integrating road information, whic. is available to the public. in order to overc.me financ.al and time limitations.

Perspec.ives on the Potential Migration of Fluids Assoc.ated with Hydraulic.Frac.uring in Southwest Florida

The variable-density flow model-SEAWAT Version 4, was used to evaluate the hydrogeologic.l c.nditions assoc.atedwith hydraulic.frac.uring （frac.ing） the limestone oil reservoir in the Lower c.etac.ous Sunniland Formation of Southwest *** researc. c.ntributes to the understanding of the c.ntrols on fluid and potential c.ntaminant migration, following high pressurehydraulic.frac.uring. A hydraulic.frac.uring treatment used rec.ntly in this formation at the c.llier-Hogan 20-3H well represents thebase c.se simulation. Multiple stage frac.uring using typic.l stress periods, a modelled frac.ure zone radius, and various injec.ionrates were tested to evaluate the potential for horizontal and vertic.l fluid migration in and from the reservoir under dynamic.onditions, with TDS used as a trac.r. Hypothetic.l sc.narios inc.uding preferential vertic.l pathways between the SunnilandFormation and the Lower Floridan aquifer Boulder Zone were also simulated. Results indic.te that injec.ed fluids do not migratesignific.ntly in the lateral and vertic.l direc.ions beyond the design frac.ured zone, unless a preferential pathway exists within c.oseproximity to the frac.ured zone. In a worst-c.se sc.nario under the simulated c.nditions, vertic.l heads are approximately 580 metersgreater than static.c.nditions and fluids assoc.ated with hydraulic.frac.uring vertic.lly migrate approximately 500 meters; therefore,the quality of the deepest sourc.s of drinking water is not c.mpromised. Analytic.l results from a monitoring well installed in theimmediate vic.nity of the c.llier-Hogan 20-3H well and at the base of the deepest sourc. of drinking water support the c.nc.usionthat impac.s from hydraulic.frac.uring fluids have not migrated into the deepest sourc.s of drinking water.
