Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and liver transplantation-Where do we stand?

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease/nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NAFLD/NASH) is a challenging and multisystem disease that has a high socioeconomic impact. NAFLD/NASH is a main cause of macrovesicular steatosis and has multiple impacts on liver transplantation(LT), on patients on the waiting list for transplant, on posttransplant setting as well as on organ donors. Current data indicate new trends in the area of chronic liver disease. Due to the increased incidence of metabolic syndrome(Met S) and its components, NASH cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma caused by NASH will soon become a major indication for LT. Furthermore, due to an increasing incidence of Met S and, consequently, NAFLD, there will be more steatotic donor livers and less high quality organs available for LT, in addition to a lack of available liver allografts. Patients who have NASH and are candidates for LT have multiple comorbidities and are unique LT candidates. Finally, we discuss long-term grafts and patient survival after LT, the recurrence of NASH and NASH appearing de novo after transplantation. In addition, we suggest topics and areas that require more research for improving the health care of this increasing patient population.

Splenectomy with chemotherapy vs surgery alone as initial treatment for splenic marginal zone lymphoma

AIM： To evaluate the clinical characteristics of splenic marginal-zone lymphoma （SMZL） following antigen expression and the influence of therapeutic approaches on clinical outcome and overall survival （OS）.METHODS： A total of 30 patients with typical histological and immunohistochemical SMZL patterns were examined. Splenectomy plus chemotherapy was applied in 20 patients, while splenectomy as a single treatment-option was performed in 10 patients. Prognostic factor and overall survival rate were analyzed.RESULTS： Complete remission （CR） was achieved in 20 （66.7%）, partial remission （PR） in seven （23.3%）, and lethal outcome due to disease progression occurred in three （10.0%） patients. Median survival of patients with a splenectomy was 93.0 mo and for patients with splenectomy plus chemotherapy it was 207.5 mo （Log rank = 0.056, P 〉 0.05）. Time from onset of first symptoms to the beginning of the treatment （mean 9.4 too） was influenced by spleen dimensions, as measured by computerized tomography and ultra-sound （t = 2.558, P = 0.018）. Strong positivity （＋＋＋） of CD20 antigen expression in splenic tissue had a positive influence on OS （Log rank = 5.244, P 〈 0.05）. The analysis of factors interfering with survival （by the Kaplan-Meier method） revealed that gender, general symptoms, clinical stage, and spleen infiltration type （nodular vs diffuse） had no significant （P 〉 0.05） effects on the OS. The expression of other antigens （immunohistochemistry） also had no effect on survival-rate, as measured by a χ^2 test （P 〉 0.05）.CONCLUSION： Initial splenectomy combined with chemotherapy has been shown to be beneficial due to its advanced remission rate/duration; however, a larger controlled clinical study is required to confirm our findings.

＜正＞ In this paper formation adaptation for mobile multi-agent systems with limited sensor information is studied. Based on a switching control algorithm the separations and bearing angles of the formation can be changed arbitrarily. The control algorithms require only information available from on-board sensors, and in particular, only need very coarse estimation of the reference speed.

Killing of p53-deficient hepatoma cells by parvovirus H-1 and chemotherapeutics requires promyelocytic leukemia protein

AIM: To evaluate the synergistic targeting and killing of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells lacking p53 by the oncolytic autonomous parvovirus (PV) H-1 and chemotherapeutic agents and its dependence on functional promyelocytic leukemia protein (PML). METHODS: The role of p53 and PML in regulating cy-totoxicity and gene transfer mediated by wild-type (wt) PV H-1 were explored in two pairs of isogenic human hepatoma cell lines with different p53 status. Further-more,H-1 PV infection was combined with cytostatic drug treatment. RESULTS: While the HCC cells with different p53 status studied were all susceptible to H-1 PV-induced apoptosis,the cytotoxicity of H-1 PV was morepronounced in p53-negative than in p53-positive cells. Apoptosis rates in p53-negative cell lines treated by genotoxic drugs were further enhanced by a treatment with H-1 PV. In flow cytometric analyses,H-1 PV infection resulted in a reduction of the mitochondrial transmembrane potential. In addition,H-1 PV cells showed a significant increase in PML expression. Knocking down PML expression resulted in a striking reduction of the level of H-1 PV infected tumor cell death. CONCLUSION: H-1 PV is a suitable agent to circumvent the resistance of p53-negative HCC cells to genotoxic agents,and it enhances the apoptotic process which is dependent on functional PML. Thus,H-1 PV and its oncolytic vector derivatives may be considered as therapeutic options for HCC,particularly for p53-negative tumors.

Specific cell subpopulations identified as cancer stem cells(CSCs)can be found in basal cell carcinoma(BCC).Generally,CSCs have a marked trans-differentiation potential that could potentially be used in differentiation ***,there are no studies regarding BCC CSCs *** aim of the study was to analyze the characteristic of CSCs of BCC with emphasis on their differentiation potential upon specific *** staining and cell morphology were used for differentiation confirmation,along with the expression analysis of osteogenic(ALP,BSP,Runx2,OCN,BMP2),chondrogenic(COL1 and COL2A1),adipogenic(PPAR-γ)and neurogenic(Nestin and MAP2)*** CSCs differentiated into osteogenic and chondrogenic lineages,as judged by staining and high expression of specific markers(from 2-to 92-fold higher upon induction).Concomitantly with differentiation,the levels of cancer stem cell markers decreased in the ***-differentiation and neuro-differentiation were *** conclusion,BCC CSCs exhibit the capacity to trans-differentiate,a characteristic that may potentially be useful in the development of new strategies for the treatment of aggressive BCCs.

Non-Native Insects in Urban and Forest Areas of Slovenia and the Introduction of Torymus sinensis with Dryocosmus kuriphilus

We survey non-native insects species in whole territory of Slovenia. Data on non-native species were collected in field, and we also used results of projects in which we participated and with overview of literature data in scientific pub-lications. Correspondence Analysis (CA) of data was carried out with the soft-ware Statgraphics Centaurion XVI, U.S.A. Up to 254 non-native insect species are present: around 83% are phytophagous (43% feed on woody plants, 40% on other plants);around 12% are non-phytophagous;and 5% are parasitoids or predators of other insects or mammals. Among the phytophagous species, Hemiptera predominates (with 38.2%), followed by Coleoptera (29.8%) and Lepidoptera (14.5%). Non-native insects that do not feed on plants include Coleoptera (80%), Lepidoptera (6.5%), Hymenoptera (6.5%) and Diptera (6.5%). Most of phytophagous species are associated with introduction of plants on which they are specialists, but some have also shifted from introduced to native plant hosts. 36 non-native phytophagous species (14.17% of all non-native insects) have become harmful plant pests of urban trees and crops. 20 appear on woody plants, but only Dryocosmus kuriphilus, appears in urban forest areas. In the past decades species such as D. kuriphilus, Leptoglossus occidentalis, Xylosandrus germanus, Gnathotrichus materiarius, Dasineura gledichiae, Phyllonorycter issikii, Cinara curvipes, Ophiomyia kwansonis have been recorded in parks and forests. Some non-native species are spreading in Slovenian urban forests and affect economic, ecological and other forest and urban forest functions. The number of harmful insects in forests is extremely small probably due to high diversity of the forest ecosystem, where close-to-nature forest management is practiced, which retains forest’s self-regulatory ability to control pests. Comparative Analysis of Managerial Ownership and Its Effect on Corporate Performance in Selected Asian and European Transition Economies

This paper analyzes determinants and consequences of managerial ownership within ownership structures of the selected European and Asian transition countries. Focus of the analysis is the influence of the specific unification of ownership and control on corporate performance. Findings in the paper are based on research that produced empirical data for Croatia which is subsequently compared with evidence from other Asian and European transition countries facing the same issues. Consequently, transitional ownership structures, influenced by actual privatization process, like emergent corporate governance mechanisms, highly concentrated ownership and undeveloped markets for corporate control are also described. Research findings show that direct or indirect managerial ownership are important phenomena in transition countries, research has also shown that stable and concentrated managerial ownership have positive effects on firms＇ profitability in the observed transitional environments.

A Wideband Circularly Polarized Jeans-Based Antenna at 2.45 GHz

Development of textile antennas is an important segment towards the goal of creating smart clothing. In this paper, we report on a jeans-based circularly polarized textile antenna designed for the E-band (around 2.45 GHz). We present three variations of the design and the respective results. The antenna comprises a multi-layer jeans-fabric as the substrate, a conductive fabric as the patch, which is concealed with another layer of jeans, and the ground plane is formed by either a cooper foil or another conductive fabric. A multi-layer structure was chosen to provide a wider bandwidth and better efficiency, whereas the upper surface of the antenna was covered by one more layer of jeans to both make the antenna less conspicuous, when worn on the arm, and protect the patch and substrate from mechanical damages and moisture. All three variants are characterized by a good realized gain of about 3 dB, a wide beam width and a wide bandwidth of 21% or better, around 2.45 GHz, having the radiation efficiency around 36%, and front-to-back ratio of 5 dB or better, with the ground plane being just slightly larger than the patch.
