VOC emitted by biopharmaceutical industries:Source profiles,health risks,and secondary pollution

The biopharmaceutical industry contributes substantially to volatile organic compounds(VOCs)emissions,causing growing concerns and social developmental conflicts.This study conducted an on-site investigation of the process-based emission of VOCs from three biopharmaceutical enterprises.In the workshops of the three enterprises,26 VOCs were detected,which could be sorted into 4 classes:hydrocarbons,aromatic hydrocarbons,oxygen-containing compounds,and nitrogen-containing compounds.Ketones were the main components of waste gases,accounting for 44.13%-77.85%of the overall VOCs.Process-based source profiles were compiled for each process unit,with the fermentation and extraction units of tiamulin fumarate being the main source of VOC emissions.Dimethyl heptanone,vinyl acetate,diethylamine,propylene glycol methyl ether(PGME),and benzene were screened as priority pollutants through a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation system.Ground level concentration simulation results of the Gauss plume diffusion model demonstrated that the diffusivity of VOCs in the atmosphere was relatively high,indicating potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks 1.5-2 km downwind.Furthermore,the process-based formation potentials of ozone and secondary organic aerosols(SOAs)were determined and indicated that N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone,dimethyl heptanone,and PGME should be preferentially controlled to reduce the ozone formation potential,whereas the control of benzene and chlorobenzene should be prioritized to reduce the generation of SOAs.Our results provide a basis for understanding the characteristics of VOC emission by biopharmaceutical industries and their diffusion,potentially allowing the development of measures to reduce health risks and secondary pollution.

Discrete Morse Flow for Yamabe Type Heat Flows

In this paper,we study the discrete Morse flow for either Yamabe type heat flow or nonlinear heat flow on a bounded regular domain in the whole space.We show that under suitable assumptions on the initial data g one has a weak approxi-mate discrete Morse flow for the Yamabe type heat flow on any time interval.This phenomenon is very different from the smooth Yamabe flow,where the finite time blow up may exist.

The paper considers partially observed optimal control problems for risk-sensitive stochastic systems,where the control domain is non-convex and the diffusion term contains the control v.Utilizing Girsanov’s theorem,spike variational technique as well as duality method,the authors obtain four adjoint equations and establish a maximum principle under partial information.As an application,an example is presented to demonstrate the result.

Multi-scale dendritic patterns sequentially superimposed in a primary semi-solid matrix

The principle and control for solidification present crucial challenges.Through in situ and real time observation on the solidification of M50 bearing steel,here we discovered that the base of conventional dendritic arms is constituted by a primary semi-solid matrix.Due to the superimposition of temperature fluctuations from the large to the subtle scale,multi-scale dendritic patterns will sequentially emerge and evolve in the primary semi-solid matrix.These findings redefine the essence of multi-scale dendrites as the multi-scale segregation patterns in the primary semi-solid matrix,reconstitute the time and space sequence in the formation of multi-scale dendrites,and reveal the superimposition of temperature fluctuation as the driving principle.These new understandings will fundamentally influence the solidification field.These results also indicate important engineering applications,such as designing multi-scale dendrites,controlling the dendritic segregation and eliminating the detrimental eutectics.

Relationship of RhoA signaling activity with ezrin expression and its significance in the prognosis for breast cancer patients

Background We have recently reported that RhoA may regulate the invasion and metastasis of breast cancer cells as an upstream signal of ezrin in vitro. In this study, we examined the relationship of RhoA signaling activity with ezrin expression in breast cancer and its prognostic significance in patients with breast cancer. Methods Paraffin tumor sections of breast cancer were collected retrospectively from 487 patients diagnosed between 2001 and 2004. Immunohistochemical methods were used to detect the expression of RhoA, phosphorylated （activated） RhoA, and ezrin. Results Ezrin overexpression was detectable in 15.2% of 487 invasive breast cancers. The majority （85.1%） of ezrin-overexpressing tumors coexpressed phosphorylated RhoA; 78.8% of tumors with phosphorylated RhoA cooverexpressed ezrin. Patients whose cancers showed overexpression of ezrin or expression of phosphorylated RhoA had shorter survival rates. Conclusions RhoA activation is important in human breast cancer due to its upregulation of ezrin; thus, agents that target phosphorylated RhoA may be useful in the treatment of tumors with ezrin overexpression.

An Empirical Model of Tropical Cyclone Intensity Forecast in the Western North Pacific

The relative impact of environmental parameters on tropical cyclone(TC) intensification rate(IR) was investigated through a box difference index(BDI) method, using TC best track data from Joint Typhoon Warning Center and environmental fields from the NCEP final analysis data over the western North Pacific(WNP) during 2000–2018.There are total 6307 TC samples with a 6-h interval, of which about 14% belong to rapid intensification(RI) category. The analysis shows that RI occurs more frequently with higher environmental sea surface temperature, higher oceanic heat content, and lower upper-tropospheric temperature. A moderate easterly shear is more favorable for TC intensification. TC intensification happens mostly equatorward of 20°N while TC weakening happens mostly when TCs are located in the northwest of the basin. Mid-tropospheric relative humidity and vertical velocity are good indicators separating the intensification and non-intensification groups. A statistical model for TC intensity prediction was constructed based on six environmental predictors, with or without initial TC intensity. Both models are skillful based on Brier skill score(BSS) relative to climatology and in comparison with other statistical models, for both a training period(2000–2018) and an independent forecast period(2019–2020).

Carrier-driven magnetic and topological phase transitions in twodimensional III-V semiconductors

III-V semiconductors such as GaAs are widely studied as promising candidates for high-speed integrated circuit.Despite these applications for conventional bulk structures,their fundamental physical properties in the nanoscale limit are still in scarcity,which is of great importance for the development of nanoelectronics.In this work,we demonstrate that the III-V semiconductor MX(M=Al,Ga,In;X=P,As,Sb)in its two-dimensional(2D)limit could exhibit double layer honeycomb(DLHC)configuration and distorted tetrahedral coordination,according to our first-principles calculations with HSE06 hybrid functional.It is found that surface reconstruction endows 2D III-V DLHCs with pronouncedly different electronic and magnetic properties from their bulk counterparts due to strong interlayer coupling.Mexican-hat-shape bands emerge at the top valence bands of pristine AlP,GaP,InP,AlAs,and InAs DLHCs,inducing the density of states showing a sharp van Hove singularity near the Fermi level.As a result,these DLHCs exhibit itinerant magnetism upon moderate hole doping,while the rest GaAs,AlSb,GaSb,and InSb DLHCs become magnetic under tensile strain with hole doping.With an exchange splitting of the localized pz states at the top valence bands,the hole-doped III-V DLHCs become half-metals with 100%spin-polarization.Remarkably,the InSb DLHC shows inverted band structure near the Fermi level,bringing about nontrivial topological band structures in stacked InSb DLHC due to the strong spin-orbital coupling.These III-V DLHCs expand the members of 2D material family and their exotic magnetic and topological properties may offer great potential for applications in the novel electronic and spintronic devices.
