Theoretical Study of the multiferroic Behavior of the magnetic relaxor Ferroelectric CdCr<sub>2</sub>S<sub>4</sub>

Using a microscopic model and the replica method as well as the Green’s function theory, we have investigated the relaxor and multiferroic behavior of CdCr2S4. The magnetization, the remanent polarization Pr and the real part of the dielectric function are studied theoretically as a function of temperature, with and without a magnetic field, respectively. The magnetization and the polarization exist together below the magnetic phase transition temperature. Pr decreases whereas increases and the peak shifts to smaller temperature values with increasing magnetic field h. moreover, the temperature and electric field E dependence of the magnetization m is also discussed. A kink is observed around the ferroelectric transition temperature. The kink is deeper for stronger electric fields and anharmonic spin-phonon interactions.

Impact of relative contraindications on the use, benefits, and risks of anticoagulant prophylaxis in atrial fibrillation: analysis of a claims database

Background: many individuals with atrial fibrillation (AF) do not receive recommended anticoagulant prophylaxis for stroke prevention. The study investigators attempted to assess whether the presence of relative contraindications (rCIs) to anticoagulation with warfarin might contribute to this, and to assess the risks and benefits of prophylaxis in patients with rCIs. methods: Study investigators identified patients with established non-valvular AF and flutter in a claims database. Operationally defined rCIs included, in order of clinical severity: (1) prior intracranial hemorrhage;(2) gastrointestinal bleeding or esophageal varices;(3) neurological disorder;and (4) dizziness. Nonfatal events were attributed to warfarin if patients had an appropriate claim in the previous month. results: A total of 67,082 AF patients were eligible for analysis, including 50,485 (75.3%) in the prevalent cohort. Warfarin exposure during the study period was 68% in the prevalent cohort. At baseline, 50.5% of prevalent cohort patients had one or more rCIs. Patients with rCI had higher prevalence of stroke risk factors (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥ 75 years, diabetes mellitus, and prior stroke or transient ischemic attack) compared to those without rCI. Patients with rCIs often received warfarin and had lower rates of ischemic stroke than those who did not. Conclusions: These results suggest that rCIs do not account for underutilization of anticoagulant prophylaxis in AF patients. Further, the benefit/risk aspects of anticoagulation for stroke prophylaxis may be favorable for many patients with rCIs.

An Evaluation of Nearshore Sediment Data after the Deepwater Horizon Blowout

The deepwater horizon blowout led to the release of 4.9 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of mexico （GOm）. Here the paper analyzes available sediment datasets to determine whether changes in petrogenic contaminants are evident in GOm sediment following the blowout. Locations sampled by EPA （Environmental Protection Agency）, British Petroleum （BP） and NOAA （National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration） were reduced and grouped into 46 similar locations and analyzed. Eleven groups suggested an increase in PAIl （polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon） and nickel, one group showed a statistically significant increase in Phenanthrene. Four locations were analyzed for time trends and differences between initial and peak concentrations of oil range organics （OrO）, diesel range organics （DrO）, vanadium and nickel. One location had significant increases in OrO, DrO and vanadium and a suggestive increase in nickel. Correlations between OrO/DrO, OrO/V, OrO/Ni, V/Ni were computed （rE= 0.85, 0.67, 0.64, 0.92, respectively）. Overall, the analyses suggest that future monitoring should employ a sampling strategy that coordinates response sampling to previously sampled locations, such that baseline datasets can be used in detection of event associated contamination.

Aging is a key risk factor for cognitive decline and age-related neurodegenerative disorders. Also, an age-related decrease in sex steroid hormones may have a negative impact on the formation of neurofibrillary tangles （NFTs）; these hormones can regulate Tau phosphorylation and the principal kinase GSK3β involved in this process. Hormone replacement therapy decreases NFTs, but it increases the risk of some types of cancer. However, other synthetic hormones such as tibolone （TIB） have been used for hormone replacement therapy. The aim of this work was to evaluate the long-term effects of TIB （0.01 mg/kg and 1mg/kg, intragastrically for 12 weeks） on the content of total and hyperphosphorylated Tau （PHF-1） proteins and the regulation of GSK3β/Akt/PI3K pathway and CDK5/p35/p25 complexes in the hippocampus of aged male mice. We observed that the content of PHF-1 decreased with TIB administration. In contrast, no changes were observed in the active form of GSK3β or PI3K. TIB decreased the expression of the total and phosphorylated form of Akt while increased that of p110 and p85. The content of CDK5 was differentially modified with TIB： it was increased at low doses and decreased at high doses. When we analyzed the content of CDK5 activators, an increase was found on p35; however, the content of p25 decreased with administration of low dose of TIB. Our results suggest a possible mechanism of action of TIB in the hippocampus of aged male mice. Through the regulation of Tau and GSK3β/Akt/PI3K pathway, and CDK5/p35/p25 complexes, TIB may modulate neuronal plasticity and regulate learning and memory processes.

Effects of broccoli extract and various essential oils on intestinal and faecal microflora and on xenobiotic enzymes and the antioxidant system of piglets

Objective: Since the ban of antibiotics as growth promoting feed additives in the EU in 2006 research in alternatives has gained importance. Phytogenic feed additives represent a heterogenous class of different plant derived substances that are discussed to improve the health of farm animals by direct and indirect antioxidant effects and by influencing microbial eubiosis in the gastrointestinal tract. Consequently our study aimed to investigate the influence of broccoli extract and the essential oils of tur- meric, oregano, thyme and rosemary, as selected individual additives, on intestinal and faecal microflora, on xenobiotic enzymes, and on the antioxidant system of piglets. methods: 48 four weeks old male weaned piglets were assigned to 6 groups of 8. The piglets were housed individually in stainless steel pens with slatted floor. The control group (Con) was fed a diet without an additive for 4 weeks. The diet of group BE contained 0.15 g/kg sulforaphane in form of a broccoli extract. 535, 282, 373 and 476 mg/kg of the essential oils of turmeric (Cuo), oregano (Oo), thyme (To) and rosemary (ro) were added to the diets of the remaining 4 groups to stan-dardise supplementation to 150 mg/kg of the oils’ key terpene compounds ar-turmerone, carvacrol, thymol and 1,8-cineole. The composition of bacterial microflora was examined by cultivating samples of jejeunal and colonic mucosa and of faeces under specific conditions. The mrNA expression of xenobiotic and antioxidant enzymes was determined by reversing transcrip- tase real time detection PCr (rT-PCr). Total antioxidant status was assayed using the Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC), and lipid peroxidation was determined by measuring thiobarbioturic acid reactive substances (TBA- rS). results: Compared to Con piglets all additives positively influenced weight gain and feed conversion in week 1. Background and aims:Chronic exposure to chemotherapeutics can lead to severe adverse events including hepatotoxicity.A combination chemotherapy regimen of doxorubicin(DOX)and cyclophos-phamide(CPS)is employed in treatment of several cancers such as leukemia,lymphoma,and breast *** is not well understood whether a combination therapy with DOX and CPS can induce *** therefore sought to determine whether co-administration of DOX and CPS at their clini-cally relevant doses and frequency results in ***:male C57BL/6J mice received one intraperitoneal injection of saline or DOX-2 mg/kg and CPS-50 mg/kg once a week for 4 *** the treatment period,liver histology and various serum bio-markers of hepatotoxicity were ***:Co-treatment with DOX and CPS did not alter the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase(ALT),alkaline phosphatase(ALP),bilirubin,albumin,globulin,or total ***,co-administration of DOX and CPS did not result in a noticeable change in liver ***,it was notable that the concomitant treatment with DOX and CPS resulted in a significant increase in serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase(AST).Elevated serum AST levels were also associated with increased serum creatinine kinase(CK)levels,suggesting that the elevated serum AST levels are likely due to muscle injury following the co-administration of DOX and ***:Taken together,our results,for the first time,suggest that co-administration of DOX and CPS,at their clinically relevant doses and frequency does not induce a significant hepatotoxicity in the mice.

Exploring the relationship between Obstetrical Nurses’ Work and Pregnancy Outcomes

The registered Nurses Association of Ontario Healthy Work Environments Best Practice Guideline recommends that employers promote safe, healthy workplaces. Healthy workplaces include addressing the unique needs of nurses who work while pregnant. The purpose of this descriptive study, summarizing information from 120 pregnancies reported by 95 nurses, was to determine if the workload of obstetrical nurses was associated with negative pregnancy outcomes, including preterm delivery and birth weight. Full-time obstetrical nursing work is a predictor of reduced birth weight, but not of preterm birth when compared to outcomes of obstetrical nurses working part time. One third of nurses reported pregnancy complications and most nurses experienced work-related and personal stress. Further research evaluating work modifications during pregnancy is indicated to improve birth outcomes.
