Auditory Clinical Profile of Nightclub Employees in the City of Parakou in 2021

Introduction: Hearing impairments are common among nightclub workers. The present work aims to study the hearing clinical profile of these employees in the city of Parakou in 2021. methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive analytical study from march 14 to June 15, 2021. It focused on employees of 13 nightclubs in the city of Parakou. Were included in the study, employees with at least 03 months of practice and aged at least 18 to 50 years at most on the date of the survey and who had given their informed consent to participate in the study. Each employee received a questionnaire, an otoscopy and an acoumetry in tune. Noise pollution was measured at each workstation using a sound level meter. Results: A total of 114 employees were collected. The mean age was 26.38 years ± 4.81 and the sex ratio 0.87. The server position was occupied by 65 employees (57%) followed by managers, 19 or 16.70%- and 17-disc jockeys, 14.90%. Among the employees 31.60% exercised between 03 and 09 months. 76.32% were exposed to noise for more than 8 hours per day and 81.58% were exposed to noise for more than 40 hours per week. The sound level at the workstation was for 59 employees (51.75%) between 90 and 100 dB. Tinnitus was the most expressed complaint, respectively 21 (18.40%) on the right and 22 (19.30%) on the left. Rinne’s test was positive in 85.10% of employees. Weber’s test was indifferent to all frequencies in the majority of respondents. Conclusion: Hearing damage among nightclub employees in the city of Parakou is a reality. It is important to put preventive measures in place.

<i>Helicobacter pylori</i>Infection (<i>Hp</i>) among Children in the Northern Benin in 2018

Background: Hp infection is the most common chronic bacterial infection in developing countries and is contracted especially in childhood where it remains silent. Because of its involvement in the genesis of certain cancers, the WHO has classified Hp in the category of carcinogen class I. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Hp infection among children from a District in Northern Benin, and to identify the factors associated with it. Patients and methods: This scientific investigation is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study based on a prospective collection of data carried out from July to September 2018. Recruitment was probabilistic;it was based on the WHO cluster sampling technique implemented among children aged 3 to 10 years without recent history of antibiotic treatment and proton pump inhibitors. Hp infection was diagnosed during the search for bacteria antigen in the feces through a quick Elisa test which proved positive. Results: We included 250 children in the study. Among them, 151 (60.4%) had Hp infection. 79 (52.3%) out of the 151 infected children were female, i.e. a sex ratio of 0.91. mean age for those infected children was 6 ± 2.3 years. Among the 151 children infected with Hp, 98 (64.9%) were asymptomatic. Factors associated with that infection were: children’s age > 5 years (p = 0.0461), use of contaminated drinking water (p = 0.0001), meals away from home (p = 0.0039), mothers’ low educational status (p = 0.0137) and low monthly income (p = 0.0116) as well as household size > 3 (p = 0.0002). Conclusion: Hp infection is common among children aged 3 to 10 years in Northern Benin. Often asymptomatic, it is facilitated and exacerbated by unsanitary conditions and low socioeconomic status.

Epidemiological, Clinical and Etiological Aspects of Ascites in the medicine Department at the Departmental University Hospital of Borgou

Goals: The study has been initiated in order to describe the epidemiological, clinical and etiological aspect of the ascites. Patients and methods: This was a retrospective and descriptive study on the patients with an ascite and followed at the medicine department of Borgou departmental teaching hospital. Results: A total of 190 patients have presented an ascite or a hospital prevalence at 3.93%. A male predominance has been observed with a sex-ratio at 1.7. The average age was 39.7 ± 13.9 years. The reason for consultation is dominated by the increase of the abdominal volume (69.5%). The ascite fluid is macroscopically yellow citrine. The cirrhosis (28.5%) and the heart diseases (18.6%) were the most encountered causes of the ascites. Conclusion: The etiologies of ascites are various and dominated by the hepatic cirrhosis and the heart diseases.

Humic and Oxalic Acid Stimulates Grain Yield and Induces Accumulation of Plastidial Carbohydrate metabolism Enzymes in Wheat Grown under Sandy Soil Conditions

Humic and oxalic acids have the effects of promoting plant growth. We test whether they are able to positively impact wheat yield under newly reclaimed sandy soil, where water deficiency negatively influences yield. Foliar application of humic acid and oxalic acid on two wheat cultivars, Gemiza-9 and sakha-93, leads to overall better performance of the plants and increases the yield significantly, irrespective of the cultivar genetic background. However, Gemiza-9 surpassed sak- ha-93 in grain yield parameters. The highest values of grain and protein yields/ha were obtained in both cultivars, when the plants were sprayed with a combination of 17 mg/L humic acid and (300 mg/L) oxalic acid. Humic and oxalic acid showed accumulative yield-promoting effect. To understand the mechanism by which humic and oxalic acids promoted grain yield, we performed SDS-PAGE followed by mS-mS-LC analyses. We identified a unique humic acid-induced 52 kDa band in Gemiza-9. The band contained three major proteins, Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase large chain, ADP-glucose synthase and NADP-dependent glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPN). Thus humic acid increased the activity of plastid enzymes involved in photosynthesis, sucrose biosynthesis and starched accumulation to improve the overall performance of the plant.

Availability, Accessibility and Contribution of Infant Flours to the Diet of Children Aged 6-59 months in Benin

This study assesses the nutritional composition as well as the availability and affordability of infant flour found on the market and in the households of Benin. To do that assessment, a two-step cross-sectional survey based on food ethnography methods was used. A total of 61 marketplaces were visited in seven towns and rural districts as part of the availability and affordability survey, while 400 children (aged 6 to 59 months) were surveyed to track the uses of infant flours at the household level. The results obtained reveal that pre-manufactured infant flour is sold more in urban areas (Cotonou, Porto-Novo and Parakou) than in rural ones. The average infant flours price did not vary (p = 0.985) in any given year (regardless of abundance or lean periods) nor does it vary (p = 0.133) from one point of sale to another (drugstore or supermarkets). However, the average price is found to be expensive considering the purchasing power of the households surveyed. On the other hand, the amount of ingredients used in the production of the flour types found on the market complies with the recommendations of the Codex Alimentarius, unlike the homemade ones. Pre-manufactured infant flour is found to be outside of the economic reach of most households (92%) who rely heavily on the homemade ones to feed their children. In light of the above, public authorities should help improve geographic access and pricing affordability to quality infant flour for low-income households in urban and remote areas. moreover, awareness should be raised among mothers relative to the importance of complementary feeding through education on good nutrition practices.
