Improving anammox activity and reactor start-up speed by using CO_(2)/NaHCO_(3) buffer

Anammox bacteria grow slowly and can be affected by large pH *** suitable buffers could make the start-up of anammox reactors easy and *** this study,the effects of three kinds of buffers on the nitrogen removal and growth characteristics of anammox sludge were *** with CO_(2)/NaHCO_(3)buffer solution(CCBS)performed the best in nitrogen removal,while 4-(2-hydroxyerhyl)piperazine-1-ethanesulfonic acid(HEPES)and phosphate buffer solution(PBS)inhibited the anammox *** with 50 mmol/L CCBS could start up in 20 days,showing the specific anammox activity and anammox activity of 1.01±0.10 gN/(gVSS·day)and 0.83±0.06 kgN/(m^(3)·day),*** Kuenenia was the dominant anammox bacteria,with a relative abundance of 71.8%.Notably,anammox reactors could also start quickly by using 50 mmol/L CCBS under nonstrict anaerobic *** findings are meaningful for the quick start-up of engineered anammox reactors and prompt enrichment of anammox bacteria.

Recently,non-centrosymmetric(NCS)Hg-based chalcogenides have garnered significant interest due to their strong second-harmonic-generation intensities(deff),making them attractive candidates for infrared nonlinear optical(IR-NLO)***,achieving both wide band gaps(Eg)and large phasematched deffsimultaneously in these materials remains a challenge due to their inherent constraints on each *** this research,we have successfully obtained two quaternary NCS Hg-based chalcogenides,Rb2Hgge_(3)S_(8)and Cs_(2)Hgge_(3)S_(8),by implementing a bandgap engineering strategy that involves alkali metal introduction and Hg/ge ratio *** compounds consist of 2D[Hg ge_(3)S_(8)]_(2)–anionic layers made of 1D[HggeS_(6)]^(6–)chains and dimeric[ge_(2)S_(6)]_(4–)polyhedra arranged alternately,and the charge-balanced Rb+/Cs+cations located between these ***,Rb_(2)Hgge_(3)S_(8)and Cs_(2)Hgge_(3)S_(8)exhibit overall properties required for promising IR-NLO materials,including sufficient Pm deff(0.55–0.70×AggaS_(2)@20_(5)0 nm),large Eg(3.27–3.41 e V),giant laser-induced damage thresholds(17.4–19.7×AggaS_(2)@1064 nm),broad optical transmission intervals(0.32–17.5μm),and suitable theoretical birefringence(0.069–0.086@2050 nm).Furthermore,in-depth theoretical analysis reveals that the exceptional IRNLO performance is attributed to the synergy effects of distorted[HgS_(4)]and[geS_(4)]*** study provides a useful strategy for enhancing the Eg and advancing Hg-based IR-NLO materials,which is expected to extended and implemented in other chalcogenide systems.

A two-pronged strategy utilizing exosomes extracted from antigenpresenting cells to combat hepatitis B

Chronic hepatitis B(CHB)is consistently challenging to conquer with numerous complications and *** the effectiveness of antiviral therapies in suppressing hepatitis B virus(HBV)replication,there is an urgent need for novel and more effective treatment *** strategies predominantly emphasize immune activation but still face challenges in sufficiently eliciting T cell *** into account the targeted delivery of nanoparticles to the liver and spleen via intravenous injection,we have proposed a dual-pronged therapeutic strategy based on antigen-presenting cells(APCs)-derived ***,exosomes targeted to the spleen can activate specific immune responses,while those targeted to the liver can modulate or reverse the liver’s immunosuppressive *** immunization,exosome formulations exhibit the remarkable ability to effectively activate APCs,thereby triggering the proliferation of CD8^(+)T ***,they also play an immunoregulatory role by converting m2 macrophages into m1 *** two-pronged therapeutic strategy precisely addresses the issues of T cell dysfunction and immune suppression,both characteristic features of CHB *** combined with Aluminum(Alum)-adjuvanted vaccine,these exosome formulations not only demonstrate a high level of cellular immune response but also secrete specific antibodies comparable to those induced by Alum *** combined approach effectively enhances both cellular and humoral immunity,offering a promising avenue for the development of therapeutic hepatitis B vaccines based on exosome formulations.

A lightweight flexible thermally stable composite is fabricated by com-bining silica nanofiber membranes(SNm)with mXene@c-mWCNT hybrid *** flexible SNm with outstanding thermal insulation are prepared from tetraethyl orthosilicate hydrolysis and condensation by electrospinning and high-temperature calcination;the mXene@c-mWCNT_(x:y)films are prepared by vacuum filtration *** particular,the SNm and mXene@c-mWCNT_(6:4)as one unit layer(SmC_(1))are bonded together with 5 wt%polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)solution,which exhibits low thermal conductivity(0.066 W m^(-1)K^(-1))and good electromagnetic interference(EmI)shielding performance(average EmI SE_(T),37.8 dB).With the increase in func-tional unit layer,the overall thermal insulation performance of the whole composite film(SmC_(x))remains stable,and EmI shielding performance is greatly improved,especially for SmC_(3)with three unit layers,the average EmI SET is as high as 55.4 *** addition,the organic combination of rigid SNm and tough mXene@c-mWCNT_(6:4)makes SmC_(x)exhibit good mechanical tensile ***,SmC_(x)exhibit stable EmI shielding and excellent thermal insulation even in extreme heat and cold ***,this work provides a novel design idea and important reference value for EmI shielding and thermal insulation components used in extreme environmental protection equipment in the future.

Numerical investigation of sinusoidal pulsating gas intake to intensify the gas-slag momentum transfer in the top-blown smelting furnace

The variation characteristics of bubble morphology and the thermal-physical properties of bubble boundary in the top-blown smelting furnace were explored by means of the computational fluid dynamics *** essential aspects of the fluid phase(e.g.,splashing volume,dead zone of copper slag,and gas penetration depth)were explored together with the effect of sinusoidal pulsating gas intake on the momentum-transfer performance between *** results illustrated that two relatively larger vortices and two smaller vortices appear in the bubble waist and below the lance,*** expansion of larger ones as well as the shrinking of smaller ones combine to cause the contraction of the bubble *** to the results of the case with a fixed gas injection velocity(V_(g)=58 m/s),the splashing volume and dead zone volume of the slag under the V_(g)=58+10sin(2πt)condition are reduced by 24.9%and 23.5%,respectively,where t represents the instant *** penetration depth and slag motion velocity of the latter are 1.03 and 1.31 times high-er than those of the former,respectively.

Hydrochemical Characteristics and Evolution of Underground Brine in Lop Nur,Northwestern China

Lop Nur is located at the eastmost end of the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang,Northwestern *** study reviews the hydrochemical characteristics and evolution of underground brine in Lop Nur,based on analytical data from 429 water samples(mainly brine).It is found that in the NE-SW direction,from the periphery to the Luobei sub-depression,while the hydrochemical type varies from the sodium sulfate subtype(S)to the magnesium sulfate subtype(m),the corresponding brine in the phase diagram transfers from the thenardite phase(Then)area,through the bloedite phase(Blo),epsomite phase(Eps),picromerite phase(Picro),finally reaching the sylvite phase(Syl)*** for the degree of evolution,the sequence is the peripheryg glauberite brineg clastic brine *** is concluded that the oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of the brine have evidently been affected through the effects of evaporation and altitude,as well as the changes in local water circulation in recent *** and chloride isotopic compositions show that the glauberite brine is formed under more arid conditions than the clastic *** strontium isotopic composition indicates that the Lop Nur brine primarily originates from surface water;however,deep recharge may also be involved in the evolution of the brine,according to previous noble gas *** is confirmed that the brine in Lop Nur has become enriched with potassium prior to halite precipitation over the full course of the salt lake's *** on chemical compositions of brine from drillhole LDK01 and previous lithological studies,the evolution of the salt lake can be divided into three stages and it is inferred that the brine in Lop Nur may have undergone at least two significant concentration-dilution periods.

Counteracting effects on ENSO induced by ocean chlorophyll interannual variability and tropical instability wave-scale perturbations in the tropical Pacific

Large perturbations in chlorophyll(Chl)are observed to coexist at interannual and tropical instability wave(TIW)scales in the tropical Pacific;at present,their combined effects on El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)through ocean biologyinduced heating(OBH)feedbacks are not understood ***,a hybrid coupled model(HCm)for the atmosphere and ocean physics-biogeochemistry(AOPB)in the tropical Pacific is adopted to quantify how ENSO can be modulated by Chl perturbations at interannual and TIW scales,individually or collectively,*** HCm-based sensitivity experiments demonstrate a counteracting effect on ENSO:the bio-climate feedback due to large-scale Chl interannual variability acts to damp ENSO through its impact on upper-ocean stratification and vertical mixing,whereas that due to TIW-scale Chl perturbations tends to amplify *** ENSO simulations are sensitively dependent on the ways Chl effects are represented at these different scales,it is necessary to adequately take into account these related differential Chl effects in climate modeling.A bias source for ENSO simulations is illustrated that is related with the Chl effects in the tropical Pacific,adding in a new insight into interactions between the climate system and ocean ecosystem on different scales in the *** results reveal a level of complexity of ENSO modulations resulting from Chl effects at interannual and TIW scales,which are associated with ocean biogeochemical processes and their interactions with physical processes in the tropical Pacific.
