What we have learned from randomized trials of prostate cancer screening

The introduction of prostate-specific antigen （PSA） for prostate cancer screening in the late 1980s led to an epidemic of prostate cancer, particularly in developed countries. However, the first valid reports from randomized controlled trials on the efficacy of screening were not published until 2009. men in the screening group in the European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer were 20% less likely than those in the control group to die from prostate cancer. The absolute difference was only 0.7/1000, implying that over 1400 men needed to be screened to prevent one prostate cancer death. Screening was also associated with a 70% increased risk for being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The American Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial found no survival benefit for screening. Results were not conclusive because a substantial proportion of study subjects had previously undergone PSA testing, over half of the control group had PSA testing, follow-up was relatively short, and fewer than 100 subjects died from prostate cancer. Balancing the potential survival benefit from screening is the risk of overdiagnosis--finding cancers that would not otherwise cause clinical problems^and the risk of treatment complications, including urinary, sexual and bowel dysfunction. Prostate cancer screening efforts would benefit from improved biomarkers, which more readily identify clinically important cancers. Cancer control efforts might also need to include chemoprevention, though currently available agents are controversial. In the meantime, oatients need to be supoorted in achievine informed decisions on whether to be screened for orostate cancer.

First Detailed Photometric Investigation on the Nature of Contact Binary System AA Cet

The TESS light curve(LC)of the marginal contact binary A A Cet was analyzed simultaneously with the radial velocity and the orbital period(OP)change of the system was *** physical parameters of the system were obtained by analyzing the LC of A A Cet with the Wilson-Devinney method,and the absolute parameters of the components were calculated using the results *** the components of AA Cet,the masses and radii were calculated as m_(1)=1.39±0.04 m_⊙,m_(2)=0.48±0.02 m_⊙,and R_(1)=1.64±0.03 R_⊙,R_(2)=1.01±0.04 R_⊙,*** Cet is a marginal contact binary with a temperature difference of 1305 K between its components.A total of 14 eclipse times were obtained from the TESS data and used in the OP analysis together with those collected from the *** has been observed that the change in the OP of AA Cet is in the form of a decreasing *** mass transfer between the components has been interpreted as the reason for this *** OP decrease amount of A A Cet was obtained as dP/dt=0.0062±0.0006 s yr^(-1).and the reason for this decrease was attributed to a 3.3(9)×10^(-8)m_⊙.mass transfer per year from the more massive component to the less massive *** age of A A Cet has been estimated as 7 Gyr,as the age of contact systems helps us to understand their evolution.

An electron moir■ method for a common SEm

In the electron moiré method, a high-frequency grating is used to measure microscopic deformation, which promises significant potential applications for the method in the microscopic analysis of materials. However, a special beam scanning control device is required to produce a grating and generate a moiré fringe pattern for the scanning electron microscope （SEm）. Because only a few SEms used in the material science studies are equipped with this device, the use of the electron moiré method is limited. In this study, an electron moiré method for a common SEm without the beam control device is presented. A grating based on a multi-scanning concept is fabricated in any observing mode. A real-time moiré pattern can also be generated in the SEm or an optical filtering system. Without the beam control device being a prerequisite, the electron moiré method can be more widely used. The experimental results from three different types of SEms show that high quality gratings with uniform lines and less pitch error can be fabricated by this method, and moiré patterns can also be correctly generated.

Levitation and lateral forces between a point magnetic dipole and a superconducting sphere

The dipole–dipole interaction model is employed to investigate the angular dependence of the levitation and lateral forces acting on a small magnet in an anti-symmetric magnet/superconducting sphere system. Breaking the symmetry of the system enables us to study the lateral force which is important in the stability of the magnet above a superconducting sphere in the meissner state. Under the assumption that the lateral displacement of the magnet is small compared to the physical dimensions of our proposed system, analytical expressions are obtained for the levitation and lateral forces as a function of the geometrical parameters of the superconductor as well as the height, the lateral displacement, and the orientation of the magnetic moment of the magnet. The dependence of the levitation force on the height of the levitating magnet is similar to that in the symmetric magnet/superconducting sphere system within the range of proposed lateral displacements. It is found that the levitation force is linearly dependent on the lateral displacement whereas the lateral force is independent of this displacement. A sinusoidal variation of both forces as a function of the polar and azimuthal angles specifying the orientation of the magnetic moment is observed. The relationship between the stability and the orientation of the magnetic moment is discussed for different orientations.

Properties of the πh_(9/2)  νi_(13/2) band in odd-odd ^(188)Au

A new rotational band has been identified and assigned to 188Au for the first time using the 173yb(19F,4nγ) reaction at the beam energies of 86 and 90 meV. This band is proposed to be built on the πh9/2  νi13/2 configuration by comparing the band properties with known bands in neighboring nuclei. The prolate-to-oblate shape transition through triaxial shape has been proposed to occur around 188Au for the πh9/2  νi13/2 bands in odd-odd Au isotopes on the basis of total Routhian surface (TRS) calculations.

LiBH_(4) containing 18.5 wt.%H_(2) is an attractive high-capacity hydrogen storage material,however,it suffers from high operation temperature and poor ***,a novel and low-cost bifunctional additive,waxberry-like Fe_(3)O_(4) secondary nanospheres assembled from ultrafine primary Fe_(3)O_(4) nanoparticles,is synthesized,which exhibits significant destabilization and bidirectional catalyzation towards(de)hydrogenation of LiBH_(4).With an optimized addition of 30 wt.% waxberry-like Fe_(3)O_(4),the system initiated dehydrogenation below 100℃ and released a total of 8.1 wt.%H_(2) to 400℃.After 10 cycles,a capacity retention of 70% was achieved,greatly superior to previously reported oxides-modified *** destabilizing and catalyzing mechanisms of waxberry-like Fe_(3)O_(4) on LiBH_(4) were systematically analyzed by phase and microstructural evolutions during dehydrogenation and hydrogenation cycling as well as density functional theory(DFT)*** present work provides new insights in developing advanced nano-additives with unique structural and multifunctional designs towards LiBH4 hydrogen storage.

Plastic deformation behavior of mg97Zn1y2 extruded alloys

The mechanical properties of the mg97Znly2 extruded alloy containing the long-period stacking ordered phase, the so-called LPSO-phase, with a volume fraction of 24%-25%, were examined by compression tests and cyclic tension-compression deformation tests. The plastic behavior of the extruded alloys with compositions of mg99.2Zn0.2y0.6 and mg89Zn4y7 （molar fraction, %）, which were almost the same compositions of mg matrix phase and LPSO phase in mg97Zn1y2 mg/LPSO two-phase alloy, respectively, were also prepared. By comparing their mechanical properties, the strengthening mechanisms operating in the mg97Zn1 y2 extruded alloy were discussed. Existence of the LPSO-phase strongly enhanced the refinement of mg matrix grain size during extrusion, which led to a large increment of the strength of alloy. In addition, the LPSO-phases, which were aligned along the extrusion direction in mg97Zn1y2 extruded alloy, acted as hardening phases, just like reinforced fibers.

ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF RESIDUAL ImPACT PROPERTIES OF mATERIALS By ACOUSTO-ULTRASONICS——A PATTERN RECOGNITION APPROACH

This paper deals with the application of Acousto-ultrasonics,in con- junction with Pattern Recognition and Classification techniques,to the identification of residual impact properties of a class of polymeric material,namely,Polyvinylchlo- ride(PVC).PVC specimens of different low-energy repeated impact damage states are processed by Acousto-ultrasonics(AU)to retrieve AU signals in the form of dig- italized *** AU signals are grouped as distinct classes,each pertaining to a known level of repeated impact *** features of these AU signals are used to build Pattern Recognition(PR)*** classifiers are used to identify unknown damage states in other PVC specimens by classifying the re- trieved AU signals as belonging to one of the *** obtained results indicate that Acousto-ultrasonics in combination with Pattern Recognition and Classification techniques can be used for the quantitative non-destructive identification of damage states in PVC specimens of unknown low-energy repeated impact conditions.
