Cell-like-carbon-micro-spheres for robust potassium anode

Large-scale low-cost synthesis methods for potassium ion battery(PIB) anodes with long cycle life and high capacity have remained challenging. Here, inspired by the structure of a biological cell, biomimetic carbon cells(BCCs) were synthesized and used as PIB anodes. The protruding carbon nanotubes across the BCC wall mimicked the ion-transporting channels present in the cell membrane, and enhanced the rate performance of PIBs. In addition, the robust carbon shell of the BCC could protect its overall structure, and the open space inside the BCC could accommodate the volume changes caused by K+insertion, which greatly improved the stability of PIBs. For the first time, a stable solid electrolyte interphase layer is formed on the surface of amorphous carbon. Collectively, the unique structural characteristics of the BCCs resulted in PIBs that showed a high reversible capacity(302 m Ah g-1at 100 m A g-1and 248 mAh g-1at500 m A g-1), excellent cycle stability(reversible capacity of 226 m Ah g-1after 2100 cycles and a continuous running time of more than 15 months at a current density of 100 m A g-1), and an excellent rate performance(160 mAh g-1at 1 A g-1). This study represents a new strategy for boosting battery performance, and could pave the way for the next generation of battery-powered applications.

Controlling the Cassie-to-Wenzel Transition: an Easy Route towards the Realization of Tridimensional Arrays of Biological Objects

In this paper we provide evidence that the Cassie-to-Wenzel transition, despite its detrimental effects on the wetting properties of superhydrophobic surfaces, can be exploited as an effective micro-fabrication strategy to obtain highly ordered arrays of biological objects. To this purpose we fabricated a patterned surface wetted in the Cassie state, where we deposited a droplet containing genomic DNA. We observed that, when the droplet wets the surface in the Cassie state, an array of DNA filaments pinned on the top edges between pillars is formed. Conversely, when the Cassie-to-Wenzel transition occurs, DNA can be pinned at different height between pillars. These results open the way to the realization of tridimensional arrays of biological objects.

Graft survival and visual outcome after simultaneous penetrating keratoplasty and cataract extraction

AIm: To evaluate the indications, complications, and visual and graft survival outcomes in eyes that had undergone simultaneous cataract extraction and penetrating keratoplasty (PKP). ·mETHODS: We described a retrospective study of 101 patients who had undergone simultaneous cataract extraction and PKP at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2002. All patients were followed up postoperatively with maximum follow-up 68 months. ·RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 61 years. The mean overall follow -up was 27 months. The most common indications for surgery were corneal scarring (45.5% ), previous failed graft (15.8% ), corneal ulcer (12.9% ), Fuchs endothelial dystrophy (8.9% ), stromal dystrophy (2.9% ), and other conditions (14.5% ). Overall, 69 grafts (68.3% ) remained clear at final follow -up. Previous glaucoma or postoperative glaucoma had no statistically significant effects on graft outcome (P >0.05). The graft rejection rate (17.8% ) was a significant risk factor for failure (P =0.00). Age, gender, indications for surgery, corneal graft diameter, and intraoperative vitreous loss had no statistically significant effects on the PKP outcome (P >0.05). Postoperative visual acuity was significantly associated with preoperative visual acuity (P ming a combined procedure results in more rapid visual rehabilitation and good graft clarity.

Reservoir stress path and induced seismic anisotropy： results from linking coupled fluid-flow/geomechanical simulation with seismic modelling

We present a workflow linking coupled fluid-flow and geomechanical simulation with seismic modelling to predict seismic anisotropy induced by non-hydrostatic stress changes. We generate seismic models from coupled simulations to examine the relationship between reservoir geometry, stress path and seismic anisotropy. The results indicate that geometry influences the evolution of stress,which leads to stress-induced seismic anisotropy. Although stress anisotropy is high for the small reservoir, the effect of stress arching and the ability of the side-burden to support the excess load limit the overall change in effective stress and hence seismic anisotropy. For the extensive reservoir, stress anisotropy and induced seismic anisotropy are high. The extensive and elongate reservoirs experience significant compaction, where the inefficiency of the developed stress arching in the side-burden cannot support the excess *** elongate reservoir displays significant stress asymmetry,with seismic anisotropy developing predominantly along the long-edge of the reservoir. We show that the link betweenstress path parameters and seismic anisotropy is complex,where the anisotropic symmetry is controlled not only by model geometry but also the nonlinear rock physics model used. Nevertheless, a workflow has been developed to model seismic anisotropy induced by non-hydrostatic stress changes, allowing field observations of anisotropy to be linked with geomechanical models.

Surrogate measures to Assess mobility of People as a Resilience Indicator in Disaster management: An Exploratory Study in Southeastern Sri Lanka

Understanding social resilience can assist in the formulation of disaster management policies to help communities better prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. However, direct social resilience measurement methods such as household surveys are not always a practical option as they are a time-and resource-exhaustive process. Existing measures mainly utilize publicly available census data, which often provide a poor and outdated assessment of current social resilience status. Another limitation includes a failure to capture multiple facets of indicators that are process-oriented and dynamic in nature such as mobility of people. These challenges can be addressed by employing a surrogate approach. Surrogates are alternative measures to depict the target indicator. The surrogate approach can capture key facets of a target indicator, which can be used as potential measures for the target indicator. A framework to conceptualize the surrogate approach is presented, and operationalized using a case study approach on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka to identify surrogates to measure mobility of people as a resilience indicator. Six higher-order themes were identi-fied as potential surrogates to measure mobility of people in a disaster context. The approach proposed to methodically identify potential surrogates and their measurement protocols can help to improve the current knowledge base and understanding of complex interrelationships of social resilience.

Impact of Accelerated Ultraviolet Weathering on Polymeric Composite Insulators Under High Voltage DC Stress

This study investigates the weatherability of room temperature vulcanized(RTV)silicone rubber(SiR)and epoxybased material specimens with a composition of different nano and micro fillers against the collegial effects of high voltage DC,UV and temperature *** power transmission over long distances via HVDC is considered an economic option these days,so to ensure the system reliability,it is also critical to investigate these insulators under DC stress along with other environmental stresses(especially UV and temperature).For experimentation,composite samples *** epoxy(NE),epoxy with 15%micro SiO_(2)(EmS),epoxy with 5%nano SiO_(2)(ENS),neat SiR(NS),SiR with 15%micro SiO_(2)(SmS)and SiR with 5%nano SiO_(2)(SNS)are fabricated and subjected to accelerated aging in a weather chamber for 3,360 *** reveal that SmS and SNS offer better hydrophobic behavior followed by *** noticeable surface discoloration in the form of whitish shade with minor blackish spots is found in the case of SmS,while remaining samples also showed considerable color *** electron microscopy(SEm)and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR)results showed that SNS and SmS presented quite excellent resistance to the exposure of *** and weight of all specimens are evaluated throughout the experiment and particularly for the water immersion ***,leakage current analysis indicated that SNS and SmS revealed high leakage current suppression compare to other *** indicate that SNS and SmS showed enhanced resistance against UV weathering under high voltage direct current stress.

mapping rice-fallow cropland areas for short-season grain legumes intensification in South Asia using mODIS 250 m time-series data

The goal of this study was to map rainfed and irrigated rice-fallow cropland areas across South Asia,using mODIS 250 m time-series data and identify where the farming system may be intensified by the inclusion of a short-season crop during the fallow ***-fallow cropland areas are those areas where rice is grown during the kharif growing season(June–October),followed by a fallow during the rabi season(November–February).These cropland areas are not suitable for growing rabi-season rice due to their high water needs,but are suitable for a short-season(≤3 months),low water-consuming grain legumes such as chickpea(Cicer arietinum L.),black gram,green gram,and ***(double-cropping)in this manner can improve smallholder farmer’s incomes and soil health via rich nitrogen-fixation legume crops as well as address food security challenges of ballooning populations without having to expand *** grain legumes,primarily chickpea,are increasingly grown across Asia as a source of income for smallholder farmers and at the same time providing rich and cheap source of protein that can improve the nutritional quality of diets in the *** suitability of rainfed and irrigated rice-fallow croplands for grain legume cultivation across South Asia were defined by these identifiers:(a)rice crop is grown during the primary(kharif)crop growing season or during the north-west monsoon season(June–October);(b)same croplands are left fallow during the second(rabi)season or during the south-east monsoon season(November–February);and(c)ability to support low water-consuming,short-growing season(≤3 months)grain legumes(chickpea,black gram,green gram,and lentils)during rabi *** irrigated or rainfed crops such as rice or wheat that were grown during kharif were not considered suitable for growing during the rabi season,because the moisture/water demand of these crops is too *** study established cropland classes based on the every 16-day 25

3D-QSAR analysis of a new type of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors are an important class of medicinal agents used for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. A screening model of AChE inhibitor was used to evaluate the inhibition of a series of phenyl pentenone derivatives. The assay result showed that some compounds displayed higher inhibitory effects. In order to study the relationship between the bioactivities; the structures, 26 compounds with phenyl pentenone scaffold were analyzed. A 3D-QSAR model was constructed using the method of comparative molecular field analysis (ComFA). The results of cross-validated R[2]cv=0.629, non-cross-validated R[2]=0.972, SE=0.331,; F=72.41 indicate that the 3D-model possesses an ability to predict the activities of new inhibitors,; the ComFA model would be useful for the future design of new AChE inhibitors.
