Small fishes crossed a large mountain range:Quaternary stream capture events and freshwater fishes on both sides of the Taebaek mountains

The Taebaek mountains in Korea serve as the most apparent biogeographic barrier for Korean freshwater fishes,resulting in 2 distinct ichthyofaunal assemblages on the eastern(East/Japan Sea slope)and western(Yellow Sea and Korea Strait slopes)sides of the mountain *** nearly 100 species of native primary freshwater fishes in Korea,only 18 species occur naturally on both sides of the mountain ***,there are 5 rheophilic species(Phoxinus phoxinus,Coreoleuciscus splendidus,Ladislavia taczanowskii,Iksookimia koreensis and Koreocobitis rotundicaudata)found on both sides of the Taebaek mountains that are geographically restricted to the Osip River(and several neighboring rivers,for *** and ***)on the eastern side of the mountain *** Osip River and its neighboring rivers also shared a rheophilic freshwater fish,Liobagrus mediadiposalis,with the Nakdong River on the western side of the mountain *** assessed historical biogeographic hypotheses on the presence of these rheophilic fishes,utilizing DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome b *** of our divergence time estimation indicate that ichthyofaunal transfers into the Osip River(and several neighboring rivers in East Sea slope)have occurred from the Han(Yellow Sea slope)and Nakdong(Korea Strait slope)Rivers since the Late *** inferred divergence times for the ichthyofaunal transfer across the Taebaek mountains were consistent with the timing of hypothesized multiple reactivations of the Osip River Fault(Late Pleistocene),suggesting that the Osip River Fault reactivations may have caused stream capture events,followed by ichthyofaunal transfer,not only between the Osip and Nakdong Rivers,but also between the Osip and Han Rivers.

There is a need to develop interventions to slow or reverse the degeneration of dopamine neurons in Parkinson’s disease after *** that preclinical and clinical studies suggest benefits of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids,such as docosahexaenoic acid,and exercise in Parkinson’s disease,we investigated whether both could synergistically interact to induce recovery of the dopaminergic ***,mice received a unilateral stereotactic injection of 6-hydroxydopamine into the striatum to establish an animal model of nigrostriatal *** weeks after lesion,animals were fed a docosahexaenoic acid-enriched or a control diet for the next 8 *** this period,the animals had access to a running wheel,which they could use or *** acid treatment,voluntary exercise,or the combination of both had no effect on(i)distance traveled in the open field test,(ii)the percentage of contraversive rotations in the apomorphine-induction test or(iii)the number of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive cells in the substantia nigra pars ***,the docosahexaenoic acid diet increased the number of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive terminals and induced a rise in dopamine concentrations in the lesioned *** to docosahexaenoic acid treatment or exercise alone,the combination of docosahexaenoic acid and exercise(i)improved forelimb balance in the stepping test,(ii)decreased the striatal DOPAC/dopamine ratio and(iii)led to increased dopamine transporter levels in the lesioned *** present results suggest that the combination of exercise and docosahexaenoic acid may act synergistically in the striatum of mice with a unilateral lesion of the dopaminergic system and provide support for clinical trials combining nutrition and physical exercise in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Thixoforging of steels is a potential forming technology,which aims at producing near-net-shaped components with good quality from high strength steels in one forging *** thixoforging process parameters such as billet temperature,temperature distribution after reheating,argon gas pressure,transportation time and forging load were investigated on the thixoforging of non axis-symmetric parts of steel grade *** experimental and numerical study of the material flow and tool temperature load reveal the areas of intensive tool wear,thus being useful for further tool *** hot working steel X38CrmoV5-1 as a tool bulk material with protecting thin films of TiAlN/γ-Al2O3 shows good experimental results at 170 forging cycles.

A program of house dust sample collection and analysis has begun in Syracuse,New York,USA,in order to determine the feasibility of a geography-based exposure assessment for urban *** sampling program,and the protocols it employs,is described for two different types of wipe media,Ghost Wipes and Whatman *** results show that strong spatial patterns of floor dust loading(mg dust per square foot)can be observed for data aggregated at a spatial scale of about 1600 m(~2.5 km^(2)).Floor dust metal concentrations were similar to those found in other urban environments,with some regional *** median floor dust Pb concentration was~108 mg·kg^(-1)for this initial data set of~264 sampled residential locations,and varied from 50 to 1100 mg Pb·kg^(-1).

multidrug-resistant bacterial infections represent a dire threat to global *** development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria coupled with the lack of development of new antibiotics is creating infections requiring antibiotics of last resort,and even some infections for which we have no available ***-based infections present some of the most challenging targets for *** biofilm matrix provides a physical barrier that can impede access of antibiotics and antimicrobials to resident *** phenotypic diversity found in biofilms further exacerbates the difficulty of eliminating infections,with quiescent“persister”cells evading therapeutics and re-initiating infections after *** provide a tool for combatting these refractory biofilm *** distinctive size regime and physical properties of nanomaterials provide them with the capability to penetrate and disrupt *** can also access antimicrobial pathways inaccessible to conventional antimicrobials,providing a synergistic strategy for treating biofilm *** review will summarize key challenges presented by antibiotic resistance and biofilms when treating infection and provide selected examples of how nanomaterials are being used to address these challenges.

Engineering carbon quantum dots for photomediated theranostics

Carbon quantum dots （CQDs） have emerged as potential alternatives to classical metal-based semiconductor quantum dots （QDs） due to the abundance of their precursors, their ease of synthesis, high biocompatibility, low cost, and particularly their strong photoresponsiveness, tunability, and stability. Light is a versatile, tunable stimulus that can provide spatiotemporal control. Its interaction with CQDs elicits interesting responses such as wavelength-dependent optical emissions, charge/electron transfer, and heat generation, processes that are suitable for a range of photomediated bioapplications. The carbogenic core and surface characteristics of CQDs can be tuned through versatile engineering strategies to endow specific optical and physicochemical properties, while conjugation with specific moieties can enable the design of targeted probes. Fundamental approaches to tune the responses of CQDs to photo-interactions and the design of bionanoprobes are presented, which enable biomedical applications involving diagnostics and therapeutics. These strategies represent comprehensive platforms for engineering multifunctional probes for nanomedicine, and the design of QD probes with a range of metal-free and emer^in~ 2D materials.

The nudged elastic band(NEB)method is a commonly used approach for the calculation of minimum energy pathways of kinetic ***,the final paths obtained rely heavily on the nature of the initially chosen *** often necessitates running multiple calculations with differing starting points in order to obtain accurate ***,it has been shown that the NEB algorithm can only conserve or raise the distortion symmetry exhibited by an initial *** this knowledge,symmetryadapted perturbations can be generated and used as a tool to systematically lower the initial path symmetry,enabling the exploration of other low-energy pathways that may ***,the group and representation theory details behind this process are presented and implemented in a standalone piece of software(DiSPy).The method is then demonstrated by applying it to the calculation of ferroelectric switching pathways in LiNbO_(3).Previously reported pathways are more easily obtained,with new paths also being found which involve a higher degree of atomic coordination.

Post-analysis simulation of the collapse of an open sabo dam of steel pipes subjected to boulder laden debris flow

The objective of the proposed method is to utilize a site investigation of a debris flow disaster and verify a real scale analysis to evaluate the impulsive load on an open sabo *** Nagiso debris flow disaster which occurred in Nagano in 2014,where damage caused by Typhoon Neogri was *** verification result of the site investigation demonstrated the weak components of the open Sabo dam experienced damage owing to the debris flow.A discrete element method is normally applied to a solid body to calculate an interaction function force with respect to the contact point between boulders and the *** numerical method initially concatenates elements that model the open Sabo ***,the stiffness coefficient of flanges and coupling joints between pipes was expressed to utilize the sectional partition method to determine the structural *** method was improved to separate from the connecting elements beyond the boundary *** debris flow model uses a water flow distribution model,and the debris flow flowed from 200m upstream of the open sabo ***,the proposed method was examined to verify the primary cause of damage to the open sabo dam and used to reproduce the circumstances that evaluated the impulsive load occurrence mechanism in the case of a real *** addition,the coupling joints between the hollow steel pipes utilized a’reproduction analysis’ for a real sabo dam and a‘reinforced analysis’ for a reinforced sabo dam were applied to assess the weak point of the dam.
