Targeting harmful effects of non-excitatory amino acids as an alternative therapeutic strategy to reduce ischemic damage

The involvement of the excitatory amino acids glutamate and aspartate in ce rebral ischemia and excitotoxicity is ***,the role of non-excitatory amino acids in brain damage following a stroke or brain trauma remains largely *** release of amino acids by necrotic cells in the ischemic core may contribute to the expansion of the *** findings indicated that the reversible loss of field excitato ry postsynaptic potentials caused by transient hypoxia became irreversible when exposed to a mixture of just four non-excitatory amino acids(L-alanine,glycine,L-glutamine,and L-serine)at their plasma *** amino acids induce swelling in the somas of neurons and astrocytes during hypoxia,along with permanent dendritic damage mediated by N-methyl-D-aspartate *** N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors prevented neuronal damage in the presence of these amino acids during *** is likely that astroglial swelling caused by the accumulation of these amino acids via the alanine-serine-cysteine transporter 2 exchanger and system N transporters activates volume-regulated anion channels,leading to the release of excitotoxins and subsequent neuronal damage through N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor ***,previously unrecognized mechanisms involving non-excitatory amino acids may contribute to the progression and expansion of brain injury in neurological emergencies such as stroke and traumatic brain *** these pathways co uld highlight new therapeutic targets to mitigate brain injury.

Heterozygous nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-2 mutations affect monocyte maturation in Crohn's disease

AIm： To investigate the function of monocytes in Crohn＇s disease （CD） patients and to correlate this with disease- associated nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-2 （NOD2） gene variants. mETHODS： monocytes from 47 consecutively referred CD patients and 9 healthy blood donors were cultured with interleukin （IL）-4 and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor （Gm-CSF）, and stimulated with lipopolysaccharide （LPS） or muramyldipeptide （mDP）, the putative ligand of NOD2. RESULTS： We found that monocytes from CD patients differentiated in vitro to mature dendritic cells （DCs）, as determined by immunophenotype and morphology. IVOD2 genotype was assessed in all subjects, and we observed high CD86 expression on immature and LPS-stimulated DCs in IVOD2 mutated CD patients, as compared with wtlVOD2 CD patients and controls. By contrast, CD86 expression levels of DCs induced to maturity with mDP derived from IVOD2-mutated subjects were comparable to those of normal subjects. The amount of IL-12p70 in patient-cell cultures was larger than in controls aEer LPS treatment, but not aEer treatment with mDR CONCLUSION： Our results suggest that DCs obtained from patients with mutations in the IVOD2 gene display an activated phenotype characterized by high CD86 expression, but have a diminished response to mDP when compared to the terminal differentiation phase. We speculate that the altered differentiation of monocytes might lead to an imbalance between inflammation and the killing ability of monocytes, and may be relevant to the pathogenesis of CD.

This study examines the use of an aggregation-induced enhanced emission fluorophore(TPE-mRh)to prepare red-emitting luminescent solar concentrators(LSCs)based on poly(methyl methacrylate)(PmmA)and poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate)(PCmA).TPE-mRh is a tetraphenylethylene(TPE)derivative bearing two dimethylamino push groups and a 3-methyl-rhodanine pull moiety,with absorption maxima at around 500 nm and fluorescence peak at 700 nm that strongly increases in ***-mRh displays a typical crystallizationinduced enhanced emission that has been rationalized by modeling the compound behavior in solution and solid-state via density functional theory calculations with the inclusion of the ***-mRh dispersed into 5×5 cm2 polymer films with a thickness of 25±5μm has revealed a partial fluorescence quenching with fluorophore *** yields(QYs)below 10%for the 2 wt.%of doping have been addressed to the formation of less emissive micro-sized clusters of *** slabs with the same surface size but 3 mm of thickness and 200 ppm of TPE-mRh have provided QY of 36.5%thanks to the attenuation of the detrimental effects of fluorophore *** feature is reflected in the LSCs performance,with devices achieving the largest power collected by the photovoltaic cell.

Infuence of Process Parameters on the RF Sputtered GaP Thin Films

In this work, gallium phosphide thin films were deposited on glass substrates by radio frequency （RF） magnetron sputtering technique under different depositions conditions. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed a diversity of states： from amorphous in the films deposited at 175 ~C to a nearly stoichiometric and polycrystalline films, exhibiting cubic phase with preferred orientation along （220）, in the films deposited at temperatures higher than 250 ~C. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that all films were uniform with a smooth surface, while the energy-dispersive spectroscopy （EDS） analysis showed that there was a visible dependence on the Ga/P ratio in the deposition conditions and confirmed that a residual Ga metallic phase was presented in the surface of all the films. The Raman analysis showed the structural evolution of the GaP films was strongly dependent on the deposition conditions. The conductivity of the films was slightly dependent on the argon pressure and the rf power, but strongly dependent on the deposition temperature, mainly above 200 ~C. The optical transmission and absorption analyses of the GaP films revealed an indirect band gap of ~ 1.70 eV in the films deposited at temperatures less than 200 ~C, which transited to a band gap of 2.26 eV as the deposition temperature was close to 300 ~C.

Background:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most common cause of cancer-related death in Saudi *** study aimed to investigate the patterns of HCC and the effect of TNm staging,Alfa-fetoprotein(AFP),and Child-Turcotte Pugh(CTP)on patients’overall survival(OS).methods:A retrospective analysis was conducted on 43 HCC patients at a single oncology center in Saudi Arabia from 2015 to *** patients had to fulfill one of the following criteria:(a)a liver lesion reported as definitive HCC on dynamic imaging and/or(b)a biopsy-confirmed ***:The mean patient age of all HCC cases was 66.8 with a male-to-female ratio of 3.3:*** patients were stratified into two groups:viral HCC(n=22,51%)and non-viral HCC(n=21,49%).Among viral-HCC patients,55%were due to HBV and 45%due to *** was diagnosed in 79%of *** and sex did not significantly statistically differ in OS among viral and non-viral HCC patients(p-value>0.05).About 65%of patients had tumor size>5 cm during the diagnosis,with a significant statistical difference in OS(p-value=0.027).AFP was>400 ng/ml in 45%of the *** was a statistically significant difference in the OS in terms of AFP levels(p-value=0.021).A statistically significant difference was also observed between the CTP score and OS(p-value=0.02).CTP class B had the longest *** was the most common treatment provided to HCC patients followed by sorafenib *** was a significant statistical difference in OS among viral and non-viral HCC patients(p-value=0.008).Conclusions:The most common predictors for OS were the underlying cause of HCC,AFP,and tumor *** having non-viral etiology,a tumor size>5 cm,an AFP>400 ng/mL,and a CTP score class C were all negatively associated with OS.

Contribution of point defects and nano-grains to thermal transport behaviours of oxide-based thermoelectrics

Point defects and nano-grains are very effective ways to control the thermal conductivity in oxide-based *** we use the optimised Debye–Callaway model to understand how the effect of point defects and nano-grains to reduce the thermal conductivity by inducing normal process and oxygen vacancy in oxide-based *** results reveal that this model can be effective to fit the experimental data of thermal conductivity in ZnO-,CamnO_(3)-,BiCuSeO-,SrTiO_(3)^(-)and In_(2)O_(3)-based systems,which indicate that the normal scattering process and the oxygen vacancy will make obvious contribution to the thermal conductivity as compared with alloy compounds *** calculations also propose that it could be desirable to obtain higher ZT by controlling the concentration of oxygen vacancy in the nano-grained thermoelectric oxides.

The Geodynamics-Earth-Tides-meeting-2016 was held in the Karst, the origin of geologic karst- formation. Surface-rivers are absent, and water flows in channels over distances of 30 km, forming subsurface caves. Geodetic observations allow detecting caves and sense hydrologic flow. The Karst water had been recognized before Romans as provision for man and livestock. Proto-historic remains near the mouth of the underground river suggest the water outpouring from the Karst was associated with deities to be worshiped. Here the geodetic and cultural aspects of the Karst are summarized, illustrating the field trip that had been offered to the participants.

Tracking the Ti^(4+)substitution in phlogopite by spectroscopic imaging:A tool for unravelling the growth of micas at HP-HT conditions

Phlogopite solid-solutions have a wide pressure-temperature(P-T)stability field and are ubiquitous in a wide variety of geological settings,from deep lithosphere magmatic environments to upper crust metamorphic *** composition represents therefore a valuable physical-chemical archive and may provide important information regarding its crystallization and the petrogenesis of the *** this paper we examine the phlogopite phenocrysts from the well-known Fort Regent mica-bearing lamprophyre minette from ***(Island of Jersey,UK).Phlogopite phenocrystals from lamprophyres generally show normal-step and continuous compositional zoning,however those from the Fort Regent minette show a peculiar texture characterized by dark brown high-Ti(average TiO_(2)≈8.5 wt.%)cores enveloped by euhedral low-to mid-amplitude zonation due to oscillatory contents in Ti,Fe and ***-barometry modelling based on biotite-only composition yields relatively high P-T estimates(T≈970±54℃at P≈0.73±0.13 GPa)for cores whereas lower values(T≈790±54℃at P≈0.29±0.13 GPa)are obtained for the outer *** temperatures(T≈1075±54℃)but extremely high and anomalous pressure values(P≈1.82±0.13 GPa)are obtained for the yellowish inner *** combination of electron micro probe(EmP)analysis and single-crystal infra-red(FTIR)imaging in the OH-stretching region shows that the exceptional and oscillatory Ti contents are due to the Ti-vacancy substitution,typical of crystallization and growth processes of HP/HT *** imaging provides additional insight for this process,confirming the dominant dioctahedral nature for the Ti-Fe-rich cores and outer *** of thermobaric estimates obtained from the phlogopite compositiononly model,based on the fine-scale compositional evolution,shows that pressure-temperature values from low-Ti high-mg domains should be carefully evaluated because the substitution mechanisms during the dark mica growth are not univocal
