Sustainable land management practices, off-farm work participation and vulnerability among farmers in Ghana: Is there a nexus?

Addressing issues of agricultural sustainability and vulnerability to poverty under climate change are major challenges to development in the 21st *** for the trade-off and synergies between off-farm work participation and sustainable land management on one hand,and vulnerability to poverty on the other hand,will therefore be useful to *** this study,we use recent farm household data from Ghana to examine the effect of off-farm work participation on intensity of adoption of sustainable land management (SLm) practices and impact of off-farm work participation on vulnerability to *** employed a bivariate Tobit model to examine the determinants of SLm adoption intensity,and endogenous switching probit model to assess the impact of off-farm work participation on vulnerability to *** results reveal that participation in off-farm is positively and significantly associated with adoption intensity of bunds,and organic *** results also show that off-farm work participation significantly reduces household vulnerability to poverty by 13%.Based on these findings,we conclude that rural development through non-farm work opportunities can lead to positive synergies between sustainable agricultural production,off-farm employment and poverty alleviation.

As the Internet of things(IoT)technology is evolving,distributed solar energy resources can be operated,monitored,and controlled *** design of an IoT based solar energy system for smart irrigation is essential for regions around the world,which face water scarcity and power ***,such a system is designed in this *** proposed system utilizes a single board system-on-a-chip controller(the controller hereafter),which has built-in WiFi connectivity,and connections to a solar cell to provide the required operating *** controller reads the field soil moisture,humidity,and temperature sensors,and outputs appropriate actuation command signals to operate irrigation *** controller also monitors the underground water level,which is essential to prevent the pump motors from burning due to the level in the water *** proposed system has three modes of operations,*** local control mode,mobile monitoring-control mode,and fuzzy logic-based control *** the purpose of the proposed system validation,a prototype was designed,built,and tested.

The benefits of regular physical activity are well ***,few studies have examined the effectiveness of integrating physical activity(PA)into curricula within a post-secondary *** investigate the incorporation of PA into medical curriculum,we developed a series of optional exercise-based review sessions designed to reinforce musculoskeletal(mSK)anatomy course *** synchronous sessions were co-taught by a group fitness instructor and an anatomy *** fitness instructor would lead students through both strength and yoga style exercises,while the anatomy instructor asked questions about relevant anatomical structures related to course material previously *** the sessions,participants were asked to evaluate the classes on their self-reported exam preparedness in improving mSK anatomy knowledge,PA levels,and mental *** participants completed surveys;a majority agreed that the classes increased understanding of mSK concepts(90.0%)and activity levels(97.7%).many(70.0%)felt that the classes helped reduce *** majority of respondents(90.0%)agreed that the classes contributed to increased feelings of social ***,medical students saw benefit in PA based interventions to supplement mSK course *** with increasing activity levels and promoting health behaviours,integrating PA into medical curriculum may improve comprehension of learning material,alleviate stress and foster social connectivity among medical students.

In engineering practice,it is often necessary to determine functional relationships between dependent and independent *** relationships can be highly nonlinear,and classical regression approaches cannot always provide sufficiently reliable ***,machine Learning(mL)techniques,which offer advanced regression tools to address complicated engineering issues,have been developed and widely *** study investigates the selected mL techniques to evaluate their suitability for application in the hot deformation behavior of metallic *** mL-based regression methods of Artificial Neural Networks(ANNs),Support Vector machine(SVm),Decision Tree regression(DTr),and Gaussian Process regression(GPr)are applied to mathematically describe hot flow stress curve datasets acquired experimentally for a medium-carbon *** the GPr method has not been used for such a regression task before,the results showed that its performance is the most favorable and practically unrivaled;neither the ANN method nor the other studied mL techniques provide such precise results of the solved regression analysis.

Objective: To induce callus from the medicinally valuable species, Barringtonia racemosa L.(B. racemosa) whereby the formation of callus is essential for micropropagation studies and in vitro plant secondary metabolites ***: The callus induction potential in B. racemosa was assessed from endosperm explant cultured on different culture media and plant hormonal treatments. Lloyd and mc Cown's woody plant medium and murashige and Skoog's medium were used in the study as culture media. On the other hand, various concentrations and combinations of2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(1.0–2.0 mg/L) and kinetin(0.5–2.5 mg/L) had been incorporated in the culture media to exert the effects of auxin and cytokinin on callus ***: From the present study, it was found that the profuse [(1.681 ± 0.770) g fresh weight,(0.239 ± 0.239) g dry weight] and friable callus formation was optimally produced with desirable morphology and considerable percentage of callus induction(56.70%) in endosperm explants cultured on 1.0 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 1.5 mg/L kinetin in murashige and Skoog's ***: A reliable protocol for inducing callus formation of profuse and friable morphology in endosperm explant of B. racemosa had therefore been successfully established.

This study examines the nonlinear behaviors of a clamped-clamped porous pipe made of a functionally graded material(FGm) that conveys fluids and is equipped with a retaining clip, focusing on primary resonance and subcritical dynamics. The nonlinear governing equations for the FGm pipe are derived by the extended Hamilton's principle, and subsequently discretized through the application of the Galerkin *** direct method of multi-scales is then used to solve the derived equations. A thorough analysis of various parameters, including the clip stiffness, the power-law index, the porosity, and the clip location, is conducted to gain a comprehensive understanding of the system's nonlinear dynamics. Through the analysis of the first natural frequency, the study highlights the influence of the flow velocity and the clip stiffness, while the comparisons with metallic pipes emphasize the role of FGm composition. The examination of the forced response curves reveals saddle-node bifurcations and their dependence on parameters such as the detuning parameter and the power-law index, offering valuable insights into the system's nonlinear resonant behavior. Furthermore, the frequency-response curves illustrate the hardening nonlinearities influenced by factors such as the porosity and the clip stiffness, revealing nuanced effects on the system response and resonance characteristics. This comprehensive analysis enhances the understanding of nonlinear behaviors in FGm porous pipes with a retaining clip, providing key insights for practical engineering applications in system design and optimization.
