In-situ construction of grass-like hybrid architecture responsible for extraordinary corrosion performance: Experimental and theoretical approach

Despite the engineering potential by the co-existence of inorganic and organic substances to protect vulnerable metallic materials from corrosive environments,both their interaction and in-situ formation mechanism to induce the nature-inspired composite remained less understood.The present work used three distinctive mercaptobenzazole(mB)compounds working as corrosion inhibitors,such as 2-mercaptobenzoxazole(mBO),2-mercaptobenzothiazole(mBT),and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole(mBI)in a bid to understand how the geometrical structure arising from O,S,and N atoms affected the interaction toward inorganic layer.mB compounds that were used here to control the corrosion kinetics would be interacted readily with the pre-existing mgO layer fabricated by plasma electrolysis.This phenomenon triggered the nucleation of the root network since mB compounds were seen to be adsorbed actively on the defective surface through the active sites in mB compound.Then,the molecule with twin donor atoms adjacent to the mercapto-sites affected the facile growth of the grass-like structures with‘uniform’distribution via molecular self-assembly,which showed better corrosion performance than those with having dissimilar donor atoms with the inhibition efficiency(η)of 97%approximately.The formation mechanism underlying nucleation and growth behavior of mB molecule was discussed concerning the theoretical calculation of density functional theory.

Development of anti-corrosive coating on AZ31 mg alloy subjected to plasma electrolytic oxidation at sub-zero temperature

plasma electrolytic oxidation(pEO)is a promising surface treatment to generate adherent and thick anti-corrosive coating on light-weight metals(Al,mg,Ti,etc.)using an eco-friendly alkaline electrolyte.High energy plasma,however,inevitably generates porous structures that limit their practical performance.The present study proposes a straight-forward simple method by utilizing sub-zero electrolyte(268 K)to alter the plasma characteristics during formation of the protective coating on AZ31 mg alloy via pEO with a comparison to the electrolyte at room temperature(298 K).In refrigerated electrolyte,the formation of micro-defects is suppressed relatively at the expense of low coating growth,which is measured to be twice lower than that at 298 K due to the temperature-dependent soft plasma discharges contributing to the development of the present coating.As a consequence,corrosion resistance of the sample processed at 268 K is superior to that of 298K,implying that the effect of coating thickness is less dominant than that of compactness.This phenomenon is interpreted in relation to the ionic movement and oxide solidification controlled by soft plasma discharges arising from the temperature gradient between electrolyte and surface of the substrate during pEO.

BACKGROUND Obesity has become a serious public health issue,significantly elevating the risk of various complications.It is a well-established contributor to Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction(HFpEF).Evaluating HFpEF in obesity is crucial.Epicardial adipose tissue(EAT)has emerged as a valuable tool for validating prognostic biomarkers and guiding treatment targets.Hence,assessing EAT is of paramount importance.Cardiovascular magnetic resonance(CmR)imaging is acknowledged as the gold standard for analyzing cardiac function and mor-phology.We hope to use CmR to assess EAT as a bioimaging marker to evaluate HFpEF in obese patients.AIm To assess the diagnostic utility of CmR for evaluating heart failure with preserved ejection fraction[HFpEF;left ventricular(LV)ejection fraction≥50%]by measuring the epicardial adipose tissue(EAT)volumes and EAT mass in obese patients.mETHODS Sixty-two obese patients were divided into two groups for a case-control study based on whether or not they had heart failure with HFpEF.The two groups were defined as HFpEF+and HFpEF-.LV geometry,global systolic function,EAT volumes and EAT mass of all subjects were obtained using cine magnetic resonance sequences.RESULTS Forty-five patients of HFpEF-group and seventeen patients of HFpEF+group were included.LV mass index(g/m2)of HFpEF+group was higher than HFpEF-group(ppEF+group,EAT volumes,EAT volume index,EAT mass,EAT mass index and the ratio of EAT/[left atrial(LA)left-right(LR)diameter]were higher compared to HFpEF-group(pmultivariate analysis,Higher EAT/LA LR diameter ratio was associated with higher odds ratio of HFpEF.CONCLUSION EAT/LA LR diameter ratio is highly associated with HFpEF in obese patients.It is plausible that there may be utility in CmR for assessing obese patients for HFpEF using EAT/LA LR diameter ratio as a diagnostic biomarker.Further prospective studies,are needed to validate these proof-of-concept findings.

Aflatoxin B_(1)(AFB_(1))is a naturally-occurring mycotoxin and recognized as the most toxic foodborne toxin,particularly causing damages to kidney.Glomerular podocytes are terminally differentiated epithelial cells.AFB_(1)induces podocyte inflammation,proteinuria and renal dysfunction.Studying the mechanism of AFB_(1)-induced podocyte inflammation and murine kidney dysfunction,we detected that AFB_(1)increased ubiquitindependent degradation of the transcription factor RelA through enhanced interaction of RelA with E3 ubiquitin ligase tripartite motif containing 7(TRIm7)in mouse podocyte clone-5(mpC-5)and mouse glomeruli.Reduction of RelA resulted in decreasing microRNA-9(miR-9)and activating the chemokine receptor 4(CXCR4),thioredoxin interacting protein(TXNIp),and NOD-like receptor pyrin domain-containing 3(NLRp3)signaling axis(CXCR4/TXNIp/NLRp3 pathway),leading to podocyte inflammation.We also determined that downregulation of miR-9 led to CXCR4 expression and the downstream TXNIp/NLRp3 pathway activation.Overexpression of miR-9 or deletion of CXCR4 suppressed AFB_(1)-induced CXCR4/TXNIp/NLRp3 pathway,resulting in alleviating podocyte inflammation and kidney dysfunction.Our findings indicated that ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis of RelA,downregulation of miR-9,and activation of CXCR4/TXNIp/NLRp3 pathway played an essential role in AFB_(1)-induced glomerular podocyte inflammation.Our study revealed a novel mechanism,via RelA,for the control of AFB_(1)’s nephrotoxicity,leading to an effective protection of food safety and public health.

This work investigates the steam condensation phenomena in an air-cooled condenser.The considered horizontal flattened tube has a 30 mm hydraulic diameter,and its length is a function of the steam quality with a limit value between 0.95 and 0.05.The mass flow rate ranges from 4 to 40 kg/m^(2).s with a saturated temperature spanning an interval from 40°C to 80°C.A special approach has been implemented using the Engineering Equation Solver(EES)to solve a series of equations for the two-phase flow pattern and the related heat transfer coefficients.A wavy-stratified structure of the two-phase flow has been found when the mass rate was between 4 and 24 kg/m^(2).s.In contrast,an initially annular flow is gradually converted into a wavy stratified flow(due to the condensation process taking place inside the flattened tube)when the considered range ranges from 32 to 40 kg/m^(2).s.

Annual and seasonal changes of the air temperature with altitude in the Upper Dades valley, High Atlas, morocco

The purpose of this study is to determine the size of air temperature changes with altitude in the mountains of the arid zone, on the example of the Upper Dades valley(High Atlas, morocco). The air temperature change with altitude was determined on the basis of 5 years data from three meteorological stations. The analysis was carried out on an annual and seasonal basis. The annual and daily variations of thermal gradients between pairs of stations were also determined. It was found that the average thermal gradient in the Upper Dades valley was-1.02℃ per 100 m. The highest values of the thermal gradient occur in winter and the lowest in summer. In winter,the thermal gradient was characterized by the greatest variability. minima of the daily variation of air temperature gradients were observed in early morning hours and maxima around midday. In the lower part of the valley, air temperature inversion frequently developed between 10 Am and 3 pm UTC.The obtained results show high thermal gradients in the mountains of the arid zone, with their annual amplitude increasing in the lower parts of the valley.The instantaneous values of the gradients were significantly modified by the supply of latent heat and the occurrence of dust storms. It has been shown that the advection factor plays an important role in shaping large gradient values. The study contains novel results of thermal gradient measurements in high mountains of arid zone.

Effects of sun compass error on spatial search by Clark’s nutcrackers

Animals employ compasses during navigation,but little attention has been paid to how accuracy is maintained in the face of compass error,which is inevitable in biological systems.The use of multiple landmarks may minimize the effect of compass error.We allowed Clark’s nutcrackers to cache seeds in an outdoor aviary with either one or four landmarks present,and subsequently subjected them to small clock-shifts mimicking the effects of compass error.As predicted,the results showed a significant decrease in search accuracy following the clock-shift when one landmark was present but not when four landmarks were present.These results support that nutcrackers encode information from the sun as well as terrestrial landmarks,and these spatial cues are used in a flexible manner.Overall,our results are important as they support the hypothesis that multiple landmarks may be used during situations where the sun compass has even a small amount of error.

First Cases of Amygdaloid Cyst in Adults in Djibouti: Case Report of Two patients

Amygdaloid cysts are rare cystic benign tumors due to congenital malformations resulting from an anomaly of embryonic development of the upper laterocervical region, originating from the second branchial cleft. They represent approximately 2% of all laterocervical tumors and 6% to 85% of anomalies of the second branchial cleft. This anomaly of the second branchial cleft is a frequent reason for consultation in the pediatric population but is relatively rare in adults. We report the cases of two patients aged 23 and 34 years with no particular pathological history. They were presenting a laterocervical swelling, one right and the other left, painless, evolving for two years for the first and for 10 years for the second, gradually increasing in volume without any other associated signs the diagnosis of which after radiological exploration (ultrasound and CT scan) was that of an amygdaloid cyst. A cervicotomy with anatomopathological examination of the surgical specimen confirmed the diagnosis of the amygdaloid cyst. The objective is to analyze the anatomo-clinical and therapeutic particularities of this pathology and to compare it with data from the literature.

Beyond direct neighbourhood effects: higher-order interactions improve modelling and predicting tree survival and growth

It is known that biotic interactions are the key to species coexistence and maintenance of species diversity.Traditional studies focus overwhelmingly on pairwise interactions between organisms, ignoring complex higher-order interactions(HOIs). In this study, we present a novel method of calculating individual-level HOIs for trees, and use this method to test the importance of size-and distance-dependent individual-level HOIs to tree performance in a 25-ha temperate forest dynamic plot. We found that full HOI-inclusive models improved our ability to model and predict the survival and growth of trees, providing empirical evidence that HOIs strongly influence tree performance in this temperate forest. Specifically, assessed HOIs mitigate the competitive direct effects of neighbours on survival and growth of focal trees. Our study lays a foundation for future investigations of the prevalence and relative importance of HOIs in global forests and their impact on species diversity.

Nitrification inhibitors are widely used in agriculture to mitigate nitrous oxide(N_(2)O)emission and increase crop yield.However,no concrete information on their mitigation of N_(2)O emission is available under soil and environmental conditions as in pakistan.A field experiment was established using a silt clay loam soil from peshawar,pakistan,to study the effect of urea applied in combination with a nitrification inhibitor,nitrapyrin(2-chloro-6-tri-chloromethyl pyridine),and/or a plant growth regulator,gibberellic acid(GA_3),on N_(2)O emission and the nitrogen(N)uptake efficiency of maize.The experimental design was a randomized complete block with five treatments in four replicates:control with no N(CK),urea(200 kg N ha^(-1))alone,urea in combination with nitrapyrin(700 g ha^(-1)),urea in combination with GA_3(60 g ha^(-1)),and urea in combination with nitrapyrin and GA_3.The N_(2)O emission,yield,N response efficiency,and total N uptake were measured during the experimental period.The treatment with urea and nitrapyrin reduced total N_(2)O emission by 39%–43%and decreased yield-scaled N_(2)O emission by 47%–52%,relative to the treatment with urea alone.The maize plant biomass,grain yield,and total N uptake increased significantly by 23%,17%,and 15%,respectively,in the treatment with urea and nitrapyrin,relative to the treatment with urea alone,which was possibly due to N saving,lower N loss,and increased N uptake in the form of ammonium;they were further enhanced in the treatment with urea,nitrapyrin,and GA_3 by 27%,36%,and 25%,respectively,probably because of the stimulating effect of GA_3 on plant growth and development and the reduction in biotic and abiotic stresses.These results suggest that applying urea in combination with nitrapyrin and GA_3 has the potential to mitigate N_(2)O emission,improve N response efficiency,and increase maize yield.
