Wind-tunnel study on the improvement of aerodynamic stability of simplified suspension-bridge girder structures was conducted with using a 1/40-scaled section model. Objective of the study is the development of an economically superior suspension bridge with 500-1,000 m center span length. The wind-tunnel test showed that an edge-girder type cross section exhibited large amplitude torsional vortex-induced vibration as well as torsional flutter at a low wind speed. Accordingly, aerodynamic countermeasures of open grating deck and triangular fating, and structural countermeasures of center stay, diagonal bracing and mass increase were tried to improve the aerodynamic stability. Finally, feasibility of the best combination to a full-scale bridge was examined by structural analysis.

BACKGROUND:In Asian population, there is limited infor mation on the relevance between obesity and poor outcomes in acute pancreatitis(AP). The objective of this study was to examine the clinical impact of obesity based on body mass index(BmI) on prognosis of AP in Japanese ***:A total of 116 patients with AP were enrolled in this study. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine relations between BmI and patients’ outcomes. Additionally, to investigate whether including obesity as a prognostic factor improved the predic tive accuracy of a Japanese prognostic factor score(PF score)a receiver-operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis of mortality was ***:multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that BmI ≥25 kg/m2was associated with a significant higher mor tality [odds ratio(OR)=15.8; 95% confidence interval(CI):1.1-227; P=0.043]. The area under the ROC curve(AUC) for the combination of PF score and BmI ≥25 kg/m2(AUC=0.881;95% CI:0.809-0.952) was higher than that for the PF score alone(AUC=0.820; 95% CI:0.713-0.927)(P=0.034).CONCLUSIONS:The negative impact of a high BmI on the prognosis of AP was confirmed in a Japanese population Including BmI ≥25 kg/m2 as an additional parameter to PF score enhanced the predictive value of the PF score for AP-related mortality.

Exosomes are nanoparticles of endocytic origin, secreted by a myriad of cell populations that are attracting increased attention by virtue of their ability to modulate cell-to-cell communications. They are also attracting attention in a variety of immunological issues, including autoimmunity and, in particular, their ability to regulate cytokine and chemokine activation. Primary biliary cirrhosis （PBC） is considered a model autoimmune disease, which has a highly focused cytotoxic response against biliary epithelial cells. We have isolated exosomes from plasma from 29 patients with PBC and 30 healthy controls （HCs）, and studied the effect of these exosomes on co-stimulatory molecule expression and cytokine production in mononuclear cell populations using an ex vivo system. We also identified the microRNA （miRNA） populations in PBC compared to HC exosomes. We report herein that although exosomes do not change cytokine production, they do significantly alter co-stimulatory molecule expression on antigen-presenting populations. Further, we demonstrated that CD86 up-regulated expression on CD14＋ monocytes, whereas CD40 up-regulated on CD11c＋ dendritic cells by exosomes from patients with PBC. In addition, there were differences of miRNA expression of circulating exosomes in patients with PBC. These data have significant importance based on observations that co-stimulatory molecules play a differential role in the regulation of T-cell activation. Our observation indicated that aberrant exosomes from PBC selectively induce expression of co-stimulatory molecules in different subset of antigen-presenting cells. These alterations may involve in pathogenesis of autoimmune liver disease.

Alternaria leaf spot is a severe disease of Brassica world wide No resistant cultivars have been found in cultivated 8. rapa till now. In this study we tried to find out resistance in B. rapa cultivars. Two hundred and seventy two B. rapa (***) of vegetable including two oil seed cultivars (B. napus and B. juncea) were screened for resistance to dark leaf spot using two isolates of A brassicicola with two different screening methods in two different seasons. Different level of resistance and susceptibility were found among the cultivars used of which 22 were found to be resistant in winter and 3 were in spring season Seasonal variation was significantly different among the cultivars tested. There were no differences between the two isolates according to their morphological characteristics and host reaction Two different screening methods used in this study were also significantly correlated. This investigation represents the first vast screening of B. rapa against A brassicicola. The source of resistance would be of interest in breeding programmes for their resistance.

Background. mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (mALT) lymphoma involving multi ple organs is not well characterized. methods. To obtain a better understanding of gastric mALT lymphoma with multiple organ involvement, we compared Helicobact er pylori infection status; response to eradication therapy; prevalence of genet ic abnormality, including t(11;18)-(q2l;q2l); and clonality of tumor cells betw een patients with gastric mALT lymphoma with and without multiple organ involvem ent. Results. Of 54 patients with only gastric involvement, 51 were positive for H. pylori (94.4%), whereas only 3 of 9 patients with multiple organ involvemen t had the infection (33.3%). Among those who received eradication therapy, the remission rate in patients with only gastric involvement was significantly highe r than that in patients with multiple organ involvement (71.4%vs 33.3%; P mALT1 fusion transcripts was significantly great er in patients with multiple lesions with either single or multiple organ involv ement than in those with a single gastric lesion (71.4%vs 12.5%; P multiple gastric lesions had the fusion transcripts. Of 5 patients with multiple organ involvement tested for clonality of the CDR3 regio n, distinct clones were detected in lymphoma lesions in different organs in 3 pa tients, whereas the identical clone was present in the different lesions in the remaining 2 patients. Conclusions. Gastric mALT lymphoma with multiple organ inv olvement is often associated with API2-mALT1 fusion transcripts. moreover, H. p ylori infection is rare in patients with multiple organ involvement as compared to those with only gastric involvement. Patients with gastric mALT lymphoma with multiple organ involvement who are positive for H. pylori are resistant to erad ication therapy.

multiwalled carbon nanotubes ( mWNTs) were prepared by DCarc dischargein hydrogen gas, and werethermally purified byinfrared radiation in air. The morphology of pristineand purified mWNTs was observed by scanning electron microscope ( SEm) , and the crys tallinestructureand perfection wereinvestigated by high resolution transmission electron mi croscope( HRTEm) and Raman spectrometer. Itcameto the conclusion thatthese mWNTs possessed a high degreeof graphitization and very narrow centralchannel(about1 0 nm indiameter) , giving risetotheappearanceof breathing modesfor mWNTs.

ASET, Association of Super-advanced Electronics Technologies, has been taking the initiative in developing EUV lithography technology in Japan for the past three years. The aspherical mirror metrology using a visible light point diffraction interferometer (PDI), the wave front measurement using an at-wavelength PDI, and an at wavelength reflectometry for multilayers, various imaging simulations, multilayer coatings for the mask, the development of absorber materials for mask patterning, the mask substrate cleaning technique, and various photoresist processes have been developed. The visible light PDI employs a 0.5-μm pinhole as an aperture to generate an ideal spherical wave front and can measure a 0.3-N A mirror maximum. The at-wavelength PDI can measure the wave front error of the projection optics. The at-wavelength reflectometer can measure the reflectivity of multilayers and the round-robin test is taking place among ASET, the ALS in Lawrence Berkeley, and BESSY in Germany. The mask cleaning technique employs a supersonic hydro-cleaning technique. We have confirmed that the single layer resists can be used for EUV lithography.
