Predicting effects of tunnel throttling of annular freeway vehicular flow by a continuum model

Fluid flow throttling is common in industrial and building services *** tunnel throttling of vehicular flow is caused by the abrupt number reduction of roadway lane,as the tunnel has a lower lane number than in the roadway normal *** predict the effects of tunnel throttling of annular freeway vehicular flow,a three-lane continuum model is ***Ⅲof the tunnel is completely blocked due to the need of tunnel rehabilitation,*** exists mandatory net lane-changing rate from laneⅢto laneⅡjust upstream of the tunnel entrance,which is described by a model of random number generated through a golden section *** net-changing rate between adjacent lanes is modeled using a lane-changing time expressed explicitly in algebraic *** paper assumes that the annular freeway has a total length of 100 km,a two-lane tunnel of length 2 km with a speed limit of 80 km/*** free flow speeds on lanesⅠ,ⅡandⅢare assumed to be 110,100 and 90 km/h *** on the three-lane continuum model,numerical simulations of vehicular flows on the annular freeway with such a tunnel are conducted with a reliable numerical method of 3rd-order *** results reveal that the vehicular flow has a smaller threshold of traffic jam formation in comparison with the case without tunnel *** fuel consumption can be estimated by interpolation with time averaged grid traffic speed and an assumed curve of vehicle *** vehicle fuel consumption is lane number dependent,distributes with initial density concavely,ranging from 5.56 to 8.00 *** throttling leads to an earlier traffic jam formation in comparison with the case without tunnel throttling.

Travel time prediction with viscoelastic traffic model

Travel time through a ring road with a total length of 80 km has been predicted by a viscoelastic traffic model(VEm), which is developed in analogous to the non-newtonian fluid flow. The VEm expresses a traffic pressure for the unfree flow case by space headway, ensuring that the pressure can be determined by the assumption that the relevant second critical sound speed is exactly equal to the disturbance propagation speed determined by the free flow speed and the braking distance measured by the average vehicular length. The VEm assumes that the sound speed for the free flow case depends on the traffic density in some specific aspects, which ensures that it is exactly identical to the free flow speed on an empty road. To make a comparison, the open navier-Stokes type model developed by Zhang(ZHAnG, H. m. Driver memory, traffic viscosity and a viscous vehicular traffic flow model. Transp. Res. Part B, 37, 27–41(2003)) is adopted to predict the travel time through the ring road for providing the counterpart *** the traffic free flow speed is 80 km/h, the braking distance is supposed to be 45 m,with the jam density uniquely determined by the average length of vehicles l ≈ 5.8 m. To avoid possible singular points in travel time prediction, a distinguishing period for time averaging is pre-assigned to be 7.5 minutes. It is found that the travel time increases monotonically with the initial traffic density on the ring road. Without ramp effects, for the ring road with the initial density less than the second critical density, the travel time can be simply predicted by using the equilibrium speed. However, this simpler approach is unavailable for scenarios over the second critical.

The study of impacts of down-up hill road segment on the density threshold of traffic shock formation in ring road vehicular flow is helpful to the deep understanding of sags’bottleneck *** are freeway segments along which the gradient increases gradually in the traffic *** main aim of this paper is to seek the density threshold of shock formation of vehicular flow in ring road with down-up hill segment,because down-up hill roadway segment is a source to cause capacity reduction that is an attractive topic in vehicular traffic *** seek the density threshold numerically,a viscoelastic continuum model[1]is extended and *** solve the model equations,a fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme for spatial discretization,and a 3rd order Runge-Kutta scheme for time partial derivative term are *** by existing observation data and the navier-Stokes like model[2]extended as EZm is done before conducting extensive numerical *** ring road vehicular flow with three separated down-up hill segments,it is found that the density threshold of shock formation decreases monotonically with the relative difference of free flow speed,this variation can be simply fitted by a third order polynomial.

To explore tunnel effects on ring road traffic flow,a macroscopic urgent-gentle class traffic model is put *** model identifies vehicles with urgent and gentle classes,chooses the tunnel speed limit as free flow speed to express the fundamental diagram in the tunnel,and adopts algebraic expressions to describe traffic pressure and sound *** two speed trajectories at the Kobotoke tunnel in Japan,the model is validated,with good agreement with observed *** results indicate that in the case of having no ramp effects,tunnel mean travel time is almost constant dependent on tunnel *** initial density normalized by jam density is above a threshold of about 0.21,a traffic shock wave originates at the tunnel entrance and propagates *** a threshold drops slightly as a result of on-ramp merging effect,the mean travel time drops as off-ramp diversion effect intensifies *** findings deepen the understanding of tunnel effects on traffic flow in reality.

On optimal control at the onset of a new viral outbreak

We propose a versatile model with a flexible choice of control for an early-pandemic outbreak prevention when vaccine/drug is not yet *** that stage,control is often limited to non-medical interventions like social distancing and other behavioral *** the SIR optimal control problem,we show that the running cost of control satisfying mild,practically justified conditions generates an optimal strategy,u(t),t∈[0,T],that is sustainable up until some moment τ∈[0,T).However,for any t∈[τ,T],the function u(t)will decline as t approaches T,which may cause the number of newly infected people to ***,the window from 0 to τ is the time for public health officials to prepare alternative mitigation measures,such as vaccines,testing,antiviral medications,and *** addition to theoretical study,we develop a fast and stable computational method for solving the proposed optimal control *** efficiency of the new method is illustrated with numerical examples of optimal control trajectories for various cost functions and *** results provide a comprehensive demonstration of the effects of control on the epidemic spread and mitigation expenses,which can serve as invaluable references for public health officials.

Reconstruction of incidence reporting rate for SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant of COVID-19 pandemic in the US

In recent years,advanced regularization techniques have emerged as a powerful tool aimed at stable estimation of infectious disease parameters that are crucial for future projections,prevention,and *** other system parameters,i.e.,incubation and recovery rates,the case reporting rate,Ψ,and the time-dependent effective reproduction number,R_(e)t,are directly influenced by a large number of factors making it impossible to pre-estimate these parameters in any meaningful *** this study,we propose a novel iteratively-regularized trust-region optimization algorithm,combined with SuSvIuIvRD compartmental model,for stable reconstruction ofΨand R_(e)t from reported epidemic data on vaccination percentages,incidence cases,and daily *** innovative regularization procedure exploits(and takes full advantage of)a unique structure of the Jacobian and Hessian approximation for the nonlinear observation *** proposed inversion method is thoroughly tested with synthetic and real SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant data for different regions in the United States of America from July 9,2021,to november 25,*** study shows that case reporting rate during the Delta wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the US is between 12%and 37%,with most states being in the range from 15%to 25%.This confirms earlier accounts on considerable under-reporting of COVID-19 cases due to the impact of”silent spreaders”and the limitations of testing.

magnetic,dielectric and electrical modulus of Ce^(3+) doped cobalt-magnesium ferrite nanoparticles

In this work,the magnetic,dielectric properties and electric modulus of Ce^(3+) substituted cobaltmagnesium(Co_(0.7)mg_(0.3)Ce_(x)Fe_(2-x)O_4)(labeled as CmCF) ferrite nanoparticles were investigated in *** magnetization decreases from 50.05 to 34.87 emu/g for further substituting Ce^(3+) ***,coercivity increases from 738.22 Gs for the CmCFO sample to 912.10 Gs for the CmCF2 sample,then decreases monotonically to 762.1 Gs for the CmCF5 *** cerium content and particle size play important roles in controlling the magnetization and coercivity of the CmCF *** CmCF nanoferrites are suitable for microwave applications since their high-frequency response ranges from 7.72 to 11.07 *** CmCF nanoferrites' dielectric parameter dispersion exhibits normal *** pristine Co-mg nanoferrite only has ε' value of 28.25,but the nanoferrite mCmF2 has ε' value of365.03,with an enhancing ratio of 1192%.The conduction mechanism of the mCmF nanoferrites was determined by fitting the σ_(ac) results via the Jonscher power *** 653 K,large polaron tunnelling is thought to be responsible for this conduction process,which is followed by electron barrier hopping at higher ***-Cole diagrams at different temperatures,assuring the contributions of the grains and their boundaries at lower temperatures(653 K) and only the grains at higher *** on our results,the CmCF nanoferrites hold magnetic and semiconducting nature,which can be used in magnetic devices and dielectrics in lower-frequencies or conductors in higher-frequencies.

In this article, a novel scalarization technique, called the improved objective-constraint approach, is introduced to find efficient solutions of a given multiobjective programming problem. The presented scalarized problem extends the objective-constraint problem. It is demonstrated that how adding variables to the scalarized problem, can lead to find conditions for (weakly, properly) Pareto optimal solutions. Applying the obtained necessary and sufficient conditions, two algorithms for generating the Pareto front approximation of bi-objective and three-objective programming problems are designed. These algorithms are easy to implement and can achieve an even approximation of (weakly, properly) Pareto optimal solutions. These algorithms can be generalized for optimization problems with more than three criterion functions, too. The effectiveness and capability of the algorithms are demonstrated in test problems.

Inclusion of CoTiO_(3) to ameliorate the re/dehydrogenation properties of the mg–na–Al system

For the first time,the mgH_(2)–naAlH_(4)(ratio 4:1)destabilized system with CoTiO_(3) addition has been *** CoTiO_(3)-doped mgH_(2)–naAlH_(4) sample begins to dehydrogenate at 130℃,which is declined by 40℃ compared to the undoped mgH_(2)–naAlH_(4).moreover,the de/rehydrogenation kinetics characteristics of the CoTiO_(3)-doped mgH_(2)–naAlH_(4) were greatly *** the inclusion of CoTiO_(3),the mgH_(2)–naAlH_(4) composite absorbed 5.2 wt.%H_(2),higher than undoped mgH_(2)–naAlH_(4).In the context of dehydrogenation,the CoTiO_(3)-doped mgH_(2)–naAlH_(4) sample desorbed 2.6 wt.%H_(2),almost doubled compared to the amount of hydrogen desorbed from the undoped mgH_(2)–naAlH_(4) *** activation energy obtained by the Kissinger analysis for mgH_(2) decomposition was significantly lower by 35.9 kJ/mol than the undoped mgH_(2)–naAlH_(4) *** reaction mechanism demonstrated that new phases of mgCo and AlTi_(3) were generated in situ during the heating process and are likely to play a substantial catalytic function and be useful in ameliorating the de/rehydrogenation properties of the destabilized mgH_(2)–naAlH_(4) system with the inclusion of CoTiO_(3).
