metformin is a common diabetes drug that may reduce lactate clearance by inhibiting mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation,leading to metforminassociated lactic acidosis(mAlA).As diabetes mellitus is a common chronic metabolic condition found in critically ill patients,pre-existing metformin use can often be found in critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit or the high dependency *** aim of this narrative mini review is therefore to update clinicians about mAlA,and to provide a practical approach to its diagnosis and *** in critically ill patients may be suspected in a patient who has received metformin and who has a high anion gap metabolic acidosis,and confirmed when lactate exceeds 5 mmol/*** factors include those that reduce renal elimination of metformin(renal impairment from any cause,histamine-2 receptor antagonists,ribociclib)and excessive alcohol consumption(as ethanol oxidation consumes nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides that are also required for lactate metabolism).Treatment of mAlA involves immediate cessation of metformin,supportive management,treating other concurrent causes of lactic acidosis like sepsis,and treating any coexisting diabetic *** mAlA requires extracorporeal removal of metformin with either intermittent hemodialysis or continuous kidney replacement *** optimal time to restart metformin has not been *** is nonetheless reasonable to first ensure that lactic acidosis has resolved,and then recheck the kidney function post-recovery from critical illness,ensuring that the estimated glomerular filtration rate is 30 ml/min/1.73 m^(2) or better before restarting metformin.

The step-up resonant converters are widely adopted to provide high voltage in kV-level for electric propulsion system due to their high efficiency,low mass,modularisation,and high-power *** bipolar Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier(BiCWVm)is a major circuit that steps up the voltage in the resonant ***,the diode nonlinearity in BiCWVm can introduce self-sustained quasi-periodic oscillations in the voltage and current waveforms,which is commonly known as the Deane and Hamill(DH)*** oscillation can lead to higher magnetic loss and control failure,and it is more likely to present in the gallium nitride-based converter due to the highfrequency *** authors aim to investigate and mitigate the DH phenomenon systematically so that proper mitigation can be *** facilitate the investigation,the circuit before the BiCWVm in the converter is derived and modelled as a voltage source v_(m)and a series inductor l_(sy).Also,the reverse recovery process of the diode in the BiCWVm can be represented by a piecewise-linear(PWl)model,with the simplified circuit and PWl model,the relationship between voltage and current under different operating conditions can be determined with *** relationship allows to understand the mechanism of diode reverse recovery in BiCWVm that leads to DH ***,a hybrid-/full-silicon carbide(SiC)design is proposed to mitigate the DH phenomenon,which is verified experimentally for a 300-kHz,5-W,20-V/1.5-kV GaN-based step-up resonant converter.

Bird plumage color has been assessed as a possible trait driving the presence of bird species in urban *** some species can see the ultraviolet(UV) spectrum,the mentioned studies did not take into account UV reflectance when characterizing bird *** study aimed to use a recent database of the colorfulness in passerines that incorporated the UV spectrum to compare bird colorfulness and other traits between urban parks and rural areas in Central-East *** in urban parks were surveyed in 51 parks in 6 cities during breeding and non-breeding seasons.A list of Passeriformes species from parks was created,and a list of urban avoider species was created from the *** traits were body mass,clutch size,migratory status,nesting site,diet and habitat breadth,and plumage colorfulness.A total of 85 species were detected in the regional pool,of which 30 species were detected in urban *** species present in urban parks were more colorful than bird species only present in rural *** addition,bird presence in urban parks was positively related to their regional frequency and diet ***,urban presence was related to nesting on trees and buildings,whereas species not present in urban parks nested on the *** results obtained showed that bird color is significantly associated with presence of bird species in urban parks.

Illness-induced hyperglycemia impairs neutrophil function,increases pro-inflammatory cytokines,inhibits fibrinolysis,and promotes cellular *** turn,these mechanisms lead to pneumonia and surgical site infections,prolonged mechanical ventilation,prolonged hospitalization,and increased *** optimal glucose control,blood glucose measurements need to be done accurately,frequently,and *** choosing glycemic targets,one should keep the glycemic variabilitymmol/l and avoid targeting a lower limit of blood glucosemmol/*** upper limit of blood glucose should be set according to casemix and the quality of glucose control.A lower glycemic target range(i.e.,blood glucose 4.5-7.8 mmol/l)would be favored for patients without diabetes mellitus,with traumatic brain injury,or who are at risk of surgical site *** avoid harm from hypoglycemia,strict adherence to glycemic control protocols and timely glucose measurements are *** contrast,a higher glycemic target range(i.e.,blood glucose 7.8-10 mmol/l)would be favored as a default choice for medical-surgical patients and patients with diabetes *** targets may be modified if technical advances for blood glucose measurement and control can be achieved.

Due to the growing demand for clean and renewable hydrogen fuel,there has been a surge of interest in electrocatalytic water-splitting devices driven by renewable energy ***,the feasibility of self-driven water splitting is limited by inefficient connections between functional modules,lack of highly active and stable electrocatalysts,and intermittent and unpredictable renewable energy ***,we construct a dualmodulated three-dimensional(3D)NiCo_(2)O_(4)@NiCo_(2)S_(4)(denoted as NCONCS)heterostructure deposited on nickel foam as a multifunctional electrode for electrocatalytic water splitting driven by photovoltaic-powered *** to a stable 3D architecture configuration,abundant active sites,efficient charge transfer,and tuned interface properties,the NCONCS delivers a high specific capacity and rate performance for supercapacitors.A twoelectrode electrolyzer assembled with the NCONCS as both the anode and the cathode only requires a low cell voltage of 1.47 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm^(−2) in alkaline electrolyte,which outperforms the state-of-the-art bifunctional *** calculations suggest that the generated heterointerfaces in NCONCS improve the surface binding capability of reaction intermediates while regulating the local electronic structures,which thus accelerates the reaction kinetics of water *** a proof of concept,an integrated configuration comprising a two-electrode electrolyzer driven by two series-connected supercapacitors charged by a solar cell delivers a high product yield with superior durability.
