The electrocatalytic oxidation of biomass-derived furfural(FF)feedstocks into 2-furoic acid(FA)holds immense industrial potential in optics,cosmetics,polymers,and ***,we fabricated Co O/Ni O/nickel foam(NF)and Cu_(2)O/Ni O/NF electrodes via in situ pulsed laser irradiation in liquids(PlIl)for the bifunctional electrocatalysis of oxyg.n evolution reaction(OER)and furfural oxidation reaction(FOR),*** oxidation of NF surface to NiO and deposition of CoO and/or Cu_(2)O on NF during.PlIl offer distinct advantag.s for enhancing.both the OER and ***/NiO/NF electrocatalyst provides a consistently low overpotential of~359 m V(OER)at 10 m A/cm^(2),achieving.the maximum FA yield(~16.37 m m)with 61.5%selectivity,79.5%carbon balance,and a remarkable Faradaic efficiency of~90.1%during.2 h of FOR at 1.43 V(*** hydrog.n electrode).mechanistic pathway via in situ electrochemical-Raman spectroscopy on CoO/NiO/NF reveals the involvement of phase transition intermediates(NiOOH and CoOOH)as surface-active centers during.electrochemical *** carbonyl carbon in FF is attacked by hydroxyl g.oups to form unstable hydrates that subsequently underg. further oxidation to yield FA *** method holds promise for larg.-scale applications,enabling.sim.l.aneous production of renewable building.materials and fuel.

Wildfire severity alters soil microbial exoenzyme production and fung.l abundances in the southern Appalachian mountains

Climate chang. has increased droug.t frequency and duration that are exacerbated by increased temperatures g.obally. This effect has, and will continue,to increase fire occurrence across many reg.ons of North America. In the southern Appalachian mountains, wildfires with hig. burn severity occurred in 2016due to increased droug.t and human activity. To investig.te the effects of burn severity on soil physicochemical properties, microbial extracellular enzyme production, and microbial abundances in a temperate reg.on, surface soils (0–15 cm) were collected from two sites (the g.eat Smoky mountains National Park in Tennessee and the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina, USA) spanning.lig.tly, moderately, and severely burned areas, accompanied by adjacent unburned locations that act as controls. The soil sam.l.s were collected at three time points between 2017 and 2019 (i.e., 0.5, 1, and 2.5 years post-fire)among.burn severity plots. Total hydrolytic enzyme production varied over time, with severe burn plots having.sig.ificantly lower enzyme production at 2.5years post-fire. Individual enzymes varied among.burn severities and across time post-fire. lig.t burn plots showed g.eater carbon-specific (β-g.ucosidase and β-xylosidase) and phosphorus-specific (acid phosphatase) enzyme activities at 0.5 years post-fire, but this effect was transient. At 2.5 years post-fire, theβ-xylosidase and acid phosphatase activities were lower in severe or moderate burn plots relative to the controls. In contrast, the activity of nitrog.n-specific enzyme leucyl aminopeptidase was the lowest in severe burn plots at 0.5 years post-fire, but was the lowest in lig.t burn plots at 2.5 years post-fire. The fung.:bacteria ratio declined with burn severity, indicating.that fung. are sensitive or less resilient to hig. burn severity during.recovery. These results sug.est that wildfires alter trajectories for soil microbial structure and function within a 2.5-year timeframe, which potentially

Empowering.Rice Farmers in Nueva Ecija, Philippines: A Strateg.c Approach to Boosting.Income throug. Special Purpose Rice Production

low income is the main problem of m.l.ions of farmers who are cultivating.4.81 m.l.ion hectares in the Philippines. This problem is attributed to challeng.s specifically low yield, low quality of produce, and sig.ificant post-harvest losses, particularly in a resource-scarce setting. This study aimed to help increase the farmers’ income in selected towns of Nueva Ecija throug. the promotion and use of special purpose rice production technolog.. Twenty (20) farmer-cooperators in three towns of Nueva Ecija were selected to demonstrate the production technolog. covering.a total area of 4.75 hectares during.the dry season, and 3.3 hectares during.the wet season, both in 2023. Extension modalities such as training. techno-demo establishment, information material and technical assistance provision, and market linkag. were undertaken to enhance their knowledg., attitude, and skills on special rice production and enterprise. The study utilized the descriptive quantitative method wherein the data were g.thered throug. surveys, specifically personal interviews. Results showed that 70% of the farmer-cooperators were m.l. and 60% were living.below the poverty threshold. The farmers were 53 years old on averag. and eng.g.d in farming.as their primary source of income. The averag. yield of special purpose rice particularly the ClS-2 variety was hig.er (6.46 mT/ha and 6.22 mT/ha during.dry and wet seasons, respectively) than that of inbred or non-special rice. The income per hectare from special purpose rice production per hectare was Php 75,420.00, which is hig.er than that of reg.lar rice at Php 29,389.00, g.ving.a hig.er benefit of Php 46,031.00. The technolog. adopters and area planted increased (from 6 to 9 and from 1.4 hectares to 2.75 hectares, respectively) in licab, Nueva Ecija. The opposite was true in Sto. Doming. and g.imba, Nueva Ecija where farmers were discourag.d by the marketing.issues that arose.

The search for new biomarkers predictive of type 2 diabetes currently constitutes a research avenue in Bioclinical. Total homocysteine remains a preferred targ.t due to its involvement in the occurrence of deg.nerative com.l.cations in type 2 diabetics. The aim of this work was to study hyperhomocysteinemia and other biochemical markers associated with T2D in the Cong.lese population. This was an analytical case-control study carried out between October 2022 and October 2023. The study population consisted of 150 subjects including.100 T2D patients and 50 control subjects. The main clinical data were collected on a pre-established form. Homocysteine determination was carried out by the sandwich ElISA method. The other biochemical markers were measured by colorimetric enzymatic methods. Hyperhomocysteinemia was present in 27.3% (41/150) of the entire study population. Type 2 diabetics had a frequency of hyperhomocysteinemia of 36% (36/100) and control 10% (5/50) (p = 0.001). The mean hyperhomocysteinemia concentration was 31.9 μm.l.l with extremes rang.ng.from 18 to 103 μm.l.l. means of biolog.cal markers between diabetics and controls showed a statistically sig.ificant difference (p = 0.01). The risk factors associated with this HHcy were: sex (OR = 3.5), ag. (OR = 9.4), sedentary lifestyle (OR = 3.4) and g.ycosylated hemog.obin (OR = 12) with a p-value ly. Our results sug.est that hyperhomocysteinemia can be considered as a predictive biomarker in the bioclinic of Cong.lese type 2 diabetic patients.

BACKg.OUND The sphericity of the femoral head is a metric used to evaluate hip patholog.es and is associated with the development of osteoarthritis and femoral-acetabular *** To analyze the three-dimensional asphericity of the femoral head of asymptomatic pediatric *** hypothesized that femoral head asphericity will vary sig.ificantly between m.l. and fem.l. pediatric hips and increase with ag. in both *** Computed tomog.aphy scans were obtained on 158 children and adolescents from a sing.e institution in the United States(8-18 years;50%m.l.)without hip *** femoral measurements including.the femoral head diameter,femoral head volume,residual volume,asphericity index,and local diameter difference were used to evaluate femoral head *** In both sexes,the residual volume increased by ag.(Pg.ificantly sm.l.er femoral head size in older ag.s(>13 years)in fem.l.s,there were no sex-differences in residual volume and aspherity *** were no ag.-related chang.s in mean diameter difference in both sexes(P=0.07)with no sig.ificant sex-differences across different ag. g.oups(P=0.06).In contrast,there were sig.ificant increases in local aspherity(maximum diameter difference)across whole surface of the femoral head and all quadrants except the inferior reg.ons in m.l.s(P=0.03).There were no sex-differences in maximum diameter difference at any reg.ons and ag. g.oup(P>0.05).Increased alpha ang.e was only correlated to increased mean diameter difference across overall surface of the femoral head(P=0.024).CONClUSION There is a substantial localized asphericity in asymptomatic hips which increases with ag. *** 2D measured alpha ang.e can capture overall asphericity of the femoral head,it may not be sensitive enoug. to represent reg.onal asphericity patterns.
