Big plants--do they limit species coexistence?

Aims According to conventional theory,larger plant species are likely to inflict more intense competition on other(smaller)*** tested a deducible prediction from this:that a larger species should generally be expected to impose greater limits on the number of species that can coexist with *** Species richness was sampled under plant canopies for a selection of woody species(‘host’species)that display a wide range of adult sizes(from small shrubs to large trees),growing within natural vegetation of the Interior Douglas-fir zone of southern British Columbia,*** data were compared with species richness levels sampled within randomly placed plots within the host species *** Findings A prominent host species size effect on species richness was detected but only narrowly at the small end of the species size *** most(90%)of the increasing size range of host species,the number of species residing under the host canopy showed no significant decrease relative to the number expected by random assembly,based on species richness within randomly defined equivalent areas within the habitat of the host *** apparent‘null effect’,we suggest,is explained not because these larger species have no effect on community *** postulate that larger species are indeed likely to be more effective in causing competitive exclusion of some smaller species(as expected from conventional theory),but that any potential limitation effect of this on resident species richness is offset for two reasons:(i)larger species also generate niche spaces that they cannot exploit under their own canopies and so have minimal impact(as competitors)on smaller species that can occupy these niches and(ii)certain other small species—despite small size—have effective competitive abilities under the severe competition that occurs within host neighbourhoods of larger *** and other recent studies call for re-evaluation of traditional views on the role o

Decidual natural killer （dNK） cells express an array of activation receptors to regulate placental immunity and development during early pregnancy. We investigated the functional character of human dNK cells during the first and second trimester of gestation and the interaction between dNK and trophoblast cells. Although the frequency of CD56＋CD16-dNK among the total CD45＋ leukocytes did not change over this period, the expression of the activating receptors, NKp80 and NKG2D, was greatly upregulated. We observed a significantly higher number of extravillous trophoblast cells in proximity to the dNK cells in the first trimester in comparison with the second trimester decidua. NKG2D expression by first trimester dNK cells was decreased when co-cultured with the HTR-8 trophoblast cell line. In the second trimester, functional markers of dNK activation, i.e., angiogenic factor production （e.g., vascular endothelial growth factor, interleukin-8, interferon-gamma）, remained stable despite an increase in NKp80 or NKG2D surface expression. Furthermore, the degranulation capacity of dNK cells, as assessed by CD107a, was decreased in the second trimester. We suggest that in the first trimester, trophoblast-dNK interactions generate a population of dNK cells with a suppressed activating phenotype. In the second trimester, the loss of trophoblast-dNK interactions led to the inhibition of dNK cell function, although their activating receptor expression was increased. We speculate that during pregnancy, two mechanisms operate to modulate the dNK cell activation：suppression of activating receptor levels in the first trimester by trophoblasts and disengagement of receptor-ligand coupling in the second trimester.

Background:One of the biggest challenges in the swine industry is to increase female reproductive ***,vulva score categories(VSC),assessed prior to puberty,has been proposed as an indicator trait of efficient reproductive performance in *** objective of this study was to validate the use of VSC as an indicator trait for reproductive performance,and to perform genetic and genomic analyses for ***:The phenotypic relationship of VSC,using a three-point scale:small(VSC-S),medium(VSC-m),and large(VSC-L),on reproductive performance was evaluated on three *** was measured at 15 weeks of age,for farms 1 and 2,and at 14 weeks of age for farm 3 on 3981 Yorkshire gilts,in which 1083 had genotypes(~50 K SNPs).Genetic parameters for VSC with reproductive traits were estimated using ssGBLUP.A Genome-wide association study(GWAS)for VSC was performed using ***:For the phenotypic analysis of VSC across datasets,differences in performance were identified there was a significant effect(P≤0.05)for the interaction between Farm and VSC for total number dead(TND),and a trend(Pmber born(TNB).There were significant(P≤0.05)pre-defined contrasts of VSC-S versus VSC-m+L on TNB,number born alive(NBA),TND,number of stillborn(NSB),and number of mummies(mUm).Heritability estimates for VSC as a categorical trait(VSCc)and a quantitative trait(VSCq)were 0.40±0.02 and 0.83±0.02,respectively,for across farm,0.13±0.07 and 0.20±0.10,respectively,for Farm1,0.07±0.07 and 0.09±0.09,respectively,for Farm2,and 0.20±0.03 and 0.34±0.05,respectively,for *** across farms,favorable genetic correlations estimates were found for TNB(0.28±0.19)and NBA(0.26±0.17).Within farms,moderate genetic correlations between VSC with reproductive traits were found for TNB(0.61±0.47)and mUm(0.69±0.47)for farm 1,for number of services until first farrow(NS;0.69±0.38)and unique service with successful first farrow(SFS;−0.71±0.38)for farm *** genomic regions

Advance Directives in the Context of Uncertain Prognosis for Residents of Nursing Homes

This report documents the findings of a mixed-methods study focused on the advanced directives of 182 residents of three LTC facilities in southern Ontario, Canada. Although almost all had a completed advance directive within 3 months of death, most did not have a palliative designation or directive until a few days before they died. Each facility’s written Progress Notes revealed staff members usually sought additional confirmation of care preferences from residents’ substitute decision-makers within a few days of the death. It was thus common for advance directives to change from a more interventionist approach to the least interventionist approach near death. This change indicates that the meaning and significance of advance care planning and resulting advance directives must be considered in light of the processes and temporal factors involved in their completion and use within this distinct population. The relational nature of advance care planning and concern about ageism as a factor for withholding or withdrawing life support for LTC residents are considered as possible explanatory factors. These findings and their implications are described in relation to end-of-life care policies and practices in LTC facilities.

本实验研究的目的是,调查在双任务条件下一个运动系列能否被不觉察地掌握,内隐学习是否比外显学习更有效地增加保持。36名实验对象被随机分为内隐学习组或外显学习组。要求所有被试通过敲击一个键盘上的F和J键,来移动计算机屏幕上的横杆,去接住一个下落的小球。一个固定的5种小球下落曲线的系列被安插在每组15次练习的中段。同时,实验参加者需要数每组练习中的所听到的嘟嘟声的数目,以作为第二项任务。在掌握该技能后的24小时进行3次保持测验。ANOVA分析发现固定小球下落曲线段的接球成绩随着练习的增加而提高,但是练习对随机段没有作用。尽管两种练习条件下,运动技能学习成绩没有差异,但内隐学习组比外显学习组在模拟接球的保持测试和第二项任务中表现较准确。这些结果显示内隐学习是一个改善运动技能长期记忆的有效手段,并且与外显学习相比,它在练习中占用较少的认知资源。
