Ranking environmental and edaphic attributes driving soil microbial community structure and activity with special attention to spatial and temporal scales

The incredibly complex soil microbial communities at small scales make their analysis and identification of reasons for the observed structures challenging.microbial community structure is mainly a result of the inoculum(dispersal),the selective advantages of those organisms under the habitat-based environmental attributes,and the ability of those colonizers to sustain themselves over time.Since soil is protective,and its microbial inhabitants have long adapted to varied soil conditions,significant portions of the soil microbial community structure are likely stable.Hence,a substantial portion of the community will not correlate to often measured soil attributes.We suggest that the drivers be ranked on the basis of their importance to the fundamental needs of the microbes:(i)those that supply energy,i.e.,organic carbon and electron acceptors;(i)environmental effectors or stressors,i.e.,pH,salt,drought,and toxic chemicals;(ii)macro-organism associations,i.e.,plants and their seasonality,animals and their fecal matter,and soil fauna;and(iv)nutrients,in order,N,P,and probably of lesser importance,other micronutrients,and metals.The relevance of drivers also varies with spatial and time scales,for example,aggregate to field to regional,and persistent to dynamic populations to transcripts,and with the extent of phylogenetic difference,hence phenotypic differences in organismal groups.We present a summary matrix to provide guidance on which drivers are important for particular studies,with special emphasis on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales,and illustrate this with genomic and population(rRNA gene)data from selected studies.

Efficient electrocatalytic rupture of energy-rich molecules(H_(2)and O_(2))is a green approach for gener-ating clean energy for modern societies.In this context,porphyry-type molecular electrocatalysts act intelligently toward oxygen reduction reaction(ORR),a fundamental process in fuel cells,due to their redox-rich chemistry,which involves core metal ions and macrocyclic ligands.The concerned scientific community has tried many times to correlate the ORR intermediates with their formation kinetics and simplify the associated multi H+/e-stages during the ORR process,constructing several volcano plots be-tween catalytic Tafel data,turnover frequencies,and overpotentials for many electrocatalysts.Despite the fact that many review articles on molecular electrocatalysts for ORR have been published,understanding the strategic implications and molecular catalyst intelligence towards homogenous ORR has been poorly explored.This review examined the relationships between volcano plots of current vs.thermodynamic parameters and the Sabatier principle in order to explain the intelligence of molecular electrocatalysts and approaches for their creation,as well as the difficulties and potential prospects of molecular electro-catalysts.These facts distinguish this review from previously published articles and will pique the scien-tific community’s interest in avoiding trial-and-error procedures for catalyst creation while also allowing for more exact evaluations of the molecular catalyst’s performance.

Optimizing calcination of coal by-products for maximizing REE leaching recovery and minimizing Al,Ca,and Fe contamination

High-temperature calcination is effective in improving the leaching characteristics of rare earth elements(REEs) from conventional REE-bearing minerals by transforming them into more leachable forms.However,the recovery of contaminants such as Al,Fe,and Ca also increases significantly.The objective of the study was to maximize the REE extraction while minimizing the concentration of contaminant ions(Al,Ca,and Fe) in the leach solution.Representative density fractions of the coarse refuse from the Baker and Fire Clay seam coal refuse were pulverized to a top size of 180 μm and used as a feedstock for the study.All the samples generated from thermal treatment were leached at 1%(w/v) using 1.2 mol/L sulfuric acid at 75℃ for 2 h.Test results from a parametric program based on a Box-Behnken design were used for modeling and optimization of three operating parameters associated with the lab-scale calcination process.The parameters included temperature(400-800℃),ramp rate(2-10℃/min) and holding time(0-120 min).It was determined that the calcination temperature was the most significant parameter influencing REE recovery.The majority of the heavy rare earth elements(HREEs) were found to be present in an insoluble form in the calcination products and were marginally affected by thermal treatment.A strong correlation between light rare earth elements recovery(LREEs) and Al suggested a possible association with clays.The optimum operating conditions for high REE recovery with comparatively lower contaminant concentration for 1.6 specific gravity float and 2.2 sink fractions of Baker and Fire Clay seam material were determined to be at 776,800℃ and 407,800℃,calcining temperatures,respectively.A higher optimum temperature of 1.6 float fraction of Baker seam relative to Fire Clay seam material was due to elevated pyrite concentration in Baker seam material.Thermal treatment at 400℃ converted pyrite into a soluble intermedium iron oxide,resulting in a high Fe content in the leachate.Calcining at 776℃ converted most of the solubl

Graphene derivatives as efficient hole transport materials for lead-free double perovskite(CsSnI) solar cells: a numerical study

The double perovskite Cs2SnI6has notable optical and electrical characteristics， rendering it a highly prospective candidate for deployment as the absorber layer in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We simulated the performance of PSCs using lead-free Cs2SnI6double perovskite absorber layer and graphene derivatives， namely graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO)， as hole transport layers (HTLs). Our findings show that rGO offers an excellent hole extraction property with minimal interfacial recombination compared to GO. PSC utilizing rGO as the HTL material achieved a power conversion efficiency of 19.07%， while those employing GO HTL attained only 16.9%. The superior performance of rGO is attributed to its greater charge carrier mobility of rGO and its favorable energy level alignment with the double perovskite absorber layer. In contrast， the mismatch in the charge transport properties between the absorber layer and the GO HTL resulted in poor performance. Our study showcases the potential of using graphene derivative-based HTLs for realizing lead-free PSCs.

Investigating the Evolution of Amati Parameters with Redshift

Gamma-ray bursts(GRBs) are among the brightest objects in the Universe and, hence, can be observed up to a very high redshift. Properly calibrated empirical correlations between intensity and spectral correlations of GRBs can be used to estimate the cosmological parameters. However, the possibility of the evolution of GRBs with redshift is a long-standing puzzle. In this work, we used 162 long-duration GRBs to determine whether GRBs below and above a certain redshift have different properties. The GRBs are split into two groups, and we fit the Amati relation for each group separately. Our findings demonstrate that estimations of the Amati parameters for the two groups are substantially dissimilar. We perform simulations to investigate whether the selection effects could cause the difference. Our analysis shows that the differences may be either intrinsic or due to systematic errors in the data, and the selection effects are not their true origin. However, in-depth analysis with a new data set comprised of 119 long GRBs shows that intrinsic scatter may partly be responsible for such effects.

Improving Heat Transfer in Parabolic Trough Solar Collectors by magnetic Nanofluids

A parabolic trough solar collector(PTSC)converts solar radiation into thermal energy.However,low thermal efficiency of PTSC poses a hindrance to the deployment of solar thermal power plants.Thermal performance of PTSC is enhanced in this study by incorporating magnetic nanoparticles into the working fluid.The circular receiver pipe,with dimensions of 66 mm diameter,2 mm thickness,and 24 m length,is exposed to uniform temperature and velocity conditions.The working fluid,Therminol-66,is supplemented with Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles at concentrations ranging from 1%to 4%.The findings demonstrate that the inclusion of nanoparticles increases the convective heat transfer coefficient(HTC)of the PTSC,with higher nanoparticle volume fractions leading to greater heat transfer but increased pressure drop.The thermal enhancement factor(TEF)of the PTSC is positively affected by the volume fraction of nanoparticles,both with and without a magnetic field.Notably,the scenario with a 4%nanoparticle volume fraction and a magnetic field strength of 250 G exhibits the highest TEF,indicating superior thermal performance.These findings offer potential avenues for improving the efficiency of PTSCs in solar thermal plants by introducing magnetic nanoparticles into the working fluid.

Estimating Optimal Location of STATCOm and minimization of Congestion Cost by Locational marginal Price Using Flower Pollination， and Particle Swarm Optimization Techniques

Restructuring of power market not only introduces competition， but also brings complexity which increases overloading of Transmission Lines (TL). To obliviate this complexity， this paper aims to mitigate the overloading and estimate the optimal location of Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOm) by reducing congestion for a deregulated power system. The proposed method is based on the use of Locational marginal Price (LmP) difference technique and congestion cost. LmPs are obtained as a by-product of Optimal Power Flow (OPF)， whereas Congestion Cost (CC) is a function of difference in LmP and power flows. An endeavor is justified by reducing the CCand solution space which can identify the TLs more suitable for placement of STATCOm. Importantly， total real power loss， reactive power loss and total CCare the three main objective functions in this optimization process. The process is implemented by developing an IEEE-69 bus test system which verifies and validates the effectiveness of proposed optimization technique. Additionally， a comparative analysis is enumerated by implementing two optimization techniques: Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The comparative analysis is sufficient to demonstrate the superiority of FPA technique over PSO technique in estimating an optimal placement of a STATCOm. The results from the load-flow analysis illustrate the reduction in CC， total real and reactive power loss using FPA technique over PSO technique. Overall， satisfactory results are obtained without using complex calculations which verify the effectiveness of optimization techniques.

Geographic patterns of genetic diversity and fertility restoration ability of Asian and African origin pearl millet populations

A set of 45 diverse Asian and African origin/bred populations of pearl millet were investigated multi-locationally for morphological traits including grain yield and assessed for their fertility restoration ability on three cytoplasmic male sterility(CmS) systems in two contrasting seasons. Significant genetic variation was found for all the yield linked traits. multivariate analysis for grain yield and its component traits grouped these populations into five clusters. most of the Asian origin populations grouped into single cluster(Cluster III) and separated from the rest of the African origin populations indicating the presence of correspondence between clustering pattern and geographical origin of the populations. Clusters dominated with Asian populations(As-As) had linkages with early flowering, short plant height, more number of tillers, small and thin panicles, small seeded and low grain yield compared to the clusters dominated by African populations(Af-Af) or African origin and Asian bred(Af-As) populations.Genetically related populations having common parentage were found grouped in same clusters.Fertility restoration/maintainer frequency of 45 populations on three diverse CmS systems revealed that overall fertility restoration frequency was highest for A1(86%) followed by A4(37%) and for A5(7%) CmS system. Five populations were identified as potential sources for developing maintainer lines for all three CmS systems and eight populations were identified specifically for A;and A;CmS systems. A set of 11 and four populations were identified for restorer line development exclusively for A;and A;CmS system,respectively. Six populations were identified for the development of dual restorers for both A;and A;CmS system.

Nitrous oxide is one of the most commonly used inhalational anesthetic agents used in practice.It is a cost-effective,pleasant,safe,and versatile anesthetic agent with many desirable properties like good quality analgesia,decreased awareness,accelerated induction and recovery from anesthesia,and reduced utilization of other expensive inhalational agents with potential cost savings.The use of nitrous oxide has been questioned by a lot of studies and case reports perceiving its adverse systemic,hematological,immune,and neurologic adverse effects.However,the literature in the recent past has tried to resolve the controversies related to its use.The concerns over an increase in cardiovascular complications and mortality following nitrous oxide use have been negated by recent data.However,its use in certain vulnerable populations like children with cobalamin and folate deficiency or defects in their metabolic pathways remains a cause of concern for its toxic effects.In this narrative review,we aim to discuss the pharmacological properties of nitrous oxide,the potential advantages and drawbacks of the use of nitrous oxide in children,address the neurodevelopmental and other systemic effects,and throw light on the evidence regarding the safety of nitrous oxide use and its current role in pediatric procedural sedation and anesthesia practice.The literature related to its use in the pediatric population for painful procedures and surgeries has been summarized.
