Relationships between Terrain Features and Forecasting Errors of Surface Wind Speeds in a mesoscale Numerical Weather Prediction model

Numerical weather prediction(NWP)models have always presented large forecasting errors of surface wind speeds over regions with complex *** this study,surface wind forecasts from an operational NWP model,the SmS-WARR(Shanghai meteorological Service-WRF ADAS Rapid Refresh System),are analyzed to quantitatively reveal the relationships between the forecasted surface wind speed errors and terrain features,with the intent of providing clues to better apply the NWP model to complex terrain *** terrain features are described by three parameters:the standard deviation of the model grid-scale orography,terrain height error of the model,and slope *** results show that the forecast bias has a unimodal distribution with a change in the standard deviation of *** minimum mE(the mean value of bias)is 1.2 m s^(-1) when the standard deviation is between 60 and 70 m.A positive correlation exists between bias and terrain height error,with the mE increasing by 10%−30%for every 200 m increase in terrain height *** mE decreases by 65.6%when slope angle increases from(0.5°−1.5°)to larger than 3.5°for uphill winds but increases by 35.4%when the absolute value of slope angle increases from(0.5°−1.5°)to(2.5°−3.5°)for downhill *** sensitivity experiments are carried out with a model output statistical(mOS)calibration model for surface wind speeds and mE(RmSE)has been reduced by 90%(30%)by introducing terrain parameters,demonstrating the value of this study.

A ratiometric fluorescent probe for hypoxanthine(Hx)detection was established based on the mimic enzyme and fluorescence characteristics of cobalt-doped graphite-phase carbon nitride(Co doped g-C_(3)N_(4)).In addition to emitting strong fluorescence,the peroxidase activity of Co doped g-C_(3)N_(4)can catalyze the reaction of O-phenylenediamine and H_(2)O_(2)to produce diallyl phthalate which can emit yellow fluorescence at 570 *** the decomposition of Hx by xanthine oxidase,Hx can be indirectly detected by the generating hydrogen peroxide based on the measurement of fluorescent ratio I(F_(570)/F_(370)).The linear range was 1.7-272.2 mg/kg(R^(2)=0.997),and the detection limit was 1.52 mg/kg(3σ/K,n=9).The established method was applied to Hx detection in bass,grass carp,and shrimp,and the data were verified by *** result shows that the established probe is sensitive,accurate,and reliable,and can be used for Hx detection in aquatic products.

Global images of auroras obtained by cameras on spacecraft are a key tool for studying the near-Earth ***,the cameras are sensitive not only to auroral emissions produced by precipitating particles,but also to dayglow emissions produced by photoelectrons induced by *** emissions and scattered sunlight can contribute to the background *** fully utilize such images in space science,background contamination must be removed to isolate the auroral *** we outline a data-driven approach to modeling the background intensity in multiple images by formulating linear inverse problems based on B-splines and spherical *** approach is robust,flexible,and iteratively deselects outliers,such as auroral *** final model is smooth across the terminator and accounts for slow temporal variations and large-scale asymmetries in the *** demonstrate the model by using the three far ultraviolet cameras on the Imager for magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration(ImAGE)*** method can be applied to historical missions and is relevant for upcoming missions,such as the Solar wind magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(SmILE)mission.

An improved algorithm for retrieving thin sea ice thickness in the Arctic Ocean from SmOS and SmAP L-band radiometer data

The aim of this study was to develop an improved thin sea ice thickness(SIT)retrieval algorithm in the Arctic Ocean from the Soil moisture Ocean Salinity and Soil moisture Active Passive L-band radiometer *** SIT retrieval algorithm was trained using the simulated SIT from the cumulative freezing degree days model during the freeze-up period over five carefully selected regions in the Beaufort,Chukchi,East Siberian,Laptev and Kara seas and utilized the microwave polarization ratio(PR)at incidence angle of 40°.The improvements of the proposed retrieval algorithm include the correction for the sea ice concentration impact,reliable reference SIT data over different representative regions of the Arctic Ocean and the utilization of microwave polarization ratio that is independent of ice *** relationship between the SIT and PR was found to be almost stable across the five selected *** SIT retrievals were then compared to other two existing algorithms(i.e.,UH_SIT from the University of Hamburg and UB_SIT from the University of Bremen)and validated against independent SIT data obtained from moored upward looking sonars(ULS)and airborne electromagnetic(Em)induction *** results suggest that the proposed algorithm could achieve comparable accuracies to UH_SIT and UB_SIT with root mean square error(RmSE)being about 0.20 m when validating using ULS SIT data and outperformed the UH_SIT and UB_SIT with RmSE being about 0.21 m when validatng using Em SIT *** proposed algorithm can be used for thin sea ice thickness(m)estimation in the Arctic Ocean and requires less auxiliary data in the SIT retrieval procedure which makes its implementation more practical.

Spatial pattern recognition for near-surface high temperature increases in mountain areas using mODIS and SRTm DEm

Abrupt near-surface temperature changes in mountainous areas are a special component of the mountain climate *** and accurate measurements of the locations,intensity,and width of the near-surface changes are necessary but highly difficult due to the complicated environmental conditions and instrumental *** paper develops a spatial pattern recognition method to measure the near-surface high temperature increase(NSHTI),one of the lesser-attended ***,raster window measurement was proposed to calculate the temperature lapse rate using mODIS land surface temperature and SRTm DEm *** fully considers the terrain heights of two neighboring cells on opposite or adjacent slopes with a moving window of 3×3 cell ***,a threshold selection was performed to identify the NSHTI cells using a threshold of-0.65℃/100 ***,the NSHTI strips were parameterized through raster vectorization and spatial *** Yunnan,a mountainous province in southwestern China,as the study area,the results indicate that the NSHTI cells concentrate in a strip-like pattern along the mountains and valleys,and the strips are almost parallel to the altitude contours with a slight northward ***,they are located mostly at a 3/5 height of high mountains or within 400 m from the valley floors,where the controlling topographic index is the altitude of the terrain trend surface but not the absolute elevation and the topographic uplift height and cutting ***,the NSHTI intensity varies with the geographic locations and the proportions increase with an exponential trend,and the horizontal width has a mean of about 1000 m and a maximum of over 5000 *** result demonstrates that the proposed method can effectively recognize NSHTI boundaries over mountains,providing support for the modeling of weather and climate systems and the development of mountain resources.

Evaluation of Nonbreaking Wave-Induced mixing Parameterization Schemes Based on a One-Dimensional Ocean model

Surface waves have a considerable effect on vertical mixing in the upper *** the past two decades,the vertical mixing induced through nonbreaking surface waves has been used in ocean and climate models to improve the simulation of the upper *** far,several nonbreaking wave-induced mixing parameterization schemes have been proposed;however,no quantitative comparison has been performed among *** this paper,a one-dimensional ocean model was used to compare the performances of five schemes,including those of Qiao et al.(Q),Hu and Wang(HW),huang and Qiao(HQ),Pleskachevsky et al.(P),and Ghantous and Babanin(GB).Similar to previous studies,all of these schemes can decrease the simulated sea surface temperature(SST),increase the subsurface temperature,and deepen the mixed layer,thereby alleviating the common thermal deviation problem of the ocean model for upper ocean *** these schemes,the HQ scheme exhibited the weakest wave-induced mixing effect,and the HW scheme exhibited the strongest effect;the other three schemes exhibited roughly the same *** particular,the Q and P schemes exhibited nearly the same *** the simulation based on observations from the Ocean Weather Station Papa,the HQ scheme exhibited the best performance,followed by the Q *** the experiment with the HQ scheme,the root-mean-square deviation of the simulated SST from the observations was 0.43℃,and the mixed layer depth(mLD)was 2.0 *** a contrast,the deviations of the SST and mLD reached 1.25℃ and 8.4 m,respectively,in the experiment without wave-induced mixing.

The overabundance of the red and massive candidate galaxies observed by the james Webb Space Telescope(jWST)implies efficient structure formation or large star formation efficiency at high redshift z~*** the scenario of a low or moderate star formation efficiency,because massive neutrinos tend to suppress the growth of structure of the universe,the jWST observation tightens the upper bound of the neutrino *** A cold dark matter cosmology and a star formation efficiency∈[0.05,0.3](flat prior),we perform.j.int analyses of Planck+jWST and Planck+BAO+jWST,and obtain improved constraints∑m_(ν)m_(ν)+mptions,the inverted mass ordering,which implies ∑m_(ν)≥0.1 eV,is excluded by Planck+BAO+jWST at 92.7% confidence level.

Facile synthesis of high-brightness green-emitting carbon dots with narrow bandwidth towards backlight display

High-performance carbon dots(CDs)allowing the application in high-end display devices are highly desirable and usually limited by the absence of simple and easy synthesis *** this work,we exploited an easy-to-implement strategy for the one-step synthesis of green-emitting CDs(G-CDs)with superb optical *** G-CDs were synthesized using m-phenylenediamine(m-PD)as a single precursor,and the reaction reacted at 180℃for 12 h The resultant G-CDs exhibit high-purity and excitationindependent green fluorescence with the photoluminescence(PL)peak located at 516 nm,full width at half maximum(FWHm)of 46 nm,and PL quantum yield(QY)of∼80%under the 470nm excitation *** G-CDs and corresponding composite film prepared with polyvinyl butyral(G-CDs@PVB)exhibit good PL stability after undergoing long-time storage for one year and 360 h exposure under 460nm blue *** G-CDs@PVB film was used as color-conversion materials in green-emitting light-emitting diode(LED)application,exhibiting a Commission internationale de l’Eclairage(CIE)chromaticity coordinate of(0.21,0.44).The film was also used in CD-based liquid crystal display(CD-LCD)application,achieving a color gamut value of 85%.This work will offer a working basis for the synthesis of high-performance CDs as well as their application in displays.

Aerial refueling scheduling of multi-receiver and multi-tanker under spatial-temporal constraints for forest firefighting

Forest fires pose a significant threat to human life and property,so the utilization of unmanned aircraft systems provides new ways for forest *** the constrained load capacities of these aircraft,aerial refueling becomes crucial to extend their operational time and *** order to address the complexities of firefighting missions involving multi-receiver and multi-tanker deployed from various airports,first,a fuel consumption calculation model for aerial refueling scheduling is established based on the receiver ***,two distinct methods,including an integrated one and a decomposed one,are designed to address the challenges of establishing refueling airspace and allocating tasks for *** methods aim to optimize total fuel consumption of the receivers and tankers within the aerial refueling scheduling *** optimization problem is established as nonlinear optimization models along with *** integrated method seamlessly combines refueling rendezvous point scheduling and tanker task allocation into unified *** has a complete solution space and excels in optimizing total fuel *** decomposed method,through the separation of rendezvous point scheduling and task allocation,achieves a reduced computational ***,this comes at the cost of sacrificing optimality by excluding specific feasible ***,numerical simulations are carried out to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed *** simulations yield insights crucial for the practical engineering application of both the integrated and decomposed methods in real-world *** comprehensive approach aims to enhance the efficiency of forest firefighting operations,mitigating the risks posed by forest fires to human life and property.
