Gene-activated matrix(GAm)has a potential usefulness in bone engineering as an alternate strategy for the lasting release of osteogenic proteins but efficient methods to generate non-viral GAm remain to be *** this study,we investigated whether an atelocollagen-based GAm containing naked-plasmid(p)DNAs encoding microRNA(miR)20a,which may promote osteogenesis in vivo via multiple pathways associated with the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells(mSCs),facilitates rat cranial bone ***,we confirmed the osteoblastic differentiation functions of generated pDNA encoding miR20a(pmiR20a)in vitro,and its transfection regulated the expression of several of target genes,such as Bambi1 and PPARc,in rat bone marrow mSCs and induced the increased expression of ***,when GAms fabricated by mixing 100 ll of 2%bovine atelocollagen,20mg b-TCP granules and 0.5mg(3.3 lg/ll)AcGFP plasmid-vectors encoding miR20a were transplanted to rat cranial bone surface,the promoted vertical bone augmentation was clearly recognized up to 8 weeks after transplantation,as were upregulation of VEGFs and BmP4 expressions at the early stages of ***,GAm-based miR delivery may provide an alternative non-viral approach by improving transgene efficacy via a small sequence that can regulate the multiple pathways.

The Impact of Orographically-Induced Gravity Waves on the Diurnal Cycle of Rainfall over Southeast Kalimantan Island

Precipitation measurements from the Tropical Rainfall measuring mission (TRmm) satellite indicate that the southeastern area of Kalimantan (Borneo) Island receives much less rainfall than elsewhere on the island during the period from July to *** from sur-face meteorological observations show that the diurnal cycle of rainfall differs greatly between the eastern and western coasts of the *** on the western coast of the island is frequent in the afternoon and evening,whereas almost all rainfall on the eastern coast occurs in the ***,the Global Positioning System (GPS)-derived precipitable water (PW) on the eastern coast shows a substantial decrease in moisture in the af-ternoon and *** experiments with a mesoscale model reveal that gravity waves driven by di-urnal heating of the elevated land surface of the moun-tains on Sulawesi Island,which lies approximately 300 kilometers to the east of Kalimantan Island,significantly affect the diurnal cycle of rainfall over southeast Kali-mantan Island.

Dear Editor,most of the plant hormones found in flowering plants contribute to growth regulation in the moss Physcomitrella patens. This moss does not produce gibberellin （GA）（Figure 1A）. An ent-kaurene synthase （PpCPS/KS） and an ent-kaurene oxidase （PpKO） have been identified in P. patens, but in contrast to flowering plants, P. patens has no ent-kaurenoic acid oxidase （KAO） homologs （Hayashi et al., 2010; miyazaki et al., 2011, Fiqure 1A）.

macrophage colony-stimulating factor expressed in non-cancer tissues provides predictive powers for recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma

AIm To investigate the role of macrophage colony-stimulating factor(m-CSF) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) after surgery. mETHODS Expression of m-CSF, distribution of m2 macrophages(mφs), and angiogenesis were assessed in the liver, including tumors and peritumoral liver tissues. The prognostic power of these factors was assessed. mouse isolated hepatic mφs or monocytes were cultured with media containing m-CSF. The concentration of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in media was assessed. Furthermore, the role of the m-CSF-matured hepatic mφs on proliferation of the vascular endothelial cell(VEC) was investigated. RESULTS A strong correlation between the expressions of m-CSF and CD163 was observed in the peritumoral area. Also, groups with high density of m-CSF, CD163 or CD31 showed a significantly shorter time to recurrence(TTR) than low density groups. multivariate analysis revealedthe expression of m-CSF or hepatic m2mφs in the peritumoral area as the most crucial factor responsible for shorter TTR. moreover, the expression of m-CSF and hepatic m2mφs in the peritumoral area had better predictable power of overall survival. Values of VEGF in culture media were significantly greater in the hepatic mφs compared with the monocytes. Proliferation of the VEC was greatest in the cells co-cultured with hepatic mφs when m-CSF was present in *** m-CSF increases hepatocarcinogenesis, most likely by enhancing an angiogenic factor derived from hepatic mφ and could be a useful target for therapy against HCC.

Association between Systolic Blood Pressure Difference ≥10 mm Hg and Ankle-Brachial Index

Background: In new outpatients, blood pressure should be measured in both arms. A previous study reported that an inter-arm systolic blood pressure difference (ΔSBP) of ≥10 mm Hg is associated with an increased risk of mortality. Aim: The aim was to identify the associations with absolute values of ΔSBP (|ΔSBP|) ≥10 mm Hg. Subjects and methods: This study included 2481 patients. Patients with a body mass index ≥25 kg/m2 were defined as obese. The group of A was defined as following: ankle-brachial index (ABI) was m BP minus left arm BP. |ΔSBP| ≥10 mm Hg were analyzed using multivariate logistic analysis. Results: |ΔSBP| ≥10 mm Hg was found in 6.0% of patients and |ΔSBP| mm Hg in 80.4%. In multivariate analysis, the odds ratios (ORs) of the associations with |ΔSBP| ≥10 mm Hg were significantly associated with abnormal ABI and obesity regardless of sex and age. moreover, the OR of the combined effects of abnormal ABI and obesity was higher than that of abnormal ABI and obesity alone. Conclusion: |ΔSBP| ≥10 mm Hg was associated with abnormal ABI and obesity. In a primary care setting, blood pressure should be actively measured in both arms. This study suggests that the associations with |ΔSBP| ≥10 mm Hg may be a useful part of screening for abnormal ABI.

Dear editor,The current treatment strategy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC)patients harboring epider-mal growth factor receptor(EGFR)mutations involves EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors(EGFR-TKIs).Several reports on EGFR-TKI resistance have shown that the T790m mutation within the EGFR gene is present in approximately half of the patients who develop resist-ance to a first-or second-generation EGFR-TKI[1,2].In Japan,osimertinib monotherapy is the standard therapy for patients harboring the EGFR T790m mutation arising after the development of resistance to a first-or second-generation EGFR-TKI[3,4].Herein,we report the case of a patient who underwent four tumor biopsies over the treatment *** no detection of this mutation after developing resistance to the first-line EGFR-TKI,in the fourth biopsy specimen,which was collected after progression following EGFR-TKI re-challenge,EGFR T790m mutation was detected using the cobas®EGFR mutation test(Roche molecular Systems,Pleasanton,CA,USA).Additionally,we analyzed the T790m allele frequency(AF)in longitudinal biopsy samples obtained at four different time points using droplet digital PCR(ddPCR)(PrimePCR™,Bio-Rad Laboratories,Inc.,Her-cules,CA,USA).We discuss the clinical usefulness of longitudinal assessment of the EGFR T790m AF,espe-cially for deciding the appropriate treatment(e.g.,osi-mertinib)in patients with EGFR mutations.

In this paper, theeffect of the initial concentrationof nitric acidon the soluble-insoluble self-oscillation for a novel polymer chainwith nonthermoresponsive nature was investigated. The self-oscillationoccurs induced by the Belousov-Zhabotinsky（BZ） reaction. In the condition of [HNO3] = 0.1 m, no transmittance self-oscillation occurs. In addition, in thecondition of [HNO3] = 0.2 m, the life-time of the self-oscillation is significantly short. This is because the solution p H much affects the BZ reaction. moreover, we demonstrated that the period of the transmittance self-oscillation decreases with the increase in the temperaturein accordance with the Arrenius equation.

Effect of Nutrition Education Using Self-monitoring of Blood Glucose (SmBG) on Glycemic Control in Non-Insulin-Treated Obese Type 2 Diabetes Patients

The effect of nutrition education using self-monitoring of blood glucose on glycemic control was investigated in the present study. Of 36 males and 25 females aged 30 - 69 years under outpatient treatment at 3 hospitals in Niigata prefecture, Japan, 61 non-insulin-treated obese type 2 diabetes patients with HbA1c of 6.9% - 9.3% and body mass index of 25 kg/m2 or higher were randomly allocated. Thirty and 31 patients were analyzed in intervention and control groups, respectively. The intervention group performed self-monitoring of blood glucose 2 hours after supper twice a week for 6 months and underwent nutrition education on the association between meals and postprandial blood glucose once every 2 months. The primary outcome was glycated hemoglobin, with the secondary outcome of body mass index. Stages of change for eating the appropriate supper amount were investigated to verify the process of the educational effect, and satisfaction with diabetes treatment and well-being were investigated to verify the continuity of treatment. On intention-to-treat analysis, glycated hemoglobin (mean ± SD) decreased from 7.9% ± 0.6% to 7.7% ± 0.6% in the intervention group but increased from 7.9% ± 0.6% to 8.1% ± 0.6% in the control group, showing a significant difference in the change after intervention between the groups (p = 0.027). In the intervention group, body mass index decreased from 28.9 ± 3.8 to 28.4 ± 3.7 kg/m2 (p = 0.019), the stages of change to learn the appropriate amount of supper progressed (p = 0.026), and satisfaction with diabetes treatment increased (p = 0.031).
