Troglitazone, a member of the insulin-sensitizing thiazolidinediones, was shown to suppress voltage-dependent L-type calcium currents (ICa, L) in vascular smooth muscle cells. The present study was aimed to investigate whether troglitazone may inhibit ICa, L in rat cardiac ventricular myocytes and whether the extent of troglitazone-induced inhibition of the current may be different between normal and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Whole-cell patch-clamp techniques were applied in single rat ventricular myocytes. Troglitazone reduced the amplitude of ICa, L in a concentration-dependent manner in both normal and diabetic myocytes. However, the percent inhibition of ICa, L by troglitazone in concentration of 10-5mol/L measured at a holding potential of -50 mV was significantly greater in myocytes isolated from STZ-induced diabetic rats than in control rats (87%±8% vs 47%±5%, P＜0.005), without difference in voltage-dependency of the inhibition. These findings demonstrate that troglitazone-induced inhibition of ICa, L is augmented in STZ-induced diabetic cardiac ventricular myocytes, thus possibly playing a role in preventing intracellular calcium overload.

mineral sulphide （mS）-lime （CaO） ion exchange reactions （mS ＋ CaO = mO ＋ CaS） and the effect of CaO/C mole ratio during carbothermic reduction （mS ＋ CaO ＋ C = m ＋ CaS ＋ CO（g）） were investigated for complex froth flotation mineral sulphide concentrates. Phases in the partially and fully reacted samples were characterised by X-ray diffraction （XRD） and scanning electron microscopy （SEm）. The primary phases during mineral sulphide-lime ion exchange reactions are Fe304, CaSO4 Cu2S, and CaS. A complex liquid phase of Ca2CuFeO3S forms during mineral sulphide-lime exchange reactions above 1173 K. The formation mechanisms of Ca2CuFeO3S liquid phase are determined by characterising the partially reacted samples. The reduction rate and extent of mineral sulphides in the presence of CaO and C increase with the increase in CaO/C ratio. The metallic phases are surrounded by the CaS rich phase at CaO/C 〉 1, but the metallic phases and CaS are found as separate phases at CaO/C 〈 1. Experimental results show that the stoichiometric ratio of carbon should be slightly higher than that of CaO. The reactions between CaO and gangue minerals （SiO2 and A1203） are only observed at CaO/C 〉 1 and the reacted samples are excessively sintered.

Wheat grown under rain-fed conditions is often affected by drought worldwide. Future projections from a climate simulation model predict that the combined effects of increasing temperature and changing rainfall patterns will aggravate this drought scenario and may significantly reduce wheat yields unless appropriate varieties are adopted. Wheat is adapted to a wide range of environments due to the diversity in its phenology genes. Wheat phenology offers the opportunity to fight against drought by modifying crop developmental phases according to water availability in target environments. This review summa- rizes recent advances in wheat phenology research, including vernalization （Vrn）, photoperiod （Ppd）, and also dwarfing （Rht） genes. The alleles, haplotypes, and copy number variation identified for Vrn and Ppd genes respond differently in different climatic conditions, and thus could alter not only the development phases but also the yield. Compared with the model plant Arabidopsis, more phenology genes have not yet been identified in wheat; quantifying their effects in target environments would benefit the breeding of wheat for improved drought tolerance. Hence, there is scope to maximize yields in water-limited envi-ronments by deploying appropriate phenology gene combinations along with Rht genes and other important physiological traits that are associated with drought resistance.

The first record of Ophioleila elegans (Echinodermata:Ophiuroidea) from a deep-sea seamount in the Northwest Pacific Ocean

The rare ophiuroid species, Ophioleila elegans, was collected by the submersible Jiaolongfrom 1 660 m depth on the Caiwei Guyot located in the magellan Seamount Chain in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. This is the first published record of this species since the types were described from similar habitat off Hawaii. We provide more detailed morphologic characteristics of arm skeleton and a phylogenetic analysis based on CO 1 sequences. Both morphology and phylogeny results suggest that the genus Ophioleila is more closely related to Ophiactids than Hemieuryalids.
