Background: Evidence regarding the effectiveness of prenatal nutritional supplements has mainly considered anthropometric pregnancy outcomes. The effect on markers of health and disease， such as offspring telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial DNA content (mtDNAc) is unknown. Objectives: We assessed the efficacy of maternal multiple micronutrient (mmN)-fortified balanced-energy protein (BEP) and iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation on newborn TL as a secondary outcome and mtDNAc as a non-declared outcome. Design: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in rural Burkina Faso， among pregnant females (15-40 years old) enrolled at mothers received either mmN-fortified BEP and IFA (intervention) or IFA only (control) throughout pregnancy. Whole arterial blood samples were collected from the umbilical cord of 104 control and 90 intervention group infants， respectively. Average relative TL and mtDNAc were measured using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Linear regression models were fitted to assess TL and mtDNAc differences across trial arms. Results: We found that a combined daily mmN-fortified BEP supplement and IFA tablet did not affect newborn TL [β = -0.010 (95% CI: -0.057， 0.036); P = 0.662] or mtDNAc [β = 0.065 (95% CI: -0.203， 0.073); P = 0.354]， as compared to an IFA tablet alone. These findings were confirmed (P > 0.05) by adjusting the regression models for potential prognostic factors of study outcomes at enrollment. Exploratory analyses indicated higher， but non-significantly different mtDNAc among children born either small-for-gestational age， low birthweight， or preterm. Conclusions: Newborns from mothers who received daily nutritional supplements across gestation did not have different relative TL or mtDNAc.

This paper addresses the challenges of System-on-Chip designs using High-Level Synthesis (HLS). HLS tools convert algorithms designed in C into hardware modules. This approach is a practical choice for developing complex applications. Nevertheless, certain hardware considerations are required when writing C applications for HLS tools. Hence, in order to demonstrate the fundamental hardware design concepts, a case studyis presented. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) implementation in ANSI C is examined in order to explore the important design issues such as concurrency, data recurrences and memory accesses that need to be resolved before generating the hardware using HLS tools. There are additional language constraints that need to be addressed including use of pointers, recursion and floating point types.

Background-Subjects with type 2 diabetes have smaller LDL and HDL particles in addition to higher levels of triglycerides and lower HDL cholesterol. Elevated insulin resistance, blood pressure, and dyslipidemia(including small dense LDL) predicted incident diabetes. In the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study(IRAS) we studied nuclear magnetic resonance(NmR) lipoprotein particle measures in prediabetic individuals, considering potentially modifying covariates, including insulin resistance, as directly measured using a frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test. methods and Results-Of 830 subjects who were nondiabetic at baseline, 130(15.7%) developed diabetes after a mean followup of 5.2 years. Various lipoprotein abnormalities were found in prediabetic subjects compared with subjects who stayed nondiabetic at follow-up. In logistic regression analyses(demographically adjusted), VLDL particles, large VLDL, LDL particles, small LDL, large HDL, small HDL, VLDL size, LDL size, and HDL size were related to incident diabetes. The relation of VLDL size and small HDL to incident diabetes was independent of waist(odds ratio OR 95%CI , 1.43 1.18 to 1.73 and 1.23 1.01 to 1.51 for VLDL size and small HDL, respectively) and independent of conventionally(chemically)measured triglycerides and HDL cholesterol(OR 95%CI , 1.45 1.18 to 1.78 and 1.30 1.06 to 1.60 , respectively). Insulin sensitivity attenuated the relation to incident diabetes of VLDL size(OR 95%CI , 1.25 1.01 to 1.53 ) but not of small HDL particles(OR 95%CI , 1.25 1.02 to 1.54 ). Conclusions-We have shown a range of lipoprotein abnormalities in prediabetic individuals, including compositional changes in HDL and VLDL. These findings extend previous work indicating a proatherogenic state in healthy, nondiabetic subjects who subsequently develop diabetes.
