In Vitro-Propagation of Agave tequilana Weber cv.azul in a Temporary Immersion System

In mexico,there is a need to produce large quantities of plantlets for the establishment and replanting of blue(cv.azul)agave production areas.most of these plots are within the origin denomination area(DOT,Spanish acronym)of the distilled product of this plant,known as tequila.The objective of this study was to develop an in vitropropagation protocol for Agave tequilana Weber cv.azul using segmented stems in both:solid and liquid media.A disinfection and in vitro technique were developed to obtain shoots,through plantlets collected in commercial plots,which attained 100%surface-disinfection and budding rate.At the multiplication stage,the effects of 6-Benzylaminopurine(BA)(0.0,4.4 and 13.2μm)and kinetin(0.0,9.4,18.8 and 37.6μm)were evaluated on lateralshoot production of segmented sagittal stems.These were cultivated on murashige&Skoog(mS)medium,with the addition of 3.0%sucrose and 8 g L−1 agar.It was observed that BA and kinetin increased the number of shoots per explant,obtaining up to 18 and 26,respectively.Furthermore,it was found that just the sagittal segmentation of explants increased axillary budding.On the other hand,segmented-stem bases were grown in mS liquid medium with 3.0%sucrose,inside a RITAsystem,programmed by a 5 min immersion step with a frequency of every 4 h.The effect of Indole−3-Acetic acid(IAA)(0.57,2.9,5.7μm)was evaluated,while maintaining a concentration of BA(13.2μm).It was observed that the greatest concentration of IAA led to the formation of more than 20 buds per explant.These results offer a new methodology to increase the efficiency of A.tequilana Weber cv.azul-in vitro multiplication by sagittal segmentation of stems and the addition of BA and/or IAA.

Estimation of Equivalent model of Photovoltaic Array Using Unscented Kalman Filters

This paper proposes the use of the unscented Kalman filter to estimate the equivalent model of a photovoltaic(PV) array, using external measurements of current and voltage at the inverter level. The estimated model is of interest to predict the power output of PV plants, in both planning and operation scenarios, and thus improves the efficient operation of power systems with high penetration of renewable energy. The proposed technique has been assessed in several simulated scenarios under different operating conditions. The results show that accurate estimates are provided for the model parameters, even in the presence of measurement noise and abrupt variations under the external conditions.

High CO_(2)permeation using a new Ce_(0.85)gd_(0.15)O_(2-δ)-LaNiO_(3)composite ceramic–carbonate dual-phase membrane

This work shows the synthesis,characterization and evaluation of dense-ceramic membranes made of Ce_(0.85)gd_(0.15)O_(2-δ)-LaNiO_(3)(Cg-LN)composites,where the fluorite-perovskite ratio(Cg:LN)was varied as follows:75:25,80:20 and 85:15 wt.%.Supports were initially characterized by XRD,SEm and electrical conductivity(using vacuum and oxygen atmospheres),to determine the composition,microstructural and ionic-electronic conductivity properties.Later,supports were infiltrated with an eutectic carbonates mixture,producing the corresponding dense dual-phase membranes,in which CO_(2)permeation tests were conducted.Here,CO_(2)permeation experiments were performed from 900 to 700℃,in the presence and absence of oxygen(flowed in the sweep membrane side).Results showed that these composites possess high CO_(2)permeation properties,where the O_(2)addition significantly improves the ionic conduction on the sweep membrane side.Specifically,the gC80-LN20 composition presented the best results due to the following physicochemical characteristics:high electronic and ionic conductivity,appropriate porosity,interconnected porous channels,as well as thermal and chemical stabilities between the composite support and carbonate phases.

Hydroxyapatite composites with carbon allotropes:Preparation,properties,and applications

Hydroxyapatite(HA)and its composites with inorganic additives,dopants,and polymers is a rapidly developing branch in the materials chemistry.In particular,carbon allotropes are widely used in these composites being widely applied for medical purposes.Observing a gap of insufficient generalization of recent achievements in the field of the HA/Carbon composites,in this review we present the state of the art of the field of HA composites and hybrids with classic carbon allotropes and nanocarbons.These composites are known for carbon nanotubes,nanofibers,graphene and its oxidized forms,as well as,in a lesser grade,for graphite,fullerenes,nanodiamonds,carbon nanofoams,etc.These composites can be fabricated by a variety of classic and less-common methods,such as co-precipitation(with or without ultrasonic treatment),CVD,hot isostatic pressing,hydrothermal,spark plasma sintering,biomimetic mineralization,thermal and plasma spray,electrochemical and electrophoretic deposition,self-assembling,3D printing,electrospinning,and lyophilisation,among others.Combination of various synthesis techniques can be also carried out for composite preparation.Natural or synthetic HA can be used as it is for further interaction with carbon allotropes or it can be first prepared and then reacted with carbon counterpart;similarly,carbon allotropes can be introduced into the interaction with HA directly or they can be first synthesized,in particular from biomass.Resulting biocompatible composites can be produced in the form of coatings,powders,and scaffolds and can additionally contain quantitative amounts of third phases,frequently natural or synthetic polymers.In these composites,especially with O-containing functionalizing groups,HA disadvantages could be considerably decreased with simultaneous enhancement of mechanical properties,becoming similar to human bone,chemical stability and biocompatibility,as well as possessing antibacterial effect.gO→g reduction and higher HA decoration were observed in several experiments.The morphology of p

Laser‑Induced and mOF‑Derived metal Oxide/Carbon Composite for Synergistically Improved Ethanol Sensing at Room temperature

Advancements in sensor technology have significantly enhanced atmospheric monitoring.Notably,metal oxide and carbon(mO_(x)/C)hybrids have gained attention for their exceptional sensitivity and room-temperature sensing performance.However,previous methods of synthesizing mO_(x)/C composites suffer from problems,including inhom.geneity,aggregation,and challenges in micropatterning.Herein,we introduce a refined method that employs a metal–organic framework(mOF)as a precursor combined with direct laser writing.The inherent structure of mOFs ensures a uniform distribution of metal ions and organic linkers,yielding hom.geneous mO_(x)/C structures.The laser processing facilitates precise micropatterning(m,comparable to typical photolithography)of the mO_(x)/C crystals.The optimized mOF-derived mO_(x)/C sensor rapidly detected ethanol gas even at room temperature(105 and 18 s for response and recovery,respectively),with a broad range of sensing performance from 170 to 3,400 ppm and a high response value of up to 3,500%.Additionally,this sensor exhibited enhanced stability and thermal resilience compared to previous mOF-based counterparts.This research opens up promising avenues for practical applications in mOF-derived sensing devices.

Low-power SiPm readout BETA ASIC for space applications

The BETA application-specific integrated circuit(ASIC)is a fully programmable chip designed to amplify,shape and digitize the signal of up to 64 Silicon photomultiplier(SiPm)channels,with a power consumption of approximately~1 mW/channel.Owing to its dual-path gain,the BETA chip is capable of resolving single photoelectrons(phes)with a signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)>5 while simultaneously achieving a dynamic range of~4000 phes.Thus,BETA can provide a cost-effective solution for the readout of SiPms in space missions and other applications with a maximum rate below 10 kHz.In this study,we describe the key characteristics of the BETA ASIC and present an evaluation of the performance of its 16-channel version,which is implemented using 130 nm technology.The ASIC also contains two discriminators that can provide trigger signals with a time jitter down to 400 ps FWHm for 10 phes.The linearity error of the charge gain measurement was less than 2%for a dynamic range as large as 15 bits.

A converged ubiquitin-proteasome pathway for the degradation of TOC and TOm tail-anchored receptors

In plants,thousands of nucleus-encoded proteins translated in the cytosol are sorted to chloroplasts and mitochondria by binding to specific receptors of the TOC(translocon on the outer chloroplast membrane)and the TOm(translocon on the outer mitochondrial membrane)complexes for import into those organelles.The degradation pathways for these receptors are unclear.Here,we discovered a converged ubiquitin-proteasome pathway for the degradation of Arabidopsis thaliana TOC and TOm tail-anchored receptors.The receptors are ubiquitinated by E3 ligase(s)and pulled from the outer membranes by the AAA+adenosine triphosphatase CDC48,after which a previously uncharacterized cytosolic protein,transmembrane domain(TmD)-binding protein for tail-anchored outer membrane proteins(TTOP),binds to the exposed TmDs at the C termini of the receptors and CDC48,and delivers these complexes to the 26S proteasome.

Control system design for a pressure-tube-type supercritical water-cooled nuclear reactor via a higher order sliding mode method

Nuclear power plants exhibit non-linear and time-variable dynamics.Therefore,designing a control system that sets the reactor power and forces it to follow the desired load is complicated.A supercritical water reactor(SCWR)is a fourth-generation conceptual reactor.In an SCWR,the non-linear dynamics of the reactor require a controller capable of control-ling the nonlinearities.In this study,a pressure-tube-type SCWR was controlled during reactor power maneuvering with a higher order sliding mode,and the reactor outgoing steam temperature and pressure were controlled simultaneously.In an SCWR,the temperature,pressure,and power must be maintained at a setpoint(desired value)during power maneuvering.Reactor point kinetics equations with three groups of delayed neutrons were used in the simulation.Higher-order and classic sliding mode controllers were separately manufactured to control the plant and were compared with the PI controllers speci-fied in previous studies.The controlled parameters were reactor power,steam temperature,and pressure.Notably,for these parameters,the PI controller had certain instabilities in the presence of disturbances.The classic sliding mode controller had a higher accuracy and stability;however its main drawback was the chattering phenomenon.HOSmC was highly accurate and stable and had a small computational cost.In reality,it followed the desired values without oscillations and chattering.

A flexible,thin-film microchannel electrode array device for selective subdiaphragmatic vagus nerve recording

The vagus nerve(VN)plays an important role in regulating physiological conditions in the gastrointestinal(gI)tract by communicating via the parasympathetic pathway to the enteric nervous system(ENS).However,the lack of knowledge in the neurophysiology of the VN and gI tract limits the development of advanced treatments for autonomic dysfunctions related to the VN.To better understand the complicated underlying mechanisms of the VN-gI tract neurophysiology,it is necessary to use an advanced device enabled by microfabrication technologies.Among several candidates including intraneural probe array and extraneural cuff electrodes,microchannel electrode array devices can be used to interface with smaller numbers of nerve fibers by securing them in the separate channel structures.Previous microchannel electrode array devices to interface teased nerve structures are relatively bulky with thickness around 200µm.The thick design can potentially harm the delicate tissue structures,including the nerve itself.In this paper,we present a flexible thin film based microchannel electrode array device(thickness:11.5µm)that can interface with one of the subdiaphragmatic nerve branches of the VN in a rat.We demonstrated recording evoked compound action potentials(ECAP)from a transected nerve ending that has multiple nerve fibers.moreover,our analysis confirmed that the signals are from C-fibers that are critical in regulating autonomic neurophysiology in the gI tract.

Periodontitis:An often-neglected complication of diabetes

The bidirectional association between type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2Dm)and periodontitis is now well established,resulting in periodontal disease being considered as the 6th major complication of diabetes mellitus(Dm)after cardiovascular disease,eye disease,neuropathy,nephropathy,and peripheral vascular disease.Dm can worsen the virulence and invasiveness of pathogenic oral microbial flora aggravating the local inflammation and infection in those with periodontal disease.On the other hand,the chemical and immunological mediators released into the circulation as part of periodontal inflammation worsen the systemic insulin resistance with worsening of T2Dm.Periodontitis if undiagnosed or left untreated can also result in eventual tooth loss.A study by Xu et al in the World Journal of Diabetes examined the predictive factors associated with periodontitis in Chinese patients with T2Dm.The prevalence of periodontitis was found to be 75.7%in this study.Based on logistic regression analysis,the predictive factors for higher risk were low tooth brushing frequency[odds ratio(OR)=4.3],high triglycerides(Tg;OR=3.31),high total cholesterol(TC;OR=2.87),higher glycated hem.globin(HbA1c;OR=2.55),and higher age(OR=1.05)while higher education level was protective(OR=0.53).However,the most influential variables were HbA1c followed by age,TC,Tg,low education level,brushing frequency,and sex on the random forest model(this model showed higher sensitivity for predicting the risk).A good understanding of the predictors for periodontitis in T2Dm patients is important in prevention,early detection of susceptible patients,and intervention to improve periodontal health and enable long-term.glycaemic control as observed by Xu et al.
