Evaluation of pan coefficient equations in a semi-arid mediterranean environment using the ASCE-standardized Penman-monteith method

reference crop evapotranspiration (ETo) is essential for irrigation, water resources management and environmental assessment. The indirect estimation of ETo is based a) on energy budget approach using meteorological data and b) pan evaporation measurements (Epan) multiplied by pan coefficients (kp) adapted to the surrounding environmental conditions. Significant interest is shown for the kp equations, which have to be tested before their use. The purpose of this study is to evaluate six different kp equations, such as those of Cuenca, Allen and Puitt, Snyder, pereira et al., Orang, raghuwanshi and Wallender for the summer growing season (April to October) of Thessaloniki plain in Greece, which is characterized by a semi-arid mediterranean environment. The evaluation of the kp equations is performed by two years Epan measurements, using as reference the daily ETo values estimated by the ASCE-standardized Penman-monteith equation (ASCE-Pm) in hourly time step. The results of this study showed that Cuenca’s equation provided more accurate daily estimations. Additional analysis is performed in other methods such as those of FAO-56 and Hargreaves based on the calculation time step (hourly or daily) and their correspondence to the ASCE-Pm.

Four types of wave to runup transition processes were examined by using a high speed video camera capable of capturing 490 frames per *** present investigation was set out to capture the missing details reported in previous study using only 30 frames per second recording *** examining the wave to runup transition processes of different incoming waves with offshore Froude number ranging from 1.08 to 1.49,it was found that the main features of the four types of transition process were consistent to those described in [1].The non-overturning process of the upper part of the wave front occurring in the collapsing type was *** water indeed shot out from the bottom to initiate the runup process on the dry ***,observations in the present study also suggested that there could be an in-between transition mode existing between the plunging type and collapsing type;*** upper part of the wave front may overturn onto the shotout wave toe before touching the dry *** research is recommended.

Lymphomas are neoplastic transformations that affect lymphoid cells. Diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma has a high degree of cell proliferation, accounting for 30% of all lymphomas. Lung cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide and the recommended treatment is chemotherapy. Among the main complications resulting from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, lung cancer and chemotherapy used in their treatment, we can mention sepsis, acute kidney injury and febrile neutropenia. Febrile neutropenia can occur by suppressing the production of neutrophils. Sepsis, a widespread infection, is the main cause of acute kidney injury, which can also be caused by hydroelectrolytic complications or by nephrotoxicity. This is a report of a smoking patient with metastatic lung cancer who sought care due to progressive dysphagia, cough with chest pain, fever, and lower airways critical obstruction due to mediastinal lymphadenopathy, being diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The patient evolved to death because of a significant worsening of the ventilatory pattern of multifactorial cause, mainly due to sepsis, acute kidney injury, and febrile neutropenia. The patient had mostly classic characteristics of her comorbidities, however, the overlapping of interrelated comorbidities led to the outcome of death. What is unusual about the present case report is that the patient’s characteristics, such as age, sex, and ethnicity, are opposite to those described as risk factors for diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Context: Weight loss elicits physiological adaptations relating to energy inta ke and expenditure that antagonize ongoing weight loss. Objective: To test wheth er dietary composition affects the physiological adaptations to weight loss, as assessed by resting energy expenditure. Design, Study, and Participants: A rando mized paralleldesign study of 39 over-weight or obese young adults aged 18 to 4 0 years who received an energy-restricted diet, either low-glycemic load or lo w-fat. Participants were studied in the General Clinical research Centers of th e Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Children’s Hospital, Boston, mass, befo re and after 10%weightless. The study was conducted from January 4,2001, to may 6, 2003. main Outcome measures: resting energy expenditure measured in the fast ing state by indirect calorimetry, body composition by dual-energy X-ray absor ptiometry, cardiovascular disease risk factors, and self-reported hunger. resul ts: resting energy expenditure decreased less with the low-glycemic load diet t han with the low-fat diet, expressed in absolute terms(mean[SE], 96 [24] vs 176 [27] kcal/d; P=.04) or as a proportion(5.9%[1.5%] vs 10.6%[1.7%]; P=.05). Pa rticipants receiving the low-glycemic load diet reported less hunger than those receiving the low-fat diet(P=.04). Insulin resistance(P=.01), serum triglyceri des(P=.01), C-reac-tive protein(P=.03), and blood pressure(P=.07 for both syst olic and diastolic) improved more with the low-gly-cemic load diet. Changes in body composition (fat and lean mass) in both groups were very similar(P=.85 and P=.45, respectively). Conclusions: Changes in dietary composition within prevai ling norms can affect physiological adaptations that defend body weight. reducti on in glycemic load may aid in the prevention or treatment of obesity, cardiovas cular disease, and diabetes mellitus.

Patients with decompensated hepatic cirrhosis may present systemic alterations and dysfunction of multiple organs. Ascites, portal hypertension, esophageal varices, and hepatic encephalopathy are common complications arising from cirrhosis. The aim of this paper is to report a case of a patient with liver cirrhosis and the complications of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt. Male, elderly, and ex-alcoholic, diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, ascites, and esophageal varices. He underwent transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt due to portal hypertension and returned to the hospital after 24 hours with agitation and mental confusion. He had a bowel movement stop, neurological worsening, loss of renal function, hepatic hydrothorax, hepatic encephalopathy, hypernatremia, hypocalcemia, and hypophosphatemia. He underwent a new procedure to occlude the transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, showing improvement of the mental status and ascites. However, continued with decompensation and hydro-electrolytic disorders. He evolved with worsening of the ventilatory pattern, and neurological and renal function, with a fatal outcome. mily:Verdana;">Esophageal varices due to portal hypertension can be corrected with the transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt. However, complications such as hypernatremia, hepatic hydrothorax, and hepatic encephalopathy may occur. Therefore, there is a need for reintervention to shunt or reduce its caliber. Thus, for patients with advanced age and decompensated cirrhosis, the potential risks and benefits of this procedure should be carefully evaluated due to the risk of complications and death.
