Immobilisation of electrochemically active bacteria on screen-printed electrodes for rapid in situ toxicity biosensing

are time-consuming and not sensitive enough.However,bacteria typically connect to electrodes through biofilm formation,leading to problems due to lack of uniformity or long device production times.A suitable immobilisation technique can overcome these challenges.Still,they may respond more slowly than biofilm-based electrodes because bacteria gradually adapt to electron transfer during biofilm formation.In this study,we propose a controlled and reproducible way to fabricate bacteria-modified electrodes.The method consists of an immobilisation step using a cellulose matrix,followed by an electrode polarization in the presence of ferricyanide and glucose.Our process is short,reproducible and led us to obtain ready-to-use electrodes featuring a high-current response.An excellent shelf-life of the immobilised electrochemically active bacteria was demonstrated for up to one year.After an initial 50% activity loss in the first month,no further declines have been observed over the following 11 months.We implemented our bacteria-modified electrodes to fabricate a lateral flow platform for toxicity monitoring using formaldehyde(3%).Its addition led to a 59% current decrease approximately 20 min after the toxic input.The methods presented here offer the ability to develop a high sensitivity,easy to produce,and long shelf life bacteria-based toxicity detectors.

The role of rhizobacteria in rice plants: Growth and mitigation of toxicity

Allelopathic compounds reduce the growth and productivity of upland rice plants, especially in consecutive plantations. The rhizobacteria Pseudomonas fluorescens BRm-32111 and Burkholderia pyrrocinia BRm-32113 have been recorded as growth promoters in rice. This study was developed to understand the effect of the application of rhizobacteria on upland rice plants in consecutive plantations. Experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with four replications of four treatments: rice seed inoculated with P. fluorescens BRm-32111, rice seed inoculated with B. pyrrocinia BRm-32113(both sown on soil with rice residue), non-inoculated plants sown on soil with rice residue(control with residue(WR)), and non-inoculated plants on soil with no residue(NR). Roots and seedling growth were adversely affected by allelopathic compounds in control WR plants. Plants inoculated with rhizobacteria P. fluorescens BRm-32111 or B. pyrrocinia BRm-32113 induced an increase of 88% in biomass, 3% in the leaf area, 40% in length, 67% in root biomass, 21% in chlorophyll a, 53% in chlorophyll(a+b), 50% in rate of carbon assimilation(A), 227% in A/rubisco carboxylation efficiency(Ci) and 63% in water use efficiency(WUE) compared to control WR plants. These results indicate that rhizobacteria P. fluorescens BRm-32111 and B. pyrrocinia BRm-32113 increase the tolerance of rice plants to stress from allelochemicals. There are possible practical agricultural applications of these results for mitigating the effects of environmental allelochemistry on upland rice.

This study uses the digital image correlation technique to measure the crack tip displacement field at various crack lengths in U71mnG rail steel,and the interpolated continuous displacement field was obtained by fitting with a back propagation(BP)neural network.The slip and stacking of dislocations affect crack initiation and growth,leading to changes in the crack tip field and the fatigue characteristics of crack growth.The Christopher-James-Patterson(CJP)model describes the elastic stress field around a growing fatigue crack that experiences plasticity-induced shielding.In the present work,this model is modified by including the effect of the dislocation field on the plastic zone of the crack tip and hence on the elastic field by introducing a plastic flow factorρ,which represents the amount of blunting of the crack tip.The Levenberg-marquardt(L-m)nonlinear least squares method was used to solve for the stress intensity factors.To verify the accuracy of this modified CJP model,the theoretical and experimental plastic zone errors before and after modification were compared,and the variation trends of the stress intensity factors and the plastic flow factorρwere analysed.The results show that the CJP model,with the introduction ofρ,exhibits a good blunting trend.In the low plasticity state,the modified model can accurately describe the experimental plastic zone,and the modified stress intensity factors are more accurate,which proves the effectiveness of dislocation correction.This plastic flow correction provides a more accurate crack tip field model and improves the CJP crack growth relationship.

The liver is an exceptional organ,not only because of its unique anatomical and physiological characteristics,but also because of its unlimited regenerative capacity.Unfolding of the molecular mechanisms that govern liver regeneration has allowed researchers to exploit them to augment liver regeneration.Dramatic progress in the field,however,was made by the introduction of the powerful tool of gene therapy.Transfer of genetic materials,such as hepatocyte growth factor,using both viral and non-viral vectors has proved to be successful in augmenting liver regeneration in various animal models.for future clinical studies,ongoing research aims at eliminating toxicity of viral vectors and increasing transduction efficiency of non-viral vectors,which are the main drawbacks of these systems.Another goal of current research is to develop gene therapy that targets specific liver cells using receptors that are unique to and highly expressed by different liver cell types.The outcome of such investigations will,undoubtedly,pave the way for future successful clinical trials.

Patent Citations Analysis and Its Value in Research Evaluation： A Review and a New Approach to map Technology-relevant Research

Purpose： first, to review the state-of-the-art in patent citation analysis, particularly characteristics of patent citations to scientific literature （scientific non-patent references, SNPRs）. Second, to present a novel mapping approach to identify technology-relevant research based on the papers cited by and referring to the SNPRs. Design/methodology/approach： In the review part we discuss the context of SNPRs such as the time lags between scientific achievements and inventions. Also patent-to-patent citation is addressed particularly because this type of patent citation analysis is a major element in the assessment of the economic value of patents. We also review the research on the role of universities and researchers in technological development, with important issues such as universities as sources of technological knowledge and inventor-author relations. We conclude the review part of this paper with an overview of recent research on mapping and network analysis of the science and technology interface and of technological progress in interaction with science. In the second part we apply new techniques for the direct visualization of the cited and citing relations of SNPRs, the mapping of the landscape around SNPRs by bibliographic coupling and co-citation analysis, and the mapping of the conceptual environment of SNPRs by keyword co-occurrence analysis. findings： We discuss several properties of SNPRs. Only a small minority of publications covered by the Web of Science or Scopus are cited by patents, about 3%-4%. However, for publications based on university-industry collaboration the number of SNPRs is considerably higher, around 15%. The proposed mapping methodology based on a ＂second order SNPR approach＂ enables a better assessment of the technological relevance of research. Research limitations： The main limitation is that a more advanced merging of patent and publication data, in particular unification of author and inventor names, in still a necessity. fiber Bragg grating(fBG)sensors are often used in monitoring activities and to ensure that environmental parameters satisfy industrial requirements.They offer crucial safety measures in the early detection of hazards due to their greatly reduced size,low weight,flexibility,and immunity to electromagnetic interference.These characteristics make fBGs suitable also for use in relation to the human body for in vivo measurements and long-term monitoring.In this study,recent developments are presented with regard to the utilization of these sensors to measure the so-called post-mortem interval(PmI).Such developments rely on numerical simulations based on the matlab software and monitoring of the rectal temperature,which is one of the main parameters for estimating the PmI.first,the matlab software is used to solve the Henssge equation for different ambient temperatures and for different body masses;then a Bragg grating sensors is used for post-mortem dating.The results and their accuracy are discussed.

Strainburst is the most frequently encountered type of rockburst in underground mines.Strainburst occurs when the stress near the excavation boundary reaches the peak strength of the rock mass causing it to fail suddenly and violently.To mitigate strainburst damage risk,effective rock support is needed.In strainburst-prone grounds,it is critical to have rock support components to fulfill the role of rock reinforcement first to prevent rock failure.On the other hand,well-retained and reinforced rock masses may be excessively deformed and fail violently.In such a case,yielding elements are needed in the rock support system to absorb the excess strain energy released due to rock failure.The conventional method to support strainburst-prone grounds is to install rock reinforcement system using rebar and mesh first and then install yielding support system using dynamic rockbolts at a later stage.This two-stage rock support installation process is not effective because it can adversely impact mine production schedule.This paper presents a new,patented dynamic rockbolt,which is called superbolt and is developed for rock support in burst-prone grounds.Laboratory testing confirmed that the superbolt has superb capacity to achieve the goal of reinforcing and holding rock masses.The superbolt is characterized by high dynamic energy absorption capacity,consistent performance,and the ability to withstand repeated dynamic loading.The new rockbolt can be used in a one-pass rock support system to facilitate rapid drift development in underground mines and increase mine safety and productivity.

During the last two decades,many algorithms were developed to simulate the solidification process for different casting methods like ingots,continuous casting of steel and the direct chill cast of aluminum.Experiments performed under exactly known conditions and with the detailed knowledge of meso-and micro-structures are required for validating these simulations.The aim of this paper is to give a data set to validate these simulations.Unidirectional solidification experiments were performed by using a rotating magnetic field(Rmf)to study the effect of melt flow on the solidified micro-and meso-structure of the Al-7wt.%Si binary alloy.The first and the third 1/3 parts of samples were solidified without magnetic stirring,and the second(middle)1/3 part was solidified by using magnetic stirring.The magnetic induction was 10 m T,the temperature gradient was~7 K/mm,and the sample movement velocity was 0.1 mm/s.On the longitudinal section of the sample,the columnar/equiaxed transition(CET),the equiaxed/columnar transition(ECT),the secondary dendrite arm spacing(SDAS),and the macrosegregation(concentration distribution and the amount of eutectic)were investigated.The primary dendrite arm spacing(PDAS)and the grain structure were studied on the cross-section after color etching.

In the spectral solution of 3-D Poisson equations in cylindrical and spherical coordinates including the axis or the center,it is convenient to employ radial basis functions that depend on the fourier wavenumber or on the latitudinal mode.This idea has been adopted by matsushima and marcus and by Verkley for planar problems and pursued by the present authors for spherical ones.for the Dirichlet boundary value problem in both geometries,original bases have been introduced built upon Jacobi polynomials which lead to a purely diagonal representation of the radial second-order differential operator of all spectral modes.This note details the origin of such a diagonalization which extends to cylindrical and spherical regions the properties of the Legendre basis introduced by Jie Shen for Cartesian domains.Closed form expressions are derived for the diagonal elements of the stiffness matrices as well as for the elements of the tridiagonal mass matrices occurring in evolutionary problems.furthermore,the bound on the condition number of the spectral matrices associated with the Helmholtz equation are determined,proving in a rigorous way one of the main advantages of the proposed radial bases.
