Objective: To discover the mechanism behind ameliorative effects of michelia champaca(m. champaca) in gastrointestinal, respiratory and cardiovascular disorders. methods: Antispasmodic potential was evaluated by trying the m. champaca extract(aqueous:ethanolic) on rabbit aorta, trachea and jejunum in vitro. Isotonic and isometric transducers coupled with Power Lab data acquisition system was used to record the responses of isolated tissues. Results: m. champaca extract relaxed the spontaneous and high K^+(80 mmol/L)-induced contractions of isolated jejunum preparation of rabbit showing a Ca^(2+) channel blocking mechanism. moreover, extract shifted calcium concentration response curves towards right like standard calcium channel blocker verapamil. In rabbit tracheal preparation, m. champaca relaxed both carbachol(1 μmol/L) and high K^+-induced contractions, likewise verapamil. In rabbit aorta preparation, m. champaca relaxed phenylephrine(1 μmol/L) and high K^+-induced contractions similar to verapamil. Conclusion: m. champaca possesses spasmolytic, airways relaxant and vasodilator actions mediated perhaps due to blocking of Ca^(2+) channels, hence validating its therapeutic usage in diarrhea, asthma and hypertension.

Pattern matching is a very important algorithm used in many applications such as search engine and DNA analysis. They are aiming to find a pattern in a text. This paper proposes a Pattern matching Algorithm Using Changing Consecutive Characters (PmCCC) to make the searching pro- cess of the algorithm faster. PmCCC enhances the shift process that determines how the pattern moves in case of the occurrence of the mismatch between the pattern and the text. It enhances the Berry Ravindran (BR) shift function by using m consecutive characters where m is the pattern length. The formal basis and the algorithms are presented. The experimental results show that PmCCC made enhancements in searching process by reducing the number of comparisons and the number of attempts. Comparing the results of PmCCC with other related algorithms has shown significant enhancements in average number of comparisons and average number of attempts.

A short review of some reference solutions for the magnetohydrodynamic flow of blood is proposed in this paper. We present in details the solutions of Hartmann (1937), of Vardanyan (1973) and of Sud et al. (1974). In each case, a comparison is provided with the corresponding solution for the flow without any external magnetic field, namely Poiseuille (plane or cylindrical) and Womersley. We also present a synopsis of some other solutions for people who would like to go further in this topic. The interest in mHD flow of blood may be motivated by many reasons, such as magnetic Resonance Imaging (mRI), Pulse Wave Velocity measurement, magnetic drug targeting, tissue engineering, mechanotransduction studies, and blood pulse energy harvesting… These fundamental solutions should also be used as particular limiting cases to validate any proposed more elaborated solutions or to validate computer codes.

Impact of an External magnetic Field on the Shear Stresses Exerted by Blood Flowing in a Large Vessel

The aim of this paper is to provide an advanced analysis of the shear stresses exerted on vessel walls by the flowing blood, when a limb or the whole body, or a vessel prosthesis, a scaffold… is placed in an external static magnetic field B0. This type of situation could occur in several biomedical applications, such as magnetic resonance imaging (mRI), magnetic drug transport and targeting, tissue engineering, mechanotransduction studies… Since blood is a conducting fluid, its charged particles are deviated by the Hall effect, and the equations of motion include the Lorentz force. Consequently, the velocity profile is no longer axisymmetric, and the velocity gradients at the wall vary all around the vessel. To illustrate this idea, we expand the exact solution given by Gold (1962) for the stationary flow of blood in a rigid vessel with an insulating wall in the presence of an external static magnetic field: the analytical expressions for the velocity gradients are provided and evaluated near the wall. We demonstrate that the derivative of the longitudinal velocity with respect to the radial coordinate is preponderant when compared to the θ-derivative, and that elevated values of B0 would be required to induce some noteworthy influence on the shear stresses at the vessel wall.

The magnetohydrodynamics laws govern the motion of a conducting fluid, such as blood, in an externally applied static magnetic field B0. When an artery is exposed to a magnetic field, the blood charged particles are deviated by the Lorentz force thus inducing electrical currents and voltages along the vessel walls and in the neighboring tissues. Such a situation may occur in several biomedical applications: magnetic resonance imaging (mRI), magnetic drug transport and targeting, tissue engineering… In this paper, we consider the steady unidirectional blood flow in a straight circular rigid vessel with non-conducting walls, in the presence of an exterior static magnetic field. The exact solution of Gold (1962) (with the induced fields not neglected) is revisited. It is shown that the integration over a cross section of the vessel of the longitudinal projection of the Lorentz force is zero, and that this result is related to the existence of current return paths, whose contributions compensate each other over the section. It is also demonstrated that the classical definition of the shear stresses cannot apply in this situation of magnetohydrodynamic flow, because, due to the existence of the Lorentz force, the axisymmetry is broken.

The efficiency and performance of Distributed Database management Systems (DDBmS) is mainly measured by its proper design and by network communication cost between sites. Fragmentation and distribution of data are the major design issues of the DDBmS. In this paper, we propose new approach that integrates both fragmentation and data allocation in one strategy based on high performance clustering technique and transaction processing cost functions. This new approach achieves efficiently and effectively the objectives of data fragmentation, data allocation and network sites clustering. The approach splits the data relations into pair-wise disjoint fragments and determine whether each fragment has to be allocated or not in the network sites, where allocation benefit outweighs the cost depending on high performance clustering technique. To show the performance of the proposed approach, we performed experimental studies on real database application at different networks connectivity. The obtained results proved to achieve minimum total data transaction costs between different sites, reduced the amount of redundant data to be accessed between these sites and improved the overall DDBmS performance.

Background: The role of vitamin D in population subgroups throughout the world continues to be a topic of interest among researchers. Current evidence demonstrates that treating vitamin D deficiency plays a significant role in improving mortality in hospitalized patients, reducing hospital length of stay, and boosting innate immune system. Vitamin D levels vary with age, gender, body mass index (BmI) and geographical area. The purpose of this study is to evaluate vitamin D levels in a cohort of patients in Northeast Tennessee. Study: This institutional review board-approved, retrospective study evaluated vitamin D levels of patients obtained from mcleod Cancer and Blood Center. Vitamin D levels were collected over a 2-year period and classified as deficient (mL), insufficient (20 - 30 ng/mL), or replete (>30 ng/mL). Data were then stratified based on patient characteristics (age, gender, body mass index (BmI), race, seasons, and place of residence) and compounds of vitamin D (D2 and D3). Results: There were 2011 individuals included, with only 44.3% having replete levels and 21.4% with levels less than 20 ng/mL. Females with vitamin D deficiency are more likely to have levels below 20 ng/ml compared to males (18.6% vs. 23%, respectively, p = 0.003). Regarding BmI, the highest levels were reported in normal weight and overweight. With regards to age, advanced age (≥70) was associated with the highest levels and most replete patients. Winter months were associated with the lowest levels of vitamin D. Higher vitamin D levels were found in individuals over 70 years, normal weight and overweight category. Conclusion: Testing vitamin D levels in high-risk groups becomes of utmost importance in areas with longer winter months, obese and underweight patients. Vitamin D levels should be routinely tested and treated in vulnerable populations.
