Epidemiological derivation of fl ux-based critical levels for visible ozone injury in European forests

The European mOTTLES project set-up a newgeneration network for ozone(O 3)monitoring in 17 plots in France,Italy and *** monitoring stations allowed:(1)estimating the accumulated exposure AOT40 and stomatal O 3 fl uxes(PODY)with an hourly threshold of uptake(Y)to represent the detoxifi cation capacity of trees(POD1,with Y=1 nmol O 3 m^−2 s^−1 per leaf area);and(2)collecting data of forest-response indicators,*** defoliation and visible foliar O 3-like injury over the time period 2017–*** soil water content was the most important parameter aff ecting crown defoliation and was a key factor aff ecting the severity of visible foliar O 3-like injury on the dominant tree species in a *** soil water content is thus an essential parameter in the PODY estimation,particularly for water-limited *** assessment based on stomatal fl ux-based standard and on real plant symptoms is more appropriated than the exposure-based method for protecting *** fl ux-eff ect relationships,we derived fl ux-based critical levels(CLef)for forest protection against visible foliar O 3-like *** recommend CLef of 5 and 12 mmol m^−2 POD1 for broadleaved species and conifers,*** using PODY as legislative standard in Europe,we recommend using the CLec for≥25%of crown defoliation in a plot:17,000 and 19,000 nmol mol^−1 h AOT40 for conifers and broadleaved species,respectively.

System Identification m.deling and Unstable Behavior of the Dynamics of Flows within the Tip Region of an Axial Compressor Blade Passage

In recent years, the correlation coefficient of pressure data from the same blade passage in an axial compressor unit has been used to characterize the state of flow in the blade passage. In addition, the correlation coefficient has been successfully used as an indicator for active control action using air injection. In this work, the correlation coefficient approach is extended to incorporate system identification algorithms in order to extract a mathematical m.del of the dynamics of the flows within a blade passage. The dynamics analyzed in this research focus on the flow streams and pressure along the rotor blades as well as on the unsteady tip leakage flow from the rotor tip gaps. The system identification results are used to construct a root locus plot for different flow coefficients, starting far away from stall to near stall conditions. As the compressor moves closer to stall, the poles of the identified m.dels move towards the imaginary axis of the complex plane, indicating an impending instability. System frequency data is captured using the proposed correlation based system identification approach. Additionally, an oscillatory tip leakage flow is observed at a flow coefficient away from stall and how this oscillation changes as the compressor approaches stall is an interesting result of this research. Comparative research is analyzed to determine why the oscillatory flow behavior occurs at a specific sensor location within the tip region of the rotor blade.

On February 16,2021,an artificial object moving slowly over the mediterranean was recorded by the Spanish meteor Network(SPmN).Based on astrometric measurements,we identified this event as the reentry engine burn of a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle’s upper *** study this event in detail,we adapted the plane intersection method for near-straight meteoroid trajectories to analyze the slow and curved orbits associated with artificial *** corroborate our results,we approximated the orbital elements of the upper stage using four pieces of“debris”cataloged by the ***’s Combined Space Operations *** on these calculations,we also estimated the possible deorbit hazard zone using the mSISE90 m.del *** provide guidance regarding the interference that these artificial bolides may generate in fireball ***,because artificial bolides will likely become more frequent in the future,we point out the new role that ground-based detection networks can play in the monitoring of potentially hazardous artificial objects in near-Earth space and in determining the strewn fields of artificial space debris.

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have potential for applications in electronic devices. A key issue, thereby, is the fine-tuning of their electronic characteristics, which can be achieved through subtle structural modifications. These are not limited to the conventional armchair, zigzag, and cove edges, but also possible through incorporation of non-hexagonal rings. On-surface synthesis enables the fabrication and visualization of GNRs with atomically precise chemical structures, but strategies for the incorporation of non-hexagonal rings have been underexplored. Herein, we describe the on-surface synthesis of armchair-edged GNRs with incorporated five-membered rings through the C-H activation and cyclization of benzylic methyl groups. Ortho-Tolyl-substituted dibromobianthryl was employed as the precursor monomer, and visualization of the resulting structures after annealing at 300 °C on a gold surface by high-resolution noncontact atomic force microscopy clearly revealed the formation of methylene-bridged pentagons at the GNR edges. These persisted after annealing at 340 °C, along with a few fully conjugated pentagons having singly-hydrogenated apexes. The benzylic methyl groups could also migrate or cleave-off, resulting in defects lacking the five-membered rings. moreover, unexpected and unique structural rearrangements, including the formation of embedded heptagons, were observed. despite the coexistence of different reaction pathways that hamper selective synthesis of a uniform structure, our results provide novel insights into on-surface reactions en route to functional, non-benzenoid carbon nanomaterials.

Right ventricle dysfunction does not predict mortality in patients with SARS-CoV-2-related acute respiratory distress syndrome on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support

BACKGROUND The prognostic role of right ventricle dilatation and dysfunction(RVDD)has not been elucidated in patients with coronavirus disease(COVID)-related respiratory failure refractory to standard treatment needing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECmO)*** To assess whether pre veno-venous(VV)ECmO RVDD were related to inintensive care unit(ICU)*** We enrolled 61 patients with COVID-related acute respiratory distress syndrome refractory to conventional treatment submitted to VV ECmO and consecutively admitted to our ICU(an ECmO referral center)from 31th march 2020 to 31th August *** echocardiographic exam was performed immediately before VV ECmO *** males were prevalent(73.8%)and patients with a body mass index>30 kg/m^(2) were the majority(46/61,75%).The overall in-ICU mortality rate was 54.1%(33/61).RVDD was detectable in more than half of the population(34/61,55.7%)and associated with higher simplified organ functional assessment(SOFA)values(P=0.029)and a longer mechanical ventilation duration prior to ECmO support(P=0.046).Renal replacement therapy was more frequently needed in RVDD patients(P=0.002).A higher in-ICU mortality(P=0.024)was observed in RVDD *** echo variables were independent predictors of in-ICU *** In patients with COVID-related respiratory failure on ECmO support,RVDD(dilatation and dysfunction)is a common finding and identifies a subset of patients characterized by a more severe disease(as indicated by higher SOFA values and need of renal replacement therapy)and by a higher in-ICU ***(also when considered separately)did not result independently associated with in-ICU mortality in these patients.

mitsugumin 29 (mG29) is a transmembrane protein that is normally found in the triad junction of skeletal muscle. Our previous studies have shown that targeted deletion of mg29 from the skeletal muscle resulted in abnormality of the triad junction structure, and also increased susceptibility to muscle fatigue. To elucidate the basis of these effects, we investigated the properties of Ca2+-uptake and -release in toxin-skinned Extensor Digitorium Longus (EDL) muscle fibers from control and mg29 knockout mice. Compared with the control muscle, submaximal Ca2+-uptake into the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) was slower and the storage of Ca2+ inside the SR was less in the mutant muscle, due to increased leakage process of Ca2+ movement across the SR. The leakage pathway is associated with the increased sensitivity of Ca2+/caffeine -induced Ca2+ release to myoplasmic Ca2+. Therefore, the increased fatigability of mutant EDL muscles can result from a combination of a slowing of Ca2+ uptake, modification of Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release (CICR), and a reduction in total SR Ca2+ content.

Osmic acid staining of myelin sheath in normal and regenerated peripheral nerves

Abstract：Objective: To introduce a practical, economical, and time-saving method to stain (with osmic acid) the myelin sheath in normal and regenerated peripheral nerves. methods: A total of 12 Sprague Dawley rats, weighing 250-320 g (mean=276 g±38 g),were divided into two groups: a normal nerve group (n=6) and a regenerated nerve group (n=6).In the normal nerve group, the ventral and dorsal roots of L4 to L6 and their sciatic nerves were harvested for histological analysis. While in the regenerated nerve group, the right sciatic nerves were severed and then repaired with an epineurial microsuture method. The repaired nerves were harvested 12 weeks postoperatively. All the specimens were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde and transferred to 2% osmic acid for 3-5 days. Then the specimens were kept in 75% alcohol before being embedded in paraffin. The tissues were cut into sections of 3 μm in thickness with a conventional microtome. Results: Under a light microscope, myelin sheaths were clearly visible at all magnifications in both groups. They were stained in clear dark colour with a light yellow or colorless background, which provided high contrast images to allow reliable morphometric measurements. morphological assessment was m.de in both normal and regenerated sciatic nerves. The ratios of the myelin area to the fibre area were 60.28%±7.66% in the normal nerve group and 51.67%±6.85% in the regenerated nerve group, respectively (P＜0.01). Conclusions: Osmic acid staining is easy to perform and a very clear image for morphometrical assessment is easy to obtain. Therefore, it is a reliable technique for quantitative evaluation of nerve morphology。
