In the present work, the synthesis of micro- and nano-sized spheres of metallic bismuth by microwave-assisted solvothermal method is reported. The synthesis method was carried out at different power levels and at a unique frequency of microwave irradiation. The sphere sizes were controlled by the microwave power level and the concentration of dissolved precursor. Structural and morphological characterization was performed by SEm, HRTEm, EELS and XRD. The results demonstrated that rhombohedral zero valent Bi spheres were synthesized after microwave radiation at 600 and 1200 W. However, if the power level is decreased to 120 W, a monoclinic phase of Bi203 is obtained with a flake-like morphology. In comparison with a conventional hydrothermal process, the microwave-assisted solvothermal approach provides many advantages such as shorter reaction time, optimum manipulation of morphologies and provides a specific chemical phase and avoids the mixture of structural phases and morphologies which is essential for further applications such as drug delivery or functionalization with organic materials, thanks to its biocompatibility.

Climate change affects distribution and persistence of species. However, forecasting species＇ re-sponses to these changes requires long-term data series that are often lacking in ecological *** used 15 years of small mammal trapping data collected between 1978 and 2015 in 3 areas atDoSana National Park （southwest Spain） to （i） describe changes in species composition and （ii） test theassociation between local climate conditions and size of small mammal populations. Overall, 5 specieswere captured： wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus, algerian mouse mus spretus, greater white-toothed shrew Crocidura russula, garden dormouse Eliomys quercinus, and black rat Rattus rattus. Thetemporal pattern in the proportion of captures of each species suggests that the small mammal diver-sity declined with time. Although the larger species （e.g., E. quercinus）, better adapted to colder cli-mate, have disappeared from our trapping records, m. spretus, a small species inhabiting southwestEurope and the mediterranean coast of Africa, currently is almost the only trapped species. We used 2-level hierarchical models to separate changes in abundance from changes in probability of captureusing records of A. sylvaticus in all 3 areas and of mo spretus in 1. We found that heavy rainfall and lowtemperatures were positively related to abundance of A. sylvaticus, and that the number of extremelyhot days was negatively related to abundance of m. spretus. Despite other mechanisms are likely to beinvolved, our findings support the importance of climate for the distribution and persistence of thesespecies and raise conservation concerns about potential cascading effects in the Donana ecosystem.

Dose of alendronate directly increases trabeculae expansivity without altering bone volume in rat femurs

AIm To evaluate the effects of sodium alendronate on bone repair in fractures created in appendicular bones. mETHODS Wistar rats(n = 36) were allocated into three distinct groups: group C(control), group B1(received 1 mg/kg of alendronate), and group B2(received 3 mg/kg of alendronate). The rats underwent femoral transversal linear fracture surgery using stable internal fixation with a 2.0 mm plate and screw system. Each animal randomly received intraperitoneal applications of sodium alendronate at a dose corresponding to group B1 or B2 three times a week, while the control group received a 0.9% saline solution. Drug administration was performed until euthanasia at 45 d. The femurs were removed and each surgical piece was sent for radiographic, tomographic and microtomographic analysis. Data were submitted to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis(95% confidence interval).RESULTS Quantitative evaluations of bone neoformation did not show differences among the groups in the radiographic(P = 0.341), microtomographic(P = 0.581) and tomographic evaluations(P = 0.171). In the qualitative microtomographic analysis, a smaller distance was observed between the internal bone trabeculae in the groups that used alendronate(P = 0.05). On the other hand, group B2 had a higher amount of bone trabeculae per unit length when compared to the other groups(P = 0.04).CONCLUSION It is likely that the use of alendronate did not have a direct influence on the amount of bone neoformation, however it did influence the bone quality in a dosedependent manner, ultimately affecting the distance and quantity of the trabeculae.

A simple arylhydrazone containing the benzothiazole moiety which may be used as an efficient ligand in the palladium-catalyzed mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-miyaura cross-coupling reactions, under infrared irradiation as an alternative source of energy, is presented. The reactions proceeded with extremely high efficiency under mild conditions and produced very good yields.

Tolerance of Chrysantemum maximum to heavy metals:The potential for its use in the revegetation of tailings heaps

To find if ornamental plants are applicable to the remediation of metal-polluted areas, the tolerance of chrysanthemum plants （Chysanthemum maximum） var. Shasta to different metals under hydroponic conditions was studied. Their responses as influenced by the mycorrhizal fungus glomus mosseae （Nicol. ＆ gerd.） gerdemann ＆ Trappe BEg25 on substrates containing mine residues were also investigated. Our results showed that chrysanthemum is a metal-tolerant plant under hydroponic conditions, plants behaving as Pb-excluders, whereas Cd, Cu and Ni were accumulated in roots. Low accumulation in flowers was observed for Cd and Cu but it was concentration-dependent. Ni and Pb were not translocated to flowers. Shoot biomass was not significantly affected by the different rates of mine residue addition for both mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants. mycorrhizal plants accumulated less Pb and Cu in both shoots and roots than non-mycorrhizal plants. Chysanthemum could be a prospective plant for revegetation of tailings and the use of inoculation may decrease plant metal accumulation in polluted soils.

Hydatid cyst of the colon:A systematic review of the literature

BACKgROUND Primary hydatid disease in the colon is an extremely rare finding. We performed a systematic review of cases of hydatidosis of the colon published to date. AIm To systematic review the published papers about hydatidosis of the colon. mETHODS Following PRISmA guidelines, we performed an unlimited search for articles on CH in the mEDLINE (Pubmed), EmBASE, Cochrane, Latindex and Scielo databases, published in English, Spanish, French, german or Italian between January 1, 1960 and December 15, 2018. The search items were:(Colon) AND [(hydatidosis) OR (hydatid disease) OR (echinococcosis)]. RESULTS Nine case reports were found [five men, four women, median age 64.55 years (range: 21-81)]. The most frequent clinical manifestation was abdominal pain (8/9)(88.9%). In almost all cases several image studies were carried out, but abdominal computed tomography was the most used (66.7%). Five resections of the colon (62.5%) and three sutures of the fistula between cyst and colon (37.5%) were performed. Four patients did not present post-operative complications, but one died. Postoperative period was recorded for a mean period of 35 months. No recurrences were recorded. CONCLUSION The most frequent symptom was abdominal pain (evidence level 4). Computed tomography was the most frequently used diagnostic imaging technique (evidence level 4). Colectomy was the most appropriate treatment (evidence level 5). All the diagnostic and therapeutic options for hydatid cysts located in colon have a low level of evidence.

Nanomaterials for Sensor Applications

Recently, a large part of the advances in nanotechnology have been directed towards the development of high-speed electronics, more efficient catalysts, and sensors. This latter group of applications has great relevance and unprecedented development potential for the coming *** far, some of the main objectives for the development of sensors have focused on making more sensitive, effective and specific sensing *** improvement of these systems and the increase of specificity are clearly associated with a decrease in size of the components, which can lead to obtaining more rapid action, almost in real time. Nanomaterials currently used in sensor development include a long list of nanostructured systems, as for example: metal nanotubes, nanowires, nanofibers, nanocomposites, nanorods, nanoparticles, nanostructured polymers, and different allotropes of carbon as carbon nanotubes, graphene or fullerenes, among others.
