The effect of different types of organic solvents on the structural integrity of m13 phages has been directly visualized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The exposure of m13 phages to apolar hexane had no effect on the structure of the phages for up to 8 h. In contrast, phages showed ~10-fold contraction into rod-like I-forms and to flattened spheroids with ~12 nm diameter upon exposure to polar organic solvents. We show that this finding can be beneficial for the macromolecular self-assembly and in broader aspects, to enhance the spatial arrangement of desired inorganic nanoparticles in the rapidly developing field of virotronics.

Background/aims: To determine whether the 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP)/cortisol ratio as a marker of immature11-beta hydroxylase activity can predict severe systemic hypotension in preterm neonates. methods: Serum cortisol and 17-OHP concentrations were measured in capillary blood deposited on blotter paper on day 3 post-natal age (Day 3) in infants less than 32 weeks postmenstrual age (PmA). The predictive value of 17-OHP/cortisol ratio for a first episode of systemic hypotension occurring after Day 3 (FESH) was evaluated. Results: Of 105 infants included, 14 patients (13%) presented a FESH. Neither the 17-OHP/cortisol ratio, nor the 17-OHP or cortisol concentrations were associated with the occurrence of a FESH when adjusted for potential confounding factors. 17-OHP and cortisol were inversely associated to PmA (r = ﹣0.36 and ﹣0.40, respectively). Cortisol, but not 17-OHP, was associated with the type of hospitalization unit, the respiratory support and the presence of a patent ductus arteriosus. The 17-OHP/cortisol ratio was associated with the type of hospitalization unit only. Conclusions: The 17-OHP/ cortisol ratio at Day 3 did not predict the occurrence of a first episode of systemic hypotension after Day3 inpreterm neonates.

Context: Despite the new recommendations “Test and Treat”, the virological and molecular parameters remain important information for Antiretroviral Treatment and adequate for monitoring of patients infected with HIV/AIDS. Objective: the Objective of this study is to present the virological and molecular profile of People Living with HIV starting Antiretroviral Therapy in Kinshasa in the era of the Dolutegravir. methods: This was a transversal study to determine virological and molecular profile of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) starting an ARV Treatment. The patient’s inclusion period was from October 04, 2021 to February 15, 2022. A sample of 5 ml of blood was taken in a tube with EDTA anticoagulant for molecular Biology analyzes (Viral Load and Sequencing) in all HIV patients, after reading and signing informed consent. The population was made up of adult patients over the age of 18, infected with HIV and starting ART. Results: 119 patients (56.3% of women) were included in this study, thus a sex-ratio of 1.29. The average age of patients included was 39.87 ± 12.36 years. The most represented age group is that of 36 to 45 with 37 patients (31.9%) followed by that from 26 to 35 years with 24 patients (20.7%). Out of 119 patients, 21 patients had an undetectable Viral Load (VL). The median value of VL was 4.16 log10 RNA copies/ml. 114 samples were successfully amplified. Subtype A was dominant with 23 cases (20.2%);followed by the subtype C and CRF02_AG each with 14.0%, and D (10.5 %). K65R (1.8%), T69P/N (4.4%), K70R (7.9%) and m184V (7.0%) mutations were listed as existing mutations for Nucleotide Transcriptase Inhibitors. Conclusion: 38 patients (31.93%) started the TARV with a positive virological prognosis. The subtype A remains dominant in Kinshasa with 23 cases (20.2%);followed by the subtype C and CRF02_AG each with 14.0%. The high-energy few-cycle mid-infrared laser pulse beyond 2μm is of immense importance for attosecond science and strong-field ***,the limited gain bandwidth of laser crystals such as Ho:YLF and Ho:YAG allows the generation of picosecond(ps)long pulses and,hence,makes it challenging to generate few-cycle pulse at 2μm without utilizing an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier(OPCPA).moreover,the exclusive use of the near-infrared wavelength has limited the generation of wavelengths beyond 4μm(OPCPA).Furthermore,high harmonic generation(HHG)conversion efficiency reduces dramatically when driven by a long-wavelength *** schemes such as multi-color HHG have been proposed to enhance the harmonic ***,it is highly desirable to generate few-cycle to femtosecond pulses from a 2μm laser for driving these ***,we utilize two-stage nonlinear spectral broadening and pulse compression based on the Kagome-type hollow-core photonic crystal fiber(HC-PCF)to compress few-ps pulses to sub-50 fs from a Ho:YLF amplifier at 2μm at 1 kHz repetition *** demonstrate both experimentally and numerically the compression of 3.3 ps at 140μJ pulses to 48 fs at 11μJ with focal intensity reaching 10^(13)W/cm^(***,this system can be used for driving HHG in solids at 2μ*** the first stage,the pulses are spectrally broadened in Kagome fiber and compressed in a silicon-based prism compressor to 285 fs at a pulse energy of 90μ*** the second stage,the 285 fs pulse is self-compressed in air-filled *** fine-tuning of the group delay dispersion(GDD)externally in a 3 mm window,a compressed pulse of 48 fs is *** leads to a 70-fold compression of the ps pulses at 2050 *** further used the sub-50 fs laser pulses to generate white light by focusing the pulse into a thin medium of YAG.

The aim of this work is to improve the high performance of mud bricks. The latter was reinforced with rice straws as stabiliser leading to an improvement of the physico-mechanical properties. Thus, the physical characteristics of the clay such as natural water content, density, atterberg limit, plasticity limit (Wp) and plasticity index (Ip) were determined. Their values are respectively 8.39%, 2025.73 Kg/m3, 47.66%, 29.75% and 17.91%. The clay used is a low plastic organic silt. The normal proctocol provided an optimum dry density (ɣOP) of 1.28 Kg/m3 at an optimum moisture content of 12.42%. The actual density of the straw is 464 Kg/m3, its absorption rate reached 206% in 5 mins and stabilised at 385% at 480 mins of immersion. The maximum bending and compression strengths are respectively 1.52 and 0.164 mPa. The mud brick absorption coefficients obtained are between 4.875 at 0% straw and 20.573% at 3% straw.

Background: The expression of calcium-binding S100 molecules organized within the epidermal differentiation complex on chromosome 1q21 is disturbed in hyperproliferative skin diseases such as psoriasis. Objectives: We studied whether serum levels of S100 proteins A8 (S100A8) and A9 (S100A9) are elevated in psoriasis, correlated their amounts with disease activity and identified potential cellular sources. methods: Serum obtained from psoriasis patients or from healthy individuals was studied for S100A8 and S100A9 levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Data were correlated to disease activity as reflected by the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI). Cellular sources of S100A8 and S100A9 were identified by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry of lesional psoriatic and nonlesional, nonpsoriatic skin. Results: A significant increase of S100A8/S100A9 serum levels was found in patients with psoriasis compared with healthy controls. Grading the patients into two groups of severity, individuals with a PASI of m levels of 705 ± 120 ng mL- 1 (mean ± SEm, n = 18), those with a PASI of ≥ 15 showed levels of 1315 ± 150 ng mL- 1 (n = 32) while controls presentedwith 365± 50 ng mL- 1. Performing in situ hybridization of lesional psoriatic skin we detected a dramatic induction of both S100A8 and S100A9 mRNA and protein primarily in the suprabasal layers of the epidermis while expression was negligible in nonlesional,nonpsoriatic interfollicular epidermis. Conclusions: Our data demonstrate that hyperproliferation and abnormal differentiation of psoriatic skin is associated with a massive upregulation and secretion of S100A8 and S100A9, suggesting not only a prominent role of these molecules during intracellular calcium-dependent signalling but also implying distinct extracellular functions.

Indices of Water Quality and Pesticide monitoring Survey in Lake of Western Cote d’Ivoire and Its Human Risk Assessment

The aims of the work were to study the current quality of the water in Lake DOHOU used for drinking water supply through several physical, chemical analyses and using water quality indices (WQI). In addition, the question was whether the populations are at risk after drinking water of lake following a reduction of 50% and 75% in the median and maximum values of pesticides. Thus, the results of the pesticide monitoring program were incorporated into probabilistic human health risk assessment exercises. Water samples were collected over a period of one year. Pesticides were subjected to solid phase extraction and then analyzed using gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectroscopy. The other parameters were measured according to conventional methods. The results showed that the most frequently detected pesticides were aldicarb (79%), simazine (79%) and monolinuron (44%). They also showed the mean values of concentrations exceeding 1.5 μg/L. metoxuron detected at a frequency of 29% showed the maximum average concentration (13.46 μg/L). Nearly 98% of the sampling points had at least one substance with an average concentration above the quality standard (0.1 μg/L) and 80% did not meet the total concentration standards. Cumulative risk quotient estimates after 50% or 75% abatement for frequently identified pesticides were greater than unity when extreme?values for adults and children were considered. To determine the suitability of water for aquatic life, drinking water consumption and drinking water production, the water quality index (WQI), the heavy metal pollution (HPI) and the heavy metal evaluation (HEI) were calculated. The poor quality of the water was mainly related to pesticides, organic matter and microbiological parameters. most of the nutrients and metals studied were often below the standards of drinking water and aquatic life. In irrigation schemes under rotational water supply in semiarid region, the water allocation and irrigation scheduling are often based on a fixed-area proportionate water depth with every irrigation cycle irrespective of crops and their growth stages, for an equitable water supply. An experiment was conducted during the 2004- 2005 season in Haouz irrigated area in morocco, which objective was i) to evaluate the effects of the surface irrigation scheduling method (existing rule) adopted by the irrigation agency on winter wheat production compared to a full irrigation method and ii) to evaluate drip irrigation versus surface irrigation impacts on water saving and yield of winter wheat. The methodology was based on the FAO-56 dual approach for the surface irrigation scheduling. Ground measurements of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were used to derive the basal crop coefficient and the vegetation fraction cover. The simple FAO-56 approach was used for drip irrigation scheduling. For surface irrigation, the existing rule approach resulted in yield and WUE reductions of 22% and 15%, respectively, compared with the optimized irrigation scheduling proposed by the FAO-56 for full irrigation treatment. This revealed the negative effects of the irrigation schedules adopted in irrigation schemes under rotational water supply on crops productivity. It was also demon-strated that drip irrigation applied to wheat was more efficient with 20% of water saving in comparison with surface irrigation (full irrigation treatment). Drip irrigation gives also higher wheat yield compared to surface irrigation (+28% and +52% for full irrigation and existing rule treatments respectively). The same improvement was observed for water use efficiency (+24 and +59% respectively).
