Bifunctional catalysts of Co3O4@GCN tubular nanostructured （TNS） hybrids for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions

Catalysts for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions （OER/HER） are at the heart of renewable green energy sources such as water splitting. Although incredible efforts have been made to develop efficient catalysts for OER and HER, great challenges still remain in the development of bifunctional catalysts. Here, we report a novel hybrid of Co3O4 embedded in tubular nanostructures of graphitic carbon nitride （GCN） and synthesized through a facile, large-scale chemical method at low temperature. Strong synergistic effects between Co3O4 and GCN resulted in excellent performance as a bifunctional catalyst for OER and HER. The high surface area, unique tubular nanostructure, and composition of the hybrid made all redox sites easily available for catalysis and provided faster ionic and electronic conduction. The Co3O4@GCN tubular nanostructured （TNS） hybrid exhibited the lowest overpotential （0.12 V） and excellent current density （147 mA/cm^2） in OER, better than benchmarks IrO2 and RuO2, and with superior durability in alkaline media. Furthermore, the Co3O4@GCN TNS hybrid demonstrated excellent performance in HER, with a much lower onset and overpotential, and a stable current density. It is expected that the Co3O4@GCN TNS hybrid developed in this study will be an attractive alternative to noble metals catalysts in large scale water splitting and fuel cells.

Electrochemical water splitting needs catalysts made from earth-abundant elements to effectively drive the hydrogen evolution reaction（HER） and oxygen evolution reaction（OER） [1]. more recently, we have put great efforts to make non-noble metal HER and OER catalalysts [2-8]. To sustain overall water splitting, both HER and OER must be operated in the same electrolyte to minimize the overpotentials, and using a bifunctional catalyst for simultaneous generation of H2 and O2 can simplify the system and lower the cost. It is thus attractive but still remains a big challenge to develop noble-metal-free bifunctional catalysts efficient for both reactions [9,10]. Herein, we report our recent finding that Zn0.76Co0.24S/Co S2 nanowires array on Ti mesh（Zn-Co-S/Tm）, topotactically derived from Zn Co2O4 nanowires array precursor, behaves as a durable bifunctional HER and OER catalyst in strongly alkaline electrolytes with superior activity. This Zn-Co-S/Tm electrode affords 20 m A cm-2 at 238 m V HER overpotential and 20 m A cm-2 at 330 m V OER overpotential. The two-electrode alkaline water-splitting system based on Zn-Co-S/Tm achieves 10 m A cm-2 at a cell voltage of 1.66 V. This research points out the direction of developing transition metal sulfides nanostructures as full water-splitting catalytic materials toward large-scale production of hydrogen fuels for applications.

A Survey on the methods of Primer Design Among Plant Pathologists in Australia and New Zealand

Designing primers for PCR-based diagnostics was achieved by executing sight searches on DNA sequences. Visual searching for specific DNA targets is time consuming, subjective and requires optimisation among numerous candidate primer sets. Several primer design software have been linked to useful bioinformatic packages to speed the development of PCR assays. Despite the software options available, primer design has remained a challenging aspect of incursion responses, biosecurity emergencies and microbial forensic applications. Two surveys were conducted among 45 plant virologists and 21 other plant pathologists during the 7th Australasian Plant Virology Workshop and the 16th Biennial Australasian Plant Pathology Conference in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Results show that most primer design learning occurs scientist to scientist rather than during academic teaching. This tendency matches with 16% of scientists users of PCR, who do not engage in primer design and 25% designing primers only by visual means, combining a pool of 41% who if trained, would likely enhance their performance in primer design. Only 13 out of 58 scientists ranked themselves as experts. Implementing primer design in study programs and regional training will benefit plant pathology and entomology, and the responsiveness and performance of biosecurity and microbial forensics in the South Pacific.

Low temperature fuel cells are an attractive technology for transportation and residential applica-tions due to their quick start up and shut down capabilities. This review analyzed the current status of nanocatalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells and alkaline membrane fuel cells. The preparation process influences the performance of the nanocatalyst. Several synthesis methods are covered for noble and non-noble metal catalysts on various catalyst supports including carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, nanowires, and graphenes. Ex situ and in situ characterization methods like scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and fuel cell testing of the nanocatalysts on various supports for both proton exchange and alkaline membrane fuel cells are discussed. The accelerated durability estimate of the nanocat-alysts, predicted by measuring changes in the electrochemically active surface area using a voltage cycling method, is considered one of the most reliable and valuable method for establishing durabil-ity.

Carbon Nanotubes/metal Nanoparticle Based Nanocomposites: Improvements in Visible Photoluminescence Emission and Hydrophobicity

In this work, we present a study of growth and characterization of nanocomposites, based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes and metal nanoparticles (Al, Ag, Au, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni and Ti). We observe a very different behavior between noble and transitions metals. All the nanocomposites are characterized by a network of carbon nanotubes with randomly insertion of spherical metal particles with dimensions of about 100 nm (clearly visible in SEm images). In particular, in transition metal nanocomposites, each tube on sheet surface is covered by particles of about 40 - 50 nm and for all metals the XPS measurements indicate the absence of chemical bonds and the simply physisorption of nanoparticle on carbon nanotube buckypaper. Furthermore, the nanocomposites show very different properties respect to pure carbon nanotubes: they are hydrophobic, their roughness is about 50% smaller than carbon nanotube and they exhibit a strong visible photoluminescence, which is absent in pure nanotube.
