Design Optim.zation of Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger by Vibration Analysis

In this paper a sim.lified approach to optim.ze the design of Shell Tube Heat Exchanger [STHE] by flow induced vibration analysis [FVA] is presented. The vibration analysis of STHE helps in achieving optim.zation in design by prevention of tube failure caused due to flow induced vibration. The m.in reason for tube failure due to flow induced vibration is increased size of STHE. It is found that in case of increased size of STHE, the surface area and num.er of tubes increases, thus the understanding and analysis of vibration becom.s a very difficult task. Again it is found that flow induced vibration analysis is considered as an integral part of m.chanical & therm.l design of STHE. The detailed design, fabrication, testing and analysis work was carried out at Alfa Laval (India), Ltd., Pune-10.

Detecting Power Im.alance in m.lti-Cylinder Inline Diesel Engine Genset

A m.del of fuel injection adjustm.nt for balancing the 4-stroke six cylinder diesel engine coupling geneset is developed by detecting im.alance in operating engine by the frequency analysis of the crankshaft＇s speed variation. In this work, the crankshaft is considered to be a rigid body, so that the variation of its angular speed could be directly correlated to the total gas-pressure torque. By analyzing only the lower harm.nic orders, the speed variation spectrum.can filter out the distortions produced by the dynam.c response of the crankshaft. The inform.tion carried by these harm.nic orders perm.ts to establish correlations between m.asurem.nts and the average gas pressure torque of the engine, and to detect im.alance and identify faulty cylinders. Detailed experim.ntal reading are taken on diesel engine coupling genset on the test bed of Greaves Cotton Ltd Pane, India.
