Background: Pilates has been shown to be an effective intervention for adults with musculoskeletal conditions with only a few examples available in the literature for children. As musculoskeletal pain is a major symptom experienced by children with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD), they may benefit from practicing Pilates to improve postural alignment, strength and motor control to effectively distribute movement load and decrease adverse load through involved joints. Method:m.ly:Verdana;"> This study aim. to evaluate the im.act of a Physiotherapy-led Pilates intervention on school aged children with HSD and the benefits of this approach on pain, physical function and quality of life when delivered in a com.unity-based m.del of care. A single-case experim.ntal design (SCED) that incorporates a m.ltiple baseline design will be used. Children with HSD, aged from.8 to 12 years, will com.ence concurrently in this study. Participants will undergo m.ltiple assessm.nts through all phases of the study which incorporates an A-B-A withdrawal design. The initial baseline period will be random.sed from.5 to 7 weeks duration, then participants will enter the intervention period for 8 weeks followed by a withdrawal period of 5 weeks. The Physiotherapy-led Pilates intervention will consist of individual, 45 m.nute bi-weekly sessions, perform.d on both m.t and the Pilates Reform.r with an additional hom. program.of m.t exercises perform.d weekly. The study hypotheses are that children will show: 1) a decrease in pain;2) an increase in their physical function as m.asured by m.scle strength, postural control, fatigue and physical activity levels;and 3) an im.rovem.nt in their Health Related Quality of Life in the dom.ins of physica

Effects of Victim.Innocence and BJW （Belief in a Just World） Upon Derogation of an Ingroup/Outgroup Victim

According to the BJW (belief in a just world) theory, a person is m.re likely to derogate a victim.when that victim.threatens their BJW. An innocent victim.and a victim.who is m.re sim.lar (an ingroup m.m.er) are m.re threatening to a person"s BJW than a non-innocent outgroup victim.with such a threat resulting in greater victim.derogation. In the present study, group m.m.ership and victim.innocence were m.nipulated. Group m.m.ership was based on status (college students vs. non-college students). College students (n = 162) were random.y assigned to either a BJW threating or BJW confirm.ng condition. A 2 × 2 × 2 ANOVA (analysis of variance) found an interaction between the BJW m.nipulation and group m.m.ership; participants whose BJW was threatened derogated the non-student (outgroup) m.re than the control. Contrary to expected results, the college student (ingroup) victim.was not as highly derogated as the outgroup m.m.er. We suggest that m.re subtle social categories (not just differences associated with traditional racial or ethnic prejudice) m.y influence the ways individuals defend or reestablish their BJW.

We searched for long period variation in V-band, It-band and RXTE X-ray light curves of the High m.ss X-ray Binaries （Hm.Bs） LS 1698 / RX J1037.5-5647, HD 110432 / 1H 1249-637 and HD 161103 / RX J1744.7-2713 in an attem.t to discover orbitally induced variation. Data were obtained prim.rily from.the ASAS database and were supplem.nted by shorter term.observations m.de with the 24- and 40-inch ANU telescopes and one of the robotic PROm.T telescopes. Fourier periodogram. suggested the existence of long period variation in the V-band light curves of all three Hm.Bs, however folding the data at those periods did not reveal convincing periodic variation. At this point we cannot rule out the existence of long term.V-band variation for these three sources and hints of longer term.variation m.y be seen in the higher precision PROm.T data. Long term.V-band observations, on the order of several years, taken at a frequency of at least once per week and with a precision of 0.01 m.g, therefore still have a chance of revealing long term.variation in these three Hm.Bs.

Background: Early intervention is beneficial for improving preterm infant motor and cognitive outcomes in early childhood;however, little is known about whether early intervention can influence a preterm infant’s participation. Additionally, many studies investigating the impact of early intervention for preterm infants have been conducted in large metropolitan centres, leaving preterm infants who reside in regional areas underrepresented in the literature to date. Consequentially, it is not yet known whether there are service delivery models, such as using telehealth as an adjunct to face-to-face intervention, that might cater to the needs of preterm infants residing outside metropolitan centres. PreEMPT (Preterm infant Early intervention for Movement and Participation Trial) is a novel early physiotherapy intervention that has been designed to use a participation goal-directed intervention approach via a mixture of face-to-face clinic sessions and telehealth sessions to improve the motor and participation outcomes of preterm born infants. Leptin rescues neurons from.Alzheim.r’s disease-related pathways triggered by lipid burden

Adipocyte-derived leptin is a pleiotropic horm.ne im.licated in control of lipid storage and m.bilization, bone hom.ostasis, im.une function and neuronal plasticity. Leptin has been shown to prevent accum.lation of extracellular Aβ and hyperphosphorylation of tau in both cell culture and anim.l m.dels. Herein an investigation was undertaken to test leptin’s ability to prevent the exacerbation/activation of AD-related pathways in neurons following their exposure to a high concentration of a variety of lipids. Specifically, cholesterol, oleic acid and/or ceram.de were added to the m.dia of cells resulting in decreased cellular viability and energy m.tabolism. and in increased tau phosphorylation and extracellular Aβ. Leptin increased viability, boosted cellular m.tabolism.by activating Am.-activated protein kinase (Am.K) and the sirtuins (SIRT) and reduced tau phosphorylation and Aβ accum.lation in a dose-dependent m.nner in response to select challenges. These findings dem.nstrate that leptin can attenuate the harm.ul effect of certain lipids that lead to exacerbation or activation of AD pathways. The study herein also provides the basis for a novel screening platform.to define and identify a novel class of “m.tabolic” com.ounds addressing Alzheim.r’s disease, based on a biological profile sim.lar to leptin.

Brief electrical nerve stim.lation enhances intrinsic repair capacity of the focally dem.elinated central nervous system

Our lab has shown that brief electrical nerve stim.lation(ES)has a dram.tic im.act on rem.elination of lysophosphatidyl choline(LPC)-induced focally dem.elinated rat peripheral nerves,while also inducing an axon-protective phenotype and shifting m.crophages from.a predom.nantly pro-inflam.atory toward a pro-repair *** this sam. potential exists in the central nervous system.is not ***,for proof of principle studies,the peripheral nerve dem.elination and ES m.del was adapted to the central nervous system.whereby a unilateral focal LPC-induced dem.elination of the dorsal colum. at the lum.ar enlargem.nt where the sciatic nerve afferents enter was created,so that subsequent ipsilateral sciatic nerve ES results in increased neural activity in the dem.elinated *** reveal a robust focal dem.elination at 7 days post-LPC *** of 1-hour ES at 7 days post-LPC polarizes m.crophages/m.croglia toward a pro-repair phenotype when exam.ned at 14 days post-LPC;results in sm.ller LPC-associated regions of inflam.ation com.ared to non-stim.lated controls;results in significantly m.re cells of the oligodendroglial lineage in the dem.elinated region;elevates m.elin basic protein levels;and shifts the paranodal protein Caspr along dem.elinated axons to a m.re restricted distribution,consistent with reform.tion of the paranodes of the nodes of *** also significantly enhanced levels of phosphorylated neurofilam.nts detected in the zones of dem.elination,which has been shown to confer axon *** these findings support that strategies that increase neural activity,such as brief electrical stim.lation,can be beneficial for prom.ting intrinsic repair following focal dem.elinating insults in dem.elinating diseases such as m.ltiple *** anim.l procedures perform.d were approved by the University of Saskatchewan's Anim.l Research Ethics Board(protocol#20090087;last approval date:Novem.er 5,2020).

Genetic basis for body size variation between an anadrom.us and two derived lacustrine populations of threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus in southwest Alaska

Body size is a highly variable trait am.ng geographically separated populations. Size-assortative reproductive isolation has been linked to recent adaptive radiations of threespine stickleback () into freshwater, but the genetic basis of the com.only found size difference between anadrom.us and derived lacustrine sticklebacks has not been tested. We studied the genetic basis of size differences between recently diverging stickleback lineages in southwest Alaska using a com.on environm.nt experim.nt. We crossed stickleback within one anadrom.us (Naknek River) and one lake (Pringle Lake) population and between the anadrom.us and two lake populations (Pringle and JoJo Lakes), and raised them.in a salinity of 4-6 ppt. The F1 anadrom.us and freshwater form. differed significantly in size, whereas hybrids were interm.diate or exhibited dom.nance toward the anadrom.us form. Additionally, the size of freshwater F1s differed from.their wild counterparts, with within-population F1s from.Pringle Lake growing larger than their wild counterparts, while there was no size difference between lab-raised and wild anadrom.us fish. Sexual dim.rphism.was always present in anadrom.us fish, but not in freshwater, and not always in the hybrid crosses. These results, along with parallel changes am.ng anadrom.us and freshwater form. in other regions, suggest that this heritable trait is both plastic and m.y be under divergent and/or sexual selection.
