Higher fores. coverage on private and.com.unity land. as.com.ared.to governm.nt land.ind.cates.that trad.tional ins.itutions.effectively m.nage com.unity fores.s.in the region. The pres.nt s.ud. was.cond.cted.through a s.rvey of literature and.field.work us.ng participatory res.arch tools.viz., PRA exercis.s. group d.s.us.ions.and.ques.ionnaire interviews.with key inform.nts.in northeas. Ind.a. We categorized.the ins.itutions.involved.in cons.rvation and.m.nagem.nt of fores.s.into three m.jor types. trad.tional, quas.-trad.tional and.m.d.rn. Trad.tional ins.itutions.with hierarchal s.ructure were found.in all s.ates.and.are intact and.functional in the s.ate of m.ghalaya. Quas.-trad.tional ins.itutions. a blend.of trad.tional and.m.d.rn ins.itutions.were prevalent in Nagaland.while m.d.rn ins.itutions.have alm.s. replaced.trad.tional ins.itutions.in m.zoram. We record.d.at leas. eleven types.of com.unity fores.s.viz., group of village fores., village fores., res.ricted.fores., s.cred.fores., clan fores., cem.tery fores., regeneration fores., bam.oo fores., recreation fores., village res.rved.fores. and.m.d.cinal plantation in villages.of three s.ates. The tribal people, through long-term.trial and.error experim.nts. have d.veloped.an elaborate, functional and.generally d.m.cratic s.s.em.of cons.rvation and.m.nagem.nt of fores.s.and.as.ociated.natural ecos.s.em.. s.veral fores. and.natural res.urce m.nagem.nt les.ons.can be learnt from.the ins.itutional s.ructure and.d.cis.on m.king s.s.em.of the evolving and.d.nam.c ins.itutions.of tribal com.unities.of the region.

Us.ng 14C-ring labelled.pes.icid., laboratory s.ud.es.und.r aerobic and.anaerobic cond.tions.were cond.cted. 14C-activity in s.lutions.was.d.rectly d.term.ned.by liquid.s.intillation counting. Unextractable s.il res.d.es.were d.term.ned.by com.us.ion. The nature of m.thanolic '4C-res.d.es.was.d.term.ned.by thin layer and.high perform.nce liquid.chrom.tographic analys.s. Res.lts.Und.r aerobic cond.tions.10%-14% of applied.d.s. was.m.neralized.d.ring 90 d.irres.ective of s.il type. The s.il extractable pes.icid. res.d.es.d.creas.d.with tim. and.the bound.res.d.es.grad.ally increas.d. The highes. bind.ng capacity of about 26%-29% was.obs.rved.in clay s.il und.r aerobic cond.tions.after 90 d. A good.balance s.eet was.obtained.and.the percentage recovery was.generally between 91% and.100%. Conclus.on The m.neralization of 2,4-d.in clay s.il was.higher than that in clay loam.s.il und.r anaerobic cond.tions. Und.r aerobic cond.tions. the s.il type had.no influence on m.neralizaion capacity of 2,4-d.d.ring 90 d. The s.il bind.ng increas.d.with tim. whereby the extractable 14C-res.d.es.s.m.ltaneous.y d.creas.d. Chrom.tographic analys.s.of the m.thanol extractable l4C-res.d.es.of s.ils.revealed.the pres.nce of 2,4-d.as.a m.in prod.ct together with 2,4-d.chlorophenol.

Pas.hen curves.and.current-voltage characteris.ics. The bes. agreem.nt with the experim.ntal d.ta for the Pas.hen curve m.d.ling is.achieved.by us.ng the m.d.l with variable s.cond.ry electron yield. The m.d.ling of current-voltage characteris.ics.is.perform.d.for d.fferent inter-electrod. d.s.ances.and.the res.lts.are com.ared.with the experim.ntal d.ta. The fluid.m.d.l with nonlocal ionization s.ows.an excellent agreem.nt for all inter-electrod. d.s.ances. while the extend.d.fluid.m.d.l with variable electron trans.ort coefficients.agrees.well with m.as.rem.nts.at s.ort inter-electrod. d.s.ances.when ionization by fas. electrons.can be neglected.

In this.s.ud., we us. s.atis.ical and.geos.atial m.d.ling on d.ns.ly s.m.le.d.fores. biom.s. d.ta to analyze the relative im.ortance of ecological and.phys.ographic variables.as.d.term.nants.of s.atial variation of fores. biom.s. in the environm.ntally heterogeneous.region of the Big s.r, California. We es.im.ted.biom.s. in 280 fores. Plots.（one plot per 2.85 km.） and.m.as. ured.an array of ecological （vegetation com.unity type, d.s.ance to ed.e, am.unt of s.rround.ng non-fores. vegetation, s.il properties. fire his.ory） and.phys.ographic d.ivers.（elevation, potential s.il m.is.ure and.s.lar rad.ation, proxim.ty to the coas.） of tree growth at each plot location. Our geos.atis.ical analys.s.revealed.that biom.s. d.s.ribution is.s.atially s.ructured.and.autocorrelated.up to 3.1 kin. Regres.ion tree （RT） m.d.ls.s.owed.that both phys.ographic and.ecological factors.influenced.bio- m.s. d.s.ribution. Acros. rand.m.y s.lected.s.m.le d.ns.ties.（s.m.le s.ze 112 to 280）, ecological effects.of vegetation com.unity type and.d.s.ance to fores. ed.e, and.phys.ographic effects.of elevation, potential s.il m.is.ure and.s.lar rad.ation were the m.s. cons.s.ent pred.ctors.of biom.s.. Topographic m.is.ure ind.x and.potential s.lar rad.ation had.apos.tive effect on biom.s., ind.cating the im.ortance of topographically- m.d.ated.energy and.m.is.ure on plant growth and.biom.s. accum.la- tion. The long-term.red.s.ribution of Zn in a naturally Zn-enriched.s.il d.ring ped.genes.s.was.quantified.bas.d.on m.s. balance calculations. Accord.ng to their fate, parent lim.s.ones.com.ris.d.three Zn pools. bound.to calcite and.pyrites.halerite grains. bound.to phyllos.licates.and.bound.to goethite in the inherited.phos.hate nod.les. Four ped.logical proces.es. i.e., carbonate d.s.olution, two s.ages.of red.x proces.es.and.eluviation, red.s.ributed.Zn d.ring ped.genes.s. The carbonate d.s.olution of lim.s.ones.releas.d.Zn bound.to calcite into s.il s.lution. d.e to res.d.al enrichm.nt, Zn concentrations.in the s.il are higher than thos. in parent lim.s.ones. Birnes.ite, ferrihyd.ite and.goethite d.s.ers.d.in s.il horizon trapped.high quantities.of Zn d.ring their form.tion. Afterward., prim.ry red.x cond.tions.ind.ced.the releas. of Zn and.Fe into s.il s.lution, and.the s.bs.quent ind.vid.alization of Fe and.m. into Zn-rich concretions. Both proces.es.and.s.bs.quent aging of the concretions.form.d.ind.ced.s.gnificant exportation of Zn through the bottom.water table. s.cond.ry red.x cond.tions.prom.ted.the weathering of Fe and.m. oxid.s.in cem.nts.and.concretions. This.proces. caus.d.other los.es.of Zn through lateral exportation in an upper water table. Concom.tantly, eluviation occurred.at the top of the s.lum. The lateral exportation of eluviated.m.nerals.through the upper water table lim.ted.illuviation. Eluviation was.als. res.ons.ble for Zn los., but this.Zn bound.to phyllos.licates.was.not bioavailable.

In this.work, a friction and.wear s.m.lator was.us.d.to reprod.ce the Anterior-Pos.erior （AP） s.id.ng and.the Flex- ion-Extens.on （FE） rotation generated.in the knee joint d.ring hum.n gait cycle. We chos. to s.m.lify the contact geom.try between the Total Knee Arthroplas.y （TKA） fem.ral com.onent and.tibial ins.rt. A 304L s.ainles. s.eel cylind.r which replaces.the fem.ral com.onent was.load.d.onto a flat High d.ns.ty Polyethylene （Hd.E） block which replaces.the tibial ins.rt. The tribological behavior of the cons.d.red.contact was.analyzed.by tracking the num.er of cycles. the friction coefficient, the roughnes. of the wear track on Hd.E, the Hd.E weight los. and.the d.m.ge m.chanis.1}. The friction coefficient s.ows.a grad.al increas. with the num.er of cycles.for both AP and.FE kinem.tics. The evolution of friction coefficient with the num.er of cycles.is.not affected.by the value of the im.os.d.norm.l load.in the cas. of AP s.id.ng. For the FE rotation, d.creas.d.friction coefficient is.obtained.when the im.os.d.norm.l load.increas.s. For both cons.d.red.AP and.FE kinem.tics. the roughnes. of the wear track on the Hd.E is.not affected.by the im.os.d.norm.l load. It s.ows.a progres.ive d.creas. when the num.er of cycles.increas.s. The wear of Hd.E obeys.the Archard.law and.the wear coefficient increas.s.with the norm.l force. For a given value of norm.l load. the obtained.wear coefficient for the AP s.id.ng is.larger than that obtained.for FE rotation. A pred.m.nant ad.es.ve wear m.chanis.1}was.id.ntified.for both AP and.FE kinem.tics. Und.r the s.m. norm.l load. d.m.ge d.velopm.nt in term. of plas.ic d.form.tion, m.cro-cracking and.d.bond.ng is.m.re pronounced.for the AP s.id.ng if com.ared.with the FE rotation. For a given kinem.tics. the d.m.ge s.verity increas.s.with the norm.l load. This.find.ng is.in good.agreem.nt with the pred.cted.values.of the wear coefficient accord.ng to the Archard.law.

The m.xed.low-grad. ores.were d.rectly s.1}lted.in an elevator furnace at s.1}lting tem.eratures.ranging from.1550 to 1600 ℃. s.1}lting experim.nts.were cond.cted.in a laboratory elevator furnace equipped.with 8 U-s.aped.high- quality m.lybd.num.d.s.licid. heating elem.nts. A low-grad. coal was.us.d.as.the red.ctant. Experim.ntal res.lts.s.owed.that the recovery of Fe, Cr, Ni, m. and.s. within the alloy increas.d.from.34.22, 60.27, 57.14, 25.42 and.13.02% to 69.91, 99.26, 86.02, 60.8 and.34.21%, res.ectively, when the tem.erature was.increas.d.from.1550 to 1600 ℃. There was.a general increas. in the total recoveries.of Fe, Cr, and.Ni in the alloy with CaO ad.ition increas.ng from.0.4 g up to 1.2 g. However, the recoveries.of m. and.s. vivid.y d.creas.d.as.the CaO contents.were increas.d. In general, the recoveries.of the m.tal contents.of the crud. alloy increas. with the increas. in the am.unt of m.nganes. ore. Com.ared.to the recoveries.of Fe, Cr, and.Ni when CaO was.ad.ed. the recoveries.of Fe, Cr and.Ni were lower when m.nganes. ore was.us.d.as.an ad.itive.

However, d.tailed.petrographic and.geochem.cal characters.of the coals.have not been d.ne s. far. This.inves.igation is.an attem.t for petrographic and.geochem.cal apprais.l of the coals. m.reover, effort is.als. m.d. for pos.ible interpretation on d.velopm.nt of coal facies. The res.lts.d.awn from.30 com.os.te coal s.m.les.s.gges. coals.are rich in vitrinite, with collotelinite as.the d.m.nant m.ceral while liptinite m.cerals.regis.er low concentration. d.m.nant m.neral as.em.lages.found.were clay m.nerals. pyrite was.record.d.as.d.s.em.nated. fram.oid.l and.euhed.al form., carbonates.record.d.were m.inly s.d.rites. The vitrinite reflectance rand.m.（VRo） m.an values.range from.0.44 % to 0.56 %, and.the rank of coal is.s.gges.ed.as.high volatile ＇B＇ to ＇A＇ s.b- bitum.nous.in rank. The rock-eval pyrolys.s.reveal TOC content varying from.37 % to 68.83 %, while low hyd.ocarbon generating potential is.evid.nt from.low $2 and.Tm.x values. The Hyd.ogen Ind.x （HI） vers.s.Oxygen Ind.x （OI） plot reveal that the s.m.les.belong to Kerogen type--II-III with input d.m.nantly from.terres.rial s.urce, s.m. s.m.les.als. fall in Kerogen type--II d.m.in ind.cating lacus.rine input. Vitrinite reflectance res.lt ind.cate that the s.m.les.are im.ature and.approaching oil wind.w, which is.in agreem.nt with d.ta of the Rock-Eval param.ters.
