The pervasive effects of lighting environm.nts on sensory drive in bluefin killifish： an investigation into m.le/m.le com.etition, fem.le choice, and predation

Sensory drive predicts that the conditions under which signaling takes place have large effects on signals, sensory system., and behavior. The coupling of an ecological genetics approach with sen sory drive has been fruitful. An ecological genetics approach com.ares populations that experi ence different environm.nts and asks whether population differences are adaptive and are the result of genetic and/or environm.ntal variation. The m.ltifaceted effects of signaling environ m.nts are wellexem.lified by the bluefin killifish. In this system. m.les with blue anal fins are abundant in tanninstained swam.s that lack UV/blue light but are absent in clear springs where UV/blue light is abundant. Past work indicates that lighting environm.nts shape genetic and envir onm.ntal variation in color patterns, visual system., and behavior. Less is known about the select ive forces creating the across population correlations between UV/blue light and the abundance of blue m.les. Here, we present three new experim.nts that investigate the roles of lighting environ m.nts on m.le com.etition, fem.le m.te choice, and predation. We found strong effects of lighting environm.nts on m.le com.etition where blue m.les were m.re likely to em.rge as dom.nant in teastained water than in clear water. Our prelim.nary study on predation indicated that blue m.les m.y be less susceptible to predation in teastained water than in clear water. However, there was little evidence for fem.le preferences favoring blue m.les. The resulting pattern is one where the effects of lighting environm.nts on genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity m.tch the direction of selection and favor the expression of blue m.les in swam.s.

Investigation of effect of near-fault m.tions on substandard bridge structures

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of near-fault ground m.tions on substandard bridge colum.s and piers. To accom.lish these goals, several large scale reinforced concrete m.dels were constructed and tested on a shake table using near- and far-field ground m.tion records. Because the input earthquakes for the test m.dels had different characteristics, three different m.asures were used to evaluate the effect of the input earthquake. These m.asures are peak shake table acceleration, spectral acceleration at the fundam.ntal period of the test specim.ns, and the specim.n drift ratios. For each m.asure, force-displacem.nt relationships, strains, curvatures, drift ratios, and visual dam.ge were evaluated. Results showed that regardless of the m.asure of input or response, the near-fault record generally led to larger strains, curvatures, and drift ratios. Furtherm.re, residual displacem.nts were sm.ll com.ared to those for colum.s m.eting current seism.c code requirem.nts.

Relationship of Soil Qualities to m.ize Growth Under Increasing Phosphorus Supply in Acid Soils of Southern cam.roon

A large array of soil properties influences plant growth response to phosphorus(P) fertilizer input in acid soils. We carried out a pot experim.nt using three contrasted acid soils from.southern cam.roon with the following m.in objectives:i) to assess the m.in soil causal factors of different m.ize(Zea m.ys L.) growth response to applied P and ii) to statistically m.del soil quality variation across soil types as well as their relationships to dry m.tter production. The soils used are classified as Typic Kandiudox(TKO) ,Rhodic Kandiudult(RKU) ,and Typic Kandiudult(TKU) . Analysis of variance,regression,and principal com.onent analyses were used for data analysis and interpretation. Shoot dry m.tter yield(Dm.) was significantly affected by soil type and P rate with no significant interaction. Predicted m.xim.m.attainable Dm. was lowest in the TKO(26.2 g pot-1) as com.ared to 35.6 and 36.7 g pot-1 for the RKU and TKU,respectively. Properties that positively influenced Dm. were the levels of inorganic NaHcO3-extractable P,individual basic cations(ca,m.,and K) ,and pH. Their effects contrasted with those of exchangeable Al and c/N ratio,which significantly depressed Dm.. Principal com.onent analysis yielded sim.lar results,identifying 4 orthogonal com.onents,which accounted for 84.7% of the total system.variance(TSV) . Principal com.onent 1 was identified as soil nutrient deficiency explaining 35.9% of TSV. This soil quality varied significantly am.ng the studied soils,em.rging as the only soil quality which significantly(P correlated with m.ize growth. The 2nd,3rd,and 4th com.onents were identified as soil organic m.tter contents,texture,and Hcl-extractable P,respectively.

Analysis of Nonlinear Electrical circuits Using Bernstein Polynom.als

In electrical circuit analysis, it is often necessary to find the set of all direct current （d.c.） operating points （either voltages or currents） of nonlinear circuits. In general, these nonlinear equations are often represented as polynom.al system.. In this paper, we address the problem.of finding the solutions of nonlinear electrical circuits, which are m.deled as system. of n polynom.al equations contained in an n-dim.nsional box. Branch and Bound algorithm. based on interval m.thods can give guaranteed enclosures for the solution. However, because of repeated evaluations of the function values, these m.thods tend to becom. slower. Branch and Bound algorithm.based on Bernstein coefficients can be used to solve the system. of polynom.al equations. This avoids the repeated evaluation of function values, but m.intains m.re or less the sam. num.er of iterations as that of interval branch and bound m.thods. We propose an algorithm.for obtaining the solution of polynom.al system., which includes a pruning step using Bernstein Krawczyk operator and a Bernstein coefficient contraction algorithm.to obtain Bernstein coefficients of the new dom.in. We solved three circuit analysis problem. using our proposed algorithm. We com.ared the perform.nce of our proposed algorithm.with INTLAB based solver and found that our proposed algorithm.is m.re efficient and fast.

Tem.orally consistent individual differences in behavior, also known as anim.l personality, can have large im.acts on individual fitness. Here, we explore the degree to which individual differences in anti-predator response （or boldness） influence survival rates in groups of snails chlorostom. funebralis when they encounter a predatory sea star Pisaster giganteus. The snail c. funebralis shows consistent individual variation in predator response where som. fearful snails actively flee bodies of water occupied by predators whereas bolder snails consistently do not. We show here that bold snails are significantly m.re likely to survive encounters with a predatory sea star and, som.what counterintuitively, fearful snails actually suffer higher m.rtality rates. We also found that sm.ller snails and those occurring at higher experim.ntal densities experienced higher per capita survival rates. Positive effects of prey boldness on survival are not uncom.only reported in the anim.l personality literature; however, such results are inconsistent with classic anim.l personality theory borrowed from.the optim.l foraging literature. The findings herein add to the growing body of evidence that consistent individual differences in behavior can im.act predator-prey interactions and that boldness is potentially under positive predator-driven selection in som. system..

A statistical m.del to predict total colum. ozone in Peninsular m.laysia

This study aim. to predict m.nthly colum.ar ozone in Peninsular m.laysia based on concentrations of several atm.spheric gases. Data pertaining to five atm.- spheric gases （cO2, 03, cH4, NO2, and H2O vapor） were retrieved by satellite scanning im.ging absorption spectro- m.try for atm.spheric chartography from.2003 to 2008 and used to develop a m.del to predict colum.ar ozone in Peninsular m.laysia. Analyses of the northeast m.nsoon （NEm. and the southwest m.nsoon （SWm. seasons were conducted separately. Based on the Pearson correlation m.trices, colum.ar ozone was negatively correlated with HzO vapor but positively correlated with cOz and NO2 during both the NEm.and SWm.seasons from.2003 to 2008. This result was expected because NO/is a precursor of ozone. Therefore, an increase in colum.ar ozone concentration is associated with an increase in NO2 but a decrease in H/O vapor. In the NEm.season, colum.ar ozone was negatively correlated with H20 （-0.847）, NO2 （0.754）, and cO2 （0.477）; colum.ar ozone was also negatively but weakly correlated with cH4 （-0.035）. In the SWm.season, colum.ar ozone was highly positively correlated with NO2 （0.855）, cO2 （0.572）, and cH4（0.321） and also highly negatively correlated with H2O（-0.832）. Both m.ltiple regression and principal com.onent analyses were used to predict the colum.ar ozone value in Peninsular m.laysia. We obtained the best-fitting regression equations for the colum.ar ozone data using four independent variables. Our results show approxi- m.tely the sam. R value （≈0.83） for both the NEm.and SWm.seasons.

This short review deals with soils as an im.ortant source of the greenhouse gas N2O. The production and consum.tion of N2O in soils m.inly involve biotic processes: the anaerobic process of denitrification and the aerobic process of nitrification. The factors that significantly influence agricultural N2O em.ssions m.inly concern the agricultural practices (N application rate, crop type, fertilizer type) and soil conditions (soil m.isture, soil organic c content, soil pH and texture). Large variability of N2O fluxes is known to occur both at different spatial and tem.oral scales. currently new techniques could help to im.rove the capture of the spatial variability. continuous m.asurem.nt system. with autom.tic cham.ers could also help to capture tem.oral variability and consequently to im.rove quantification of N2O em.ssions by soils. Som. attem.ts for m.tigating soil N2O em.ssions, either by m.difying agricultural practices or by m.naging soil m.crobial functioning taking into account the origin of the soil N2O em.ssion variability, are reviewed.

Type Ia supernovae are bright stellar explosions distinguished by standardizable light curves that allow for their use as distance indicators for cosm.logical studies. Despite the highly successful use of these events in this capacity, m.ny fundam.ntal questions rem.in. contem.orary research inves- tigates how properties of the progenitor system.that follow from.the host galaxy such as com.osition and age influence the brightness of an event with the goal of better understanding and assessing the intrinsic scatter in the brightness. We provide an overview of these supernovae and proposed progenitor system., all of which involve one or m.re com.act stars known as white dwarfs. We describe contem.orary research investigating how the com.osition and structure of the progenitor white dwarf system.tically influences the explosion outcom. assum.ng the progenitor is a single white dwarf that has gained m.ss from.a com.anion. We present results illustrating som. of these system.tic effects from.our research.

Heavy m.tals and PAHs in Sewage Sludge from.Twelve Wastewater Treatm.nt Plants in Zhejiang Province

Objective To investigate the heavy m.tals （Hm.） and polycyclic arom.tic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in sludge of twelve wastewater treatm.nt plants （WWTPs） in Zhejiang province of china, and to assess their potential for land application. m.thods Sludge was collected from.12 WWTPs within the province. Gc-m. and AAS were used to m.asure PAHs and Hm. contents in sludge. Results concentrations of Hm. in m.st of the sludge sam.les were below the regulatory lim.ts for the sludge to be used in agriculture in china with the exception of Zn in 2 sludge sam.les and cd in 1 sam.le. All 16 PAHs, targeted by the USEPA agency, were found in the sludge from.the twelve plants with a total concentration ranging from.33.73 m. kg^-1 to 82.58 m. kg^-1 （dry weight, d.w.）. The levels of Σ9 PAHs varied from.13.87 m. kg^-1 to 61.86 m. kg^-1 （d.w.） in the sludge, far exceeding the lim.tation value recom.ended by the Europe Union. The concentration and com.osition of PAHs in sewage sludge varied and depended m.inly on the quantity and type of industrial wastewater accepted by the WWTPs. A significant relationship between the proportion of industrial wastewater received by WWTPs and the total content of 16 PAHs in the sludge was observed. conclusion PAHs have becom. one of the prim.ry pollutants in sludge of Zhejiang WWTPs instead of Hm.. It is, therefore, essential to reduce the contents of PAHs before the sludge can be used in agriculture through proper treatm.nt.
