BACKGROUND Prim.ry thum. carpom.tacarpal(Cm.)osteoarthritis is one of the m.st com.on conditions encountered by hand *** the vast num.er of operations that have been proposed,none have dem.nstrated results significantly superior to trapeziectom. *** The purpose of our study was to determ.ne why surgeons opt for their technique in treating Cm. *** A cross-sectional survey of active m.m.ers of the Am.rican Society for Surgery of the Hand was conducted to evaluate the reasons behind their preferred technique in the treatm.nt of isolated thum. Cm. *** were contacted by em.il once and provided with a link to a de-identified survey consisting of 5 treatm.nt questions and 5 dem.graphic *** Of 950 responses were received.40.5%of surgeons preferred trapeziectom.+ligam.nt reconstruction tendon interposition(LRTI),followed by trapeziectom.+suspensionplasty(28.2%),suture button suspension(5.9%),trapeziectom. alone(4.6%),prosthetic arthroplasty(3.2%),arthrodesis(1.1%),and other(6.6%).Proponents of trapeziectom.+LRTI cited fam.liarity(73.2%),exposure during fellowship(48.8%)and less proxim.l m.gration(60%)to be the m.in reasons affecting their *** who preferred trapeziectom.+suspensionplasty m.st reported sim.licity(74.9%),fewer com.lications(45.3%),less proxim.l m.gration(43.8%),and avoidance of autogenous tissue ha.vest(42.7%).Advocates of suture button suspension cited avoidance of autogenous tissue ha.vest(80.4%),shorter im.obilization(76.8%),and quicker recovery(73.2%)with their *** of trapeziectom. alone cited sim.licity(97.7%),fewer com.lications(86.4%),and avoidance of autogenous tissue ha.vest(59.1%).In their com.ents,45%of surgeons choosing trapeziectom. alone cited evidence as an additional *** of prosthetic arthroplasty cited im.roved pinch strength(83.3%)and im.roved range of m.tion(63.3%),while those preferring arthrodesis cited better pinch strength(90%)and freque

Neuroscientists have recognized the im.ortance of astrocytes in regulating neurological function and their influence on the release of glial *** studies,however,have focused on the effects of general anesthetic agents on neuroglia or *** can also be an im.ortant target of general anesthetic agents as they exert not only sedative,analgesic,and am.esic effects but also m.diate general anesthetic-induced neurotoxicity and postoperative cognitive ***,we analyzed recent advances in understanding the m.chanism.of general anesthetic agents on astrocytes,and found that exposure to general anesthetic agents will destroy the m.rphology and proliferation of astrocytes,in addition to acting on the receptors on their surface,which not only affect ca^(2+)signaling,inhibit the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and lactate from.astrocytes,but are even involved in the regulation of the pro-and anti-inflam.atory processes of *** would obviously affect the com.unication between astrocytes as well as between astrocytes and neighboring neurons,other neuroglia,and vascular *** this review,we sum.arize how general anesthetic agents act on neurons via astrocytes,and explore potential m.chanism. of action of general anesthetic agents on the nervous *** hope that this review will provide a new direction for m.tigating the neurotoxicity of general anesthetic agents.

Achillea biebersteinii extracts suppress angiogenesis and enhance sensitivity to 5-fluorouracil of hum.n colon cancer cells via the PTEN/AKT/m.OR pathway in vitro

Objective:To investigate the antiproliferative,anti-angiogenic,and apoptotic effects of extracts of Achillea biebersteinii(ABE)and com.ined treatm.nts of ABE with 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)on HT-29 ***:The effects of ABE,5-FU,and com.ined treatm.nts on the viability of HT-29 cells were determ.ned by 3-(4,5-dim.thylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium.brom.de *** analysis was used to determ.ne synergism.between ABE and *** apoptotic and anti-angiogenic effects were determ.ned by cell death detection and hum.n vascular endothelial growth factor ELISA m.thod,*** and translational expressions of p53,Bax,Bcl-2,p38 m.PK,Akt,PTEN,and m.TOR were also evaluated by real-tim. PCR and Western blotting ***:ABE decreased the viability of HT-29 cells in a dosedependent *** treatm.nt of hexane,chloroform.and m.thanol extracts of Achillea biebersteinii with 5-FU at IC50 doses decreased the cell viability to 26.0%,19.1%,and 14.9%,respectively(Pm.re,ABE treatm.nt alone and com.ination with 5-FU,induced apoptosis,significantly downregulated m.TOR,Akt,Bcl-2 expression,upregulated p53,Bax,PTEN,p38 m.PK expression,and exhibited anti-angiogenetic ***:Our findings indicate that ABE shows synergism.with 5-FU and inhibits the proliferation of HT-29 cells by inducing apoptosis and suppressing angiogenesis,which m.y provide biological evidence for further use of ABE in the treatm.nt of colorectal cancer.

Water quality of Kaptai reservoir in Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh

A study was conducted in Kaptai reservoir, one of the largest m.n-m.de freshwater lakes of South-east Asia, to determ.ne present status of water quality and its suitability for fishing and other uses. Water sam.lings were from.m.ddle part of the reservoir at 0.2 and 0.8 fractional depths at five different locations from.upstream.to downstream.viz. Burburichara, m.ichchari, Subolong, Basanthakum. and Rangam.ti. Water analyses show that concentrations of NO3-N, K＋ and total P, and suspended solid at all the sam.ling stations were beyond the recom.ended values for fish culture. Concentrations of Na^＋, ca.2＋, m.^2＋, SO4^2-, Cl^-, total dissolved solid （TDS）, dissolved oxygen （DO） and chem.cal oxygen dem.nd （COD） were within the standards for aquaculture. Concentrations of NO3-N, SO4^2-, K＋ and total P showed no definite trend with depths, locations as well as rainy and dry seasons. Water pH, conductivity, Na^＋ and HCO3- contents were lower in rainy season, and DO and COD higher at alm.st all the locations in both the depths, com.ared with dry season. Total solids and concentrations of TDS, DO, COD, ca.2＋, m.^2＋ and Na^＋ were higher in upstream.and decreased gradually towards downstream.in the reservoir. Concentrations of DO and ca2＋ and pH were higher and m.2＋ less at 0.2-fractional depth than those at 0.8-fractional depth at alm.st all the locations. The reservoir is in m.sotrophic condition containing high concentration of NO3-N and total P, in alarm.ng status with the presence of excessive suspended solids from.urban pollution around the town. It is necessary to adopt m.asures for protecting water quality in the reservoir due to such deteriorations.

Constraints of m.ntle and Crustal Sources Interaction during Orogenesis of Pre-and Post-collision Granitoids from.the Northern Arabian-Nubian Shield:A case Study from.Wadi El-Akhder Granitoids,Southern Sinai,Egypt

The Egyptian older and younger granitic rocks em.laced during pre-and post-collision stages of Neoproterozoic Pan-African orogeny,respectively,are widely distributed in the southern Sinai Peninsula,constituting 70% of the basem.nt *** Wadi El-Akhder,southwestern Sinai,is a m.untainous terrain exposing two granitoid suites,nam.ly the Wadi El-Akhder Older Granites(AOG)and the Hom.a Younger Granites(HYG).The AOG(granodiorites with subordinate tonalite com.ositions)have geochem.cal characteristics of m.dium.K calc-alkaline,m.talum.nous to m.ldly peralum.nous granitoids form.d in an island-arc environm.nt,which are conform.ble with well-known Egyptian older granitoids rocks,whereas the HYG display calc-alkaline to slightly alkaline nature,peralum.nous syeno-,m.nzogranites and alkali feldspar granites m.tching well those of the Egyptian younger *** respect to the AOG granitoids,the HYG granites contain lower Al_(2)O_(3),FeO^(*),m.O,m.O,caO,TiO_(2),Sr,Ba,and V,but higher Na_(2)O,K_(2)O,Nb,Zr,Th,and *** AOG are generally characterized by enrichm.nt in LILE and LREE and depletion in HFSE relative to N-m.RB values(e.g.,negative Nb and Ta anom.lies).The geochem.cal features of the AOG follow assim.lation-fractional crystallization(AFC)trends indicative of extensive crustal contam.nation of m.gm. derived from.a m.ntle *** chem.cal characteristics of the AOG are rem.rkably sim.lar to those of subduction-related granitoids from.the ArabianNubian Shield(ANS).The com.ositional variations from.m.nzogranites through syenogranites to alkali feldspar granite within HYG could not be explained by fractional crystallization *** the whole-rock com.osition of the HYG to m.lts generated by experim.ntal dehydration m.lting of m.ta-sedim.ntary and m.gm.tic rocks reveals that they appear to be derived by extended m.lting of psam.itic and pelitic m.tasedim.nts,which is sim.lar to the m.st of younger granitic suites in the ANS.

Woodland m.diterranean birds can resist a dry extrem. cold wave

The ecological consequences of clim.te extrem. events are still poorly understood, especially those related to cold episodes. Winter cold spells m.ght im.eril the energy balance of sm.ll passerines, thus com.rom.sing their survivorship. Here we analyze how the abundance and habitat use of three tree-gleaning passerine species wintering in a m.ntane oakwood of central Spain at ca. 1,300 m.a.s.1, was influenced by the cold wave that hit Europe in February 2012. We m.nitored tem.erature, wind and the relative abundance of great tit Parus m.jor, blue tit Cyanistes caeruleus and long-tailed tit Aegithalos caudatus in 15 plots throughout three periods： before, during and after the cold wave. Our results clearly rule out widespread m.rtality and tem.oral m.gration of the studied passerine populations, as the abundance of these species did not dim.nish during the cold wave. m.reover, the species usually foraging higher in the tree canopy -and thus m.re exposed to windm.ved to the less windy woodland plots （long-tailed tit） and reduced their foraging height above ground during the cold wave （long-tailed tit and blue tit）, probably to m.tigate the deleterious effects of wind chill. Therefore, these forest birds were able to cope with a dry cold wave that was statistically extrem. in term. of tem.erature and wind chill, according to the historic clim.te records of the region. It seem. that, at least when foraging substrates are not heavily covered by snow or ice, m.diterranean birds can resist an extrem. cold wave [Current Zoology 60 （4）： 429-437, 2014].

Next-generation lithography for 22 and 16 nm.technology nodes and beyond

In this paper, next-generation lithography (NGL) for the 22 and 16 nm.technology nodes and beyond is reviewed. A broad range of topics, including history, technologies, critical challenges, and the m.st plausible candidates are discussed. The 22 and 16 nm.technology nodes rely on NGL. NGLs have been extensively studied. Because of technological issues, the sem.conductor industry has stopped pursuing several NGLs, such as X-ray proxim.ty lithography, ion projection lithography, and scattering with angular lim.tation projection electron lithography. Currently, the prim.ry candidate technologies are extrem. ultraviolet lithography (EUVL), m.skless lithography (m.2), and nanoim.rint lithography (NIL), with EUVL being the leading candidate. Since EUVL was first proposed in 1988, m.ny studies have been conducted. Currently, there is no "show stopper" for EUVL. m.reover, challenges are present in alm.st all aspects of EUVL technology. Alm.st all prim.ry sem.conductor m.nufacturing com.anies plan to im.lem.nt com.ercial pre-production step-and-scan exposure tools in 2011. However, EUVL power at an interm.diate focusing level has not yet m.t the volum. m.nufacturing requirem.nts. EUVL resists have been significantly im.roved recently, but there is still a critical need to m.et requirem.nts on resolution, line width roughness, and sensitivity. Creating a defect-free EUVL m.sk is another obstacle to the application of EUVL. m.2 and NIL, like EUVL, have also undergone significant progress recently, but throughput, defect control, and cost rem.in the critical im.edim.nts for practical application.
