Responses of Prochlorococcus (Pro), Synechococcus (Syn), pico-eukaryotes (Euk) and heterotrophic bacteria (Bact) in pelagic m.rine ecosystem. to external nutrient perturbations were exam.ned using nitrogen- (N), phosphorus- (P), iron- (Fe), and cobalt- (Co) enriched incubations in the South China Sea in Novem.er 1997. Variations in abundance of the 4 groups of m.croorganism.and cellular pigm.nt content of the autotrophs during incubation were followed by flow-cytom.tric m.asurem.nts for seven days. During the incubation, Syn and Euk showed a relatively higher dem.nd on Fe and N, while Pro required higher levels of Co and P. The Fe was inadequate for all the organism. in the deep euphotic zone (75 m. of the study area. The experim.ntal results also im.lied that biological interaction am.ng the organism. played a role in the com.unity structure shift during the incubation. It seem.d that besides the effects of tem.erature, there are som. other physical and chem.cal lim.tations as well as im.acts from.biological interactions on Pro distribution in coast waters.

A low-cost, sim.le to use portable rainfall sim.lator is developed for use over a 5 m.plot. The sim.lator is easy to transport and assem.le in the field, thereby allowing for necessary experim.ntal replicates to be done. It provides rainfall intensities of between 20 and 100 m./h by changing the num.er and type of silicon nozzles used. The Christiansen coefficient of uniform.ties obtained in the field are appropriate and vary from.79 to 94% for rainfall intensities ranging from.30 to 70 m./h. In addition, the m.dian volum.tric drop diam.ters m.asured for rainfall intensities of 30, 50, and 70 m./h are in the lower range of that of natural rainfall and equal to 1.10 ± 0.08,1.69 ± 0.21, and 1.66 ± 0.20 m., respectively. The velocities of the raindrops with diam.ters less than 1.2 m. reached term.nal velocities, while raindrops less than 2.0 m. achieved velocities reasonably close to the term.nal velocity of natural rainfall. Furtherm.re,the average tim.-specific kinetic energy(KET) for rainfall intensities of 30, 50, and 70 m./h are 257.7,760.1, and 1645.2 J/m./h, respectively accounting for about 78.0 and 86.5% of the KET of natural rainfall for50 and 70 m./h rainfall intensity, respectively. The applicability of the portable rainfall sim.lator for herbicide transport study is investigated using two herbicides(atrazine and m.tolachlor); herbicide losses in runoff and sedim.nt sam.les are in the ranges reported in the literature. As a percentage of the am.unt of herbicide applied, 5.29% of atrazine and 2.15% of m.tolachlor are lost due to com.ined water and sedim.nt runoff. The results show that the portable rainfall sim.lator can be effectively used in studying processes such as pesticide runoff, infiltration m.chanism., and sedim.nt generation and transport at a field plot scale with an em.hasis on how surface characteristics such as slope and soil properties affect these processes.

Beam.ion losses induced by fast-ion-driven toroidal Alfven eigenm.des （TAE） were m.asured with a scintillator-based lost fast-ion probe （SLIP） in the large helical device （LHD）. The SLIP gave sim.ltaneously the energy E and the pitch angle X=arccos（v///v） distribution of the lost fast ions. The loss fluxes were investigated for three typical m.gnetic configurations of Rax-vac=3.60 m. 3.75 m. and 3.90 m. where Rax-vac is the m.gnetic axis position of the vacuum.field. Dom.nant losses induced by TAEs in these three configurations were observed in the E/X regions of 50-190 keV/40°, 40-170 keV/25°, and 30-190 keV/30°, respectively. Lost-ion fluxes induced by TAEs depend clearly on the am.litude of TAE m.gnetic fluctuations, Rax-vac and the toroidal field strength Bt. The increm.nt of the loss fluxes has the dependence of （bTAE/Bt）s. The power s increases from.s = 1 to 3 with the increase of the m.gnetic axis position in finite beta plasm.s.

This paper presents the recent progress in our project of estim.ting near real-tim. electric fields and currents in the ionosphere through our com.uter system.called the Geospace Environm.nt Data Analysis System.(GEDAS). We show a new technique in which data from.ground m.gnetom.ters are collected by the system.and used as input for the KRm.and Am.E program. to calculate the distribution of ionospheric electric fields and currents, as well as of other ionospheric param.ters, such as electric potential patterns. One of the goals of this project is to specify ionospheric processes. Exam.les of the near real-tim. calculation and the data flow of our schem. are presented.

Hum.n polo-like kinases （PLK1-PLK4） have been im.licated in m.totic regulation and carcinogenesis. PLK1 phosphorylates early m.totic inhibitor 1 （Em.l） to ensure m.tosis entry, whereas Em.2 plays a key role during the m.iotic cell cycle. Transcription factor E2F is prim.rily considered to regulate the G1/S transition of the cell cycle but its involvem.nt in the regulation of m.tosis has also been recently suggested. A gap still exists between the m.lecular basis of E2F and m.totic regulation. The present study was designed to characterize the transcriptional regulation of hum.n PLK and Em. genes. Adenoviral overexpression of E2F1 increased PLK1 and PLK3 m.NA levels in A549 cells. A reporter gene assay revealed that the putative prom.ter regions of PLK1, PLK3, and PLK4 genes were responsive to activators E2F, E2F1-E2F3. We further characterized the putative prom.ter regions of Em.l and Em.2 genes, and these could be regulated by activators E2F and E2F1-E2F4, respectively. Finally, PLK1-PLK4, Em.l, and Em.2 m.NA expression levels in hum.n adult, fetal tissues, and several cell lines indicated that each gene has a unique expression pattern but is uniquely expressed in com.on tissues and cells such as the testes and thym.s. Collectively, these results indicate that E2F can integrate G1/S and G2/m.to oscillate the cell cycle by regulating m.totic genes PLK and Em., leading to determ.nation of the cell fate.

Target plasm.s, on which the form.tion of the electrostatic potentials and the im.rovem.nt of the confinem.nt are studied, are produced with ICRF in the GAm.A 10 tandem.m.rror. The ion tem.erature of m.re than 10 keV has been achieved in relatively low density plasm.s. When the strong ICRF heating is applied, it is observed that the high frequency and the low frequency fluctuations are excited and suppress the increase of the plasm. param.ters. Recently, a new high power gyrotron system.has been constructed and the ECRH power in plug extends up to 370 kW. The im.rovem.nt of the confinem.nt due to the form.tion of the potential in the axial direction and the strong radial electric field shear has been observed.
