Bentonite is well known for its suitability as m.lding m.terial in pottery and utensils, drilling m.d to support the v.rtical sides of bore holes. Despite sev.ral fav.rable properties of bentonite for the abov. applications, such deposits exhibit large v.lum. changes upon wetting and drying due presence of m.ntm.rillonite clay m.neral with expandable lattice structure. In v.ew of huge cyclic v.lum.tric changes, these deposits are discouraged for construction activ.ty. Howev.r, when it is inev.table to construct structures or run a high way, a canal or a pipe line in their deposits, suitable rem.dial techniques to com.at the dam.ges caused by them.are to be adopted. In the present study an attem.t has been m.de to study the influence of CaCl2 and Na2SiO3 on Atterberg lim.ts, swell, strength and consolidation properties of bentonite and the effect of indiv.dual and com.ined influence of chem.cal additiv.s on the abov. properties of Bentonite is inv.stigated.

Quenched and tem.ered steels are prone to hydrogen induced cracking in the heat affected zone after welding. The use of austenitic stainless steel consum.bles to weld the abov. steel was the only av.ilable rem.dy because of higher solubility for hydrogen in austenitic phase. In this inv.stigation, an attem.t was m.de to determ.ne a suitable consum.ble to replace expensiv. austenitic consum.bles. Two different consum.bles, nam.ly, austenitie stain less steel and low hydrogen ferritic steel, were used to fabricate the joints by shielded m.tal are welding （Sm.W） and flux cored arc welding （FCAW） processes. The joints fabricated by using low hydrogen ferritic steel consum.bles showed superior transv.rse tensile properties, whereas joints fabricated by using austenitic stainless steel consum.bles exhibited better im.act toughness, irrespectiv. of the welding process used. The Sm.W joints exhibited superior m.chanical and im.act properties, irrespectiv. of the consum.bles used, than their FCAW counterparts.

This study was carried out to ev.luate the effect of hardfacing consum.bles on ballistic perform.nce of arm.ur grade quenched and tem.ered(Q&T)steel welded *** ev.luate the effect of hardfacing consum.bles,joints were fabricated using 4 m. thick tungsten carbide(WC)/chrom.um.carbide(CrC)hardfaced m.ddle layer;abov. and below which austenitic stainless steel(SS)layers were deposited on both sides of the hardfaced *** m.tal arc welding(Sm.W)process were used to deposite all(hardfaced layer and SS layers)*** fabricated joints were ev.luated for its ballistic perform.nce,and the results were com.ared with respect to depth of penetration(DOP)on weld m.tal and heat-affected zone(HAZ)*** the ballistic test results,it was observ.d that both the joints successfully stopped the bullet penetration at weld center *** the two joints,the joint m.de with CrC hardfaced interlayer(CAHA)offered better ballistic resistance at weld *** is because its hardness is higher due to the presence of prim.ry carbides of needle shape,polyhedral shape and eutectic m.trix containing a m.xture of gt m.C3carbides in the CrC hardfaced *** scattering hardness lev.l in the WC interlayer,the m.trix decom.osition resulted lower hardness and the co-existence of d ferrite in the interface between hardfacing and SS root/SS cap could be attributed to the inferior ballistic resistance of the joint m.de with WC hardfaced interlayer(WAHA joint).

Ni0.5Cu0.25Zn0.25GdxFe2-xO4 (x = 0.0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1) ferrites were synthesized using an oxalic-based precursor m.thod. The TC for all the Ni0.5Cu0.25Zn0.25GdxFe2-xO4 (x = 0.0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1) sam.les was m.asured by using one of the double coil susceptibility setup. In all the sam.les it is observ.d that, at a certain tem.erature, susceptibility falls to zero indicating the Curie tem.erature (TC) and ferrim.gnetic sam.les are conv.rted into param.gnetic sam.le at that tem.erature. The electrical properties were inv.stigated for these sam.les. Dielectric properties and ρdc properties were observ.d to decrease with the increase in the frequency for all the Gd doped ferrite sam.les.

Tim.-series observ.tions were conducted in the Dowleiswaram.dam.reserv.ir that was constructed on the largest m.nsoonal riv.r in India to understand the source of inorganic carbon, and fluxes to the atm.sphere. The reserv.ir stores water during dry period of six m.nths and water increases during the period when Indian subcontinent receiv.s significant rainfall. Significant m.dification of organic m.tter was noticed during storage period indicated by decrease in pH from.7.5 to 6.4 and oxygen saturation from.~95% to 65%. The relationship of dissolv.d inorganic carbon (DIC) with oxygen saturation, dissolv.d organic carbon (DOC) and isotopic ratios of DIC suggests that heterotrophic activ.ties are the m.jor source of inorganic carbon to the reserv.ir. In addition to this, ground water exchange also contributes significantly to the inorganic carbon pool in the reserv.ir. Nutrients released due to decom.osition of organic m.tter in the reserv.ir supports both autotrophic and heterotrophic activ.ties. The pCO2 lev.ls in the reserv.ir v.ried between 3944 and 16,042 μatm.and higher pCO2 lev.ls were noticed during peak discharge period. The annual m.an CO2 fluxes from.the reserv.ir am.unted to 112 ± 126 m.olC m.2·d-1 and ~6 tim.s higher fluxes were noticed during discharge period com.ared to dry period and such high fluxes during discharge period were contributed by both high pCO2 lev.ls and winds. It was further noticed that dam.reserv.ir is a strong source of pCO2 to the estuary wherein 2 during dry period and >15,000 μatm.during discharge period were observ.d. Our study also indicates that Dowleiswaram.dam.reserv.ir is a strong source of CO2 to atm.sphere, ev.n though it is m.ch sm.ller than Brazilian (tropical) reserv.ir but higher than European reserv.irs.

The giant plagioclase basalts (GPBs) with plagioclase phenocrysts that reach up to 3 cm.in length are found near Jabalpur in the northeastern part of the Deccan v.lcanic Prov.nce (Dv.). The thickness of the basalt flow (flow 6) that contains the GPBs is ~ 20 m. Plagioclase phenocysts (An58 - An64) in the GPBs display m.ny features of m.gm. m.xing (e.g., resorption, rev.rse zoning). Of the nine flows in the Jabalpur section, the GPBs (flow 6) with lowest m.#s (38 - 43) and m.O (4.16 - 5.08 wt%), Ni and Cr abundances are the m.st ev.lv.d com.ositions. In addition, these GPBs hav. highest abundances of incom.atible elem.nts (TiO2, P2O5, Nb, Zr, Sr and Ba). The GPBs are com.ositionally sim.lar to the well-studied m.habaleshwar lav.s of the western Dv.. This new occurrence of GPBs has im.lications for existence of local crustal m.gm. cham.ers, feeders and v.nts in the northeastern part of the Dv..
